Notes:

Henry II Henry II belonged to the Plantagenet Dynasty. Born in 1133, heascendedto the throne in 1154 a nd died in 1189. He was preceded asmonarch byStephen and was succeeded by Richard I. Henry was the eldest child of Matilda, daughter of Henry I, andGeoffreyPlantagenet, Count o f Anjou. He succeeded Stephen as king in1154. Fromhis father and mother, he inherited, Anjou , Touraine,Normandy, andMaine. From his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, thedivorced queen o fLouis VII, he secured Poitou, Perigord, Limousin, andGascony. Henry revoked Stephen's grants of crown lands, destroyed the"adulterine"castles built by th e barons, expelled all mercenaries, andabolished the"fiscal" earldoms. In 1170, the Inquest of Sheriffs was followed by the dismissal ofmostsheriffs. The barons ros e with the kings own sons, but therebellion wascrushed, and Henry issues assizes the furthe r checked thebaronial power.During his reign, the jury system wasdeveloped.Medieval Sourceboo k: Gerald of Wales: The Death of King Henry II, from the Life of Archbishop Geoffrey ofYork -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 5: How he was present inseparably with his sick and weakfather, and how he did not aba ndon him even at the very end Now, the city of Tours having been captured, after the conference, goingfrom Azai to his fathe r in tears along the way, he [Geoffrey]began toask and ask urgently that at tomorrowÙus confe rence, where hewould haveto place himself entirely under the mercy of the king of theFranks i nall things, he should be allowed not to be present. For hesaid that hecould endure in no wa y to see his lord and father makesuch a humiliatingpeace. And thus they left one another on t hatcondition with great sobsand a large flow of tears. Truly peace wasmade the next day; whe n inthat same place king lay in bed with a graveillness, clearly with angerand indignation a t so great a humiliationproving the cause of hissickness, the chancellor, because he could no tstand by the king when hewas carried on a bier from Azai for piety asmuch as for grief, nowh aving been established at Chinon he stuck byhim inseparably; and whomhe had loved in health a nd prosperity, he didnot abandon when afflictedwith ills and lying on his bed in sickness. The refore sitting one day, with his bosom supporting the head andshoulders of his father, and ace rtain soldier holding his feet in hislap, he drove away flies from hisfatherÙus face with a f an; at lastthe king, opening his eyes, which for along time he had kept closed inthe anguis h of his illness, and seeinghis son, with a deep breathbroke forth in these words: "Dearest son," he said, "because whatever of faith and gratitude asoncould offer to a father , you have always striven to offer to me; ifIrecover from this affliction with God helping , I will give you, bastardson of the best father, rewards, and I will set you up amongthe high estand powerful men of my rule. But if now by chance going tomy rest I willnot be able to rep ay you, God, who is the requiter andauthor of all goodthings, will repay you, because you hav e provenyourself such a true sonto your father in my every fortune." To whom at once that one responded: "Your health is enough forme, father, and your prosperity ; which if God, and good Fortune, wishestogrant and save, I will confess to want nothing fo r myself fortheincrease of desire." And with that, rising up, and withdrawing fromthatplace w ith a great wail and lamentation, there he could not enduretomake a longer delay in the fac e of so much grief. [Written inmargin:Also the king, with tears, asked often that he leave th at placewithweeping. Truly he said with piety, by which inwardly he was movedlookingat him cl osely, that he was not burdened lightly by oneillness.] Atlength truly on the decisive day, t hat is the seventh fromwhich he hadtaken to his sick-bed, now with the fever winning overhim , hearing hisfather coming to the end, full of sorrow and grief hecame to him. Theking, openi ng at GeoffreyÙus lament his eyes alreadylong closed, andrecognizing him, broke out in thes e words in a weakvoice: "It is mydesire, dearest son, that you obtain the cathedralhonor of t he church ofWinchester, or better, that of York." And takinga gold ring with apanther, whic h he always held very dear, and whichhe had proposed tosend to his son-in-law the king of Spa in, heextended it to him with hisblessing. Also he had previously given tothat one his othe r fine ring, adorned with a most precious and goodsapphire, which he had held for along time a s a great treasure. Butalthough the antiquity of a will isfavorable and the authority of awil l is irrefragible in law, just as inmany other cases, in this itwas in vain because free wil l does notreturn again. Having done that, because, "Pale death strikes the shacks of paupersandthe towers of kings wi th the same foot," [Horace, Odes 1.4.13] theking, finally succumbing to the sickness, breathe d forth his spirit. And just as a poor man stands out among such great wealth, just so attheend he was without ri ng, scepter, crown and nearly everything whichisfitting for royal funeral rites; and many oth er things, which couldbeintroduced as an example for all, the book "On the Instruction ofaPri nce", which this studious soul had proposed to write for a laterageand precaution alike, desc ribes diligently. And then the body of the king was carried to Fontevrault, thesonattending the funeral process ion along the way on foot, sometimesaheadand sometimes behind, when the body was placed in th e church, beholdCount Richard of Poitou, the oldest of the legitimate sons stilllivingand th e heir, at once came in. And when he entered the churchandapproached the body, the face of hi s father, having been denuded ofthenapkin with which it had been covered, was plainly visible . Which, whenit appeared to all, just as if colored and with its usualfierceness, thecount, no t without growling of flesh and horror beforethe body, droppingto his knees in prayer for a l ittle while, remainedfor scarcely an hourof Sunday prayer. But as soon as he had enteredthe c hurch, just as thosewho were present maintain, both of thekingÙus nostrils emitted drops ofbl ood; so much that those seatednearby and the attendants of the bodyhad to wipe clean its mout h andface and wash them several times. And of what this could be a sign or portent, the careful readermayobserve for himself, sinc e to express it would be harmful. Thus these things having been accomplished, the count then passedthroughthe cloister and chap ter house, with a crowd, as usual, following thespoils more than the man, the chancellor remai ned in thechurch nearlyalone with the nuns, inseparable from the body of hisfather. Truly ont he morrow each son reverently attended the funeralrites and burial oftheir father with devoti on, the chancellor, thefatherÙus seal having beenreturned to the count, which at once on hisd eath he had signedfaithfully under the seals of the barons who werethere, followed thecount f or a few days, so that he would seem to betaken up by him withfraternal devotion. When the co unt then hastenedto go to Normandy, thechancellor making after him after a small delayin th e regions of Toursand Anjou, afterwards came to him in Normandy, and discovered the face ofth e count greatly turned away from himthrough the malice of jealous men. ============================================================== [1] Gerald of Wales: The Death of King Henry II, from the Life ofArchbishop Geoffrey of Yor k ©1994, translated by ScottMcLetchie.Permission granted for non-commercial educational use. ------------------------------------------- Henry II (born 1133, ruled 1154-89). The grandson of Henry I was thefirst Plantagenet king o f England. His mother was Matilda, daughter ofHenry I. His father was Geoffrey of Anjou, who m Matilda married afterthedeath of her first husband, Emperor Henry V. Geoffrey was calledPla ntagenet for his habit of wearing in his cap a sprig of thebroomplant, which in Latin is call ed planta genista. Henry II was born in Le Mans, France, in March 1133. During hismother's conflict with Stephe n for the English throne he was broughtto England. Stephen eventually recognized his claim, a nd Henry becamekingof England in 1154 after Stephen's death. Henry II held England and Normandy by his mother's right. From hisfather he inherited, as Fre nch fiefs, the important counties of Anjou,Maine, and Touraine. By his marriage with Eleano r of Aquitaine, whosemarriage with the French king Louis VII had been annulled, he acquiredPo itou, Guyenne, and Gascony, so that he held most of the BritishIslesand about half of France. Henry II reestablished law and order after the anarchy ofStephen'sreign. He improved the mili tary service by permitting thebarons to pay "shield money," or scutage, in place of serving i n thearmy. With this he hired soldiers who would fight whenever andwherever he wished--an imp ortant means of maintaining control over thepowerful nobles of the land. His greatest work was the reform of the law courts. He broughttheCuria Regis (King's Court) i nto every part of England by sendinglearned judges on circuit through the land to administe r the "king'sjustice."Thus gradually one system of law took the place of the manylocal custom s that had been in use. He also established the grandjury. Now accusations could be brought b y a body of representatives ofthe community against evildoers who were so powerful that no si ngleindividual dared accuse them. The petit jury, also called petty or trial jury, substituted theweighing of evidence and test imony by sworn men for the oldsuperstitious trial by combat or by ordeal. (See also Jury Syst em.)Henry even attempted to bring churchmen who committed crimes under thejurisdiction of th e king's courts, but the scandal caused by themurder of ArchbishopThomas Becket in the cours e of this quarrel forcedhim to give up this reform (see Becket). Henry's last years were embittered by the rebellion of his sons, aidedby Philip Augustus of F rance and by their mother, the unscrupulousEleanor. The king--old, sick, and discouraged--ha d to consent to theterms demanded of him. When he saw the name of John, his favorite son, amon g those of his enemies, he exclaimed, "Now let all things go asthey will; I care no more fo r myself, nor for the world." Two days later he died, muttering, "Shame, shame on a conqueredking."He was succeeded by hi s son Richard (see Richard, Kings ofEngland). After Richard's death, in 1199, John came to th e throne (seeJohn of England). First king of the Plantagenet line 1154-1189. Acceded 19 Dec 1154,Crowned at Westminster Abbe y, 19 Dec 1154. Tough and athletic, Henry II was strongly built, with a leonine head, freckled face, and red h air. . Henry II, King of England, was born in 1133 and died July 6, 1189,aged 57. On the death o f his father he found himself Count of Anjouand heir to a great empire in France, strong an d consolidated, towhich his marriage with Eleanor, of Aquitiane, in May, 1152, furtheradded A quitiane. On the death of King Stephen, Henry was recognized asKing of England, Dec. 19, 1154 , at the age of 21. 1. William, theConqueror, married Matilda of Flanders. 2. Henry I, King o f England.2. Adela married Stephen of 3. Maud m. Geoffrey Plantagenet. Blois. 4.Henry II, Kin g of Eng., 1154-1189. 3. King Stephen, 1135-1154. KingHenry II inherited a greater extent o f territory than ever had beenheld by an English sovereign, which he still further increase d by theconquest of Ireland and Brittany, and by his marriage with the richlyportioned daught er and heiress of William V, Duke of Aquitiane andCount of Poictou. He was styled "Rex Anglia e, Dux Normandie andAquitiane." By his Princess, who died June 26, 1202, Henry had issue:Will iam, Henry Richard (called Coeur de Lion), Geoffrey, John,Matilda, Eleanor and Joan. He was s ucceeded by Richard I, who in turnwas succeded by his brother, Henry II (of England) (1133-1189), king of England (1154-1189), firstmonarch of the house o f Anjou, or Plantagenet. Born in Le Mans,France, Henry became Duke of Normandy in 1151. He cl aimed the Englishkingship through his mother, Matilda. She had been designated theheiress o f Henry I but had been deprived of the succession by hercousin, Stephen of Blois. In 1153 Hen ry defeated Stephen's armies andcompelled the king to choose him as his successor; on Stephen 's deathin 1154 Henry became king. In 1164 Henry became involved in a quarrel with Thomas à Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, ove r Henry's efforts to subject the churchto his courts. In 1170 Becket was murdered by four o f Henry's knights.Widespread indignation over the murder forced the king to recognizeBecket a s a martyr. Henry instituted important judicial reforms, establishing acentralized system of justice. H e began the process of replacing theold trial by ordeal with modern court procedures. He wa s succeeded byhis son Richard I, called Richard the Lion-Hearted. Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia © & 1996-97 Microsoft Corporation. July 6, 1189), ruled as Duke of Anjou and asKing of England (1154?1 189) and, at various times, controlled parts ofWales, Scotland, eastern Ireland, and wester n France. His sobriquetsinclude "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wore) ,"Fitz Empress," and sometimes "The Lion of Justice," which had alsoapplied to his grandfathe r Henry I. He ranks as the first of thePlantagenet or Angevin Kings. Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign sawefficient consolidation. Henr y II has acquired a reputation as one ofEngland's greatest medieval kings. Biography He was born on March 5, 1133 at Le Mans, to the Empress Maud and hersecond husband, Geoffre y the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up inAnjou, he visited England in 1149 to help his mothe r in her disputedclaim to the English throne. Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anjouon the continent; his m arriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152 addedher land holdings to his, including vast areas s uch as Touraine,Aquitaine, and Gascony. He thus effectively became more powerful thanthe kin g of France ? with an empire (the Angevin Empire) thatstretched from the Solway Firth almos t to the Mediterranean and fromthe Somme to the Pyrenees. As king, he would make Ireland a pa rt ofhis vast domain. He also maintained lively communication with theEmperor of Byzantium Ma nuel I Comnenus. In August 1152, Henry, previously occupied in fighting Eleanor'sex-husband Louis VII of Franc e and his allies, rushed back to her, andthey spent several months together. Around the end o f November 1152they parted: Henry went to spend some weeks with his mother and thensailed fo r England, arriving on 6 January 1153. Some historiansbelieve that the couple's first child , William, Count of Poitiers, wasborn in 1153. During Stephen's reign the barons had subverted the state of affairsto undermine the monarch' s grip on the realm; Henry II saw it as hisfirst task to reverse this shift in power. For exa mple, Henry hadcastles which the barons had built without authorisation duringStephen's reig n torn down, and scutage, a fee paid by vassals in lieuof military service, became by 115 9 a central feature of the king'smilitary system. Record-keeping improved dramatically in ord er tostreamline this taxation. Henry II established courts in various parts of England, and firstinstituted the royal practi ce of granting magistrates the power torender legal decisions on a wide range of civil matter s in the name ofthe Crown. His reign saw the production of the first written legaltextbook, p roviding the basis of today's "Common Law". By the Assize of Clarendon (1166), trial by jury became the norm.Since the Norman Conquest, j ury trials had been largely replaced bytrial by ordeal and "wager of battel" (which English l aw did notabolish until 1819). Provision of justice and landed security wasfuther toughened i n 1176 with the Assize of Northampton, a build onthe earlier agreements at Clarendon. This re form proved one of Henry'smajor contributions to the social history of England. As a conseque nceof the improvements in the legal system, the power of church courtswaned. The church, no t unnaturally, opposed this, and found its mostvehement spokesman in Thomas Becket, the Archb ishop of Canterbury, formerly a close friend of Henry's, and his Chancellor. Henry hadappointe d Becket to the archbishopric precisely because he wanted toavoid conflict. The conflict with Becket effectively began with a dispute over whetherthe secular courts coul d try clergy who had committed a secularoffence. Henry attempted to subdue Becket and his fel low churchmen bymaking them swear to obey the "customs of the realm", but controversyensued o ver what constituted these customs, and the church provedreluctant to submit. Following a hea ted exchange at Henry's court,Becket left England in 1164 for France to solicit in person the support of Pope Alexander III, who was in exile in France due todissention in the college o f Cardinals, and of King Louis VII ofFrance. Due to his own precarious position, Alexander re mained neutralin the debate, although Becket remained in exile loosely under theprotection o f Louis and Pope Alexander until 1170. After areconciliation between Henry and Thomas in Norm andy in 1170, Becketreturned to England. Becket again confronted Henry, this time over thecor onation of Prince Henry (see below). The much-quoted, althoughprobably apochryphal, words o f Henry II echo down the centuries: "Whowill rid me of this turbulent priest?" Although Henry 's violent rantsagainst Becket over the years were well documented, this time four ofhis knig hts took their king literally (as he may have intended forthem to do, although he later denie d it) and travelled immediately toEngland, where they assassinated Becket in Canterbury Cathe dral onDecember 29, 1170. As part of his penance for the death of Becket, Henry agreed to sendmoney to the Crusader sta tes in Palestine, which the KnightsHospitaller and the Knights Templar would guard until suc h time asHenry arrived to make use of it on pilgrimage or crusade. Henrydelayed his crusade f or many years, and in the end never went at all, despite a visit to him by Patriarch Heracliu s of Jerusalem in 1184 andbeing offered the crown of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1188 he lev iedthe Saladin tithe to pay for a new crusade; the chronicler GiraldusCambrensis suggested hi s death was a divine punishment for the tithe, imposed to raise money for an abortive crusad e to recapture Jerusalem, which had fallen to Saladin in 1187.) Henry's first son, William, Count of Poitiers, had died in infancy. In1170, Henry and Eleanor 's fifteen-year-old son, Henry, was crownedking, but he never actually ruled and does not fig ure in the list ofthe monarchs of England; he became known as Henry the Young King todistingu ish him from his nephew Henry III of England. Henry and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, had five sons and threedaughters: William, Henry, R ichard, Geoffrey, John, Matilda, Eleanor, and Joan. Henry's attempts to wrest control of her l ands from Eleanor(and from her heir Richard) led to confrontations between Henry on theone si de and his wife and legitimate sons on the other. Henry's notorious liaison with Rosamund Clifford, the "fair Rosamund"of legend, probably bega n in 1165, during one of his Welsh campaigns, and continued until her death in 1176. However , it was not until 1174,at around the time of his break with Eleanor, that Henry acknowledged Rosamund as his mistress. Almost simultaneously, he began negotiatingto divorce Eleanor and m arry Alys, daughter of King Louis VII ofFrance and already betrothed to Henry's son, Richard . Henry's affairwith Alys continued for some years, and, unlike Rosamund Clifford,Alys allege dly gave birth to one of Henry's illegitimate children. Henry also had a number of illegitimate children by various women, andEleanor had several o f those children reared in the royal nursery withher own children; some remained members of t he household in adulthood.Among them were William de Longespee, 3rd Earl of Salisbury, whosem other was Ida, Countess of Norfolk; Geoffrey, Archbishop of York, sonof a woman named Ykenai ; Morgan, Bishop of Durham; and Matilda, Abbessof Barking. Henry II's attempt to divide his titles amongst his sons but keep thepower associated with th em provoked them into trying to take controlof the lands assigned to them (see Revolt of 1173 -1174), whichamounted to treason, at least in Henry's eyes. Gerald of Wales reportsthat whe n King Henry gave the kiss of peace to his son Richard, hesaid softly, "May the Lord never pe rmit me to die until I have takendue vengeance upon you." When Henry's legitimate sons rebelled against him, they often had thehelp of King Louis VII o f France. Henry the Young King died in 1183. Ahorse trampled to death another son, Geoffrey , Duke of Brittany(1158?1186). Henry's third son, Richard the Lionheart (1157?1199),with th e assistance of Philip II Augustus of France, attacked anddefeated Henry on July 4, 1189; Hen ry died at the Chateau Chinon onJuly 6, 1189 and lies entombed in Fontevraud Abbey, near Chin on andSaumur in the Anjou Region of present-day France. Henry's illegitimateson Geoffrey, Arc hbishop of York, also stood by him the whole time andalone among his sons attended on Henry' s death-bed. Richard the Lionheart then became king of England. He was followed byKing John, the younges t son of Henry II, laying aside the claims ofGeoffrey's children Arthur of Brittany and Elean or. Appearance Peter of Blois left a description of Henry II in 1177: "...the lordking has been red-haired s o far, except that the coming of old age andgray hair has altered that color somewhat. His he ight is medium, sothat neither does he appear great among the small, nor yet does heseem smal l among the great... curved legs, a horseman's shins, broadchest, and a boxer's arms all anno unce him as a man strong, agile andbold... he never sits, unless riding a horse or eating.. . In a singleday, if necessary, he can run through four or five day-marches and, thus foilin g the plots of his enemies, frequently mocks their plotswith surprise sudden arrivals...Alway s are in his hands bow, sword, spear and arrow, unless he be in council or in books."
