William (abt 1566 - 1644)
was the son of William Brewster Sr. and Mary Smythe. William Brewster
Sr. was Bailiff of the Archbishop of York's estate and Master of the Queen's Postes (postmast

living at Scrooby Manor House in Nottingham, England, where royal guests were often entertain
ed.
William Jr. attended Cambridge University, noted for its radical, religious ideas. He spent s
everal
years in the service of Queen Elizabeth's representat
ive in the Netherlands, a country known for its
religious tolerance. When his father died in 1590, young William was appointed to take his pl
ace
as 'Master of the Postes,' but his spiritual views were sympathetic to the Separatist movemen
t and
he began to attend John Smith's Separatists church at Gainsborough where he met William
Bradford of Austerfield. When John Smith and his group emigrated to Holland seeking a more
tolerant environment, Scrooby Manor House became the meeting place of the Separatists. In
1607, Brewster resigned his official position, butpressure from the authorities increased and
Brewster fled to Holland himself. While there,Brewster taught at Leiden University while Will

smuggled to England and declared treasonous by the government of King James I. Brewster was
forced into hiding. Intolerance had found its way to Holland. For the Separatists, Brewster a

Bradford in particular, the idea of spreading their religious views to a whole New World bega
n to
take hold and in 1620, that idea became reality with the voyage on the Mayflower and the
establishment of Plymouth Colony. William Brewster was selected to lead the expedition. He
became the much loved and respected Reverend Elder of the Pilgrims' church in Plymouth and, i
n
his early fifties, was the oldest of the Pilgrims tocelebrate the First Thanksgiving. Very li

known of his wife Mary, including her maiden name.
The couple had five surviving children:
Jonathan, Patience, Love, Fear, and Wrestling. (Love and Wrestling were sons; Patience and Fe

THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT, 11 NOV 1620
The compact was an agreement signed by 41 of the male passengers of the Mayflower, just befor
e
going ashore, and called for a just system of government to be instituted in the new colony
. The
first listing of the compact's signers appearedin 1669 in "New England's Memorial" by Nathani
el
Morton, secretary to the Colony Court. Most historians believe the list does not represent th
e
sequence of signing by the individuals, contending that it is highly unlikely, for example, t
hat John
Alden, a hired cooper, would have been invited to sign ahead of more esteemed members of the
party such as Samuel Fuller or Richard Warren.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:
William Brewster was the Reverend Elder of the Pilgrim's church at Plymouth, since their past
or
John Robinson remained behind in Leyden, Holland with the majority of the congregation which
planned to come to America at a later time. Brewster was a fugitive from the King of England,
because he had published a number of religious pamphlets while in Leyden which were critica
l or
opposed the tenets of the Church of England. He had been a member of the Separatist church
movement from its very beginning, and was the oldest Mayflower passenger to have participate
d at
the First Thanksgiving, in his early fifties. William Bradford wrote a lot about William Brew
ste
r in Of Plymouth Plantation, some of which follows:
"After he had attained some learning, viz. the knowledge of Latin tongue, and some insight i
n the
Greek, and spent some small time at Cambridge, and then being first seasoned with the seeds o
f
grace and virtue, he went to the court, and served that religious and godly gentleman, Mr. Da
vison,
divers years, when he was Secretary of State; who found him so discreet and faithful as he tr
usted
him above all other that were about him, and only employed him in all matters of greatest tru
st and
secrecy...he attended his mr. when he was sent in ambassage by the Queen into the Low Countri
es
...And,at hi sreturn, the States honored him with a gold chain, and his master
committed it to him, and commanded him to wear it when they arrived in England, as they rid
through the country, till they came to the court ...Afterwards he went and lived in thecountr
y, in
good esteem amongst his friends and the gentlemen of those parts, especially the Godly and
religious. He did much good in the country where he lived, in promoting and furthering religi
on not
only by his practise and example, and provocating and encouraging of others, but by procurin
g of
good preachers to the places thereabouts, and drawing on of others to assist and help forwar
d in
such work; he himself most commonly deepest in the charge, and sometimes above his ability
. . . .
They ordinarily met at this house on the Lord's day, (which was a manor of the bishops) and w
ith
great love he entertained them when they came, making provision for them to his great charge
. He
was the chief of those that were taken at Boston, and suffered the greatest loss; and of th
e seven
that were kept longest in prison, and after bound over...AfterhecameintoHollandhesuffered
much hardship, after he had spent the most of his means, having a great charge, and many
children; and, in regard of his former breeding and course of life, not so fit for many emplo
yments
as others were, especially as were toilsome and laborious. But yet he ever bore his conditio
n with
much cheerfulness and contention. Towards the later part of those 12 years spent in Holland
, his
outward condition was mended, and he lived well and plentifully; for he fell into a way to te
ach
many students, who had a desire to learn the English tongue, to teach them English
;...He also had means to set up printing, by the help of some friends
. . . and by reason of many books which would not be allowed to be printed in England, they m
ight
have had more then they could do. . . .And besides that, he would labor with his hands in th
e fields
as long as he was able; yet when the church had no other minister, he taught twice every Sabb
ath
...For his personal abilities, he was qualified above many; he was wise and discreet and wel
l spoken,
having a grave and deliberate utterance, of a very cheerful spirit, very sociable and pleasan
t amongst
his friends, of an humble and modest mind, of a peaceable disposition, under valuing himsel
f and his
own abilities . . .in offensive and innocent in his life and conversation ...he was tender-he
arted, and
compassionate of such as were in misery, but especially of such as had been of good estate an
d
rank, and were fallen into want and poverty, either for goodness and religions sake, or by th
e injury
and oppression of others
;..."

ELDER WILLIAM BREWSTER , OF THE MAYFLOWER, ONE OF THE EARLIEST OF THE
DISTINGUISHED PURITAN LAYMEN IN ENGLAND, WAS PROBABLY BORN IN 1563, AT
SCROOBY, IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, AT THE MANOR HALL OF WHICH VILLAGE BELONGED
TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK. HE AFTERWARDS LONG RESIDED AT THE SAME HOUSE
AT WHICH CARDINAL WOOLSEY HAD MADE HIS LAST STOP BEFORE REACHING HIS
HOME IN HIS FINAL JOURNEY ON COMPULSORY RETIREMENT FROM COURT, AFTER
BANISHMENT BY KING HENRY VIII. ELDER BREWSTER WAS OF GOOD FAMILY, HIS COAT
OF ARMS BEING IDENTICAL WITH THAT OF THE ANCIENT SUFFOLK BRANCH. HE
ENTERED CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY AND REMAINED THERE FOR A SHORT TIME AND
ABOUT 1584, ENTERED THE SERVICE OF WILLIAM DAVISON, AMBASSADOR, AND
AFTERWARDS SECRETARY OF STATE TO QUEEN ELIZABETH, AND WITH HIM VISITED THE
NETHERLANDS, REMAINING IN HIS SERVICE TWO YEARS. HE THEN ABANDONED
POLITICS, DEVOTED HIMSELF EARNESTLY TO THE CAUSE OF RELIGION AND WAS THE
FIRST PROMINENT LAYMAN WHO REJECTED CONFORMITY TO THE CEREMONIES OF THE
CHURCH OF ENGLAND. HE FILLED FOR A TIME THE POSITION OF POSTMASTER AT
SCROOBY, AND CONTINUED UNTIL HIS ASSOCIATE SEPARATISTS HAD BECOME
OBNOXIOUS TO THE ECCLESIASTICAL AUTHORITIES, AND IN 1607, HE EMBARKED WITH
THEM AND HIS YOUNG FRIEND WILLIAM BRADFORD IN A SLOOP AT BOSTON, BOUND
FOR HOLLAND, INTENDING TO FLEE THE COUNTRY. THE CAPTAIN OF THE VESSEL
BETRAYED THEM AND BREWSTER ALONG WITH OTHERS WAS ARRESTED, IMPRISONED
AND BOUND OVER FOR TRIAL. IN THE SUMMER OF 1607 HE SAILED FROM HULL AND
REACHED AMSTERDAM SAFELY. HAVING SPENT MOST OF HIS SUBSTANCE IN
EFFECTING HIS OWN ESCAPE AND AIDING HIS POORER ASSOCIATES, HE WAS OBLIGED
TO RESORT TO TEACHING FOR A LIVING. WITH THE AID OF HIS FRIENDS, HE SET UP A
PRINTING PRESS AND PRINTED A SERIES OF RELIGIOUS BOOKS THAT WERE
CONTRABAND IN ENGLAND. HE WAS RULING ELDER AT THE CHURCH IN LEYDEN.
THROUGH THE HELP OF HIS FRIEND, SIR EDWIN SANDYS, TREASURER OF THE VIRGINIA
COMPANY, HE OBTAINED A GRANT OF LAND IN NORTH AMERICA AND IN SEPTEMBER,
1620, HE SET SAIL IN THE MAYFLOWER WITH THE FIRST COMPANY OF PILGRIMS,
LANDING IN PLYMOUTH DEC. 21, 1620.
BREWSTER WAS RULING ELDER OF THE CHURCH, AND UNTIL 1629 ACTED AS TEACHER
AND MINISTER, ENDURING THE HARDSHIPS OF MEMORABLE FIRST WINTER WITH
WONDERFUL COURAGE AND CHEERFULNESS. HIS FAMILY WHICH CAME ON THE
MAYFLOWER CONSISTED OF HIS WIFE; LUCRETIA, WIFE OF HIS SON JOHNATHAN, A SON
WHO CAME OUT IN THE FORTUNE IN 1621, AND TWO SONS, WRESTLING AND LOVE.
WILLIAM WAS ABOUT 51 YRS OLD ON THE VOYAGE, AND WAS A PRINTER AND
PUBLISHER. HE WAS ON THE ORIGIONAL TRIP OF THE SPEEDWELL WITH HIS WIFE AND
SONS LOVE AND WRESTLING, FROM HOLLAND TO SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:
William Brewster was the Reverend Elder of the Pilgrim's church at Plymouth, since their past
or
John Robinson remained behind in Leyden, South Holland (Netherlands) with the majority of the
congregation which planned to come to America at a later time. Brewster was a fugitive from t
he
King of England, because he had published a number of religious pamphlets while in Leyden whi
ch
were critical or opposed the tenets of the Church of England. He had been a member of the
Separatist church movement from its very beginning, and was the oldest Mayflower passenger to
have participated at the First Thanksgiving, in his early fifties. William Bradford wrote a l
ot about William
Brewster in Of Plymouth Plantation, some of whichfollows:
After he had attained some learning, viz. the knowledge of Latin tongue, and some insight i
n the
Greek, and spent some small time at Cambridge, and then being first seasoned with the seeds o
f
grace and virtue, he went to the court, and served that religious and godly gentleman, Mr. Da
vison,
divers years, when he was Secretary of State; who found him so discreet and faithful as he tr
usted
him above all other that were about him, and only employed him in all matters of greatest tru
st and
secrecy...heattended his mr. when he was sent in ambassage by the Queen into the Low
Countries... And, at his return, the States
honored him with a gold chain, and his master committed it to him, and commanded him to wea
r it when they arrived in England, as they ride through the country, till they came to the co
urt...Afterwards he went and lived in the country, in
good esteem amongst his friends and the gentlemen of those parts, especially the Godly and
religious. He did much good in the country where he lived, in promoting and furthering religi
on not
only by his practise and example, and provocating and encouraging of others, but by procurin
g of
good preachers to the places there abouts, and drawing on of others to assist and help forwar
d in
such work; he himself most commonly deepest in the charge, and sometimes above his ability
. . . .
They ordinarily met at this house on the Lord's day, (which was a manor of the bishops) and w
ith
great love he entertained them when they came, making provision for them to his great charge.
He was the chief of those that were taken at Boston, and suffered the greatest loss; and of t
he
seven that were kept longest in prison, and after bound over...After he came into Holland he
suffered much hardship, after he had spent the most of his means, having a great charge, and
many children; and, in regard of his former breeding and course of life, not so fit for many
employments as others were, especially as were toilsome and laborious. But yet he ever bore h
is
condition with much cheerfulness and contention. Towards the later part of those 12 years spe
nt
in Holland, his outward condition was mended, and he lived well and plentifully; for he fel
l into a
way to teach many students, who had a desire to learn the English tongue, to teach them Engli
sh; .
. . He also had means to set up printing, by the help of some friends. . . and by reason of m
any
books which would not be allowed to be printed in England, they might have had more then they
coulddo....And besides that, he would labor with his hands in the fields as long as he was ab
le;
yet when the church had no other minister, he taught twice every Sabbath...For his personal
abilities, he was qualified above many; he was wise and discreet and well spoken, having a gr
ave
and deliberate utterance, of a very cheerful spirit, very sociable and pleasant amongst his f
riends,
of an humble and modest mind, of a peaceable disposition, undervaluing himself and his own
abilities...in offensive and innocent in his life and conversation...he was tender-hearted, a
nd
compassionate of such as were in misery, but especially of such as had been of good estate an
d
rank, and were fallen into want and poverty, either for goodness and religions sake, or by th
e injury
and oppression of others
;...

NOTE ON William BREWSTER'S WIFE:
The maiden name of William Brewster's wife has not been proven. The claim it was Mary
Wentworth rests solely on the fact that Mary Wentworth happened to live somewhat close to
William Brewster in Scrooby, Nottingham. That is very shaky evidence to say the least. Furthe
r,
it has been proposed that William Brewster may have married Mary Wyrall, but the evidence i
s just
as flimsy for that marriage. There are no fewer than seven marriages from 1590-1610 that have
been located in parish registers showing a William Brewster marrying a Mary. All, however, ha
ve
been satisfactorily eliminated as probable candidates for the William and Mary (Brewster) who
came on the Mayflower. So at present, there is no evidence to document who William Brewster'
s wife Mary actually was.
