Ethelred II, called The Unready (968?-1016), Anglo-Saxon king ofEngland (978-1016), son of Ki ng Edgar and half brother of Edward theMartyr. His reign was marked by bitter military strugg les. Afternegotiating a treaty with Richard II, duke of Normandy (reigned about996-1026), Eth elred married Richard's sister Emma. This marriageprovided the basis for the subsequent Norma n claim to the Englishthrone. Although Ethelred paid tribute to the plundering Danes, Sweyn I (the Forkbeard), king of Denmark, invaded England in 1013 andproclaimed himself king. In 10 14 Ethelred fled to Normandy butreturned a few months later upon Sweyn's death. Sweyn's son a ndsuccessor, Canute II, invaded the country a year later and, followingEthelred's death, beca me king of England. The circumstances into whichÆthelred was th rust, followed by his meager attempts at leadership,marked his reign as one of the most turbu lent in England?s history. Æthelred?s youth would be a troublesome one, plagued by skepticism andhostility, yet it was n ot without his own weakness and uneasydisposition that the rule of England?s ?unræd? king wa s shaped. Atthe time of his coronation, Æthelred was ?young in years, graceful inmanners, b eautiful in face and comely in appearance?. This howevercould not have improved his ascensio n to the throne in 978, followingthe murder of his half-brother, Edward. This murder, commit ted at thehome of Æthelred?s headstrong mother, prompted largely unspokenallegations, jeopard izing, if not his royal claim, than at leastrespect for the crown. Only a child at the tim e (between the ages of10 and 12) Æthelred escaped most personal ridicule, yet rather thanatte mpting to detach himself from the ?worst crime having beencommitted in Britain?; he succeede d in making his family?s involvementappear increasingly ominous, openly offering an estate t o his mother?in exchange for the land which she previously gave to me?. Æthelredthen, as he l acked the sense to remain quiet and blameless, did notacknowledge his leverage in a situation . He would continually succeed,not only to encounter miserable predicaments, but to prolong t heireffects and worsen his own reputation. In no instance was this more clearly exhibited than at the coming ofDanish invaders, beginnin g two years into Æthelred?s reign andcontinuing for its duration. Before public doubt coul d have relented,removing Æthelred from public scrutiny, ?so great [a] terror of theDanish arm y arose that no one could [?] conceive how to drive themfrom the country? Not for a centur y had such raids been attempted,but neither they nor their initial success can be attribute d toÆthelred?s leadership. This was because the Danish had progressed,emerging with full-ti me soldiers trained in grueling new camps. Thefunding for such soldiers however, was made p ossible by foreigntribute and this fact would soon hold Æthelred?s judgment accountablefo r a rash of Danish victories. As a solution to the Danish raids,the king and his advisers fe lt it most fitting to pay the invasionaway, signing a treaty and offering monetary compensati on. Thistribute, called the Danegeld, would give the Danish an upper hand intheir quest t o conquer England, for in the words of Kipling, ?If onceyou have paid him the Danegeld, You c an never get rid of the Dane." So, despite extensive Viking preparations, spanning generations, itwas Æthelred?s poor tactic s as he searched for an easy solution thatwould change the course of English history for th e worse. Of course, Æthelred alone was not responsible for the political strifeof his entire kingdom . For one, he was still young and consequentlyunder the advice and instruction of his ealdorm en and members of theEnglish court. Also, the remainder of his kingdom lacked enthusiasman d loyalty. Even as raids resumed in 982, courageous ealdormen thatheld sway were not energe tic to stop them. Neither in 1008, whenÆthelred?s kingdom had in its possession ?the best fle et England everhad ?, were his subjects eager for defense, instead turning from theircaptain s and resorting to piracy. Nevertheless, there are aspects ofthis lag in national fervor at tributed to Æthelred?s own lack ofinitiative, as he was himself without sufficient military a ptitude orcourage. As was said in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle ?[?] when the enemywere in the e ast, the English army was kept in the west, and when theywere in the south, our army was in t he north [?]?. As the Vikingraids gained in intensity, like they had at the commissioning of Æthelred?s fleet, so did public despair in the matter of Æthelred?sadministration. Although h is subjects were not equipped for war,neither was Æthelred ready to guide them; once again, h e would serveto leave his people miserable and uninspired. The root of Æthelred?s failings and reputation however, lay with theindividuals who would bet ray him, linked with his own poor choice ofcompany; ?He was pathetically willing to delegat e [?] But he wasdisastrous at picking honest and competent subordinates [?]?. The mostunfortu nate of these delegates, for the sake of the kingdom, was a mannamed Ælfric. One of Æthelred ?s trusted ealdormen, Ælfric was privyto a rare plan of the king?s to trap Danish warriors i n 992.Repaying Æthelred?s trust in him, Ælfric promptly revealed both thestrategy and positio n of his fleet, allowing for another enemyvictory. This instance might inspire pity for Æth elred, were ittruly so simple, but the confidence he placed in Ælfric was neitherwise in it s formation nor terminated when appropriate. Years beforethe betrayal, in 985, Ælfric was ex iled, proving that he had alreadydispleased the court to the point of disciplinary action. Fu rthermore,Ælfric was given command of ships and an army in 1003 and preceded tofabricate an i llness for himself, leaving his troops to their owndevices and another crushing loss. Simil ar examples of ill-chosencompanions included Eadric Streona, Æthelred?s final right-hand man, aptly dubbed an ?evil genius?, and his Norman wife Emma whose?ultimate sympathies lay with th e king?s enemies rather than with theking himself?. Æthelred, having been ?swayed by unwort hy favorites?throughout his lifetime, truly earned the title of ?without goodadvice?, but th e crucial fault lay with his persistent confidence inthese favorites, turning the unfortunat e weakness of one citizen intoa chronic threat to national security. Perhaps, as he learned to be wary of conspirators, Æthelred displayedthe tendency to overcomp ensate, placing trust in no one.Unfortunately, the king?s most fatalistic mistakes were the m aking ofhis own policies and senseless decisions. Already a man withoutgreat popularity, Æt helred should have foreseen the consequences ofimplementing cruel and frivolous laws over hi s subjects. Notsurprisingly, he did not appear to do so and was to declare: ?by theorderin g of God?s providence, I, Æthelred [?decree that] all the Daneswho had sprung up in this isla nd [?] were to be destroyed by a mostjust extermination [?]?. This decree, in 1002, was lud icrous, asmany Danish members of the kingdom were becoming absorbed into thepopulation, and p osed no more of a threat to the kingdom than didÆthelred himself. Nevertheless, in an actio n known as the ?cardinalerror of Æthelred?s reign?, he would go on to massacre hundreds ofpea ceable Danes. Even though the Danes had invaded his kingdom,bringing strife and torment t o England, Æthelred brought not only moretreachery to his people, but consummated his own rep utation in slewingtheir blameless descendants. It must be taken from this that Æthelredkne w not when to admit defeat nor recognize the real threats thatfaced his reign and kingdom.
