Notes:

DEATH: Hoyt History, pg. 46 IN MEMORIAM Died: At Streeter hospital, Chicago, July 2. 1903, Mrs. Roxanna W. Clark. Are 87 years. Born in the east and having spent her early life in Philadephia and NewYork, Mrs. Clark cam e in 1836 with her husband, the late Deacon I. W.Clark to this place, which with the exceptio n of a half dozen houses, existed only on paper and in the imagination of its founders. What such renunciations meant to a person of culture and refinerment onlythese who have pract iced it may know. With a courage born of love sheassumed the burdens and bore the privation s of pioneer life. If wearinessand discouragement over the rude surroundings or longing for o ldassociations and environment ever filled her heart no hint of it cloudedthe brightness of h er dear face or was heard in the cherry voice as shewent about day after day on her mission o f love, giving courage to theweak and despondant and sharing her more abundant wealth wit h the sickand distressed. And ever as she went she carried the message of peace andgood wil l declared by the Master whose faithful servant she was. During the long month of agonizing suspense and waiting for tidings oftheir son, whose fat e after the battle of Murfreesborough was neverdefinately known: when every footfall mean t his possible return to thewatchful mother, she still had tears for the sorrows of others an d smilesfor those who rejoiced, all within her reach. Were any sick or Everalert, she anticip ated the necessities of all within her reach. Were anysick or in trouble it was she who sough t to comfort; to the needy shecarried relief, flowers, fruit or other dainties, a helpful b ook ormarked paragraph left at the door in the early morning while othersslept, meant a cal l from Mrs. Clark, and in this service she served Himto whom she looked for guidance throug h her long useful life. Among theobjects of her tender care was the blind family, Mrs. Wood a nd daughterMelissa, who lived three miles east of town. For several years Sundayafternoon wa s set aside for them. Filling her double carriage in summer or sleigh in winter with those whocould sing, she drov e to the home, where she was as sunlight afterdarkness. With the near neighbors assembled th e Sunday School lesson wasdiscussed, hymns were sung and a suitable story read to the inmates , wholearned to measure time by the Sunday afternoons so profitably spent. Whocan estimate he r influence? "Her price is above rubies, she stretched outher hand to the poor, she openers h er mouth with wisdom and in her tonguewas the law of kindness. *46
