Uchtred, Lord of Galloway From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Uchtred mac Fergusa (c. 1120 - September 22, 1174) was Lord ofGalloway from 1161 to 1174, rul ing jointly with his half-brother GilleBrigte. They were sons of Fergus of Galloway; their mo thers' names areunknown, but Uchtred may have been born to one of the manyillegitimate daught ers of Henry I of England. As a boy he was sent as a hostage to the court of King Máel Coluim IVof Scotland. When his fa ther, Prince Fergus, died in 1161, Uchtred wasmade co-ruler of Galloway along with Gilla Brig te. They participatedin the disastrous invasion of Northumberland under William I ofScotlan d in 1174. King William was captured, and the Galwegiansrebelled, taking the opportunity to s laughter the Norman and Saxonsettlers in their land. During this time Uchtred was brutallymut ilated, blinded, castrated, and killed by his brother Gille Brigteand Gille Brigte's son, Máe l Coluim. Gille Brigte then seized controlof Galloway entire. Uchtred had married Gunhilda of Dunbar, and they were the parents ofLochlann and Eve of Gallo way, wife of Walter de Berkeley.

Notes:

Fergus of Galloway If it had not been for Fergus of Galloway (ruled 1120-1161) whoestablished himself in Gallowa y, the region would rapidly have beenabsorbed by Scotland. This did not happen because Fergus , his sons, grandsons and great-grandson Alan, Lord of Galloway shifted theirallegiance betwee n Scottish and English kings. Alan died in 1234. He had three daughters and an illegitimate sonThomas. The 'Community of Ga lloway' wanted Thomas as their 'king'.Alexander III of Scotland supported the daughters (or r ather theirhusbands) and invaded Galloway. The Community of Galloway was defeated, and Galloway divided upbetween Alan's daughters, thu s bringing Galloway's independentexistence to an end. Fergus of Galloway From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Fergus of Galloway was King, or Lord, of Galloway from an unknown date(probably in the 1110s) , until his death in 1161. He was the founderof that "sub-kingdom," the resurrector of the Bi shopric of Whithorn, the patron of new abbeys (e.g. Dundrennan Abbey), and much elsebesides. H e became a legend after his death, although his actual lifeis clouded in mystery. Origins of Fergus Fergus of Galloway first appears in the historical sources in 1136.His origins and his parent age, however, are something of a mystery.Over the years, Fergus? origins have been the subjec t of muchdiscussion and even more fanciful fictional elaboration by historicalwriters. One theory is that Fergus was descended from a great pedigree ofGall-Gaidhel kings, who migh t have been known as Clann Dubgaill, claiming descent from a certain Dubgall. Adding believabi lity to thisview is the fact that the chief branch of descendants of Somairle macGilla Brigt e took the name MacDougall, while the cognate nameMacDouall was popular in Galloway. However , since the Argyll namecomes only from after Fergus' time, this theory cannot be accepted. A similar theory traces Fergus from a certain man called "Gilli," aGall-Gaidhel "Jarl" of th e Western Isles. The reasoning in this caseis that the Roman de Fergus, an early 13th centur y French languageArthurian romance, names its eponymous hero's father as Soumilloit(Somairle) . The argument is that the latter was descended from theJarl Gilli, and therefore that both S omairles had Jarl Gilli as acommon ancestor. Likewise, yet another theory identifies Fergus'f ather with the obscure Sumarlidi Hauldr, a character in theOrkneyinga Saga. Writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries had advanced theidea that Fergus was the ch ildhood companion of David I at theAnglo-Norman court of King Henry I of England. This idea w as givencredence by his marriage to the daughter of King Henry I, his goodrelationship with D avid, and his friendliness towards Anglo-Normanculture. In reality such a relationship is pure fiction. Fergus was almostcertainly a native Galwegian . The Roman de Fergus may not be entitledto general reliability in matters of historical corr ectness, butSoumilloit is unlikely to have been totally made up. Moreover,Somairle (anglicize d either as Somerled or Sorley) is a thoroughlyGall-Gaidhel name, and makes perfect sense i n the context. In light ofthe absence of other evidence, we have to accept that Fergus' fathe rprobably bore the name Somairle. Other than that, we simply cannot sayanything about Fergus ' origins for sure. Origins of the Galloway Kingdom Contrary to some popular conceptions, there is no evidence thatGalloway was ever part of th e Kingdom of Strathclyde. Thus Galloway(west of the Nith at least) lay outside of the traditi onal areaclaimed by Kingdom of Alba, Strathclyde's successor state in the area.Galloway, ofte n defined as all of the area to the south and west ofthe Clyde and west of the River Annan, l ay outside of traditionalScottish territory. Though it formed part of the northern mainland o fBritain, Galloway was just as much a part of the Irish Sea; part ofthat "Hiberno-Norse" worl d of the Gall-Gaidhel lords of the Isle ofMan, Dublin and the Hebrides. For instance, the ex-King of Dublin and Man, Echmarcach mac Ragnaill, had the title Rex Innare nn ("King of Rhinns") attributed to him on hisdeath in 1065. The western section of Gallowa y had been firmlyattached to the Isle of Man, and Norse and Gaelic-Norse settlementnames fro m the 10th and 11th centuries are spread all along thecoastal lands of south-western "Scotlan d" and north-western "England." In the late 11th century, the Norwegian King Magnus III Berrføtt("Barelegs") led a campaign o f subjugation in the Irish Sea world. In1097, he sent his vassal, Ingimundr, to take contro l of the Kingdom(s)of Man and the Isles. However, when this man was killed, Magnushimself lau nched the first of his two invasions, the campaigns of1098-1099 and of 1102-1103. In the form er campaign, he took control ofthe Western Isles of Scotland, and deposed King Lagmann of Man .(Incidentally, this campaign also brought him to Wales, where hekilled the Earl of Chester a nd the Earl of Shrewsbury, who were at warwith the Prince of Gwynedd). In this campaign, Magn us almost certainlybrought Galloway under his suzerainty too. Magnus, moreover, gainedthe rec ognition of these conquests from the then-king of Alba, Etgairmac Maíl Coluim. On his second campaign, Magnus went to Man, and with a huge fleetattacked Dublin and attempte d to bring the submission of Muircertachmac Toirrdelbach, the Ui Briain King of Munster. Th e campaign resultedin an alliance between the two kings, and the arranged marriage ofMagnus ' son Siguðr to Muircertach's daughter Bláthmin. The alliancemitigated the threat of Domnal l mac Lochlainn, King of Ailech, bringing stability to the Irish Sea world, and security to Ma gnus' newIrish Sea "Empire." However, it all went wrong when Magnus was killedon his way bac k to Norway on a minor raid in Ulster. Much of Magnus'work lay in ruins. In the view of the main authority on medieval Galloway, Richard Oram, these events provide th e key to understanding the origins of theFergusian Kingdom of Galloway. It was this power vac uum, he suggests, that facilitated the creation of the Kingdom of Galloway, the kingdomwhich F ergus came to lead and apparently created. The Roman infersthat Fergus' father, Somairle, wa s a poor warrior who benefittedgreatly by marriage to a noblewoman, from whom Fergus inherite d power.Perhaps then, Fergus' father was a self-made warrior who married intothe House of Man ; perhaps Fergus inherited and further consolidatedhis position, building the kingdom out o f the ruins left by the deathof Magnus Barelegs. Marriage & the Building of the Lordship Fergus is known to have had in his lifetime two wives, the names ofboth being unknown. By the se wives, though, three children are known: Gille Brigte Uchtred Affraic Western Galloway and 1st Marriage Fergus' likely power base was the area of Galloway between the riversDee and Cree. It has bee n suggested by Oram that he advanced his powerin the west through marriage to an unknown heir ess. The primary basisof this reasoning is that upon Fergus' death, Gille Brigte got theweste rn part. Gille Brigte was the older son, but because he was notthe product of marriage to Fer gus' royal wife, he was regarded as thelesser. The fact that he got the west when he should h ave gottennothing has led Oram to believe that he got the west because of hismother. England and Second Marriage Fergus certainly did marry an illegitimate daughter of HenriBeauclerc, King Henry I of Englan d. Her name, however, is unknown. Oneof the candidates is Sibylla, the widow of King Alaxanda ir I mac MaílCholuim of Scotland, but there is little evidence for this. Anothercandidate cou ld be Elisabeth; but likewise, there is little evidence.Names aside, the marriage seems to ha ve been part of a forward policyof Henry I in the northwest of his dominions and the Irish Se a zone ingeneral, which was engineered in the second decade of the 12thcentury. It was durin g this time that Fergus was calling himself rexGalwitensium (""King of Galloway""). However , while his father-in-lawlived, Fergus, like his fellow sub-king, David fils de Malcolm(other wise known as King David I of Scotland), remained a faithful"vassal" to Henry. Marriage of Affraic to Man As part of Fergus? pretensions in the Irish Sea world, Fergus madehimself the father-in-law o f the Manx king by marrying off hisdaughter Affraic to King Óláfr I Gothfrithsson of Man (111 4-1153).Óláfr was in many ways a client of the English and Scottish Kings, andso within thi s new Anglo-Celtic Irish Sea system, Fergus couldestablish a dominant position. This positio n lasted until the death ofÓláfr in 1153 at the hands of his brother?s sons, who had been bro ughtup in Dublin, and were waiting in the wings. Elevation of Whithorn A related development was Fergus' resurrection of the Bishopric ofWhithorn, an ancient Galweg ian See first established by theexpansionary Northumbrians under the jurisdiction of the Arch bishop ofYork. The last Bishop of Whithorn, Heathored, had been noted in theyear 833. Thereaf ter nothing is heard; and it is likely the Bishopricdisappeared with Northumbrian power, a de cline marked by the sack ofYork by the Danes in 867. In the following two and a half centurie s,Galloway, if and where jurisdiction actually existed, it seems to havebeen under the jurisd iction of the Bishop of Man in the west, withDurham and Glasgow in the east. In terms of the See's resurrection, we know that in late 1128 PopeHonorius II ordered the Bis hop-elect of Whithorn to appear before theArchbishop of York. The would-be Bishop was a cleri c called GilleAldan (Gille Aldain), and the Archbishop was Thurstan. York had beencoming unde r increasing pressure from the ambitions of Canterbury, andthe northern English metropolita n had only two suffragans (Durham andMan). He needed three in fact to hold proper Archiepisco pal elections. It is likely that York and Fergus did a deal. The involvement of KingDavid I ca n be discounted on the grounds of his anti-York policies, and his total inclination to appoin t English or French clerics, andnot Gaelic ones like Gille Aldan. The deal ensured that Galwe gianchurch would not undermine Fergus? independence of both Man orScotland, and secured an id entity for the new kingdom in the frameworkof northern Britain and the Isles. A further point to be noted is that the sources record that thewarrior-Bishop Wimund attacke d another Bishop, an attack aimed to tryand bring the other bishop under his control. Scholar s such as AndrewMacDonald and Richard Oram agree that this Bishop was in fact GilleAldan of W hithorn. It is likely then that the elevation of Whithornincurred the wrath of the Bishop o f the Isles, indicating perhapssomething of the status of the Galwegian church before Fergus ? reign. Fergus & David I On Henry's death in late 1135, Fergus? relationship with the Kings ofthe English could not b e maintained. David I of Scotland, ruler ofmuch of Scotland and northern England, assumed a p osition ofdominance. The balance of power swung firmly in David?s favor. It wasno longer poss ible to maintain a position of real independence fromthe Scottish king. It is at this point F ergus comes into contemporarysources. In summer 1136, David I was in attendance at the consec rationof Bishop John?s cathedral in Glasgow. Here was a big gathering ofScottish and Norman n obles. Fergus is recorded as having been inattendance too (with his son Uchtred), leading a l ist of southwesternGaelic nobility. The gathering also assisted David?s ambitions against the new and weakKing of the English, St ephen. Galwegian contingents are recorded inseveral sources as being present during the subse quent campaign and atthe defeat of David at the Battle of the Standard in 1138. We cannotkno w for sure if Fergus was there, but the peace treaty made betweenDavid and Stephen in 1139 st ipulated that one of Fergus? sons(certainly Uchtred) be given as a hostage. Fergus & Máel Coluim IV In 1153, King David died. The personal relationship of superioritywhich David had enjoyed ove r Fergus was not meant to apply to theformer?s successors. David was succeeded by the boy-kin g, Máel ColuimIV. Yet Fergus initially seems to have had a good relationship withthe new King . In 1156, Fergus captured and handed over Máel Coluim?srival Domnall mac Maíl Choluim, the M acheth pretender to the Kingdomof the Scots. Still, by the end of the decade Fergus and King Máel Coluim were notfriends. In 1157, the boy -king?s position in southern Scotland wasweakened, when he was forced by King Henry II to han d over Cumbria andNorthumbria. It was probably this blow to Máel Coluim?s power thatgave Ferg us his chance to reassert his independence. The Chronicle ofHolyrood reports that Máel Colui m led three campaigns against Fergusin 1160. The context was that Máel Coluim had been in Fra nce with hislord Henry II, and had just returned to Scotland. Many of the nativeScottish magn ates besieged Máel Coluim at Perth upon his return. However, Fergus was not one of them, and a ny connection between theso-called Revolt of the Earls and Fergus has no evidence tosubstanti ate it. On the other hand, it is highly suggestive that thisrevolt occurred in exactly same y ear as the invasion of Galloway. Fergus and the Meic Fergusa Fergus? later years were mired by the squabbling of his two sons.Perhaps too Fergus? longevit y was testing his sons? patience. WalterDaniel reported that, in relation to the mid-1150s, F ergus was: ?? incensed against his sons, and the sons raging against the fatherand each other ? The Kin g of Scotland could not subdue, nor the bishoppacify their mutual hatreds, rancour and tyrann y. Sons were againstfather, father against sons, brother against brother, daily pollutingth e unhappy little land with bloodshed.? (Walter Daniel, ??Life ofAilred??, 45-6; quoted in Ora m, pp. 78-9) Whether because of Gille Brigte and Uchtred, or because of MáelColuim?s campaigns, Fergus wa s forced into retirement, becoming a monkat Holyrood Abbey in 1160. He died the following yea r. Legend of Fergus Fergus' descendants, when recounting their genealogy, invariably datedtheir lines back to Fer gus. Fergus was one of the few secular Gaelicfigures of the High Middle Ages to attain a lege ndary status in thewider world of Christendom. Roman de Fergus Around the beginning of the 13th century, someone in Scotland composedin French an Arthuria n romance dedicated to the Galwegian King. Thisis the so-called Roman de Fergus. The Roman d e Fergus, as it happens,is the earliest piece of non-Celtic vernacular literature to emergefr om Scotland. According to tradition, the author was a man calledGuillaume le Clerc (William t he Clerk). Certain scholars havehypothesized that it was written for the inauguration of Ferg us'descendant, Alan mac Lochlainn (or perhaps more appropriately in thiscontext, Alan fils d e Roland). More recently, D.D.R. Owen, a StAndrews scholar of medieval French, has proposed t hat the author wasWilliam Malveisin. William was at one point a royal clerk, to KingWillia m I before becoming Bishop of Glasgow and St Andrews. The Romangratifies Fergus' descendant s by making him a Perceval-like knight ofKing Arthur. The Roman circulated all over the Frankish world of northwesternEurope for centuries to come . It is a tribute to Fergus' legendarystatus as a monarch and as the founding father of Gallo way.

Notes:

Gille Brigte, Lord of Galloway From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gille Brigte or Gilla Brigte mac Fergusa of Galloway (?1185), alsoknown as Gillebrigte, Gill e Brighde, Gilbridge, Gilbride, etc, andmost famously known in French sources as Gilbert, wa s Lord of Galloway(from 1161 with Uchtred; 1174 alone, to 1185). Gilla Brigte was one oftwo s ons of the great Fergus, the builder of the "Kingdom" ofGalloway. Background, marriage and family In the struggle that arose after the death of Fergus between GilleBrigte and Uchtred, Gille B rigte emerged the stronger. Nevertheless, such a situation was not inevitable. Gille Brigte wa s the older son,but because he was not the product of marriage to Fergus' royal wife,he was r egarded as the lesser in feudal law. The partitioning ofGalloway left Fergus with the wester n part, the part less exposed tothe arms of the Scottish and English Kings. We do not know for certain to whom Gille Brigte was married. RichardOram suggests the stron g likelihood that his main wife was a daughterof Donnchad II, Mormaer or Earl of Fife and th e most important nativelord in Scotland. The introduction of the name Donnchad (or Duncan)int o the family naming pattern is some evidence of this, as is thelater marriage of Gille Brigte 's great-granddaughter Marjorie to theFife petty-lord Adam de Kilconquhar. Gille Brigte had two known children: Donnchad Máel Coluim Events of 1174 & Approach to England From 1161 until 1174, Gille Brigte and Uchtred shared the lordship, with Gille Brigte in the w est, and Uchtred in the east. In 1174, KingWilliam le Lion of Scotland invaded England in a n attempt to regainNorthumberland. He brought with him the two meic Fergusa, Gille Brigtean d Uchtred. During the invasion, William was caught off-guard, andcaptured while besieging th e castle at Alnwick. Benedict ofPeterborough reported that: When they [the brothers] heard that their lord the king of Scotlandwas taken, they immediatel y returned with their Galwegians to theirown lands, and at once expelled from Galloway all th e bailiffs andguards whom the king of Scotland had set over them; and all theEnglish and Fren ch whom they could seize they slew; and all thedefences and castles which the king of Scotlan d had established intheir land they besieged, captured and destroyed, and slew all whomthey t ook within them (A.O. Anderson, p. 256) Despite the implications that both brothers were involved, it is clearthat only Gilla Brigt e was, and that Uchtred opposed him. For Benedictgoes on to tell us that, in relation to th e same year, Gille Brigte'sson Máel Coluim was besieging Uchtred on an island in Galloway. Má elColuim mac Gille Brigte captured Uchtred. Uchtred was blinded, castrated and had his tongu e cut out. What Gille Brigte did at this time might have changed British historyfor ever. Gille Brigte s ent a messenger, and asked King Henry II fordirect lordship (i.e. without the Scottish king a s a middle man).Henry sent a delegation to investigate. This delegation consisted ofRoger d e Hoveden and Robert de Vaux. Thanks to the former, we have arecord of the embassy. It is rep orted by Benedict of Peterborough thatGille Brigte offered the King of England a one-off paym ent of 2000marks, and a yearly tribute of 500 cows and 500 swine, if the Kingwould "remove th em [the Galwegians] from the servitude of the king ofScotland" (Anderson, p.258). However, when the delegation discovered the fate of Uchtred, Henry'scousin, they rejected th e request. Gille Brigte's fratricideeffectively prevented any deal. Gille Brigte's bad fortun e wascompounded later in the year, when Henry and William signed the Treatyof Falaise. Gill e Brigte was forced to come to terms with the twokings. In 1176, Gille Brigte travelled int o England, was fined 1000marks by Henry, and handed over his son Donnchad into Henry's custod yas a hostage to ensure good behaviour. The Lordship of Gille Brigte Gille Brigte's reign is characterized by a large degree of hostilitytowards the Scottish king s. Unlike his brother Uchtred, he was nofriend to incoming Normans. He maintained a Gaelic fo llowing. Such apolicy made him popular in the province, but alienated him from hisnominal Fra nco-Gaelic overlords, King Máel Coluim IV and then KingWilliam. William cultivated the loyalt y of Uchtred's son Lochlann(Roland), using him as a card in the game for control over theGalw egian lordship. In the 1180s, tension between Gille Brigte andWilliam was high, with Gilla Br igte being known to have made frequentraids into the Scottish controlled territory of easter n Galloway. WhenGille Brigte died in 1185, he was at war with William. Gille Brigte's timely death, with Donnchad still in Henry II'scustody, eased the way for Will iam to install Lochlann as GilleBrigte's successor.
