My “cousin” Kevin Hoeg, asked what i could contribute about Sheriff Joseph R. Hoag. After a bit of research i found his family and history. And he is my 4th cousin 2x removed , as he is descended from where all New England Hoags are: Richard Hoag (1602-1683) from Eng land to Massachusetts in the mid 17th century. So here is what i found

Josiah Rogers Hoag aka Joseph was born on January 13, 1833, in Concord, New Hampshire, his fa ther, Charles Hoag, was 41 and his mother, Eliza (Purington Rogers), was 29. He had one broth er and three sisters. Josiah, as far as i found, remained single all his life and probably died in Nevada after 190 0. His family moved west to Wheatland, Illinois by the 1850 US Census. He alternated usin g Josiah and Joseph throughout his life. I am confident it is the same person. Below is a PDF document i created summarizing his life with the records i found. Unfortunate ly i found no photo or obituary. I would enjoy your sharing what you know about his exploits in Silver Reef??

I'm attaching the beginnings of my notes, which contain some of th e blurps that come up for J R Hoag in the Pioche Weekly Record (77 references, so I haven't l ooked at them all - most are just references to his presiding over cases). First, let me exp lain - Pioche, NV is about 80 miles from Silver Reef,UT, just over the state line. About 1,00 0 Pioche miners and business people came to Silver Reef c. 1874, so the Pioche newspaper cove red the goings on in Silver Reef, as well De Lamar, which was close to Pioche. There's an in teresting note in the May 1888 edition of the paper referring to Joseph meeting up with his b rother in Salt Lake City and the brother returning to Ohio. Does this Ohio location of the br other square with what you have? From the newspaper articles, it appears Joseph moved from S ilver Reef to Pioche by 1890 and then to De Lamar​ by 1894. A closer look at the articles mig ht pin it down further. Can't get you to those articles straight away - here's one link: If you go into advan ced search and search out Hoag, it should pull them all up. I'm also attaching a PDF of Stuc ki's research on Silver Reef - do a search for "Hoag" and it will pull up the references. Pag es 61-62 relate one of the more historic shootings that occurred here; Joseph arrested the mu rderer. So, far, I can't pull up any articles re Joseph after 1899, but still working on it ; I'm thinking if he was still in De Lamar when he died, there should be an obituary. I can' t find him in census records after 1900, so that may point to his having died before 1910. D o you know if the Hoags were Mormon? I just assumed he wasn't, but if he was, I might find so mething in the Mormon records. Deven . The older generation Hoags were Quakers, but i can’t tell about this branch. Josiah “Joseph ” Hoag’s parents and family were buried here: Charles Hoag (1791 - 1860) - Find A Grave Memorial (Non-denominational?) Joseph’s brother was Thomas Clarkson Hoag (1825-1906). Born in Concord NH and died in Los A ngeles. Buried with parents in Chicago. Sometime between 1880 and 1896, he moved to Los Angeles from Evanston, Illinois. So it was po ssible he was passing through Salt Lake City in 1888? But returning to Ohio doesn’t seem t o fit, but i don’t know where Thomas was living in 1888. (1880 US Census was Evanston, IL.) Let me know if you find Joseph’s obituary? Good luck

Hoag Here's his death notice in the Lincoln County Record newspaper of August 17, 1900; it says h e died the evening before in Delamar. I've checked the De Lamar cemetery and he must be in a n unknown grave if that's where he is buried. In a subsequent edition, a new Justice was appo inted due to the death of Joseph, so I know we've got the right one. You say he sometimes us ed Josiah - can you tell me where those instances were? I'm going to have to present your/m y findings to our Historian for doing the biography, so I want to be prepared for questions

I'm attaching an updated versi on of my notes. My loose timeline for Josiah/Joseph is: 1833 - Born Jan 13, 1833 in NH to Charles Hoag and Eliza Rogers. His birth record shows him a s "Josiah" Rogers Hoag, but he went by Joseph in later years. 1850 - 1860 By 1850 the family had moved to Wheatland, Will Co., Illinois 1868 - Was farming in Eden, Alameda County, CA 1876 - According to various articles, by 1876 he was a Sheriff or deputy in Pioche; wasn't ab le to pin down when he might have arrived there. 1878 - By 1878, he was still living in Pioche per an article in the Pioche Weekly re his visi ting the Silver Reef Social Club with a number of other Pioche men. 1880 - Deputy Sheriff of Silver Reef 1888 - Seems to have been back in Pioche; he met his brother, Thomas, in SLC according to a n ews article, Thomas had been on a trip to CA - Thomas ultimately moved to L.A. and died in CA , so this seems to jive. 1890 - Was listed in voter registration for the Pioche precinct. 1892 - Running for Sheriff in Lincoln County, and apparently looking to live some place othe r than Pioche per an article - this may signal his move to De Lamar. Various articles in the 1894-1896 period indicating he was the Justice of the Peace living i n De Lamar. 1900 - Died August 16, 1900 in De Lamar, shortly after the census. Apparently buried there, b ut I've found no burial location. ---- I've passed our mutual information on to Elaine Young, the Historian for Silver Reef; she ha s a magical ability to come up with information that is illusive and obscure, so she may be a ble to put more pieces of the puzzle together. Not sure when she'll have the chance to do a n official biography for Joseph, but when she does, I'll pass it on to you. Thanks, again, to both of you
