True Has Lived There Since 1867 Began His Housekeeping in Log House in the Woods Carried Supplies on His Back from Muskegon Mr. True is an Old Soldier with Records of Service in Civil War--WasWounded At Gettysburg Albert S. True, of the pioneers of Dalton Township, like many of theold timers of Michig an, is a native of New York state. He was born atWarsaw, Wyoming county, October 24, 1842. His father died when he was two years old and from that time untilhe was sixteen he mad e his home with a family named Towne. Then he wentto Cincinnati, where his mother, who had re -married, lived. Hisstep-father was a painter and Mr. True learned the trade from him. In 1861, he returned to New York and enlisted in the 104th regimentor "Wadsworth Guards " at Genesee, Livingston County. Six months later theregiment was sent to Washington and soo n afterwards went to the front inVirginia. The first engagement the 104th was in was the battle of CedarMountain (or Slaughter Moun tain, as the soldiers called it). The fiercebattle of Thoroughfare Gap and the second fight a t Bull Run quicklyfollowed. At Antietam and Fredericksburg. Mr. True's regiment saw much hard service at Chantilly and Antietam.While encamped at Be lle Plain Landing, at these famous battles theregiment was reviewed by President Lincoln an d his cabinet. At Fredericksburg Mr. True made his first march over a pontoonbridge. Chancellorsville f ollowed in a few months and resulted in arepulse for the Union army. Wounded at Gettysburg Mr. True's regiment participated in that greatest of civil warbattles, Gettysburg. In th is battle he received his first wounds, in hisright side and right arm. After he was placed i n the hospital he wastaken prisoner by the Confederates, but the same night was recaptured by the Union forces and soon after the battle was sent to the McDougallhospital on Long Island , where he remained six months. From the hospital experience Mr. True went to Alexandria, Va., andwas transferred to th e Twenty-fourth veteran corps. He did guard duty atseveral points. While at Gatesborough Poin t his term of enlistmentexpired, he was discharged near the White House in Washington. Had Log House at Dalton In 1867 Mr. True located a homestead of 160 acres in Dalton townshipand began housekeepi ng in a log house by himself. Indians were numerous in the vicinity. Wild game such as deer andbear were plentiful an d venison was not a rarity. There was no road fromMr. True's log castle to the stage road. Mr. True's stock of agricultural tools consisted of an ax and landclearing was slow work . All supplies had to be carried on his back fromMuskegon of Whitehall and on every side wer e almost impenetrable forests. "Sitting now at a window of my comfortable home," says Mr. True, "Isee luxurious farms i n every direction as far as the eye can see.Bicycles and automobiles are not a curiousity an d carriages areconstantly passing on one of the finest gravel roads in the state. ThePere Mar quette railroad runs through my farm. Schools and churchbuildings are all around. What a chan ge since 1867." True, Civil War Veteran Dead Was A Pioneer of Dalton Settled in Township Forty Years Ago--Member of Phil Kearny Post While his comrades, with whom he formerly almost never failed toappear on similar occasi ons, were gathering this morning to pay tributeto the veterans that had falled, Albert S. Tru e, a veteran of the civilwar, passed quietly away at his home in Dalton township at 8 o'cloc k thismorning. His death was due to an attack of pneumonia. Dr. J. G. Jackson washurriedly summoned t o his bedside this morning, but it was too late to doanything for the dying man, as he was dy ing when the message was sent. Enlisted Early in War Mr. True was one of the earliest to answer the call for volunteersin the first months o f the war of the rebellion and became a member ofthe 104th New York volunteer infantry, know n as the "Wadsworth Guards,"in 1861, enlisting from his native state to which he returned fo r thatpurpose from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he had gone to live. The regiment of which he was a member was sent to the front aboutsix months after he bec ame a member of it, and Mr. True was service issome of the fiercest battles of the war, inclu ding Cedar Mountain, secondBull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysbu rg. Inthe latter battle he was wounded and sent to a hospital where he remainedsix months. He re-entered the service after his recovery and served out hisenlistment in what was kn own as the Twenty-fourth Veterans' corps. Came to Muskegon in 1867 In 1867 Mr. True came to Michigan and located on a farm of 160 acresin Dalton township , where he has lived until his death. He was a memberof Phil Kearny post, of the G. A. R., an d was active in the work of theveterans of the war. Mr. True leaves a wife and four children, Mrs. True is a resident ofFruitland, as they h ad lived apart for some years. The children are Mrs.Cleone True, who is employed as a governe ss at Los Angeles, Cal.; MissOrea True, recently employed as a bookkeeper in Chicago, but a t presentstaying on her mother's farm, and Raymond True and Irving True, who alsolive with th eir mother. [The Muskegon Daily Chronicle, on or near May 31st, 1907] Albert S. True is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Muskegon County, Michigan.I have not been abl e to locate the grave of Phoebe L. True (nee Hoag)yet, but have much to examine and I expec t to find it. Albert and Phoebe had a rocky relationship. At one point, Phoebe filedfor divorce from Albert , who was an alcoholic since the war. I do notknow if the divorce was officially granted, bu t they lived apart afterthat, splitting the farm and building a second house. The story goe s thatAlbert was actually not much of a farmer, and did poorly with his half,but that Phoeb e and the kids did alright. Here is another interesting bit: The original farm, which Albert gotthrough the Homestead Act , happens to be the same land which is currentlyunder ownership and development by Michigan' s Great Adventure AmusementPark. I took a trip to visit the land, using a plat book and was s hockedto discover that my ancestor's farm is now under a roller coaster

One last thing about Phoebe, and then I'll go on to talk about her kids.One of the reasons th at I know so much about Phoebe's brothers andsisters is because of a huge stack of letters th at I have from the turnof the century. Some of the letters are from Phoebe's sisters, brother s,nieces, and nephews, but many of them are from lawyers in the Buffaloarea. After reading th em all, I have a good picture of what happened. Itseems that one of Phoebe's sisters was rath er wealthy and when she diedthere was a family fight over the money which got so bad everyon e endedup in court and serious feelings were hurt. If you want the details, Ican provide them , but it is worse than daytime soap opera stuff - reallynasty. Anyway, at one point Phoebe wa s a plaintiff and at one point, adefendant in the lawsuit. She was participating long-distanc e fromMichigan and the letters make really interesting reading. I've wonderedif anyone else i n the Hoag line knows about all of this - I sure wouldnot know, if it were not for the letter s I've got. Now here is where the mystery gets more interesting. I have very littleof Albert's personal p ossessions. But I do have this: A littlenot-very-completed daily diary for the year 1867, th e year that he cameto Michigan. This little book contains almost nothing. What little isther e is stuff like "chopped wood today, it was cold" in bad handwriting.You get the picture. But this is interesting: On Saturday, the 26th of October, 1867, hewrites "Received $50 dolla rs by post office order of my Uncle Hoag." Now this blew my socks off. How could Albert have an uncle Hoag??? Keepin mind that this is t wo years before he married Phoebe L. Hoag, so he isnot talking about her uncle indirectly. Wh at this suggests, of course, isthat he met Phoebe because he and Phoebe are cousins. But tha t raises thequestion, what is Albert S. True's relation to the Hoag line? Where doeshe pick u p an uncle Hoag? The only lead I have on this comes in the form of Phoebe's mother -Pamelia Tripp, of whom I k now nothing. I was looking at cemetery recordsof plots around Warsaw, New York and discovere d that there are some Trippheadstones - but I do not know if it is the same Tripp family
