Notes:

Conrad of Montferrat From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Conrad of Montferrat (Conrad I of Jerusalem) (mid-1140s ? April 28,1192) was one of the majo r participants in the Third Crusade. He wasde jure king of Jerusalem from late November 1190 , but officiallyelected only in 1192, several days before his death. Early life Conrad was the second son of Marquess William V of Montferrat, "theElder", and his wife Judit h of Babenberg. He was a first cousin ofEmperor Frederick Barbarossa, Louis VII of France an d Leopold V ofAustria. Conrad is first mentioned in a charter in 1160, when serving at thecourt of his maternal uncl e, Conrad, Bishop of Passau, laterArchbishop of Salzburg. (He may have been named after him , or afterhis mother's half-brother, Conrad III of Germany.) His year of birthis unknown, bu t he was probably then about 15. An amiable and handsome man, with great personal courage, he wasdescribed as highly intellige nt and well-educated, fluent in severallanguages ("Brevis Historia Occupationis et Amissioni s Terræ Sanctæ",in Burchardi & Cuonradi Urspergensium Chronicon). He was active indiplomacy f rom his twenties, and became an effective militarycommander, campaigning alongside other memb ers of his family in thestruggles with the Lombard League. He first married an unidentifiedla dy, possibly a daughter of Count Meinhard I of Görz (It: Gorizia),but she was dead by the en d of 1186, without leaving any survivingissue. Conrad in the Byzantine Empire In 1179, following the family's alliance with Manuel I Comnenos,Conrad led an army against Fr ederick Barbarossa's forces, thencommanded by the imperial Chancellor, Archbishop Christian o f Mainz. He defeated them at Camerino in September, taking the Chancellorhostage. (He had prev iously been a hostage of the Chancellor.) He wentto Constantinople to be thanked by the Emper or, returning to Italyshortly after Manuel's death in 1180. Now in his mid-thirties, hisperso nality and good looks made a striking impression at the Byzantinecourt: Nicetas Choniates des cribes him as "of beautiful appearance, comely in life's springtime, exceptional and peerles s in manly courageand intelligence, and in the flower of his body's strength". In the winter of 1186-87, Isaac II Angelus offered his sisterTheodora, as a bride to Conrad' s younger brother Boniface, to renewthe Byzantine alliance with Montferrat, but Boniface wa s married.Conrad, recently widowed, had taken the cross, intending to join hisfather in the K ingdom of Jerusalem; instead, he accepted Isaac's offerand returned to Constantinople in spri ng 1187. On his marriage, he wasawarded the rank of Caesar. However, almost immediately, he h ad tohelp the Emperor defend his throne against a revolt, led by GeneralAlexios Branas. Accor ding to Choniates, Conrad inspired the weakEmperor to take the initiative. He fought heroical ly in the battle inwhich Branas was killed, without shield or helmet, and wearing a linencuir ass instead of mail. He was slightly wounded in the shoulder, butunhorsed Branas, who was the n killed and beheaded by his bodyguards. The defence of Tyre However, feeling that his service had been insufficiently rewarded, wary of Byzantine anti-Lat in sentiment (his youngest brother Renierhad been murdered in 1182) and of possible vengeance -seeking byBranas's family, Conrad set off for the Kingdom of Jerusalem in July1187 aboar d a Genoese merchant vessel. (Some popular modern historieshave claimed that he was fleeing v engeance after committing a privatemurder: this is due to a failure to recognise Branas's nam e, garbledinto "Lyvernas", in the French continuation of William of Tyre, and anerror by Roge r of Howden, who also knew nothing of Branas.) Heevidently intended to join his father, who h eld the castle of St.Elias. He arrived first off Acre, which had recently fallen toSaladin, a nd so sailed north to Tyre, where he found the remnants ofthe Crusader army. After his victor y at the Battle of Hattin over thearmy of Jerusalem, Saladin was on the march north, and ha d alreadycaptured Acre, Sidon, and Beirut. Raymond III of Tripoli and hisstepsons, Reginald o f Sidon and several other leading nobles who hadescaped the battle had fled to Tyre, but mos t were anxious to returnto their own territories to defend them. Raymond of Tripoli was infai ling health, and died soon after he went home. Accorsing to the Old French Continuation of William of Tyre (TheChronicle of Ernoul), Reginal d of Sidon had taken charge in Tyre andwas in the process of negotiating its surrender with S aladin. Conradallegedly threw Saladin's banners into the ditch, and made the Tyriansswear tot al loyalty to him. His rise to power seems to have been lessdramatic in reality. With the sup port of the established Italianmerchant communities in the city, Conrad re-organised the defe nce ofTyre, setting up a commune, similar to those he had so often foughtagainst in Italy. When Saladin's army arrived they found the city well-defended anddefiant. As the chronicler I bn al-Athir wrote of the man the Arabscame to respect and fear as "al-Markis": "He was a devi l incarnate inhis ability to govern and defend a town, and a man of extraordinarycourage". Ty re successfully withstood the siege, and desiring moreprofitable conquest, Saladin's army mov ed on south to Caesarea, Arsuf, and Jaffa. Meanwhile, Conrad sent Archbishop Joscius of Tyre t o theWest in a black-sailed ship, bearing appeals for aid, includingpropaganda drawings of th e horses of Saladin's army stabled (andurinating) in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A few months later, in November 1187, Saladin returned for a secondsiege of Tyre. Conrad wa s still in command of the city, which was nowheavily-fortified and filled with Christian refu gees from Jerusalem. This time Saladin opted for a combined ground and naval assault, setting u p a blockade of the harbour. In an incident attested by theItinerarium Peregrinorum (which i s generally hostile to him), BishopSicardus of Cremona, and Ernoul, Saladin presented Conrad' s agedfather, William V of Montferrat, who had been captured at Hattin, before the walls of th e city, and offered to release his father andbestow great gifts upon Conrad if he surrendere d Tyre. The old mantold his son to stand firm, even when the Egyptians threatened to killhim . Conrad declared that William had lived a long life already, andaimed at him with a crossbo w himself. Saladin allegedly said, "Thisman is an unbeliever and very cruel". But he had succ eeded in callingSaladin's bluff: the old Marquess William was released, unharmed, atTortosa i n 1188, and returned to his son. On December 30, Conrad'sforces launched a dawn raid on the w eary Egyptian sailors, capturingmany of their galleys. The remaining Egyptian ships tried t o escape toBeirut, but the Tyrian ships gave chase, and the Egyptians were forcedto beach the ir ships and flee. Saladin was forced to pull back yetagain, burning his siege engines and sh ips to prevent them fromfalling into enemy hands. Struggle for the crown In summer 1189, Saladin released Guy of Lusignan, the husband of QueenSibylla of Jerusalem, f rom captivity. Guy appeared at Tyre anddemanded that Conrad hand over the keys to the city t o him. Conradrefused this demand, and declared that Guy had forfeited his rights tobe king o f Jerusalem at the Battle of Hattin. He said that he washolding the city until the arrival o f the kings from Europe. By this,he was invoking the agreement which had been made in the eve nt of thedeath of his nephew Baldwin V, and which had been broken by Guy andSibylla: that th e succession was to be determined by the King ofEngland, the King of France, and the Holy Rom an Emperor. He would notallow Guy and Sibylla to enter the city, but did allow them to campou tside Tyre's walls with their retainers. Conrad and Guy did howeverally against Saladin at th e Battle of Acre, the resulting siegelasting two years. When Queen Sibylla and their daughter s died ofdisease during the siege in 1190, Guy, who had only held the crownmatrimonial, no lo nger had a legal claim to the throne - but refusedto step aside. The heiress of Jerusalem was Isabella of Jerusalem, Queen Sibylla'shalf-sister, who was marri ed to Humphrey IV of Toron, of whom she wasfond. However, Conrad had the support of her mothe r Maria Comnena andstepfather Balian of Ibelin, as well as Reginald of Sidon and othermajor n obles of Outremer. They obtained an annullment on the groundsthat Isabella had been under-ag e at the time of the marriage and hadnot been able to give consent. Conrad then married Isabe lla himself, despite rumours of bigamy because of his marriage to Theodora, who wasstill alive . (However, Choniates, who usually expresses strongdisapproval of marital/sexual irregulariti es, makes no mention ofthis. This may imply that a divorce had been effected from theByzantin e side before 1190, by which time it was obvious that Conradwould not be returning.) There we re also objections on grounds ofcanonical 'incest', since Conrad's brother had previously bee n marriedto Isabella's half-sister, and Church law regarded this kind of"affinity" as equal t o a blood-relationship. However, the Papal Legategave his approval. (Opponents claimed he ha d been bribed.) Themarriage was conducted by Philip of Dreux, Bishop of Beauvais - son ofConr ad's cousin Robert of France, Count of Dreux. In this way didConrad obtain the kingship of Je rusalem. Infuriated, Guy of Lusignanchallenged Conrad to single combat, but was ignored. (T o haveconsented to such a trial would have been to accept that Guy had acase.) As Guy was a vassal of Richard I of England for his lands in Poitou,Richard supported him i n this political struggle, while Conrad wassupported by his cousin Leopold V of Austria and s econd-cousin PhilipII of France. Conrad acted as chief negotiator in the surrender ofAcre, an d raised the kings' banners in the city. Afterwards, theparties attempted to come to an agree ment. Guy was confirmed as kingof Jerusalem, and Conrad was made his heir. Conrad would retai n thecities of Tyre, Beirut, and Sidon, and his heirs would inheritJerusalem on Guy's death . In July 1191 Conrad's kinsman, King Philip, decided to return to France, but before he lef t he turned over halfthe treasure plundered from Acre to Conrad, along with all hisprominen t Muslim hostages. King Richard asked Conrad to hand over thehostages, but Conrad refused a s long as he could. After he finallyrelented (since Richard was now leader of the Crusade), R ichard hadall the hostages killed. Conrad did not join Richard on campaign tothe south, prefe rring to remain with his wife Isabella in Tyre -believing his life to be in danger. During that winter, Conrad opened direct negotiations with Saladin, suspecting that Richard' s next move would be to attempt to wrest Tyrefrom him and restore it to the royal domain fo r Guy. His primary aimwas to be recognised as ruler in the north, while Saladin (who wassimul taneously negotiating with Richard for a possible marriagebetween his brother Al-Adil and Ric hard's widowed sister Joanna,Dowager Queen of Sicily) hoped to separate him from the Crusader s. Thesituation took a farcical turn when Richard's envoy, Isabella'sex-husband Humphrey of T oron, spotted Conrad's envoy, Reginald ofSidon, out hawking with Al-Adil. There seems to hav e been noconclusive agreement with Conrad, and Joanna refused marriage to aMuslim. Assassination In April 1192, the kingship was put to the vote. To Richard'sconsternation, the barons of th e Kingdom of Jerusalem unanimouslyelected Conrad as King. Under pressure from the English bar ons, Guywas given (or, more accurately, was forced to purchase) the lordshipof Cyprus (wher e he continued to use king's title) as consolationprize. Richard's nephew Henry II of Champag ne brought the news toTyre, then returned to Acre. But Conrad was never crowned. A few daysla ter, on 28 April, Isabella, who was pregnant, was late in returningfrom the hammam to dine wi th him, so he went to eat at the house ofhis kinsman and friend, Philip, Bishop of Beauvais . The bishop hadalready eaten, so Conrad returned home. On his way, he was attacked bytwo Has hshashin, who stabbed him at least twice in the side and back.He was taken home by his guards , who killed one of his attackers andcaptured the other. Conrad received the last rites befor e dying of hiswounds: he was about 46 or 47. Richard's chroniclers later claimedthat he urge d Isabella to give the city over only to Richard or hisrepresentative: this is open to doubt . He was buried in Tyre, in theChurch of the Hospitallers. "[T]he Frankish marquis, the rule r ofTyre, and the greatest devil of all the Franks, Conrad of Montferrat-- God damn him

-- w as killed," wrote Ibn al-Athir. Certainly, theloss of a potentially formidable king was of ad vantage to theSaracens. The murder remains unsolved. Under torture, the surviving Hashshashinclaimed that Richard wa s behind the killing, though this is impossibleto prove. Another suspect was Humphrey IV of T oron, Isabella's firsthusband. Saladin's involvement has also been alleged, but as Conradwa s in the middle of amicable negotiations with him, this seems lesslikely; also, Saladin himse lf had no love for the Hashshashin. In1970, Patrick A. Williams argued a plausible case for H enry ofChampagne's guilt, but if so, it is difficult to imagine him takingsuch a bold step wi thout his uncle Richard's approval. Later, while returning from the crusade in disguise, Richard wasrecognised by Meinhard II o f Görz, who is described as Conrad's nephew(which suggests the identity of his first wife), a nd then imprisonedby his cousin Leopold V of Austria. Conrad's murder was one of thecharges a gainst him. Richard requested that the Hashshashin vindicatehim, and in a letter allegedly fr om their leader, Rashid al-Din Sinan, they appeared to do so. The letter claimed that in 1191 , Conrad hadcaptured a Hashshashin ship that had sought refuge in Tyre during astorm. He kill ed the captain, imprisoned the crew, and stripped theship of its treasure. When Rashid al-Di n Sinan requested that theship's crew and treasure be returned, he was rebuffed, and so a dea thsentence was issued for Conrad of Montferrat. However, this letter isbelieved to have bee n forged: Sinan was already dead, and apart fromthis letter and the chronicle entries based u pon it, there is no otherevidence for the Hashashin being involved in shipping. The timing of the murder, and its consequences - the pregnant Isabella was marriedoff within the week to He nry of Champagne, much to the disgust ofMuslim commentators - suggest that the chief motive m ay be sought inFrankish politics. Family Conrad's brother Boniface was the leader of the Fourth Crusade. Theiryoungest brother Renie r was a son-in-law of Byzantine emperor Manuel IComnenus, and the eldest, William, had been t he first husband ofSibylla and father of Baldwin V of Jerusalem. Conrad was also brieflyMarqu ess of Montferrat, following his father's death in 1191. InMontferrat he was succeeded by Bon iface, but his own heiress was bornposthumously: a daughter Maria of Montferrat, 'La Marquise ', who in1205 became Queen of Jerusalem on Isabella's death, but died young inchildbirth. Con rad's ex-wife, Theodora, was still living in themid-late 1190s, when she was having the monas tery of Dalmatiosconverted into a convent, possibly for her own residence. Conrad in fiction, film and art The Monferrine court was Occitan in its literary culture, and providedpatronage to numerous t roubadors. Bertran de Born and Peirol mentionConrad in songs composed at the time of the Thir d Crusade. He was seenas a heroic figure, the noble defender of Tyre - the "Marqués valens ep ros" ("the valiant and worthy Marquess") as Peirol called him. InCarmina Burana 50: Heu, voc e flebili cogor enarrare, he is describedas "marchio clarissimus, vere palatinus" ("the mos t famous Marquess, truly a paladin"). However, subsequently, the long-term prejudice ofpopula r English-language writing towards Richard I and his "Lionheart"myth has adversely affected p ortrayals of Conrad in English-languagefiction and film. Because Richard (and his chroniclers ) opposed hisclaim to the throne, he is generally depicted negatively, even whenRichard himse lf is treated with some scepticism. An entirely fictionalised, unambiguously wicked version of Conradappears in Walter Scott's Th e Talisman, misspelled as 'Conrade ofMontserrat' (the ailing novelist apparently misreading ' f' as a long's' in his sources) and described as a "marmoset" and "popinjay". Heis also a vil lain in Maurice Hewlett's fanciful The Life and Death ofRichard Yea-and-Nay (1900). He is als o briefly depicted in a negativelight in Ronald Welch's Knight Crusader (1954): the descripti on owesmuch to his portrayal in Cecil B. de Mille's The Crusades, mentionedbelow. The nadir o f his fictional appearances is in Graham Shelby's1970 novel The Kings of Vain Intent. In this , he is thoroughlydemonised - depicted as a sinister figure, physically resembling avampire , who habitually beats and rapes Isabella. These works reflectthe later Renaissance and Gothi c novel cultural/ethnic stereotype ofthe 'Machiavellian' Italian: corrupt, scheming, dandifie d, not averseto poisoning, even (as in Shelby's novel) sexually sadistic. Incontrast, the Rus sian-born French novelist Zoé Oldenbourg gives him amore positive but fleeting cameo-role - p roud, strong, and as handsomeas Choniates described him - in her 1946 novel Argile et Cendre s (Clayand Ashes, published in English as The World Is Not Enough in 1948). In film, he has been consistently depicted as a villain, and withscant regard for accuracy. I n Cecil B. de Mille's 1935 film TheCrusades, he is played by Joseph Schildkraut as a schemin g traitor, plotting Richard's death with Prince John in England at a time when hewas actuall y already defending Tyre. The 1954 film King Richard andthe Crusaders, loosely based on The T alisman, similarly depicts him asa villain, played by Michael Pate. The 1963 Egyptian film E l NaserSalah el Dine also shows Scott's influence in its hostility towardsConrad (played by M ahmoud El-Meliguy) and Philip, while depictingRichard more favourably. In painting and drawing, Conrad figures in a small contemporarymanuscript sketch of his shi p sailing to Tyre in the Annals of Genoa, and various illustrations to Scott's The Talisman. T here is animaginary portrait of him, c. 1843, by François-Edouard Picot for theSalles des Cro isades at Versailles: it depicts him as a handsome, rather pensive man in his forties, wearin g a coronet and fancifulpseudo-mediæval costume. He is shown with dark hair and beard; it ism ore likely that, like the rest of his family, he was blond.

Notes:

Renier of Montferrat From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Renier of Montferrat (1162?1183) was the fifth son of William III ofMontferrat and Judith o f Babenberg. He became son-in-law of theByzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnenus and Caesar in 117 9, and was latermurdered in a Byzantine power-struggle. It was Manuel who suggested the marriage of his daughter Maria to ason of William III. The on ly eligible son was the youngest,17-year-old Renier, whom the Byzantine chronicler Nicetas Ch oniatesdescribed as blond and beardless. With his marriage to the 30-year-oldprincess, Renie r was given the title Caesar, renamed "John", and (itis believed) granted Thessalonica as a n estate for life, a pronoia.Maria was second in line to the throne, and had only been depriv ed ofthe succession by the birth of her much younger half-brother Alexius. Thus, Renier becam e entangled in the perpetual power struggle aroundthe Byzantine throne. With the death of Manuel I in September 1180, the throne fell to theboy Alexius II, with hi s mother, the empress dowager Maria, acting asregent. Maria caused a scandal by taking the pr otosebastos Alexius asa lover. This, combined with her Latin-friendly views triggered a plott o overthrow the Emperor, and install Maria and Renier on the throne. The plot was discovered , and several conspirators arrested. Maria andRenier sought refuge in the Hagia Sofia cathedr al with some 150 oftheir followers. Fighting ensued, later dubbed the Holy War as it tookplac e in that most holy church. Eventually, the conspirators wereoffered an amnesty to end the ho stilities. Both the Emperor and the conspirators fell victims to another usurperthough, as Andronicus Co mnenus returned from his exile with an army insupport. Alexius II was forced to recognice And ronicus as hisco-Emperor, and was later murdered. Renier, as a contender to thethrone, share d his fate, as did Maria. Andronicus' takeover was marredby the massacre of the Latin populat ion that followed. It is believethat this massacre was one of the reasons later used as an ex cuse bythe leaders of the Fourth Crusade. Renier's surviving older brotherBoniface seems to h ave based his claim to Thessalonica on his latebrother's title.
