Notes:

Frederick I (Holy Roman Empire), called Frederick Barbarossa(1123?-1190), Holy Roman empero r and king of Germany (1152-1190) andking of Italy (1155-1190). He was born in Waiblingen, th e nephew ofKing Conrad III of Germany. After the death of his uncle in 1152,Frederick Barbaro ssa was made German king and elected Holy Romanemperor. From the 1150s to the 1170s Frederick was occupied with asserting hispower in Italy. He fough t with popes Adrian IV and Alexander III, andalso with the Lombards. The Lombard League, cons isting of the citiesof Milan, Parma, Padua, Verona, Piacenza, Bologna, Cremona, Mantua,Bergam o, and Brescia, was formed in 1167 and acknowledged PopeAlexander as its leader. In 1176 Fred erick was defeated by the LombardLeague at Legnano. The defeat was significant in military hi storybecause it was the first major triumph of infantry over a mounted armyof feudal knights . After the defeat, Frederick acceded to the demandsof the Lombards for autonomy but retaine d imperial suzerainty over thetowns. Meanwhile, Frederick made Poland tributary to the Holy Roman Empire, raised Bohemia to the ran k of a kingdom, and made Austria into anindependent hereditary duchy. He also consolidated hi s power inGermany. Frederick initiated the Third Crusade in 1189, and the nextyear he set ou t for Asia Minor. After gaining two victories over theMuslims, he was drowned in the Calycadn us (now Göksu) River in Cilicia(now in Turkey). Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia © & 1996-97 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Frederick I (German: Friedrich I. von Hohenstaufen)(1122 ? June 10,1190), also known as Fried rich Barbarossa ("Frederick Redbeard") waselected king of Germany on March 4, 1152 and crowne d Holy RomanEmperor on June 18, 1155. He was also Duke of Swabia (1147-1152, asFrederick III ) and King of Italy (1154-1186). As son of Duke FrederickII of Swabia (German Schwaben) and J udith of Bavaria, from the rivalHouse of Guelph (or Welf), Frederick descended from Germany' s twoleading principal families, making him an acceptable choice for theEmpire's princely ele ctors as heir to royal crown. Life and reign In 1147 Frederick became duke of Swabia and shortly afterwards madehis first trip to the East , accompanying his uncle, the German kingConrad III, on the Second Crusade. The expedition pr oved to be adisaster, but Frederick distinguished himself and won the completeconfidence of t he king. When Conrad died in February 1152, onlyFrederick and the prince-bishop of Bamberg we re at his deathbed. Bothasserted afterwards that Conrad had, in full possession of his mental powers, handed the royal insignia to Frederick and indicated that he,rather than his own six- year-old son, the future Frederick IV, Duke ofSwabia, should succeed him as king. The kingdom 's princely electorswere persuaded by this account and by Barbarossa's energetic pursuitof th e crown and he was chosen as the next German king at Frankfurt onthe 4th of March and crowne d at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) several dayslater. The new king was anxious to restore the Empire to the position it hadoccupied under Charlemag ne and Otto I the Great, and saw clearly thatthe restoration of order in Germany was a necess ary preliminary to theenforcement of the imperial rights in Italy. Issuing a general orderfo r peace, he was prodigal in his concessions to the nobles. Abroad,Frederick intervened in th e Danish civil war between Svend III andValdemar I of Denmark, and negotiations were begun wi th the East Romanemperor, Manuel I Comnenus. It was probably about this time that theking obt ained a papal assent for the annulment of his childlessmarriage with Adela (Adelheid) of Vohb urg (through whom he had gainedownership of much of Alsace), on the somewhat far-fetched grou nds ofconsanguinity (his great-great-grandfather was a brother of Adela'sgreat-great-great-gr andmother), and made a vain effort to obtain abride from the court of Constantinople. On hi s accession Frederick hadcommunicated the news of his election to Pope Eugenius III, but hadn eglected to ask for the papal confirmation. Eager to make amends withthe Papacy, Frederick co ncluded a treaty with Rome in March 1153, bywhich he promised in return for his coronation t o defend the papacyand make no peace with king Roger II of Sicily, or other enemies ofthe Chu rch, without the consent of Eugenius. He undertook six expeditions into Italy, in the first of which he wascrowned Holy Roman Emper or in Rome by Pope Adrian IV, following thesuppression by Imperial forces of the republican c ity commune led byArnold of Brescia. He left Italy in the autumn of 1155 to prepare fora ne w and more formidable campaign. Disorder was again rampant inGermany, especially in Bavaria , but general peace was restored byFrederick's vigorous measures. The duchy of Bavaria was tr ansferredfrom Henry II Jasomirgott, margrave of Austria, who became duke ofAustria in compens ation, to Frederick's formidable younger cousinHenry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, of the House o f Guelph, whose fatherhad already held both duchies. On June 9, 1156 at Würzburg, Frederickma rried Beatrice of Burgundy, daughter and heiress of Renaud III,becoming King of Burgundy an d adding the sizeable realm of the Countyof Burgundy, then stretching from Besançon (Bisanz ) to theMediterranean, to his possessions. His uncle, Otto of Freising, wrote an account of Frederick's reignentitled Gesta Frideric i I imperatoris (Deeds of the EmperorFrederick). Otto died after finishing the first two book s leaving thelast two to Rahewin, his provost. Rahewin's description "[Frederick's]characte r is such that not even those envious of his power canbelittle its praise. His person is well -porportioned. He is shorterthan very tall men, but taller and more noble than men of mediumh eight. His hair is golden, curling a little above his forehead... Hiseyes are sharp and pierc ing, his beard reddish, his lips delicate ...His whole face is bright and cheerful. His teet h are even andsnow-white in color... Modesty rather than anger causes him to blushfrequently . His shoulders are rather broad, and he is strongly built."is a description of Theodoric I I of the Visigoths (453-66) and is fromthe text Epistles by Apollinaris Sidonius In June 1158, Frederick set out upon his second Italian expedition, accompanied by Henry the L ion and his fearsome Saxons, which resultedin the establishment of imperial officers in the c ities of northernItaly, the revolt and capture of Milan, and the beginning of the longstruggl e with Pope Alexander III, which resulted in theexcommunication of the emperor in 1160. In re sponse, Frederickdeclared his support for Antipope Victor IV. Returning to Germanytowards th e close of 1162, Frederick prevented the escalation ofconflicts between Henry the Lion of Sax ony and a number of hisneighbouring princes who were growing weary of Henry's power, influenc e and territorial gains. He also severely punished thecitizens of Mainz for their rebellion a gainst Archbishop Arnold. Thenext visit to Italy in 1163 saw his plans for the conquest of Si cilyruined by the formation of a powerful league against him, broughttogether mainly by the t axes collected by the imperial officers. Frederick then organized the magnificent celebration of thecanonization of Charlemagne at Aac hen, while restoring the peace inthe Rhineland. In October 1166, he went once more on journe y to Italyto secure the claim of his Antipope Pascal, and the coronation of hiswife Beatric e as Holy Roman Empress. This time, Henry the Lion refusedto join Frederick on his Italian tr ip, tending instead to his owndisputes with neighbors and his continuing expansion into Slavi cterritories in northeastern Germany. Frederick's campaign was stoppedby the sudden outbrea k of the plague which threatened to destroy theImperial army and drove the emperor as a fugit ive to Germany, where heremained for the ensuing six years. Conflicting claims to variousbish oprics were decided and imperial authority was asserted overBohemia, Poland, and Hungary. Fri endly relations were entered intowith the East Roman emperor Manuel, and attempts were made t o come toa better understanding with Henry II of England and Louis VII ofFrance. In 1174, Frederick made his fifth expedition to Italy and, inresponse, the pro-papal Lombar d League was formed to stand againsthim. With the refusal of Henry the Lion to bring help t o Italy, thecampaign was a complete failure. Frederick suffered a heavy defeat atthe battle o f Legnano near Milan, on May 29, 1176, where he waswounded and for some time believed to be d ead. He had no choice otherthan begin negotiations for peace with Alexander III and the Lomba rdLeague. In the Peace of Venice, 1177, Frederick and Alexander IIIreconciled. The Emperor ac knowledged the Pope's sovereignty over thePapal States, and in return Alexander acknowledge d the Emperor'soverlordship of the Imperial Church. The Lombard cities, however, continued t o fight until 1183, when, in the Peace of Constance,Frederick conceded their right to freel y elect town magistrates. Frederick did not forgive Henry the Lion for his refusal to come tohis aid in 1174. Taking ad vantage of the hostility of other Germanprinces to Henry, who had successfully establishe d a powerful andcontiguous state comprising Saxony, Bavaria and substantialterritories in th e north and east of Germany, Frederick had Henrytried in absentia by a court of bishops and p rinces in 1180, declaredthat Imperial law overruled traditional German law, and had Henrystri pped of his lands and declared an outlaw. He then invaded Saxonywith an Imperial army to brin g his cousin to his knees. Henry's alliesdeserted him, and he finally had to submit in Novemb er 1181. He spentthree years in exile at the court of his father-in-law Henry II ofEngland i n Normandy, before being allowed back into Germany, where hefinished his days as much-diminis hed Duke of Brunswick, peacefullysponsoring arts and architecture, and died on 6 August 1195. After making his peace with the Pope, Frederick embarked on the ThirdCrusade (1189), a gran d expedition in conjunction with the Frencharmy, led by king Philip Augustus together with th e English, underRichard Lionheart. He organized a grand army and set out on theoverland rout e to the Holy Land, through Hungary and Romania, andarrived at Constantinople in the autumn o f 1189. From there theypushed on through Anatolia (where they were victorious in two battles) into Armenia, and approached Syria. The approach of the immense Germanarmy greatly concerne d Saladin and the other Muslim leaders, who beganto rally troops of their own and prepare t o confront Barbarossa'sforces. However, on June 10, 1190, while crossing the Saleph River inC ilicia, south-eastern Anatolia, Frederick was thrown from his horseand the shock of the col d water caused him to have a heart attack.Weighed down by his armour, he drowned in water tha t was barelyhip-deep, according to the chronicler Ibn al-Athir. A more mythological view of Frederick's death is based on the claimthat he was an owner of th e legendary Spear of Destiny. According tomyth, whoever possesses the spear is unstoppable, b ut if the ownerloses the spear, he will soon lose his life also. Frederick died whilecrossin g a stream, and at that moment, some accounts say that thespear had fallen from his hands. Frederick's death plunged his army into chaos. Leaderless, panicked, and attacked on all side s by Turks, many Germans were killed ordeserted. Only 5,000 soldiers, a tiny fraction of th e original forces, actually arrived in Acre. Barbarossa's son, Frederick VI of Swabiacarried o n with the remnants of the army, with the aim of burying theEmperor in Jerusalem, but effort s to conserve his body in vinegarfailed. Hence, his flesh was interred in the Church of St. P eter inAntiochia, his bones in the cathedral of Tyre, and his heart and innerorgans in Tarsus . Frederick's untimely death left the Crusader army under the command ofthe rivals Philip of Fr ance and Richard of England, who had traveledto Palestine separately by sea, and ultimately l ed to its dissolution.Richard Lionheart continued to the East where he fought Saladin withmix ed results, but ended without accomplishing his main goal, thecapture of Jerusalem. Frederick is the subject of many legends, including that of a sleepinghero, derived from th e much older British Celtic legend of Bran theBlessed. He is said not to be dead, but aslee p with his knights in acave in Kyffhäuser mountain in Thuringia, Germany, and that whenraven s should cease to fly around the mountain he would awake andrestore Germany to its ancient gr eatness. According to the story hisred beard has grown through the table at which he sits. Hi s eyes arehalf closed in sleep, but now and then he raises his hand and sends aboy out to se e if the ravens have stopped flying. The German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 was codenamedOperation Barbarossa.
