Email #1 - Question of Fist Marriage of John Colegrove to Martha __?_ a she a Corwin? And 2nd marriage of John Colegrove & Hannah Corwin & where it was confirmed. From: "David A. Macdonald" To: Cc: "Terry Colegrove" Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 2:39 PM Subject: John Colegrove and Hannah Corwin You may have the answer to a problem of mine that has been awaiting quite a while for solution, and it is possible that I can offer you some useful information as well. In the Colgrove material that you have posted at http:// www.johnhoyt.com/h-linage/g077.html#I1542 you show a Stephen Colegrove, Esq., 1695-14 January 1787, who died in Sterlling, Windham County, Connecticut. You show his second wife as Phebe Millard but you do not carry the Colegrove line down from there. A Terry Colegrove has posted that line at http://www.johnhoyt.com/ colegrove.html, showing his death on the same date but in "Heartford, Oneco., CT." I take it that he was referring to Oneco, Windham County, Connecticut, which is in effect the same place that you name. He goes on to say that there was by that marriage a son 15. John Colegrove, born 1744, who married Nancy Hannah Corwin on 5 March 1795. I have found that marriage, and although it is in the Rhode Island vital records, it is clear that the marriage actually took place in Franklin, Connecticut, where it was entered into church records. That was a second marriage for John Colegrove. I am interested in his first wife, who is said to have been a Martha Corwin, born in 1754, by whom John Colegrove had a number of children: (i) Hannah, b. 1783, (ii) Archibald, b. 1785, (iii) Phoebe, b. 1785, (iv) Amey, b. 1787, (v) John, b. 1793. Both of the Colegrove-Corwin marriages present a problem, because the Corwins did not go up to Rhode Island. They were in New London County, Connecticut, and both of John Colegrove's Corwin marriages must have taken place there. Given that you have researched the family, are you aware of any evidence that would account for John Colegrove, born in Rhode Island and dying in Rhode Island, marrying twice in New London County, Connecticut? And, while I am asking questions, have you in your research come across that first marriage of John Colegrove and records of the birth of those children? I have not. I'd be grateful for any help that you can give. David A. Macdonald d.a.macd at comcast dot net
