He joined the University of Chicago asan Instructo r in 1949 and remained there for his entire career, attainingthe rank of full professor in 19 58 and becoming the George BeadleDistinguished Service Professor in 1977. He served as Chair man of theBiology Department from 1972-77 and throughout his career was a majorarchitect of t he biological sciences at the University. BIOGRAPHY: Swift's first major achievement in cell biology was hisPh.D. dissertation resea rch, under Arthur Pollister, which employedFeulgen staining of DNA combined with microspectro photometry to revealthat there was a constant amount of DNA in most somatic cells of a givenv ertebrate animal, and half as much in germ cells. Though such aconclusion had been tentative ly reached in earlier biochemical studies,Swift's measurements at the single cell level (toge ther with concurrent, similar measurements made by Hans Ris while a visiting fellow at theRock efeller University) elegantly confirmed the principle of DNAconstancy. Together with the dem onstration by Hershey and Chase thatbacteriophage insert their DNA but not appreciable protei n into infectedcells, these findings ended any lingering skepticism that the gene wasDNA. BIOGRAPHY: Swift's scientific career primarily embraced chromosomestructure and function , combining a passion for ideal biological materialwith the application of experimental and t echnical innovation. He was anardent cytochemist, skilled light micrcoscopist and a masterfu l electronmicroscopist, but also held an overarching genetic perspective. His (andhis studen ts') major contributions included pioneering studies ofchromosomal proteins in plant cells, e legant comparisons of active andinactive chromatin in both Tetrahymena and Drosophila, and th e firstdefinitive work on nuclear particles containing pre-mRNA. One paperamong his most cit ed, still today, revealed the passage of a messengerRNP particle to and through nuclear pore s in ultrastructural detail (B.J.Stevens, B.J. and H. Swift, RNA transport from nucleus to cy toplasm inChironomus. J. Cell Biol. 36:55-77, 1966.) Swift did not his restricthis attentio n to the nuclear genome however. He had a life-long interestin cytoplasmic inheritance and h is laboratory played a key role in theemergence of the doctrine that mitochondria and chlorop lasts containgenomes of their own (vide infra). BIOGRAPHY: Swift was magnetic in attracting many of Chicago'sbrightest graduate student s over the years (an already very selectpopulation.) He rarely allowed his name to go on st udents'publications, something that is practically unheard of today. Anothercharacteristic o f his scholarship was that various reviews and symposiumpapers he published contained highl y original ideas and insights, writtenwith elegance and not repeated elsewhere. Rarely the c ase today. BIOGRAPHY: Swift had a gentle demeanor that some (who did not know himwell enough) could m istake for constitutional aloofness. In fact, hefound most people delightful (though he suff ered fools not gladly) andwas a most engaging and versatile conversationalist (on many subjec ts,including ones far beyond science). He had a very low tolerance forboastful people or sci entific hyperbole. I once told him that he haddiscovered the cell cycle due to his finding ( before Howard and Pelc)that DNA synthesis is discontinuous during interphase. He grinned (h e anabsolutely beautiful smile) and said "OK if you want to say so- justdon't put those word s in my mouth". No false modesty, simply an aversionto pushing an envelope too far. Swift c ould also turn into a powerful(even terrifying) combatant when truth was at stake or an under dog wasbeing unfairly attacked. For example, he was an early champion of RuthSager's findin g that Chlamydomonas chloroplasts contain DNA and defendedthe claim against skeptics. This f inding also led Swift to collaboratewith Lawrence Bogorad leading to their joint discovery o f mitochondrialribosomes. BIOGRAPHY: Swift received the ASCB's E.B. Wilson Award in 1985 and wasa member of the U.S . National Academy of Sciences, the American Academyof Arts and Sciences, and the National Ac ademy of Sciences of India. Iknow how much he cherished the E.B. Wilson Medal, due to his lo ve for theASCB. Hewson Swift will be long remembered as one of the lastcytologists who spann ed the pre-modern and modern eras of our profession,a man of vast biological knowledge, an in spiring mentor and colleague, and an individual of uncommon decency.
