"Aunt" Betty (Olson) Johnson, Turns 101, March 2010

From: Jacqueline & George Saito
To: Elaine Benoite ; John E Hoyt ; Linda Hoyt ; Reine Laschen
Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2010 8:59 PM

Hi Everybody,
Isn't this something! Last Thurs (3-18) we surprised Aunt Betty -- 10 of us including Betty's daughter, Vicky and her granddaughter - Shannon, nieces -Shirley and Jackie and George too, great niece - Sonia, and a nephew - Wayne and his wife Mary Ann. Betty's daughter, Shar, ret'd. ill from FL day before, so George and I picked up Betty, and took her to a nice little restaurant nr. her home in Plymouth - The Cozy Cafe. As we were seated the family arrived and she was so happy to see all. She was one big smiler from beginning to end.

The food was very good and the ambience perfect - it is a very cozy place. We had a waiter/chef who was doing stand-up while taking and delivering our orders - and pretty funny. We were all just stuffed with boxes of the overflow to take home. Shar forgot to order a birthday cake, so I ordered a large piece of their famous lemon meringue pie (Betty's favorite.) We sang "Happy Birthday" and after Betty had a bite, she passed it around table for all to have a bite. We all liked this lots (lemon meringue is my fave too.) Just before leaving, Shar came in from her Dr.'s appt. and Betty was so happy to see her.

George and I took her home where she opened her gifts and cards (too busy visiting at lunch.) Then I went through and read - with her - so many beautiful birthday cards from her children, grandkids, and great grandkids that had arrived in the mail. I think she really enjoyed her VERY BIG DAY - and so did we. She is truly amazing, still keeping her little apt. clean, cooking her meals. She has given up crocheting and letter writing pretty much. The concentration is a struggle. Her attitude tho is so positive, and her sense of humor is definitely working just fine. She is looking forward to a walk along the creek in back of her apt. bldg. it's quite scenic, and she will use her walker. But there is a sense of weariness in her, and no wonder 101years is a very long time. I hope she remembers how many of us love her, as her memory dims.
Love to you all, Jackie

Dear John,
So sorry to see the mill pictures. Seeing important parts of our Hoyt History go down is really hard -- and especially for you who grew up so close by - my sympathy going out to you and your families.
I think I'm back in this time zone - but it takes awhile. We ret'd. from AZ Tues 3 am. The wedding was wonderful, as was weather. It took place at a lovely resort in Paradise Valley - outdoors for the ceremony and indoors for the festivities. Blaire was a lovely bride and looked radiant. Jenifer came down from CA so we had another "reunion" this year - lucky us! Her real birthday is Wed - 3-18. Today was picked to accomodate out of towners. Her daughter, Pat, is here from W. VA. Only cousins Harold and wife Kathy, and cousin, Tim are coming from TC area. All the rest are reluctant to plan long drives at this time of yr. They could have a good, dry trip one way, then
run into all kinds of problems on return - or vice versa. Even cousins from Troy, Royal Oak, and Owasso are doubtful - illness, out of town. Hope to bring them together at a small place nr Betty's on Wed for lunch.
This is a sr. residence comprised of small apartments, she has been there a number of years, but very well kept up, and within walking distance of dntn Plymouth. She is happy there and keeps her place up so well.

She is my teacher for Sr. Citizens #101 - How to be a Nice Old Lady.
Love,
Jackie and George

Email #2:
Sent: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 8:27 PM
Subject: Re: "QUEEN"
Hi John,
We've been partying with the party"Queen" again today, so time to "e" reply - "yes" go ahead and post Queen Betty's pic on the Family website.
Today was a more impromptu party. George and I told her we'd like to take her to lunch on her real birthday - today. We suggested her favorite Coney Island restaurant in Plymouth. Then I e-mailed cousins (who live in Detroit area) who couldn't make it last Sat. - This was a surprise - but a;ll showed up, her daughter, Shar, knew about it, so she had kids and grandkids there too - didn't count but there was a gang and we took over backroom seating area in restaurant.
Betty was delighted to see all and enjoyed every minute, eating what she always eats: broccoli omelet and whole wheat toast. So many cameras clicking away so more pics. All the restaurant staff came back to sing Happy Birthday. And the birthday cake was really creative. Cook put together a lot of little pancakes that formed the base. Next a cherry topping, then sparkly candles. Betty blew out the three candles and a glow hung over the people and place and especially Betty.
Party #3 took place at the Kroger store across the way from the restaurant. She has shopped there - with Shar's help - these past 6-7 yrs. She knows many of the store's employees. So when Shar ordered her birthday cake (for Sat. party) the manager got involved. Kroger party followed Coney Island's. The manager met all of us at the front door - and del'd a huge bunch of helium balloons (well anchored) a large arrangement of flowers - and made a little speech over the PA system, telling customers about Betty's birthday. So as they checked out, so many came to Betty's Bench and wished her Happy Birthday. One little girl gave Betty a Snickers Bar and
another customer gave her a bouquet of yellow flowers. Then out came the Birthday Cake - and so many employees, family, and customers all sang Happy Birthday to Betty. She was so sweet and gracious throughout - and seemed to enjoy it all. We drove her home afterward, and saw the stack of birthday cards she'd already received in the mail and that neighbors and friends in her bldg. had fastened to her apt. door.

She is a much loved lady.So dear Aunt Betty has had quite a day, and how wonderful it was to share it with her. At her Sat. party, I told her, "Aunt Betty I have never known anyone who was 100 yrs. old." She replied, " I haven't either." So ends her first 100 years.
Amazing! Wish you could've been there - she is so delightful to be with - indeed our family Crown Jewel. Oh -
we taught her the Queen Elizabeth wave - and she got very good at it while wearing her crown on Sat. Lucky me, I have a wonderful role model - now if I can only get that nice and sweet.
With love,
Jackie

Aunt" Betty (Olson) Johnson Turns 100

Email #1: (edited)
Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 11:11 AM
Subject: Re: Happy 100th Birthday to "Aunt" Betty Olson Johnson
Dear John,
So sorry to see the mill pictures.

With love,
Jackie
