Notes:

THE GENEALOGY OF THE GIFFORD FAMILY FROM MASS. TO MAINE, By Christine R. Brown, 1981, Campbal l Printing Inc., Knoxville, TN. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, UT. 929.27 3 9366b. page 25. Christopher Gifford, son of William, was born in July 1658. He married about 1683/84, Debora n Perry, daughter of Edward and Mary (Freeman) Perry. She was born at Sandwich 2 April 1665 a nd died 23 March 1724 at Dartmouth, Mass. Harry E. Gifford and others have alleged that Chris topher Gifford had a first wife named Meribah, however, no original record of this marriage c an be found. Christopher and Deborah named their first daughter Meriban and this may have bee n in honor of a deceased, childless first wife. This was a custom of the period. Hannahiah Gifford was living at Navesink, Shrewsbury, NJ, by 1668. It is suspected that he ma y have taken with him this younger brother, Christopher, as there is ample evidence that th e two owned adjoining property there. In 1679 titles to land there were confirmed to "Annania s" and Christopher Gifford. Christopher had returned to Cape Cod before 7 July 1682 when he w as before the Court for "contemptuously speaking against dispensers of the word of God" and w as fined ten shillings. It seems that his father gave him land in that part of Falmouth called Suckanesset. We find t hat "Christopher Gifford of Suskanessett in ye Colony of New Plymouth, planter and Joseph Hus s, cooper or planter, are indited...for their notorious misdemeaners and trespass against hi s Majisties authourties, laws and pease." The record related that "Christopher Gifford did... about ye ieght day of December last (1685) and at other times in ye sd December, turbulentl y and violently, by force and arms, resist ye constable of sd Suskanesset in ye execution o f his office, and then and there did wickedly stricke Moses Rowley, Junr., being one of the c onstables, or assistants...on ye head with a c edrtain stick or club, thereby fetching bloo d and shrewdly wounding of him in his head to his great damage." And, when arrested "ye sd Ch ristopher carrying himself very unruly and forceable resisting." He and Hull were accused o f conspiring to resist the authorities in the house of Joseph Hatch, Sr., and that later in t he same month they made "falce please...thereby causing a false imprisement or arrest of sd c onstable & his assistants & other King's officers." Both were found guilty and Christopher Gi fford was fined 7 pounds; Hull 5 pounds plus charges and costs. Gifford's share of the charge s came to 5:12s and18s costs. He petitioned for a reduction of the fine, agreeing to pay 20 s hillings to Rowley "for the wound he gave him in his head". This episode suggests that Giffor d was not under strict Quaker discipline at that time, and contrasts with the rest of the rec ords concerning him. William Gifford, his father, in his will of 9 April 1687 gave to his son Christopher only a " cross out saw and a new payer of shoose", but the records make clear that during the father' s life time he must have helped him to acquire land both in New Jersey and in that part of Fa lmouth called "Tetaker". Christopher and his brother Robert were deeded in May 1683, a larg e tract of land in Dartmouth where both brothers settled. By a deed of 29 January 1688 (not r ecorded until 30 July 1714) Christopher Gifford of Darthmouth sold for 50 shillings paid by W illiam Ricketson (of the same place) a parcel of salt meadow on the east side of the "Coxet " river at Petskechuet, one acre. Christopher and his brother, Robert, made a first attempt t o divide their tract 2 March 1688/89. By a "Certificate of Transfer" dated 17 June 1689, Chri stopher Gifford "of Sandwich" in New England released to the heirs of John Jenkins of the sam e place his right and title in the share of East Jersey sold by his deceased father, Willia m Gifford, to the said John Jenkins. An instrument dated 20 Nov 1699 shows that Daniel Wilcox of Portsmouth, in the colony of Rhod e Island, yoeman, sold for 75 pounds paid by Christopher Gifford of Dartmouth, yoeman, a trac t of land containing about 60 acres "at Poycachuk Point, butting on Coaset River" and 4 acre s "on the eastward side" (recorded 6 April 1700, Bristol County Deeds, Vol. I, p. 46). This s ame item appears as Docket #4558 in the Records of the Superior Court of Judicature, Boston , Court House Annes, 14th floor but the price is given as 70 pounds. The will of Edward Perry of Sandwich, dated 29 December 1694 and proved 9 April 1695 direct s that "my daughter Deborah shall have twenty pounds in money to be paid to her by my son Edw ard." The will of Christopher Gifford of Little Compton, dated 5 October 1746, proved 8 Dec 1748, b equeaths to his son Christopher, his daughters Audrie, Mary Borden, Deborah Wilcox; the heir s of his daughter Meribah; his grandsons Elijah and Canaan Gifford; his granddaughters Rachel , Phillis and Dorcas Gifford. The residue of his estate was given to his son Enos Gifford. (L ittle Compton Wills, Bristol County Probates Vol. 1, p. 43.)

Family-Connection: Email: From: Wendy W. V. Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2014 11:52 PM To: John Hoyt Subject: Job Wilk ins Hi

My name is Wendy Wilkins Valdez and I am a 3rd great granddaughter of Job Wilkins (b. 179 0) (Job -> Benjamin -> Harry -> Russell -> Russell -> me). I have a 3rd cousin who is als o a 3rd great grandchild of Job. Another Wilkins descendant is my father's 1st cousin who liv es in Georgia and Dad's sister who lives in Arizona. We are all Wilkinses at birth. I've neve r seen anyone else work on this line or even think that Job and Aaron were twins, which I'v e assumed, but never proved. You also have full dates of birth, so I would love to know wha t your sources were. What I have discovered about Job is that he spent at least 10 years in institutions, one in P hiladelphia and the final one in the Blackwood area of NJ. His wife Rachel Low stayed in Phil adelphia and her children lived with her to help pay the rent (or mortgage). I don't know i f he became unable to work and had to be supported or if he developed dementia or some long-t erm disease that required hospitalization. But, I found him on two censuses as "inmate" and " patient" while Rachel was still living in their home with adult children and occasional board ers. I hope to hear back from you. I really have never seen anyone else working on this particula r line, so I'm excited to find your work. Thanks so much for your time. Wendy

Notes:

one of the proprietors by purchase of land from the Indians THE GENEALOGY OF THE GIFFORD FAMILY FROM MASS. TO MAINE, By Christine R. Brown, 1981, Campbal l Printing Inc., Knoxville, TN. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, UT. 929.27 3 9366b. page 1. The families of some of the pioneer settlers of Sandwich, Barnstable County, Mass. have recei ved little attention. However, the opposite is ture of the New England Gifford family. Harr y E. Gifford published, in 1896, his Gifford Genealogy in which he gives an account of the de scendants of William Gifford of Sandwich. However, the compiler of that work was handicappe d by what was evidently an inability to search thoroughly in original records, and the enormo us site of the family caused confusion. A great many others have done work on the Sandwich Gr ifford Family and also on the other New England Giffords. William Gifford evidently arrived in New England after 1643, as he does not appear among thos e able to bear arms in that year. The first original record we find of him is among a list o f debts due on the inventory of Joseph Holiway "of Sandwidg", which shows: "It, dew from Will i Gifford" 3s, 4d, 4 Dec 1647 (Plymouth Colony Probates Mayflower Descendant, Vol. 7, p. 20 8 (1906). William Gifford served on the Grand Enquest, 4 June 1650 (Nathaniel B. Sourtleff, ed. The Rec ords of Colony of New Plimouth in New England, Vol. 2, p. 155. The original deed for the Sandwich plantation was excuted by Governor William Bradford 22 Ma y 1651. It was ordered that four men: Goodman (Thomas) Tupper, Goodman (Thomas) Burges, Senr. , Nathaniel Willis, and William Gifford "shall have power to call a town meeting". (Annals o f Sandwich, History of Cape Cod, Vol. 2, p. 48, Rev. Frederick Freemann). This is the third a nd last reference to our William Gifford before there were Quaker missionaries in New England . Subsequant data proves that, although William Gifford became an active member of the Societ y of Friends, it is evident from other data that by 1651 he was married and the father of a f amily. In attempting to discover the name of this first wife one must keep in mind that she p robably married William in England, and it is not necessary to limit search to the families w ho later were Quakers in Sandwich. In this connection it is also worth noting that a Guiliel m Gifford married 11 Feb 1635, Elizabeth Grant. (Record of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London ( 1619-1636) transcribed by J. V. Kitte, in Publications of the Harleian Society, Vol. 25, p. 1 53 (1936). In the same work, p. 133, is shown the marriage of an Ananies Gifford 18 Nov 162 1 to Maria Read. The rare name Ananisa (also spelled Hananies, Hannaniah, Annaniah) was give n to William Gifford's son and was carried down in the family. It also turns up in the famil y of the Giffords of Dry Drayton, Co. Cambridge. England Giffords can be traced back to Norma ndy at the time of William the Conqueror when most branches usually spelled the name Giffard . Inevitably the tempetation to connect the Sandwich Giffords with these celebrated familie s has produced a rash of printed accounts in which the connection is stated as fact but witho ut solid references. In view of the fact that highly skilled professional genealogists have f ound no proof as yet of such connections, it can only be said that evidence has yet to be fou nd to confirm these thoughts. In 1658 The Plymouth Court ordered that a record be made of all land holdings, and this was d one in June at Sandwich. William Gifford's land is there listed. It is an interesting coincid ence that in that same month, 1 June 1658, William Gifford was one of a dozen men who "all o f Sandwich were summoned, appeared to give a reason for their refusing to take the Oath of Fi delitle to this government and unto the State of Engtland, which again being tendered them i n open court, they refused, saying they held it unlawful to take any oath at all". At the sam e Court the notorious consiable of Sandwich was appointed Marshall of Sandwich, Barnstable an d Yarmouth. William Gifford and the others were fined 5 pounds each, 2 Oct 1658. This was th e beginning of the vigorous persecution of the Sandwich Quakers, described by Otis and by Jos eph Besse in his A Collection of The Sufferings of the People Called Quakers. By a deed of 6 May 1683 William Gifford conveyed to his sons Robert and Christopher the trac t of Dartmouth land which he had bought from the widow Warren in 1670. The facts in this tran saction, oddly enough are related fully in a deed of 1736 by which Christopher Gifford convey ed land to his son Enos Gifford. This 1736 deed also refers to William Gifford as a tailor b y trade "of Sandwich" (Bristol County Deeds, Vol. 4, p. 136). It seems that the data of this 1683 conveyance may have been related to the fact that Willia m Gifford, now perhaps in his sixties, was about to marry again. The Sandwich Friends Monthly Meeting, held at William Allen's 4: 3 mo: 1683 records on page 3 3, the intention of marriage of William Gifford to Mary Mills, "both of Sandwich". At the sam e meeting, Gifford contributed 50 shillings to the meeting for the purchase of a cow. The mar riage took place at the Meeting of 16 day 5 mo. 1683, the couple "having expressed their inte ntions at two meetings". Both, again, are coalled "of Sandwich", and both signed the certific ate (not by mark). It is interesting to note that there were thirty witnesses: William and Jo hn Newland: Goerge, William, Francis, Jedediah and Zacchariah Allen; Stephen Wing; Edward Per ry, Lodwick Hauksie, Jedediah Jones, Thomas Grennell, Issac Turner and John Goodspeed. Also R ose Neland; Susannah, Hannah and Elizabeth Jenkins, Priscilla, Hannah, Mary and two Elizabet h Allens; Lydia Gaunt, Jane Landers, Sarah Wing, Mary Perry, Mary Hauksie, Experience Goodspe ed and Mary Turner. But none of the children of William Gifford signed the document, nor di d James Mills, brother of the bride. We find no birth date of Mary Mills, but she certainly was some years younger than her husban d. She was living 21 Jan. 1718/19 and the Friends records indicate that she died on 10 Feb. 1 734. She died intestate. She was the daughter of John and Sarah Mills of Blackpoint, Mass. (n ow Scarborough, ME). The births of only Christopher Gifford and the two young sons by the last wife, Jonathan an d James are of record. By a careful calculation of the dates of births of the first born gran dchildren and by other recorded data, it is believed likely that this William Gifford marrie d his first wife, probably in England, and that he arrived in Sandwich with his first three c hildren, John, Patience and Hannariah. It seems that there is a gap of some eight years befor e the birth of the next child, William, and it is thought that he and his brothers Robert an d Christopher were perhaps by a second wife.

Notes:

For the subsequent thirty years of Stephen's life there is little to be found concerning hi s public life. He was probably one of the last, if not the very last, of the original settle rs of Sandwich to survive. He lived 63 years in Sandwich after the date of the first settleme nt in 1637.[CI:212:?4:CI] military muster roll It is generally believed that immediately following the marriage of, Stephen and Osheah the y located in the "Old Fort House" near Spring, Hill. [CI:209:?4:CI] Source 2 Source 1 Source 3 Source 4 Source 7 Source 5 Source 8 Source 6 Issue Misc 1: A biographical sketch based on records compiled by Col. George W. Wing (1856- 1924) who wa s the first president of the Wing Family of America. Between 1913 and 1924 he published th e results of more than twenty-five years of research : Stephen Wing, youngest of the sons o f the Rev. John and Deborah (Bachello r) Wing to leave descendants in America, was born in E ngland in 1621. We are fortunate in knowing the age of Stephen and that he was three year s old in 16 24, when his mother embarked from England with him and his older sister Debor a h for Holland. Stephen, like his brothers, spent the first years of his life at Flushing, a nd at the Hague; came to New England with his mother when nine years old. We can imagine th at his impressionable years were affected by t he strange, new life in the woods of Americ a which were so full of interest and adventure. Barely sixteen years of age when the famil y settled at Sandwi ch in the spring of 1637, it is not probable that the adventure seeme d seriou s to him at the time. The woods and streams were full of game, the maidens of the p arty were doubtless pleasant to look upon, and to a youth of Stephen's years, it must al l have seemed a lark of splendid proportions. And was not Oseah Dillingham of the party. P erhaps she lived just across the clearing ove r and beyond Wold Trap Neck, and that a far cr y across the waters of the Lake Shawme would reach her home where the "old pear tree" stil l was standing sen tinel when, in 1903, Col. George W. Wing visited the site of that home . It is believed that Edward Dillingham was a fellow passenger on the good ship Wi lliam an d Francis, with the widow Deborah and her four sons...it is known tha t they lived at Saugu s (where that group on the William and Francis first lan ded and lived) and that they made t he settlement in the same party at Sandwic h; and that they lived close neighbors and frien ds for many years. Stephen an d Oseah must have had a romance of their own for they evidentl y loved well bu t not wisely. Living in a time when the strict code of morals devised and pu n ished with the Scarlet letter, Stephen was before the court on March 2, 1647, and fined b ecause of the fact that a child was born to his wife at "an unsea sonable time after their m arriage" which had been the preceding fall. Indis cretions and trivial offenses were taken n ote of by the rigorous laws of the Pilgrims. At different times many of the leading men o f the colony were bef ore the Court charged with irregularities. The rich, the poor, hig h and low, stood alike before the stern mandates at Plymouth. so no particular shame or c hagrin should be felt by Stephen's descendants because of the following offi cial entry in t he Court records following a setting forth of the charge: "T he said Wing, coming into th e face of the Court, freely acknowledging, he was , according to the order of the Court, fin ed and discharged." (Governor Bradf ord signed the record.) It is generally believed that i mmediately following t he marriage of Stephen and Oseah in the fall of 1646, they located i n the "Ol d Fort House" near Spring Hill. Deborah and her son, John, (and possibly Ma tthew ) were living upon their first homestead. Daniel had purchased the Halle tt farm, and it wa s left to Stephen to establish himself, which he was well a ble to do, being then over twen ty-five years of age. In the days of the fir st settlements upon the Cape, the pioneers ha d at various times and places bu ilt substantial stone and brick enclosures as defenses aga inst possible India n attacks. However, they came to know that the Cape Indians were incline d to be peaceable and friendly and that the block houses or forts were unnecessary . It see ms probable that, through the influence of his father-in-law and brot hers, the town of Sand wich sold or assigned the old fort and its surrounding acres to Stephen. Anyway, he seem s to have live
