Notes:

David I (1084-1153), king of Scotland (1124-53), son of Malcolm III.When his oldest brother , King Edgar, died, he left the Scottishdomains north of the Forth of Clyde to another brothe r, who becameKing Alexander I, while David inherited southern Scotland with thetitle of ear l of Cumbria. Six years later, David married the daughterof the earl of Northumbria and there by became earl of Huntingdon and avassal of the English crown. In 1124 King Alexander died, a nd Davidbecame king of Scotland. From 1136 to 1138, he tried unsuccessfully tohelp his niec e Matilda secure the English throne. Thereafter Daviddevoted himself to ruling Scotland. He r eplaced the traditionalScottish tribal organization with a feudal one modeled after that ofNo rman England and was noted for the castles he built and themonasteries he founded. Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia © & 1996-97 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. David I of Scotland From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia King David I (or Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim; also known as Saint David Ior David I "the Saint") ( 1084 ? May 24, 1153), was King of Scotlandfrom 1124 until his death, and the youngest son o f Malcolm Canmore andof Saint Margaret (sister of Edgar Ætheling). He married Matilda, daughte r and heiress of Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria, in 1113 andthus gained possession of the earl dom of Huntingdon. On the death of King Edgar in 1107, the territories of the Scottishcrown were divided in acco rdance with the terms of his will betweenhis two brothers, Alexander and David. Alexander, to gether with thecrown, received Scotland north of the Rivers Forth and Clyde, Davidthe souther n district with the title of Earl of Cumberland. The deathof Alexander in 1124 gave David pos session of the whole starting on 27April of that year. In 1127, in the character of an English baron, he swore fealty toMatilda as heiress to her fa ther Henry I, and when the usurper Stephenousted her in 1135 David vindicated her cause in ar ms and invaded theKingdom of England. But Stephen marched north with a great army, whereupon D avid made peace. The peace, however, was not kept. Afterthreatening an invasion in 1137, Davi d marched into England in 1138,but sustained a crushing defeat on Cutton Moor in the engageme nt knownas the Battle of the Standard. He returned to Carlisle, and soon afterwards concluded peace. In 1141he joined Matilda in Lon don and accompanied her to Winchester, butafter a narrow escape from capture he returned to S cotland. Henceforthhe remained in his own kingdom and devoted himself to its politicaland ecc lesiastical reorganization. A devoted son of the church, hefounded five bishoprics and many m onasteries. In secular politics heenergetically forwarded the process of feudalization and an glicisationwhich his immediate predecessors had initiated. He died at Carlisle.David I is rec ognised by the Roman Catholic Church as a Saint, although he was never formally canonized. He had two sons, Malcolm (not to be confused with Malcolm IV ofScotland, this Malcolm's nephe w) and Henry and two daughters, Clariciaand Hodierna. Richard Oram's biography In 2004, British historian Richard Oram released the first modernbiography of David I, calle d David I: The King Who Made Scotland, inwhich he argues that David I modernized the Kingdo m of Scotland, formulated a national legal code, introduced native currency, foundedthe main c ities, reformed the church and established monasteries. DrOram says "David was the king who effectively created the kingdom of Scotland aswe would now recognis e it. The man was a complete swine but then youdidn't succeed by being nice in those days. Wa llace and Bruce are seenas the 'liberators', the patriotic heroes who rescued Scotland fromth e tyranny of foreign oppression or so the conventional propagandawould have it. Both were th e subject of epic poems which, whatevertheir historical merit, fixed them eternally in the po pular mind asthe towering personalities of medieval Scotland. David, despite hissuccesses i n projecting Scottish royal power further than any of hispredecessors and extending it more e ffectively than any of hissuccessors before the fifteenth century, did not have a similarprop agandist. In post-Reformation Scotland, he was simply too Catholicfor the taste of some histo rians." Richard Oram's thesis is somewhat controversial. Earlier and latermonarchs of Scots can be cl aimed to have established national legalcodes, cities and established monasteries. David's at tention was oftenfocused southwards, and had Carlisle as one of his main royal seats.

She lists her find ings regarding her Hungerford line. The pertinent portion of this letter that deals with Elis ha and Keziah says--"Elisha Hungerford married Keziah Conger, born 1752, daughter of Job Cong er." Later in the letter she says: "I have traced the Conger line back to the original John , who came to Woodbridge, NJ in 1667. The DAR refuses to recognize Keziah as a Revolutionar y ancestor because I have no letter or diary to prove her service. Her grandfather was a sold ier in the militia in 1715 (NJ). Her father, Job, moved to Albany County. He was 48 when th e Revolution broke out and had at least eight children, the two oldest being girls. Three son s (aged 20, 17,and 15) enlisted in Capt. Van Wie's Company (5th Van Rensselaerwyck) of the 3r d Albany County Regiment commanded by Col. Philip Schuyler. At the close of the war each ha d seven years of service. Reuben was discharged as a sergeant, Uzzia has a corporal, and Jame s as a private. Each received a grant of land and all 3 removed to Cayuga County. She also had a P .S. at the end of her letter. It says: "Miss Amy F. Conger of 55 Union Avenue, N.E., GrandRapi ds 3, Mich. has the Conger genealogy mentioned. She has been helpful. Her ancestor, Uzziah Co nger, was married in 1779 to Mary Hungerford. I think it probable Mary was Elisha's sister bu t have no proof and so she has not claimed descent from Thomas Hungerford, tho she is a membe r of the DAR. Is she entitled to do so? I would write descendants of Keziah Conger Hungerfor d to see if any of them had an old letter or diary proving participation in the war, but I ha ven't names or addresses. Notes:

Alexander I of Scotland From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Alexander I of Scotland or Alaxandair mac Maíl Coluim (modern:Alasdair mac Mhaol Chaluim) (c . 1078 ? 23 April 1124), called "TheFierce", king of Scots, was the fourth son of Máel Colui m macDonnchada by his wife Margaret, grand-niece of Edward the Confessor. He was named in hono ur of Pope Alexander II. Alexander was his unmarried brother Edgar's heir, perhaps throughouthis reign, and certainl y by 1104 when he was the senior layman presentat the examination of the remains of Saint Cut hbert at Durham prior totheir reinterrment. He held lands in Scotland north of the Forth andi n Lothian. On the death of Edgar in 1107 he succeeded to the Scottish crown; but,in accordance with Edga r's instructions, their brother David wasgranted an appanage in southern Scotland. Edgar's wi ll granted Davidthe lands of the former kingdom of Strathclyde or Cumbria, and thiswas appare ntly agreed in advance by Edgar, Alexander, David and theirbrother-in-law Henry I of England . However, in 1113, perhaps atHenry's instigation, and with the support of his Anglo-Norman , Daviddemanded, and received, additional lands in Lothian along the UpperTweed and Teviot. D avid did not receive the title of king, but of"prince of the Cumbrians", and his lands remain ed under Alexander'sfinal authority. The dispute over Upper Tweeddale and Teviotdale does not appear tohave damaged relations betw een Alexander and David, although it wasunpopular in some quarters. A Gaelic poem laments: It's bad what Máel Coluim's son has done, dividing us from Alexander; he causes, like each king's son before, the plunder of stable Alba. The dispute over the eastern marches does not appear to have causedlasting trouble between Al exander and Henry of England. In 1114 hejoined Henry on campaign in Wales against Gruffydd a p Cynan ofGwynedd. Alexander's marriage with Henry's illegitimate daughterSybilla de Normand y may have occurred as early as 1107, or as at lateas 1114. William of Malmesbury's account attacks Sybilla, but the evidenceargues that Alexander and Sy billa were a devoted but childless coupleand Sybilla was of noteworthy piety. Sybilla died i n unrecordedcircumstances at Eilean nam Ban (Kenmore on Loch Tay) in July, 1122and was burie d at Dunfermline Abbey. Alexander did not remarry andWalter Bower wrote that he planned an Au gustinian Priory at the Eileannam Ban dedicated to Sybilla's memory, and he may have taken st eps tohave her venerated. Alexander had at least one illegitimate child, Máel Coluim macAlasdair, who was later to be i nvolved in a revolt against David I inthe 1130s. He was imprisoned at Roxburgh for many year s afterwards, perhaps until his death some time after 1157. Alexander was, like his brothers Edgar and David, a notably piousking. He was responsible fo r foundations at Scone and Inchcolm. Hismother's chaplain and hagiographer Thurgot was name d Bishop of SaintAndrews (or Cell Rígmonaid) in 1107, presumably by Alexander's order. The cas e of Turgot's would-be successor Eadmer shows that Alexander'swishes were not always accepte d by the religious community, perhapsbecause Eadmer had the backing of the Archbishop of Cant erbury, Ralphd'Escures, rather than Thurstan of York. Alexander also patronisedSaint Andrews , granting lands intended for an Augustinian Priory, which may have been the same as that inte nded to honour his wife. For all his religiosity, Alexander was not remembered as a man ofpeace. John of Fordun says o f him: Now the king was a lettered and godly man; very humble and amiabletowards the clerics and reg ulars, but terrible beyond measure to therest of his subjects; a man of large heart, exertin g himself in allthings beyond his strength. He manifested the terrible aspect of his character in his reprisals inthe Mormaerdom of Moray . Andrew of Wyntoun's Orygynale Cronykil ofScotland says that Alexander was holding court a t Invergowrie (byDundee) when he was attacked by "men of the Isles". Walter Bower saysthe at tackers were from Moray and Mearns. Alexander pursued themnorth, to "Stockford" in Ross (nea r Beauly) where he defeated them. This, says Wyntoun, is why he was named the "Fierce". The da ting ofthis is uncertain, as are his enemies' identity. However, in 1116 theAnnals of Ulste r report: "Ladhmann son of Domnall, grandson of theking of Scotland, was killed by the men o f Moray." The king referredto is Alexander's father and Domnall was Alexander's half brother . TheMormaerdom or Kingdom of Moray was ruled by the family of Mac Bethadmac Findláich and Lu lach mac Gille Coemgáin; not overmighty subjects, but a family who had ruled Alba within littl e more than a lifetime.Who the Mormaer or King was at this time is not known, it may havebee n Óengus of Moray or his father, whose name is not known. As forthe Mearns, the only known Mo rmaer of Mearns, Máel Petair, hadmurdered Alexander's half-brother Donnchad mac Maíl Coluim i n 1094. Alexander died in April 1124 at his court at Stirling; his brotherDavid, probably the acknowl edged heir since the death of Sybilla, succeeded him.

Notes:

Edith of Scotland From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Edith of Scotland, (c.1080-May 1, 1118) was the first wife of Henry Iof England. She was th e daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland and St.Margaret of Scotland. Robert Curthose had stoo d as godfather at herchristening. The English queen Matilda of Flanders was also present atth e font and may have been her godmother. When she was about six-years-old Edith and her sister, Mary, were sentto Romsey, where thei r aunt Cristina was abbess. During her stay atRomsey and Wilton, Edith was much sought-afte r as a bride; she turneddown proposals from both William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, andA lan Rufus, Lord of Richmond. Hermann of Tournai even claims thatWilliam Rufus considered marr ying her. She was out of the monastery by1093, when Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote t o the Bishop ofSalisbury ordering that the daughter of the king of Scotland bereturned to th e monastery that she had left. After the death of King William Rufus in August 1100, his brotherHenry quickly seized the roy al treasury and the royal crown. His nexttask was to marry, and Henry's choice fell on Edith . Because Edith hadspent most of her life in a nunnery, there was some controversy overwhethe r or not she had been veiled as a nun and would thus beineligible for marriage. Henry sough t permission for the marriage fromArchbishop Anselm of Canterbury, who returned to England i n September1100 after a long exile. Professing himself unwilling to decide soweighty a matte r on his own, Anselm called a council of bishops inorder to determine the legality of the pro posed marriage. Edithtestified to the archbishop and the assembled bishops of the realmthat s he had never taken holy vows. She insisted that her parents hadsent her and her sister to Eng land for educational purposes, and thather aunt Cristina had veiled her only to protect her " from the lust ofthe Normans". Edith claimed she had pulled the veil off and stamped onit, an d her aunt beat and scolded her most horribly for this. Thecouncil concluded that Edith had n ever been a nun, nor had her parentsintended that she become one, and gave his permission fo r themarriage. Edith and Henry seem to have known one another for some time beforetheir marriage -- Willia m of Malmesbury states that Henry had "longbeen attached" to her, and Orderic Vitalis says th at Henry had "longadored" Edith's character. Through her mother she was descended fromEdmun d II of England and thus Alfred the Great and the old line of thekings of Wessex; this was ve ry important as Henry wanted to help makehimself more popular with the English people and Edi th represented theold English dynasty. In their children the Norman and Anglo-Saxondynastie s would be united. Another benefit of the marriage was thatEngland and Scotland became politi cally closer; three of her brothersserved as kings of Scotland and were unusually loyal to En gland duringthis period. Edith and Henry were married on November 11, 1100 at Westminster Abbeyby Archbishop Anselm o f Canterbury. She was crowned as "Matilda", afashionable Norman name. She and Henry had two c hildren: Matilda, born February 1102 William Adelin, born 1103 She maintained her court primarily at Westminster, but accompanied herhusband in his travel s all across England, and in 1106/1107, Edithprobably visited Normandy with Henry. Her cour t was filled withmusicians and poets; she commissioned a monk, probablyTurgot, to writea biog raphy of her mother, Saint Margaret. She was an active queen, and like her mother was renowne d for her devotion to religion and thepoor. William of Malmesbury describes her as attendin g church barefootat Lent, and washing the feet and kissing the hands of the sick. Shealso adm inistered extensive dower properties and was known as a patronof the arts, especially music . After her death in 1118 she wasremembered by her subjects as "Matilda the Good Queen" and " Matilda ofBlessed Memory", and for a time sainthood was sought for her, thoughshe was never c anonized. Henry married again four years after herdeath.

Notes:

Waleran de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Worcester From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Waleran de Beaumont, Count of Meulan, 1st Earl of Worcester (1104 ? 9April 1166, Preaux), wa s the son of Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl ofLeicester and Elizabeth de Vermandois, and the tw in brother of Robertde Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester. He is not referred to by anysurname i n a contemporary document other than 'Waleran son of CountRobert'. Early life Waleran was born in 1104, the eldest of twin sons of Robert deBeaumont, count of Meulan, wh o was also to become earl of Leicester in1107. On their father's death in June 1118, the boy s came into thewardship of King Henry I of England. They remained in his care tilllate in 112 0 when they were declared adult and allowed to succeed totheir father's lands by a division a lready arranged between the kingand their father before his death. By the arrangement, Walera nsucceeded to the county of Meulan upriver on the Seine from the Normanborder, and the princi pal family Norman honors of Beaumont and PontAudemer. His great possessions included the fore st of Brotonne, whichwas centred on his castle of Vatteville on the left bank of the Seine.A s part of the family arrangement, Waleran also received a largeestate in Dorset centred on th e manor of Sturminster Marshall. Rebellion and Imprisonment Late in 1122 Waleran was drawn into a conspiracy with Amaury deMontfort, count of Evreux, i n support of the claimant to Normandy,William Clito, son of Robert Curthose. The king howeve r detected theconspiracy, and Waleran and his young colleagues were caught unawaresby a preem ptive strike by the king's army against the rebel centre ofMontfort-sur-Risle. Waleran rallie d and based his resistance to theking at his castle of Brionne. In October 1123 he lost his f ortress ofPont Audemer on the Norman coast to a siege, despite calling inmilitary help from h is French relations and allies. After a winter ofraiding, on 25 March 1125, Waleran proceede d to the relief of hiscastle of Vatteville, with his three brothers-in-law, Hugh deChâteauneu f, Hugh de Montfort and William, Lord of Bréval. Thereturning column was intercepted by a for ce of knights and soldiers ofHenry I's household between Bourgtheroulde and Boissy-le-Châtel , theroyal commander being given variously as William de Tancarville or OdoBorleng. The roya l household troops decisively defeated Waleran whenhe attempted a mounted charge at the hea d of his men, shooting theirhorses from under them. Waleran's remaining castles continued tor esist until 16 April 1124 when Waleran was forced by the king toorder his seneschal Morin d u Pin to surrender them. Waleran's landswere seized and he was imprisoned first at Rouen, the n at Bridgnorthin Shropshire and finally at Wallingford Castle. Waleran was released for unknown reasons in 1129. He resumed an activerole at court and he an d his twin brother were both present at Henry'sdeathbed. He was probably involved in the disc ussions of the Normanmagnates in December 1135 as to who should succeed to Normandy andEnglan d. Lieutenant of Normandy The accession of Stephen may have taken him by surprise but he hadalready offered his allegia nce to the new king before Easter 1136. Atthe court he was betrothed to the king's infant dau ghter, Mathila, andreceived the city and county of Worcester as her marriage portion. After Ea ster he went to Normandy taking authority from the king to actas his lieutenant in the duchy . In September he commanded the army ofNorman magnates which repelled the invasion by Geoffre y of Anjou, husband of the Empress Matilda, daughter of Henry I. He was also ableto capture th e chief rebel Roger de Toeni. He remained there until thefollowing spring and then returned t o England. The next year he attended the king on his tour of Normandy, crossedback to England with him a t the end of the year, by which time he wasbeginning to undermine the previous ascendancy a t court of the bishopsof Winchester and Salisbury. He and his family began to monopolisefavou r and patronage at Stephen's court and they alienated the factionheaded by Earl Robert of Glo ucester, who in retaliation adopted thecause of his half-sister, the Empress. In June 1138, W aleran was inNormandy to confront successfully again an invading Angevin army.Waleran used hi s extensive connections at the French court to mobilisea large force of French knights to ass ist him. It was probably in 1138that he received the second title of Earl of Worcester. He fo unded theCistercian abbey of Bordesley at the end of that year to mark hisarrival in the coun ty. The same year his youngest brother Hughreceived the earldom of Bedford and other relation s were similarlyhonoured. Before Easter 1139 Waleran was in Paris on an embassy to his cousin, the new King Louis VII o f France. On his return he was the motivatingforce behind the overthrow of the court factio n headed by thejusticiar, Bishop Roger of Salisbury. The bishop and his family werearrested i n June, and their wealth and many of their possessionsconfiscated. Civil war With the arrival of Robert of Gloucester in England in September 1139,the civil war between S tephen and Mathilda's supporters got under way.One of the first attacks Gloucester sponsore d was an assault onWaleran's English base at Worcester. The city was attacked and sackedo n 7 November 1139. Waleran retaliated savagely against the rebelcentres of Sudeley and Tewkes bury. Waleran was present at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141. He was one ofthe royalist earls who fle d when they saw that the battle was lost.Waleran escaped, but the king was captured and impri soned at Bristol.Waleran fought on for several months, probably basing himself atWorcester, w here he had to deal with the defection of his sheriff,William de Beauchamp. It may have bee n at this time that he seized andfortified the Herefordshire Beacon for the bishop of Herefor dcomplained of his lordship of this castle in 1148. At last late in thesummer of 1141 Walera n gave up the struggle as news reached him thathis Norman lands were being taken over by th e invading Angevin army.He surrendered to the Empress Mathilda, and had to accept herappropri ation of the abbey of Bordesley as it had been founded on aroyal estate. However, once in Nor mandy, Waleran was accepted at thecourt of Geoffrey of Anjou, and his lands in England and No rmandy wereconfirmed to him. His first marriage, to the king's daughter Mathilda, had ended wi th the child's death in London in 1137. Around the end of1142, Waleran married Agnes, daughte r of Amaury de Montfort, count ofEvreux. As a result of the marriage he obtained estates in t he Pays deCaux and the lordship of Gournay-sur-Marne in the Ile de France.Waleran had alread y obtained his mother's marriage portion of thehonor of Elbeuf on the Seine on her death in o r around 1139. Despitethe political reverses on 1141, Waleran was considerably wealthier atth e end of the year than he had been at the beginning. Waleran served with Geoffrey of Anjou at the siege of Rouen in 1143/4.During it he captured a nd burnt the suburb of Emendreville and theChurch of St. Sever, where many of both sexes peri shed in the flames. He consolidated his position as leader of the Norman nobility by aformal t reaty with his cousin Robert du Neubourg, seneschal ofNormandy. However, Waleran seems to hav e turned his mind to the Frenchcourt at this time. In Easter 1146 he was at Vézelay for the p reachingof the Second Crusade and attended the great assembly of magnates atParis from Apri l to June 1147 to meet the pope and Louis VII. On 29June he was joint leader of the Anglo-Nor man crusaders on theirrendezvous with Louis VII at Worms. He accompanied the crusade toSyri a and its unfortunate conclusion before Damascus. He seems to haveleft Palestine before Kin g Louis, taking the sea voyage home. He wasshipwrecked somewhere on his return, perhaps on th e coast of Provence. He promised to build an abbey of Cistercians if he survived the wreck,an d in due course he built the abbey of St Mary de Voto (of the Vow)or Le Valasse in fulfilmen t of his vow. Political Decline Waleran's great influence in Normandy survived till 1151, but the newregime of Duke Henry wa s not sympathetic to him. He made the fatalerror of temporising with the Capetian court and a ssisting thecampaigns of Louis VII, his overlord for Meulan. Though his supportgained Walera n the hugely profitable wardship of the great county ofVermandois during the minority of hi s young cousin Count Ralph II, italso led to his downfall. In the second half of 1153 he wa s ambushedby his nephew and enemy Robert de Montfort, who held him captive whilehis Norman an d English estates were stripped from Waleran by DukeHenry's friends and officers. The earldo m of Worcester was suppressedand his Worcestershire castles destroyed in 1155. Although Waleran was released, his power in Normandy was broken, andan attempt to reclaim Mon tfort-sur-Risle from his nephew was ahumiliating failure. Waleran was an outsider at the cour t of Henry II,and between 1160 and 1162 lost his Norman lands and castles when hesupported Lo uis VII against Henry II. His last years were eked out asa landowner and justice in the duchy . The last notice of hisactivities is a settlement of his affairs relating to his priory ofGo urnay-sur-Marne around the end of 1165. Twenty days before his deathhe entered the abbey of S t Peter of Préaux, the ancestral abbey of hisfamily south of Pont Audemer in Normandy, and di ed as a monk there on9 or 10 April 1166. He was buried in its chapter house alongsidesevera l other members of his dynasty. Aristocrat and humanist Waleran was an important twelfth-century character in ways other thanpolitical. He was a lite rate man educated in the liberal arts andphilosophy. The elegy to him by Stephen de Rouen, mo nk of Bec-Hellouinreveals that he composed Latin verse. In 1142 he tells us that hepersonall y researched the deeds in the archive of Meulan priory beforeconfirming its possessions. Lik e his twin brother, he also seems tohave been an assiduous writer of letters and a number o f them survive. He was also a literary patron, as Geoffrey of Monmouth dedicated theearliest e dition of his History of the Kings of Britain to him in1136. Waleran founded Cistercian abbeys at Bordesley, Worcestershire (1139),and Le Valasse, Normand y (c.1150), though in both cases the abbeyswere taken over by the king. He was a generous pat ron of the twoancestral Benedictine monasteries of Préaux (St Peter for men and StLeger for w omen). He was besides accepted as advocate of the abbey ofBec-Hellouin, and was patron of it s priory at Meulan, founding anotherat Beaumont-le-Roger. He founded a priory a Benedictine p riory atGournay-sur-Marne. He endowed a major hospital at Pont Audemer, whichstill survives. Family and children He married, firstly, Matilda, daughter of King Stephen of England andMatilda of Boulogne, Cou ntess de Boulogne, circa March 1136. She diedin 1137 aged only four. He married, secondly, Ag nes de Montfort, daughter of Amaury III de Montfort, Count of Evreux, and Agnes deGarlande, i n 1141/2. He had children with Agnes de Montfort (the boys as they appear inorder in his 1165 charter t o Gournay priory): Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulan. Isabel de Beaumont (d. 10 May 1220), married twice: ca 1161 Geoffroy, lord of Mayenne; ca 1170 Maurice II, lord of Craon. Waleran de Meulan Amaury de Meulan, lord of Gournay-sur-Marne. Roger de Meulan or Beaumont, viscount of Evreux. Raoul (Ralph) de Meulan. Etienne (Stephen) de Meulan. Mary de Meulan.
