Notes:

Source: The Stamford Historian ? Volume I, Number I, March 1954: Schuyler Merritt By Lisetta Neukam Higgins This issue of the Stamford Historian is dedicated to Schuyler Merritt.Accordingly, it is fitt ing that we present a brief biography of Mr.Merritt. He had such a full life, and engaged i n so many activities thatit is difficult to be brief and encyclopedic at the same time. He wa s along-time member of the Stamford Historical Society, and in 1947 waselected Honorary Presi dent. His death, in his 100th year, was a greatloss to the Society and to the community at la rge. Men may come and men may go, but likely no Stamford citizen, past, present or future will eve r surpass the myriad facets which scintilate inthe life story of the late Schuyler Merritt--c ongressman, lawyer, industrialist, banker, an outstanding Christian, civic leader andenthusias tic chairman of the commission of the Merritt Parkway--named inhis honor. Those facets shine and penetrate practically every phase of Stamfordlife. They send beams thr oughout Connecticut, reach into his nativestate, New York, and thence on to the nation's capi tal and achieveinternational influence during his long years in Congress, where heserved on t he Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee. Schuyler Merritt loved people and they loved him. Because he had faith inmankind, folks had f aith in him. Because of this combination plus hiskeen analysis of problems, local, state an d national and his ability tounderstand the other fellow's point of view, Schuyler Merritt' s influencewill live as long as there is a Stamford. He was an example of what trueChristiani ty creates in a man and what that man can do when he lives hisfaith. He was born in New York City at Fifth Avenue and Twenty-first streetDecember 16, 1853. He die d April 1, 1953, eight months before his 100thbirthday. At the age of two, his parents, Matth ew F. and Maria ShawMerritt, brought him to Stamford. They made their home on the broadtree-s haded Atlantic street on the site now occupied by Albrecht's, theFederal Bakery and several o ther business establishments. He lived thereuntil his marriage when he moved to Bedford stree t, almost opposite theBetsy Barnum house, now the Stamford Historical Societyheadquarters--?T he Little Red House on Bedford Street.? Matthew Merritt was a prominent figure in social and political life. Hehelped establish the F irst National Bank and was one of early members ofthe Republican party in Connecticut. Young Schuyler was graduated from a private school in Stamford, 1869, andfrom Yale Universit y in 1873. In 1876 he received his LLB from ColumbiaUniversity law school. In 1935 his alma m ater, Yale, conferred on him thehonorary degree of LLD. When he was 90 years old, he attende d his 70thclass reunion. His was the honor of being the oldest Yale alumnus at thetime of hi s death. For seventy years he was associated with Stamford's most importantindustry, Yale & Towne Manu facturing company. He began in a legalcapacity in 1877. In 1878 he was elected secretary. Lat er he was named amember of the board of directors and became successively general manager, tre asurer, vice president and chairman of the board of directors. Heresigned from the board seve ral years before his death. How Mr. Merritt's personality lives through the years because of ?littlethings? as well as im portant ones, is graphically shown in the words of aStamford woman now in her seventies. Sh e said, ?Schuyler Merritt was awonderful man, much loved by all. I'll never forget the firs t time I methim. I was just a high school girl. My Mother took me to the StamfordNational Ban k. As we entered Mr. Merritt greeted us with a smile. Motherintroduced us. President Merrit t bowed graciously and took my hand andcourteously welcomed us. Through the years, no matte r how busy he mightbe, he always remembered me and bowed and smiled in that charming mannera s he did to others. He was truly a gracious, Christian gentleman. Ialways cherish the memor y that it was he, who made our commencementaddress at Stamford High School now Burdick Junio r High School. Hepresented our diplomas. It made us extra proud for he had done so much tomak e that high school a reality. He was an inspiration to all who knewhim. Likely many of us bec ame better citizens because of thatcommencement address, which he gave from his heart to ou r class. We felthis sincerity, his fine character. He was a really wonderful man. No onecan s ay too many fine things about him.? At 90 he went daily to his office in the First Stamford National Bank andTrust Company wher e he served as director and chairman of the board ofdirectors. His banking career began in 1902 when he was first elected an officer ofthe Stamford Nationa l Bank. In 1905 he was elected president. When theStamford National Bank and the First Nation al Bank merged under the nameof the First Stamford National Bank in 1919 Mr. Merritt was elec ted thefirst president. He served two years and then became chairman of theboard of directors . He was honorary chairman at the time of his death. From 1916, when he helped nominate Charles Evans Hughes for president ofthe United States o n the Republican ticket, Schuyler Merritt wasnationally in the news. Originally he agreed t o run for Congress as a waremergency at a special election in 1917 to succeed Ebenezer J. Hil l ofNorwalk, who died in office. For seven successive terms he wasre-elected. Then in 1930 h e was defeated by a Democrat, William L.Tierney of Greenwich. But two years later Mr. Merrit t was the onlyRepublican elected to Congress running against a Democratic incumbent inthe Roo sevelt landslide. Congressman Merritt served in Congress underfive presidents, Woodrow Wilson , Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, HerbertHoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. For 20 year s his constituentsreturned him to Washington. Finally in 1938 at 83, Congressman Merrittagree d to permit his name to appear on the ticket on condition that hemake no campaign. His phenom inal record during the Roosevelt landslidemade his party overconfident and Alfred N. Philips , who campaignedvigorously on the Democratic ticket, was elected. During the score of years he served in Congress, besides his activitiesas a member of the Int erstate and Foreign Commerce committee, he made hisinfluence felt in major legislation. He vo ted for tax reduction, farmrelief, tariff and immigration restriction. His ardent campaign wo rkfostering legislation to protect United States industries wasoutstanding. During World Wa r II when discussing tariff and protection ofAmerican business, Mr. Merritt said that durin g post-war planning itmight be that free trade possibly would be established in a gradual way ,although he still believed in protecting American interests in everypossible way. Two outstanding services Schuyler Merritt contributed to his State wereserving on the constit utional committee when he helped re-write theConnecticut State Constitution when he was 51, a nd his service on theMerritt Parkway. Retired to private life he gave his talent to many activities, but servedas Chairman of the C ommission supervising the construction ofConnecticut's famous multi-million dollar Merritt Pa rkway named to honorhim. Only one other Connecticut man, former Governor Wilbur M. Cross, eve r had a state parkway named for him. Mr. Merritt lived to see thefirst stretch of this parkwa y, reaching from New York's Westchestercounty to the Housatonic river, completed. His Stamford activities were legion. Among them he spent many yearsdirecting Ferguson Librar y activities, when he served as president of theboard of directors. As a member of the schoo l committee for 15 years(most of the time as chairman) he was instrumental in developing Stam fordHigh School and in raising the standards of the grade schools. In 1910 hebecame a membe r of the State Board of Education, serving for seven years,or until he left for Congressiona l service in 1917. For many years heserved on the Stamford Board of Appropriations and Apport ionments. He helped organize the Stamford Board of Trade, the parent of theStamford Chamber of Commerce . For many years he was honorary chairman ofthe Stamford Community Chest, president of the St amford Children's Homeand served as a member of the Board of the Family Welfare Society, andw as a generous member of the Red Cross. To him fell the task of preparingappeals to the publi c for emergency funds when National Red Crossheadquarters assigned Stamford's chapter quota . Many will remember hiseloquent appeals in print and vocally for the Japanese earthquakerefu gees, the Mississippi flood and other national emergencies. Of all Mr. Merritt's activities, perhaps the one closest to his heart andappreciated by man y persons, was his long cherished years of service aswarden and vestryman at St. John's Episc opal church to which his parentsbelonged and where they took him in his formative years. On e St. John'sparish member of long standing when speaking of his vestry service, said,?I can s ee him going down the church aisle Sundays. He was such ahandsome man, his smile, that kind w onderful smile and his beautiful blueeyes and gracious manner live long in our memories. He h ad twinkling blueeyes and imagine he never wore glasses even in his 90th year, except forread ing. Oh, Schuyler Merritt was a darling--and our first citizen.? His church influence was felt not only in St. John's church but also inthe formative years o f Emmanuel Episcopal church, Springdale, which was amission of St. John's for 75 years. Thu s it was under the guidance of St.John's vestry during many of the years Mr. Merritt served s o unselfishly. A distinguished, though seldom mentioned activity, was his importantconnection with the Gas a nd Electric Company, which he served as vicepresident, when it meant much to the developmen t of Stamford's place inthe industrial world. His great love of outdoors and the fact he did not smoke may be thesecret of his long, health y, useful life. For many years daily beforebreakfast he rode horseback with Henry R. Towne o n mounts he selectedfrom his own stables at his home on Noroton Hill, where the Merrittsmove d when they left the Bedford street home. He was also an ardentyachtsman and enjoyed yachtin g with Mrs. Merritt's brother, Fred Hoyt, anoted yachtsman. Mr. Merritt's best known boat wa s ?The Kathleen.? Golfhowever was his favorite outdoor activity. At 90 he still played when a thome or during the winter at Lake Wales, Florida. He also enjoyed hisrose and vegetable gard ens, especially in his retirement years. He was married October 2, 1879 to the former Miss Frances Hoyt of an oldStamford family. The y had two daughters, Mrs. William B. Dalton (Louise)of Ocean Drive, East, Shippan Point and D r. Katharine Krom Merritt, pediatrician at Babies' Hospital, New York, who both followed their famous father's footsteps, serving humanity in many ways. Mrs. Merrittdied August 2, 1943. Besides creating the many facets in his life affecting humanity, SchuylerMerritt found time , energy and desire to belong to many organizations, among them: The Suburban Club, Woodway Co untry Club, Wee Burn Golf Club,Stamford Historical Society locally, and to The University Clu b of NewYork, The Yale Club of New York and Yale Alumni Association and ChevyChase, Washingto n, D.C., and a golf club in Lake Wales, Florida. Truly one can say in closing, as in beginning this story of the life ofSchuyler Merritt, ?me n may come and men may go? but, where can one findsuch a man, who served so graciously, so lo ng so faithfully and whoreceived so much of love and honor in his home town?
