Robert de Vere (after c. 1165 – before 25 October 1221), hereditary Master Chamberlain of Eng land,[1] was son of Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford, and Agnes of Essex. He succeeded hi s brother as the third Earl of Oxford, and was one of the guarantors of Magna Carta. Arms of Robert de Vere . Robert de Vere was the second surviving son of Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford, and his th ird wife, Agnes of Essex. The date of his birth is not known, but he was likely born after 11 64. Almost nothing is known of his life until 1207, when he married Isabel de Bolebec, the wi dow of Henry de Nonant (d.1206) of Totnes, Devon. In 1206-7 Isabel and her sister Constance w ere co-heiresses of their niece, another Isabel de Bolebec, countess of Oxford by her marriag e to Robert de Vere's brother, Aubrey de Vere, 2nd Earl of Oxford, to the barony of Whitchurc h[2] The fact that aunt and niece had identical names, Isabel de Bolbec, and were successivel y countesses of Oxford and heiresses of Whitchurch, has led to confusion between the two. . When Robert's brother, Aubrey de Vere, 2nd Earl of Oxford, died in 1214, Robert succeeded t o his title and estates and the hereditary office of Master Chamberlain of England. . At the time of the 2nd Earl's death the dower of his second wife, Alice, said to have bee n a daughter of Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk,[3] had not been formalized. In 1215 Oxfor d settled his sister-in-law's dower by lot, drawing two knights' fees for every one drawn b y Alice,[4] the only known instance of dower being settled in this manner. . Oxford joined the disaffected barons who met at Stamford and forced King John to sign Magna C arta at Runnymede on 15 June 1215, and was elected one of the 25 barons who were guarantors o f the King's adherence to its terms. Together with other Magna Carta barons he was excommunic ated as a rebel by Pope Innocent III on 16 December 1215, and joined them in offering the cro wn to Prince Louis of France.[5] . Oxford took up arms against King John, but pledged loyalty to him after the King had taken Ca stle Hedingham in March 1216. Later in the same year, however, he did homage to Prince Loui s at Rochester.[6] Louis entered London and was proclaimed King. On 14 June 1216, he capture d Winchester, and soon controlled over half of England.[7] . In the midst of this crisis, King John died, prompting many of the barons to desert Louis i n favour of John's nine-year-old son, Henry III. In 1217 Prince Louis retook Castle Hedingha m and restored it to Oxford, but despite this Oxford transferred his allegiance to the new Ki ng in October 1217. Although he did homage, he was not fully restored in his offices and land s until February 1218. . Earl Robert served as a king's justice in 1220-21, and died before 21 October 1221. He was bu ried at Hatfield Regis Priory, where either his son, Hugh de Vere, 4th Earl of Oxford, or hi s grandson, Robert de Vere, 5th Earl of Oxford had an effigy erected in which he is depicte d in chain mail, cross-legged, pulling his sword from its scabbard and holding a shield wit h the arms of the Veres.[8] . Robert de Vere (d. 1221) was a member of a comital family, based at Hedingham (Essex), whic h owed its rise to eminence to the patronage of the Empress Matilda in the civil war of Kin g Stephen’s reign in the 1140s. Robert himself was the third surviving son of Earl Aubrey (d . 1194) by his third wife, Agnes of Essex, and succeeded to the title on the death of his eld er brother, another Aubrey in October 1214. Sometime before Michaelmas 1207 Robert had marr ied Isabel de Bolebec, the aunt and namesake of Earl Aubrey’s wife, who had died childless i n 1206 or 1207. Isabel the niece had been the heiress to the Bolebec estate, which was centr ed on Whitchurch (Bucks.), and her own heirs were her two aunts. Robert’s marriage can there fore be seen as part of a de Vere strategy to retain control over at least half of the Bolebe c lands. The de Veres were one of the least well-endowed of the comital families and would h ave been loath to allow a valuable estate to slip from their grasp. . Robert’s defection to the rebel side in 1215 provides yet another example of King John’s capa city to alienate men who should have been numbered among his natural allies. His predecesso r in the title had been one of the king’s most loyal intimates and administrators. Robert wa s probably moved to defect in part by his resentment at the relief of 1000 marks charged fo r his entry into his inheritance, which was high for an estate of only moderate extent. Mos t of all, however, he probably nursed a grievance against the king for his failure to confir m him in the title of earl and in the office of court chamberlain, which de Veres held by her editary right. Robert is known to have been present at the baronial muster at Stamford in Ap ril 1215 and he was named by the chronicler Roger Wendover as one of the principal promoter s of discontent. He was a key figure in the East Anglian group of rebels. By 23 June, afte r the meeting at Runnymede, the king was evidently angling to regain his support because on t hat date a royal letter was issued which implicitly recognised him as earl of Oxford. By tha t time, however, it was too late: Robert had already been named to the Twenty Five. Toward s the end of March 1216 John took possession of his castle at Hedingham after a three-day sie ge and the earl, who was not present, was granted a safe-conduct to seek the king’s forgivene ss. Within months, however, he had defected to Louis of France and he was not to re-enter ro yal allegiance for good until the general settlement of the rebellion in the autumn of 1217. . Robert died shortly before 25 October 1221 and was buried in Hatfield Broad Oak priory (Essex ). A century after his death, to mark the long-delayed completion of the priory church, a fi ne tomb effigy to his memory was commissioned, carved by the same sculptors who produced th e monument to Aymer de Valence, earl of Pembroke, in Westminster Abbey. At the Dissolution , the effigy was transferred to Hatfield Broad Oak parish church, where it remains. Robert’ s widow obtained the guardianship of their son, Hugh, who was a minor, and of his estates, wh ich she was to exercise for about ten years. She died on 3 February 1245 and was buried in t he Dominican friary at Oxford, nearer to her own family’s estates.
