Coloman of Hungary From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Coloman (Hungarian:Könyves Kálmán, Slovak and Croatian: Koloman) (1070- February 3, 1116) wa s King of Hungary from 1095 to 1116. He was the son of Geza I of Hungary and Zsófia (Sophia). László I wanted Kálmán's brother Álmos to succeed him as King ofHungary. (According to the ch ronicles, Kálmán may have had a physicaldeformity, which would have made him unfit to be kin g per medievalbeliefs about such things.) Not wanting to abandon his eldest nephewcompletely , he wished instead to make him a bishop. Kálmán wasaccordingly sent abroad to acquire his su bsequently famous learning, which earned him the appellation "Könyves", or "Bookish". (At thet ime, this was not a compliment. History has been kind to Kálmán,however, so modern historie s are more apt to translate the nickname as"The Wise" or similar.) The exact circumstances of how Kálmán acquired the throne afterLászló's death are unknown; am ong other difficulties, he may have hadto get papal dispensation, because ordained clergy cou ld not becomeking. (The sources are unclear on whether Kálmán was actuallyordained. His late r laws show that he had no problem with marriedclergy, so his eventual marriages are no evide nce in this matter.) László died before he could fulfill his promise of leading a Crusade.Kálmán did not find it n ecessary to fulfill the promise of hispredecessor, but did concede at first to let the crusad ing armies gothrough Hungary. When the first such army (the First Crusade in 1096)proceeded t o pillage its way through the country, he put greater andgreater restrictions on subsequent a rmies, such as taking hostages andmustering his own army to guard the progress. (Needless t o say, theseactions did not endear him to contemporary chroniclers; descriptionsof an ugly, h airy, crosseyed man are certainly exaggerated.) Kálmán changed Hungary's foreign policy: while László I. had asked forthe Holy Roman Emperor' s help (instead of the pope's) when waging waron Croatia, Kálmán wanted to stay on good term s with the Holy See.This didn't prevent him from subjugating Croatia, nor from conqueringDalm atia ahead of the similarly-inclined Venetians. The popeeventually acceded him the right of a ppointing bishops. Kálmán's court was a center of learning and literature. BishopHartvik's Life of St. Stephen , a chronicle of Hungary, the shorter ofthe extant Legends of St. Gellért, and several collec tions of laws allstem from his reign. One of his most famous laws was half a millenniumahea d of its time: De strigis vero quae non sunt, nulla ampliusquaestio fiat (As for the matter o f witches [more exactly "strigas",which isn't exactly the same as "witch"], there is no suc h thing, therefore no further investigations or trials are to be held). Álmos made several attempts to take over Kálmán's throne, but all wereunsuccessful. After rep eatedly forgiving his wayward brother, Kálmánwas finally forced to bring justice against hi m in 1115, although eventhen he commuted the familial death sentence required by law to these ntence of blinding Álmos and his young son Béla. Kálmán died February 3, 1116. He was buried in Székesfehérvár, next toSt. Stephen. He married twice, first in 1097 to Felicia (called Busila in Hungary),daughter of Roger I o f Sicily. They had three children: Zsófia (Sophia) István (II) (1102-1131) László (1101-1112) Felicia died in 1102, and a second marriage was arranged in 1104between Kálmán and Eufemia o f Kiev, daughter of Prince Vladimir II ofKiev. However a few years later she was caught in ad ultery andimmediately divorced and sent back to her father. Eufemia bore a sonin Kiev, name d Borisz Conrad, in 1112. After Stephen II died in 1131,Borisz became a contender for the thr one, but because Kálmán hadrefused to acknowledge Borisz as his son, the Hungarian magnatesig nored him and gave the Hungarian throne to a cousin.

Notes:

Matilda of Tuscany From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Matilda, countess of Tuscany (1046 ? July 24, 1115), was the principalItalian supporter of Po pe Gregory VII during the investiturecontroversy, and is one of the few medieval women to b e remembered forher military accomplishments. She is sometimes called Matilda ofCanossa, afte r the ancestral family castle of Canossa. Her father was Boniface, marquis of Tuscany and count of Reggio,Modena, Mantua, Brescia, an d Ferrara. As this string of titlesimplies, he held a great estate on both sides of the Apenn ines, thoughthe greater part was on the Lombardy and Emilia side. Her mother was Beatrice of Lorraine, a daughter of Frederick II, Dukeof Upper Lorraine, and o f Matilda of Swabia. Beatrice was a decendentof the Merovingian king Theodoric III. Matilda was her parents' youngest child, but her father was murderedin 1052, and her older si ster and brother died soon afterwards, leaving the eight-year-old Matilda as a great heiress u nder hermother's guardianship. Two years later Beatrice re-married, in part toprotect her dau ghter's inheritance, to Godfrey the Bearded, a cousinwho had been duke of Upper Lorraine befo re rebelling against EmperorHenry III. Matilda's family became heavily involved in the series of disputedpapal elections of the las t half of the 11th century. Her stepfather'sbrother Frederick became Pope Stephen IX (or X) , while both of thefollowing two popes, Nicholas II and Alexander II had been Tuscanbishops . Her parents' forces were used to protect these popes andfight against anti-popes. Some stor ies claim the adolescent Matildatook the field in some of these engagements, but no evidenc e supportsthis. Sometime in this period Matilda married her stepbrother Godfrey theHunchback, son of Godfre y the Bearded's first marriage. Matilda gavebirth in 1071 to a daughter, Beatrix. Virtually a ll currentbiographies of Matilda assert that the child died in its first year ofinfancy, howe ver genealogies contemporaneous with MichelangeloBuonarroti claimed that Beatrix survived, an d Michelangelo himselfclaimed to be a descendent of Beatrix and, therefore, Matilda.Michelang elo's claim was supported at the time by the reigning Countof Canossa. The Catholic Church, p ossibly motivated by its claimagainst her property, has always asserted that Matilda never ha d anychild at all. Matilda and Godfrey became estranged after Godfrey theBearded's death in 1 069, and he returned to Germany, where heeventually received the duchy of Lower Lorraine. Both Matilda's mother and husband died in 1076, leaving her in solecontrol of her great Itali an patrimony as well as lands in Lorraine, while at the same time matters in the conflict betw een Pope GregoryVII and the German king Henry IV were at a crisis point. Pope hadexcommunicat ed King, causing a weakening of Henry's German support andmotivating him to cross the Alps du ring that winter, and appear earlyin 1077 as a barefoot penitent in the snow before the gate s ofMatilda's ancestral castle of Canossa, where the pope was staying. This famous meeting did not settle matters for long. In 1080 Henry wasexcommunicated again, a nd the next year he crossed the Alps, aimingeither to get the pope to end the excommunicatio n and crown himemperor, or to depose the pope in favor of someone more co-operative. Matilda controlled all the western passages over the Apennines, forcing Henry to approach Rom e via Ravenna. Even with this route open,he would have difficulties besieging Rome with a hos tile territory athis back. Some of his allies defeated her at the battle of VoltaMantovana (n ear Modena) in October 1080, and by December the citizensof Lucca, then the capital of Tuscan y, had revolted and driven out herally Bishop Anselm. In 1081 Matilda suffered some further losses, and Henry formallydeposed her in July. But thi s was not enough to eliminate her as asource of trouble, for she retained substantial allodia l holdings. Sheremained as Pope Gregory's chief intermediary for communication withnorthern E urope, even as he lost control of Rome and holed up in theCastel Sant'Angelo. After Henry ha d obtained the Pope's seal, shewrote to supporters in Germany only to trust papal messages th at camethough her. Henry's control of Rome enabled him to have his choice of pope,Antipope Clement III, consecra ted and in turn for this pope to crownHenry as emperor. That done, Henry returned to Germany , leaving it tohis allies to attempt Matilda's dispossesion. These attempts founderedafter Ma tilda routed them at Sorbara (near Modena) on July 2, 1084. Gregory VII died in 1085, and Matilda's forces once again took thefield in support of a new p ope, Victor III. Sometime around 1090 Matilda married again, to Welf V of Bavaria, froma family (the Welfs) wh ose very name was later to become synomynouswith alliance to the popes in their conflict wit h the German emperors(see Guelphs and Ghibellines). This forced Henry to return to Italy, wher e he drove Matilda into the mountains. But again he was humbledbefore Canossa, this time i n a military defeat in October 1092, fromwhich his influence in Italy never recovered. Matilda's death of gout in 1115 marked the end of an era in Italianpolitics. She had no heir s and left her allodial property to the Pope, while Henry had promised some of the cities in h er territory he wouldappoint no successor after he deposed her. In her place the leadingcitiz ens of these cities took control, and we enter the era of thecity-states in northern Italy. In the 17th century her body was removed to the Vatican, where it nowlies in St. Peter's Basi lica. The story of Matilda and Henry IV featured in Luigi Pirandello's playEnrico IV.

Notes:

Roger III, Duke of Apulia From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Roger III (1118 ? 2 or 12 May 1148), duke of Apulia from 1134, was theeldest son of King Roge r II of Sicily. Roger makes his first appearance in the chronicles at Melfi in 1129,jointly accepting with hi s father and his younger brother Tancred thefealty of the rebellious peninsular barons. Afte r his investiture asduke of Apulia in 1134, where he was perhaps put under the tutelage orgua rdianship of Robert of Selby, he took part in his father'scampaigns there, distinguishing him self in the campaigns of 1137against Ranulf of Alife, whom Pope Innocent II and the Emperor L othairII had invested as rival duke of Apulia. His first major engagementwas the Battle of Ri gnano on 30 October; a battle in which moreexperienced warriors, like his father, fled and so me, like DukeSergius VII of Naples, died. Roger's bravery, and success in the firstcharge, a t Rignano solidified his martial reputation early. After Ranulf's death (1139), Apulia was secured, but Innocent and thedispossessed Prince Robe rt II of Capua began to march on the prince'snominal capital. At Galluccio, Roger ambushed th e papal troops withonly a thousand knights and captured the pope and his entourage. Threeday s later, on July 25 at Mignano, Innocent confirmed the elder Rogeras king, the younger as duk e, and the third son, Alfonso, as prince ofCapua?officially severing Robert from his support . Next, Duke Rogertook the city of Naples into his possession and made it an integralpart o f the kingdom, ending the republican government which hadcontinued after Sergius' death. In 1140, after the promulgation of the king's Assizes of Ariano, thefirst ducats were minte d bearing an effigy of the young duke inbattledress beside his father, with their hands on th e Cross. Theducat was named after the duchy of Apulia. Roger and Alfonso, thesecond son Tancr ed being dead, then moved into the Abruzzi to harasspapal lands. At that time, late in 1140 , Roger's bride to be,Isabella, arrived from the court of her father, Theobald II ofChampagne . Roger's most famous consort, however, was his mistress,Emma, the daughter of Achard II, Cou nt of Lecce, with whom he had anillegitimate son, Tancred, later king. In that same year (114 0),Richard III of Gaeta died and his duchy was given to Roger. In 1148, barely thirty, Duke Roger died an unknown death in an unknownlocation. He was mourne d by the Arab poet Abu ed-Daw, who said, "thearms of the brave have fallen . . . and the eloq uent seek for words invain." Roger was buried in the chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene next toth e old Cathedral of Palermo. He was later transferred to an eponymouschapel now in the barrack s of San Giacomo. His successor was his onlysurviving brother, William, later king.
