Ruled 0521 - 0486 BC Darius' Memorial The ruler who succeeded Cambyses II was the able Darius I (521-485 BC). Camb yses left no heirs, and Darius, one of his generals, fought his way to sovereignty against ma ny rivals. Darius governed the land wisely, and, for the most part, peacefully. He establishe d postal routes everywhere and a postal service. He had officers of justice in every land , a police force, and a regular system of taxation. He was also a great builder and the found er of the Persian capital Persepolis. His tomb near that city and shown here is probably th e most impressive monument remaining from that time. Darius founded the line of Persian emper ors who ruled Persian until its conquest by Alexander the Great. Greece Meets Carthage Like Solomon in consultation with Hiram must have planted trading post s in the harbors his fleet visited, so the Phoenicians planted new towns on the shores of th e Mediterranean like Sicily and North Africa, and perhaps even further away. The rising natio n of Greece did the same and so in about 500 BC the two peoples clashed. A Greek historian te lls us that his countrymen in Sicily attacked a huge invading force of 300,000 Carthaginians . The first contest was indecisive. Then the Greeks prepared a strategy. A band of them prete nded to be traitors and so secured admission among the enemy. The Carthaginians held a religi ous ceremony to pledge faith with these supposed allies, and in the midst of it the little Gr eek band turned with sudden slaughter on their entertainers. The outside army of the Greeks a ttacked at the same moment, and the whole host of Carthage was put to flight. The story of wh at followed is as tragic as that of the battle. The Carthaginian ships were destroyed, so tha t the masses of fugitives could not escape from the island of Sicily, and were driven to fle e from mountain to mountain in the barren interior of the island. They perish by thousands fr om the sword and starvation. They entreated the Greeks to take them as slaves, and so numerou s were these slaves that they could scarcely be fed and were threatened like cattle. This Gre ek story of triumph is doubtless exaggerated; for Carthage continued to divide with Greece th e control of Sicily, and in the course of a couple of centuries conquered the entire island a nd expelled the Greeks. Xerxes scourges the sea The reign of Darius had been mainly peaceful. Just at its close one o f his generals was defeated by the Greeks of Athens at Marathon. This battle, which meant s o much to Europe, seemed very unimportant to the Persians; it was a mere frontier reverse o f a small force. Darius was, however, succeeded by his son Xerxes (485-465 BC), under whom th e war with Greece was carried to a disastrous climax. BD DARIUS (2) The son of Hystaspes and founder of the Persian dynasty (Ezra 4: 5, 24; Ezra 5: 5-7; Ezr a 6: 1-15; Hag. 1: 1, 15; Hag. 2: 10; Zech. 1: 1, 7; Zech. 7: 1). DARIUS 1ST. ALSO KNOWN AS DARIUS HYSTAPES, OR DARIUS THE GREAT. B.C. 521-486. Darius Hystape s was a Persian officer of the same Archaemenian family as Cyrus by a collateral royal line ; within a few months he had subdued the revolt throughout the Persian empire, by violent mea ns. Within two months Darius had killed Gaumata, the Pseudo Smerdis. The Median rebel Fravart ish (Phraortes), was put on public exhibition after having his nose, ears and tongue cut off , and his eyes gouged out, and then finally impaled. Within two years Darius had defeated nin e kings in nineteen battles, and had secured his throne and had consolidated the empire. I n B.C. 520, the foundation of the Temple was laid. Haggai.2v18. The Persian governor of Weste rn Euphrates, Tattenai, challenged the right of the Jews to rebuild their Temple, after the y had been encouraged to build by Haggai and Zechariah. Ezra.5v1-3. The Jews appealed to Dari us, and stated that Cyrus had given Sheshbazzar (Zerubbabel) a written decree to build the Te mple. The work on the Temple continued while this decree was searched for in the library at E cbatana. Ezra.6v2. Darius, recognising in some measure Jehovah's person and power, then mad e his own decree and commanded Tattenai to provided financial aid to build the Temple from th e income from the tribute from the western provinces. Ezra.6v6-12. With this material aid, an d prophetic spiritual encouragement (Zech.7v1 to 8v23.), in the fourth year of Darius, B.C. 5 18, the Temple was rapidly rebuilt and finished in the sixth year of Darius, in either Februa ry or March of 516 or 515 B.C. Ezra.6v15. The haste of Tattenai to obey the decree of Dariu s is explained by the execution of 3,000 of the leading citizens of Babylon about a year befo re this decree. Many Babylonians had followed a usurper, who claimed the title of Nebuchadnez zar 4th., and took over Babylon. It took a long siege to recapture Babylon; the crucifixion o f 3,000 of its leading citizens served as a terrifying warning to submit to and obey Darius . Ezra.6v11-13. The opponents of the Jews knew that their death was just as sure and certai n if they disobeyed the decree of Darius to aid in the rebuilding of the Temple. (http://www .thesecretofeternallife.com/second_comingd.html) Darius I Darius I (Darius the Great) [dr´s] d. 486 B.C., king of ancient Persia (521-486 B.C.), calle d also Dariavaush and Darius Hystaspis (after his father, Hystaspes or Vishtaspa). A distan t cousin of Cambyses II (see under Cambyses), he succeeded to the throne after the fall of th e impostor claiming to be Smerdis. The first years of his reign were spent in putting down re volts in Persia, Media, Babylonia, and the East. He then proved himself the true successor o f Cyrus the Great and one of the most able of the Achaemenids by revising and increasing Cyru s' use of the satrapies. These provinces were ruled by satraps, who functioned as viceroys an d were responsible only to the Great King; the satraps were, however, checked by generals, mi nisters of home affairs, and secret police, all of whom were responsible to Darius alone. Thi s system proved so efficient that it was later adopted by Alexander the Great and, still late r, by the Parthians. Darius also undertook lengthy campaigns; an incursion against the Scythi ans began in 512 B.C., and it involved taking Thrace and Macedonia and building a bridge acro ss the Danube. He was involved in a dispute with the Greeks after giving refuge to the tyran t Hippias, but more serious quarrels began with the revolt (c.500 B.C.) of the Ionian citie s against Persian rule. Having put down the rebels, Darius set out to punish the Greek city-s tates that had aided in the insurrection (see Persian Wars). His first expedition was turne d back by storms; his second met defeat in the memorable battle of Marathon (490 B.C.). Dariu s consolidated Persian power in the East, including NW India. He continued Cyrus' policy of r estoring the Jewish state, and under his auspices the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem w as completed in 515 B.C. For this reason he is mentioned warmly in Ezra, Haggai, and Zecharia h. He left the Behistun Inscription. Written in Old Persian, Assyrian, and Susian (the Irania n language of Elam), it provided the key for deciphering Babylonian cuneiform. Upon his deat h he was succeeded by his son Xerxes I. Ionia had revolted and Athens came to their aid. Darius, intent upon revenge, lost his fle et to weather at Athos. On a second attempt, he lost his fleet at the Battle of Marathon, an d retired to Persia. Darius died before the third attempt, although Greece lived under threa t of invasion for many years. Darius was also an absentee Pharaoh of Egypt, of the 27th Dynasty, using the throne name of S etut-re. Darius was known as a good ruler, and appears in the Bible as the Darius who raise d Daniel to high office. This ruler is also known for completing the canal, begun by Necho, b etween the Nile at Pelusium and the Red Sea, now known as the Suez Canal. There were several opinio ns, but most voted for a king. 6 decided to select the king from among themselves. The 7th, O tanes, did not want to rule or be ruled. It was agreed that he would not be allowed to be kin g, but that he and his descendents would not be bound to follow any decree of whoever becam e king. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Meresankh Meresankh was the heiress-daughter of Hetepheres II & Crown Prince Kawab, children of Khufw y & Merityetes II. When renegade Hetepheres was finally done with her antics, she'd managed t o disinherit all of her immediate family from the line of succession. Meresankh was left i n a very awkward situation. It became up to her mother to finally make peace with the new kin g (usurper) and wed her daughter to him. The marriage appears to have been a happy one. Meresankh became second wife, although continu ing to assert her claims by her title "king's daughter" and "beholder of the horus and seth" . As her father died before ascending the throne she was never a king's daughter, but a king' s granddaughter. By Rekhaef she had more than six children. Some of their names were: Nebema khet (m), Shepsetkau (f), Dwa're (m), Niuserre (m), and Khenterka (m), besides several unname d daughters. She was also not content to remain in the background. Both her and her mother became prominen t at court, on sculptures and inscriptions. Her eldest son would eventually become superior l ector priest and vizier. While there is no proof for this hypothesis, her eldest daughter ma y have (if tradiition was followed) married Menkaure, as she would've been the next heiress.H er son eventually married and had children of his own. Technically, he was heir to the thron e - as was his children. They would never again be in line for the throne. They had grandma t o thank for that
