Robert Fitzhamon From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Robert Fitzhamon (died March 1107), or Robert FitzHamon, Sieur deCreully in the Calvados regi on of Normandy, was Lord of Gloucester andthe conqueror of Glamorgan. As a kinsman of the Con queror and one ofthe few Anglo-Norman barons to remain loyal to two successive kingsRufus an d Henry, he was a prominent figure in England and Normandy.However, not much is known about h is earlier life or his exactrelationship to William I. Parentage and Ancestry Robert fitzHamon (b ca 1045-1055, d. March 1107 Falaise, Normandy) issaid to be a son of Hamo n, Count of Corbeil, himself a grandson ofRichard I of Normandy and thus cousin to Robert I o f Normandy (theConqueror's father). However, fitzHamon is also described as thealleged grands on of Hamo Dentatus (?The Toothy', i.e., probablybuck-toothed).[1]. The second explanation mi ght make sense if hisfather were also named Hamon and thus confused with the grandfatherand n amesake Hamon, Count of Corbeil. Hamon was younger brother of William, Count of Corbeil (possibly alsoknown as William, Coun t of Arques), and as such he was a descendant ofRichard I "The Fearless" or "Sans-Peur", Duk e of Normany,great-grandfather of William II, Duke of Normandy, later styled "TheConqueror" . Robert and his father were thus kin to the Conqueroralthough this connection does not appea r to have profited Robertsignificantly until 1087 when his cousin William Rufus ascended thet hrone. Robert's mother is said to have been Halwisa (or Hawisa) aliasElisabeth d'Avoye, widow of Hug h Magnus, Prince of France and laterco-king of France (elder brother of Henry I of France) an d daughter ofone Henri l'Oiseteur. He was a cousin of William the Conqueror, although the details of hisdescent from the Norma n dukes is uncertain. His family held thelordships of Torigny, Creully, Mézy, and Evrecy in N ormandy. Career in England Few details of Robert's career prior to 1087 are available; if he wasHamon's grandson rathe r than his son, this is not so surprising. Robert probably did not fight at Hastings, and does not appear in theDomesday Book, althoug h some relatives may. He first comes toprominence as a supporter of William Rufus during th e Rebellion of1088. After the revolt failed he was rewarded with great estates inGloucestersh ire and elsewhere. Some of these had belonged to the lateQueen Matilda, and were supposed t o be inherited by Rufus's youngerbrother Henry (the future Henry I); nevertheless Fitzhamon r emained ongood terms with Henry. The chronology of Fitzhamon's conquest of Glamorgan is uncertain, butit probably took place i n the decades after he received Gloucester. When the Welsh prince Iestyn ap Gwrgan (Jestin), prince or Lord ofGlamorgan, called in the as sistance of Robert Fitzhamon, a Normanknight, Fitzhamon slew the prince of South Wales Rhys a p Tewdwr inbattle in 1090. Robert Fitzhamon, with his Norman knights then tookpossession of G lamorgan, and "the French came into Dyned andCeredigion, which they have still retained, an d fortified the castles,and seized upon all the land of the Britons." Rhys's daughter Nestbec ame the mistress of King Henry I of England and allegedly wasmother of Robert of Caen who mar ried Fitzhamon's daughter and heiressand thus had legitimacy both among the Welsh and the Nor man barons.[2](Robert of Caen's mother is however unknown to historians andgenealogists). Iestyn did not profit long by his involvement with the Normans. He wassoon defeated and his l ands taken in 1091. Robert Fitzhamon then built[Cardiff Castle] on the site of an old Roman f ort in 1091; hisdescendants would inherit the castle and lands. Founder of Tewkesbury Abbey (1092) He also founded Tewkesbury Abbey in 1092, having been granted it in1087 by the new king Rufus . The abbey's dimensions are almost the sameas Westminster Abbey. The first abbot was Giraldu s, Abbot of Cranborne(d. 1110) who died before the abbey was consecrated in October 1121.Th e abbey was apparently built under the infinfluence of his wifeSibylle (or Sibilla)[3], sai d to be a beautiful and religious womanlike her sisters. Fitzhamon and His Kings Legend has it that Robert had ominous dreams in the days before Rufus'fatal hunting expeditio n, which postponed but did not prevent theouting. He was one of the first to gather in tear s around Rufus'corpse, and he used his cloak to cover the late king's body on itsjourney to b e buried in Winchester. How much of these stories are theinvention of later days is unknown. In any case Fitzhamon proved as loyal to Henry I as he had been to hispredecessor, remainin g on Henry's side in the several open conflictswith Henry's brother Robert Curthose. He was o ne of the three baronswho negotiated the 1101 truce between Henry I and Robert Curthose. In 1105 he went to Normandy and was captured while fighting near hisancestral estates near Ba yeux. This was one of the reasons Henrycrossed the channel with a substantial force later tha t year.Fitzhamon was freed, and joined Henry's campaign, which proceeded tobesiege Falaise. T here Fitzhamon was severely injured in the head;although he lived two more years he was neve r the same mentally. Hewas buried in the Chapter House at Tewkesbury Abbey, which he hadfound ed and considerably enriched during his lifetime. Marriage and Children Fitzhamon married circa 1087-1090 Sibyl (or Sybille), apparently theyoungest daughter of Roge r of Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury byhis first wife Mabel of Bêlleme, by whom he is sai d to have had fourdaughters. His eldest daughter Mabel inherited his great estates andmarrie d circa 1119 Robert of Gloucester. Fitzhamon's Gloucestershireproperty thus became the nucleu s of the Earldom of Gloucester latergiven to his son-in-law. Fitzhamon is sometimes called Ea rl ofGloucester, but was never so created formally. Another daughter Isabella (or Hawisa) is said to have been married toa count from Brittany, b ut no further details exist. His widow and twoother daughters (unnamed) are reported to hav e entered a convent. Descendants Robert fitzHamon had several descendants via his eldest daughter Mabeland her husband Rober t of Caen, 1st Earl of Gloucester, who had sevensons and two daughters. Mabel is notable fo r negotiating the exchangeof her husband with Matilda of Boulogne, queen of Stephen, when Rob ertof Caen's imprisonment spelled disaster for his legitimate half-sisterthe Empress Matilda . Two of Mabel's sons entered the church and roseto high rank, while at least one son Phili p fitzRobert (d after 1147)became a capable commander. His eldest son William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester was anunworthy successor to his fa ther and both grandfathers. He had severaldaughters, of whom the youngest Hawisa (or Isabella ) married as his1st wife King John of England and conveyed to him (during theirshort-lived ma rriage) the earldom of Gloucester, which eventuallypassed to her nephew Gilbert de Clare, 5t h Earl of Hertford. His younger daughter Maud (d. 1189) married 1141 Ranulph de Gernon,2nd Earl of Chester (b ca . 1099 - 16 December 1153), and had issue,and outlived her only son Hugh de Kevelioc, 3rd Ear l of Chester (d.1181).

That Robert, a little known son of the Earl of Gloucester was evenmarried, is revealed in a c harter dated between June 1141 and 1161,probably before Oct 1147, in which Hawise, daughter o f Earl Baldwin deRedvers, made a gift to Quarr Abbey jointly with her husband, Robert,son o f the Earl of Gloucester. CP, 5: 686 states Robert was a naturalson of Earl Robert and that h e was named c1160 in a charter and isaddressed in a writ from King Henry II as Castellan of G loucester.[Ronny Bodine, SGM, 18 Feb 1999] Note: The marriage took place before the charter, which was June 1141- Oct 1147 (probably).
