Notes:

Constantine Doukas From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Constantine Doukas or Ducas (Greek: ???sta?t???? ????a?, KonstantinosDoukas), (c. 1074?c. 109 5) was Byzantine co-emperor from c. 1075 to1078 and from 1081 to 1087. He was the son of Empe ror Michael VIIDoukas and his Georgian wife Maria of Alania. Constantine was porphyrogennetos, i.e., born in the purple, and wasassociated on the throne b y his father soon after his birth. He wasquickly involved in imperial diplomacy, as the infan t was betrothed toOlympias of Apulia, renamed Helena, the daughter of the Norman leaderRober t Guiscard and Sikelgaita. After his father was forced toabdicated in 1078, Constantine's mot her Maria married the new EmperorNikephoros III Botaneiates, but failed in convincing him t o recognizethe imperial status and succession rights of her son. Constantine'sdemotion also i nvolved the breaking off of the engagement to thedaughter of Robert Guiscard, who used this a s pretext to commencemilitary action against the Byzantine Empire. After the fall of Botaneites in 1081, Maria's intimacy (of whatevernature) with his successo r Alexios I Komnenos and the latter's policyof alliance with the Doukas family brought abou t Constantine'srestoration as co-emperor. His signature was appended to all officialdocument s issued by Alexios, and he accompanied the emperor on publicoccasions. When Anna Komnene, th e first child of Alexios I and IreneDoukaina was born, she was promptly betrothed to Constant ine, whichconfirmed his positions as heir. Maria's request, a noted philosopherTheophylakto s of Ohrid wrote a special treatise for the young prince?seducation. However, Constantine's position was undermined by his weakconstitution and, more immediately , by the birth of a son (the futureJohn II Komnenos) to Alexios I in 1087. Although now depri ved of hisstatus as co-emperor and imperial heir, Constantine retained theemperor's favor an d remained on good terms with him. Maria was forcedto retire to a monastery. During Alexios ' campaign against theSerbians in 1094 Constantine dined and entertained the emperor at hisow n expense. Later he refused to participate in a rebellion againstAlexios. Constantine apparen tly died in c. 1095.

Tancred was a son of Emma of Apulia. His maternal grandparents wereRobert Guiscard and his fi rst wife Alberada of Buonalbergo. Emma wasalso a sister of Bohemund of Taranto. In 1096, Tancred joined his maternal uncle Bohemund on the FirstCrusade, and the two made the ir way to Constantinople. There, he waspressured to swear an oath to Byzantine Emperor Alexiu s I Comnenus, promising to give back any conquered land to the Byzantine Empire.Although the o ther leaders did not intend to keep their oaths, Tancredrefused to swear the oath altogether. He participated in the siege of Nicaea in 1097, but the city was takenby Alexius' army afte r secret negotiations with the Seljuk Turks.Because of this Tancred was very distrustful of t he Byzantines. Laterin 1097 he captured Tarsus and other cities in Cilicia and assisted inth e siege of Antioch in 1098. In 1099, during the assault on Jerusalem, Tancred, along with GastonIV of Béarn, claimed to b e the first Crusader to enter the city onJuly 15. He and Gaston took hundreds of Muslim priso ners, providingprotection to some on the roof of the Temple. However, the followingmorning h e issued a command to the Crusaders to proceed to the Templeand kill the rest of the populati on that had been assembled there,Muslim and Jewish, both male and female. It may have been th at theWestern Europeans could not distinguish between the features of theArab and Jewish popu lace. When the Kingdom of Jerusalem wasestablished, Tancred became Prince of Galilee. In 1100 Tancred became regent of Antioch when Bohemund was takenprisoner by the Danishmends . He expanded the territory of thePrincipality by capturing land from the Byzantines, althoug h over thenext decade Alexius attempted, unsuccessfully, to bring him underByzantine control . In 1104 he also took control of the County ofEdessa when Baldwin II was taken captive afte r the Battle of Harran. After Baldwin's release in 1107 he had to fight Tancred to regaincontr ol of the county; Tancred was eventually defeated and returned toAntioch. In 1108 Tancred refused to honour the Treaty of Devol, in whichBohemund swore an oath of feal ty to Alexius and for decades afterwardsAntioch remained independent of the Byzantine Empire . In 1110 hebrought Krak des Chevaliers under his control, which would laterbecome an importa nt castle in the County of Tripoli. Tancred remainedregent in Antioch in the name of Bohemun d II until his death in 1112during a typhoid epidemic. Tancred in fiction Tancred appears as a character in Torquato Tasso's 16th-century poem,"Jerusalem Delivered", i n which he is portrayed as an epic hero andgiven a fictional love interest, the pagan warrior -maiden Clorinda. Heis also loved by the Princess Erminia of Antioch. Portions of Tasso'svers es were set by Claudio Monteverdi in his 1624 dramatic work, IlCombattimento di Tancredi e Cl orinda.

Alberada of Buonalbergo From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Alberada or Aubrey of Buonalbergo (Latin: Alverada, French: Aubrée)(c.1033?July 1122) was th e first wife of Robert Guiscard, duke ofApulia (1059?1085), whom she married in 1051 or 1052 , when he wasstill just a robber baron in Calabria. Alberada was the daughter of Lord Girard of Buonalbergo, who wantedthe support of the risin g Guiscard at that moment. As her dowry, shebrought Guiscard two hundred knights. She bore Gu iscard two children:a daughter, Emma, mother of Tancred, Prince of Galilee, and a son,Princ e Bohemond I of Antioch. In 1058, after Pope Nicholas IIstrengthened existing canon law again st consanguinity and on thatbasis, Guiscard repudiated Alberada in favour of a then-moreadvan tageous marriage to Sichelgaita, the sister of Prince Gisulf IIof Salerno. Nevertheless, th e split was amicable and Alberada showedno later ill will. She was alive at the death of Bohemond in March 1111 and died veryold, probably in July 112 2 or thereabouts. She was buried in theHauteville family mausoleum in Venosa, where her tom b is the only oneto come down to us intact. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberada_of_Buonalbergo"

Robert I of Loritello From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Robert I (d.1107) was the eldest son of Geoffrey of Hauteville, one ofthe elder sons of Tancr ed of Hauteville. He was the first count ofLoritello (primo comiti de Loritello) in 1061. Like his father, he began his military conquests in the Abruzzi, encroaching on lands held o f the Roman pontiff. He advanced as far asOrtona in 1070, a year before his father's death. U nsurprisingly, hewas excommunicated (February 1075). Pope Gregory VII speaks of his"Godless i nsolence." Where Duke Robert Guiscard and Prince Richard ofCapua had failed to expand northwa rds, Robert of Loritello andRichard's son Jordan had success. By 1075, Robert was making hi s seatat Chieti. While Jordan advanced in the district around Lake Fucino,Robert advanced u p the Adriatic littoral. He made his brother Drogocount of Chieti (or Teate). In 1076, Orton a finally fell with theassistance of troops from Robert Guiscard. The local Lombard nobility, as far as the Pescara, did homage to him. He had five hundred knightsunder his command. In re turn for his uncle's help, he sent acontingent of his own men to assist in the defeat of hi s cousinAbelard in Sant'Agata di Puglia. In June 1080, Gregory VII recognised the Norman conquests of Robertand Jordan up to Fermo. I n June 1083, besieged in the CastelSant'Angelo by the Emperor Henry IV, the pope begged the a ssistance ofthe duke. The two Roberts, uncle and nephew, came to his rescue.Robert took par t in the second Byzantine expedition of his uncle's in1084-1085. He was at the Guiscard's dea thbed and remained loyal to hisuncle's chosen heir, Roger Borsa, whose guardian he had been. He continued his conquests and before his death had made it beyond theFortore and as far as t he Tronto. He ruled from Bovino (conquered1100) to Ascoli Piceno. He may have even ruled Drag onara. By the endof his life, he had taken the titles comes Dei gratia (count by thegrace o f God) and comes comitorum (count of counts). He was succeededby his son, Robert II of Lorite llo. Notes:

Tancred of Sicily From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tancred (died February 20, 1194), was King of Sicily from 1189 to1194. He was an illegitimat e son of Roger III, Duke of Apulia, theeldest son of King Roger II, and of Emma, daughter o f Achard II, Countof Lecce. He inherited the title "Count of Lecce" from hisgrandfather, an d is consequently often referred to as Tancred ofLecce. As soon as William II died, in 1189, Tancred rebelled and seizedcontrol of the island, and h e was crowned as King Tancred I of Sicilyearly in 1190. His coup was backed by the chancello r Matthew d'Ajelloand the official class, while the rival claims of Roger II's daughterConsta nce and her husband, Henry VI, King of the Romans, weresupported by most of the nobles. Tancred was a good soldier, though his tiny stature earned him thenickname "Tancredulus" fro m the poet chronicler Peter of Eboli.Despite a measure of popular support, his rule faced dau ntingchallenges right from the start. In 1190 Richard I of England arrivedin Sicily at the he ad of a large crusading army on its way to the HolyLand. Richard immediately demanded the rel ease of his sister, WilliamII's Queen Joan, imprisoned by Tancred in 1189, along with every p ennyof her dowry and inheritance. He also insisted that Tancred fulfil thefinancial commitmen ts made by William II to the crusade. When Tancredbalked at these demands, Richard seized a m onastery and the castle ofLa Bagnara. Richard was joined in Sicily by the French crusading army, led by KingPhilip II. The presenc e of two foreign armies soon caused unrest amongthe locals. In October the people of Messin a revolted, demanding thatthe foreigners leave the island. Richard responded by attackingMess ina, which he captured on October 4, 1190. After the city had beenlooted and burned, Richar d established his base there and decided tostay the winter. He remained at Messina until March 1191, when Tancred finally agreedto a treaty. According t o the treaty's main terms: Joan was to be released, receiving her inheritance along with thedowry her father had given t o the deceased William. Richard and Philip recognised Tancred as legal King of Sicily andvowed to keep the peace betw een all three of their kingdoms. Richard officially proclaimed his nephew Arthur of Brittany, son ofGeoffrey, as his heir, an d Tancred promised to marry one of hisdaughters to Arthur when he came of age (Arthur was fou r years old atthe time). After signing the treaty Richard and Philip finally left Sicily forthe Holy Land. Having at last rid himself of the crusaders, Tancred next confrontedthe threat from the north . In April 1191 in Rome, Henry and Constancewere crowned Emperor and Empress by Pope Celestin e III, and now thepair turned south to claim the Kingdom of Sicily in the name ofConstance, w ho was the posthumous daughter of Roger II of Sicily byhis third wife Beatrice of Rethel an d therefore the legitimate heiressto the throne. Constance accompanied her husband at the head of a substantialimperial army that descended in to the Regno. The northern towns of thekingdom opened their gates to Henry, including the ear liest Normanstrongholds Capua and Aversa. Salerno, once Roger II's mainlandcapital, sent wor d ahead that Henry was welcome and invited Constanceto stay in her father's old palace to esc ape the summer heat. Naplesoffered the first resistance of the whole campaign, withstanding a siege with the help of Margaritus of Brindisi's fleet, until much ofthe army had succumbed t o malaria and disease. Eventually the imperialarmy was forced to withdraw from the kingdom al together. Constanceremained in Salerno with a small garrison, as a sign that Henry wouldsoo n return. Once Henry had withdrawn with the bulk of the imperial army, the townsthat had supposedly fal len to the empire immediately declared theirallegiance to Tancred, for the most part now fear ing his retribution. The populace of Salerno saw an opportunity to win some favour withTancre d and delivered Constance to him in Messina, an important prizegiven that Henry had every int ention of returning. However, Tancredwas willing to give up his negotiation advantage, that i s, theempress, in exchange for Pope Celestine III legitimising him as Kingof Sicily. In turn , the Pope was hoping that by securing Constance'ssafe passage back to Rome, Henry would be b etter disposed towards thepapacy, and he was still hoping to keep the empire and the kingdomf rom uniting. However, imperial soldiers were able to intervene beforeConstance made it to Rom e, and they returned her safely across theAlps. Henry had left garrisons along the frontiers of the Regno. Tancred nowsought to win over th e towns by extensive grants of privileges. AtGravina (June 1192) he reinforced his papal supp ort by surrenderingthe royal legateship over Sicily. In 1192 and 1193 he personally ledsucces sful campaigns against the Apulian barons. But his death, atPalermo (February 20, 1194), a fe w days after that of his his youngson and co-king, Roger III, opened the way for Hohenstaufe n rule inSicily. His wife Sibylla of Acerra did establish a regency for her second sonWilliam III, but Henry V I returned to Italy later that year, his armyfinanced by the lucrative ransom of Richard I. N aples surrendered inMay, almost without a blow, and the rest of the Regno followed.Sybilla an d the loyal Margaritus prepared to defend Palermo, but thecitizens admitted the emperor on No vember 20, 1194. Tancred's familyfell into Henry's hands, and William III, rumoured castrate d andblinded, seems to have died in Germany in 1198, the last of the Normankings of Sicily.

Notes:

Second Crusade In 1144 the Crusader state of Edessa was besieged in a border war thatthreatened its survival . Queen Melisende responded by sending an armyled by constable Manasses of Hierges, Philip o f Milly, and Elinand ofBures. Raymond of Antioch ignored the call for help, as his army wasal ready occupied against the Byzantine Empire in Cilicia. DespiteMelisende's army, Edessa fell. Melisende sent word to the Pope in Rome, and the west called for aSecond Crusade. The crusade r expedition was led by French King Louisand the German Emperor Conrad II. Accompanying Loui s was his wifeEleanor of Aquitaine, with her own vassal lords in tow. Eleanor hadherself bee n designated by her father, William IX, to succeed him inher own right, just as Melisende ha d been designated to succeed herfather. During the Crusader meeting in Acre in 1148 the battle strategy wasplanned. Conrad and Loui s advised 16-year old Baldwin III to attackthe Muslim city-state of Damascus, though Melisend e, Manasses, andEleanor wanted to take Aleppo, which would aid them in retakingEdessa. The me eting ended with Damascus as their target. Damascus andJerusalem were on very good diplomati c terms and there was a peacetreaty between them. The result of this breach of treaty was tha tDamascus would never trust the Crusader states again, and the loss ofa sympathetic Muslim st ate was a blow from which later monarchs ofJerusalem could not recover. After 11 months Elean or and Louisdeparted for France, ending the Second Crusade.
