H e was ill and bed-ridden for some time prior to his death. Blanche had been a nurse and too k good care of him. I am the 4th child of Ruth Blyth. I was almost 5 and was the only othe r person there with Fred and Blanche in their home in Aurora, IL when he died. I was probabl y there as I was not yet in school. I had three older brothers who were school age and two y oung brothers all back where we lived in Hanover, IL. Probably my mom needed a break. I rem ember waking up that day and seeing several strange people in the house. I ask grandma wher e grandpa was - she said "angels took him to heaven". The windows were open in the bedroom a nd the shears were blowing out and it was eerie but peaceful and it made sense to me. [Thi s was a very powerful moment in my life]. I don't recall grandma leaving for a funeral an d I don't remember what I did in the days following. Blanche was born December 21, 1888 and m ost of her siblings moved to Chicago from rural Minnesota when they were very young. Blanche 's first husband Andrew Alexander Blyth died January 29, 1921 at 30 years of age, of "Pleuris y". Blanche put her 3 children in an orphanage, the length of time I am not sure. Fred marr ied Blanche in 1926. Their home on Vermont Street in Aurora, IL was built entirely by Fred a s I understand it. This house was very well built so he must have had experience in carpentr y and other trades. He always seemed hard working as was Blanche. He built a chicken coop ( actually a substantial building) where they gathered eggs for sale I presume. I vividly reme mber grandma processing chickens (with axe in hand, a stump and yes chickens do run with thei r heads off) for dinner which was a life lesson. They had apple trees, berry bushes, grape s and a garden that was amazing. Grandma canned a lot and was a tremendous cook. This wa s a paradise in my young mind. Their lot was perhaps 2 acres, but you never saw such a bount iful plot of land. They were basically self-sufficient. Also I remember Fred built a concre te pond with goldfish in it. I was last there around 1970, about the time that grandma start ed having health problems and she moved to live with her son Wesley outside Toledo, OH. Sadl y, today there is nothing standing on their land, it is just an empty lot, maybe some trees . Their home was the first structure in the area in what was a remote rural setting. He and grandma made many vacat ion trips. The railroad transportation was free for them. They went to many national park s in Colorado, California, Yellowstone, etc. They always bought the slide discs for a Viewma ster which gave us hours of fun and the places they went fascinated us as kids. Our only fam ily travel/vacations were to grandmas. We went by train as our parents as well as grandma ne ver had a car. Relatives and friends helped us out. I mentioned that there were 6 of us boy s and finally my parents had their girl. My mom died February 17, 1971. Grandma came with Un cle Wesley to the funeral in Hanover, IL. Grandma was in poor health, but I will never forge t her weeping and saying in a frail voice "it is not suppose to happen this way, you are supp osed to die before your children." She died March 5, 1977. I attached information that I jus t prepared for my family which was taken from the newly released 1940 Census which is on-lin e at your home computer. I added information relating to Fred that I found on-line. Pleas e verify and add to information on Fred, his parents, the plaque at Ellis Island, etc. when y ou can. Obviously, we would like to know about your father, any other siblings and about you r generation, etc. Attached is a photograph of my mom (Ruth) and her older brother and younge r sister (also Blanche). Additionally, there are two more documents attached that I wrote t o share with my family on the Davis family. We will have pictures of Fred and Blanche tha t I will request from others in my family. My oldest brother, Vance, was very close to Fre d and will have much to say. However, he and his wife Barbara are selling and buying anothe r home in Fort Collins, CO and he will be busy, so have some patience. Thank you for sharin g information.
