TRAVEL TO & FROM MICHIGAN AND CAYUGA CO., NY WAS PROBABLY BY BOAT & RAIL or COACH |
^ As it has been pointed
out recently, by James L. Van Wie, living in Cayuga Co. NY; that the possibility
of 3-4 day travel to Muir, Ionia Co., MI by Timothy, Benjamin and Jonathan
Hoyt, and the Van Wie families that Benjamin & Jonathan married into. That
passenger boat travel from Fair Haven Port on Lake Ontario, NY to Detroit
or Port Huron, MI, and then the rest of travel by Coach or Rail to Muir,
MI in the 1840's to 1880's was not a hardship, especially to go back and
forth to be with family and have their children born in NY with family and
mother at their bedside, all the while, living in Michigan. Originally The Welland Canal was constructed in 1829 to link Lake Erie with Lake Ontario and offer ships a safe detour around Niagara Falls. A possible reason for the Hoyt Families leaving Meridain, was the result of "the Panic of 1857", when a prominent person named "William Smith Inghram moved to Missouri, leaving the town & townspeople in poverty and banckruptcy." "From that time on the village lost its glamour and glitter and had to start from scratch again. It was not until the Civil War inflatioary influence that the village began to recover her equilibrium." (Taken from 4th & 5th Paragraph, pg. 15, Bicentennial History of Meridian, 1976.) The other possible reason for moving was that Timothy Hoyt, 92, passed away on June 21, 1862 in Sennett, but MI records show Muir-Lyons, Ionia Co., MI, then retruned and buried in Sennett, Soule Cemetery.(jeh) The patriarch has passed and, "From 1853 to his death, his birth-day was celebrated by an annual gathering of his descendants, numberibng 50 or 60."
