Immediately after his accession t o the throne he deprived his idolatrous grandmother Maachah of the title of Queen Mother (2 C hr. 15:16-18). He devoted his life to destroying idols and restoring the worship of God. . The first ten years of his reign were peaceful and he fortified Judah's cities. Albright has dated the reign of Jehoshaphat to 873 BC-849 BC,while E. R. Thiele of fers the dates 870 BC-848 BC. ' Jehoshaphat spent his first regnal years fortifying his kingdom againstIsrael (2 Chronicles 1 7:1, 2), and destroying the cult images or "idols"of Baal in the land (1 Kings 22:43). In th e third year of his reign hesent out priests and Levites over the land to instruct the peopl e in theLaw (2 Chr. 17:7-9). The author of 2 Chronicles generally praises hisreign, stating t hat the kingdom enjoyed a great measure of peace andprosperity, the blessing of God resting o n the people "in their basketand their store."
