Cmdr. & Dr. William "Bill" Warner Anderson
b. 21 Mar 1938 - d. 31 Mar 2016

POQUOSON - Sailor, scholar, professor, family man,
and gentleman, Bill Anderson died March 31, 2016. Born March 21, 1938,
to Van Buren and Ann Stacy Anderson in Baltimore, MD, Bill grew up
in Poquoson. A 1971 doctoral graduate of UVA, he taught literacy education
for 30 years at Shippensburg Univ., UVA, and Nova Southeastern Univ.
With twenty-three years of active and reserve Navy service, he served
on destroyer USS BORIE during 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and retired
as Commander in 1998. Bill had an upbeat, joyful spirit, a love of
learning and language, especially stories, puns, and jokes. A kind,
courageous man, a champion of the underdog, he had a passion for peace,
justice, and equality. He endeared himself to others. Bill is survived
by his wife, Ann Fordham; daughter, Kathleen Zimmerman; sons, William
Jr., Douglas, and James Anderson, and Benjamin and Andrew Fordham;
eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, John F. Hunt
III, Gerald L. Hunt, Carol Derby, Van Smith, and Debra Sterling; and
many nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceasing him were his parents,
step-father, Dr. John F. Hunt Jr., & sister, Leslie Hunt. Bill
had memberships in Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Poquoson,
and First United Church of Christ in Hampton. Visitation will be Saturday,
April 16th, 10:30-11:30 AM, with the Memorial Service at 11:30 AM
at First United Church of Christ by Rev. Lisa Gaul. A reception will
follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to either
church. Condolences to claytorrollins.com . Claytor Rollins Funeral
Home, Poquoson, is assisting. "Appreciation to his personal aides
and York Convalescent Center for their compassionate care."

John, Thanks for the message about the Edwards family. I can send you some information on my father and the Edwards family. Even though he died when I was very young, I do know a lot about him and the Edwards family. I don't have his death certificate and expect it burned in the fire we had in 1956. He is buried in Apopka, Florida, in the Edwards family plot. His brother David is buried there and so are his parents and little brother Willie. I try to visit it if possible when I go to Florida. He was called Stewart. This is what I copied off the tomb stones in Apopka: William Edwards: (my grandfather) Nov. 29, 1869 - July 4, 1934 and his wife (my grandmother) Isobel T. Edwards - May 31, 1875 - June 28, 1939, James Stewart Edwards, March 8, 1898 - March 19, 1940 (my father). Next time I go there I will get the dates of the other family members. I know there is a small boy "Wee Willie" and David, both sons of William and Isobel. With warm regards, Ann |

J, I just spent a few days with my Uncle David Stewart Edwards. He came to help me with genealogy. All he could add to what you and I have was photographs and a few stories. I will try to send you a few photographs. (Only of David Stewart Edwards - James' Brother) I also don't know anything about James except that he married a woman named Blanche. There were no children from that marriage. Then he married your Aunt Ruth Hoyt next. I am in touch with my Aunt Nancy Jean Edwards-Mabry who currently lives in Lakeland, Florida. She seems to know more than anyone, but it is taking me some time to pull these stories out of her. She grew up in Orlando. They used to hang out at Errol Estate as children, where William Edwards used to run that place. Nancy says William and another fellow had a bank note together. The note came due, and somehow the other fellow couldn't pay so William got stuck with all of it. Apparently that's why they moved to Zellwood. James and David lived there but Nancy was quite sure Margaret Jean had moved away. The new place in Zellwood (still nice) eventually burned down. Do you know about these stories? Nancy eluded to some family dissension. Not sure what that was all about. Scanning what I have - I think it's the same as you. I'm mainly interested in going further than William and Isabelle - on to Scotland research. Thanks to you I have a starting place now. Keep in touch. Let me know if these don't send. L. Graham |
