From: Bob Fell To: John Hoyt Cc: Tom Fell ; Jack Fell Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 10:13 AM Subject: RE: Maiden Name of Phebe John, During the summer of 1977, I did a monograph on great grandfather Fell (Henry J.), after cons iderable research and for no particular reason other than curiosity. My father (Ranald Hoyt F ell) having told us years before how much he enjoyed his grandfather's company...what an inte resting man he was, etc. From that work, here's what I have with regard to your questions... Henry's first wife, Elizabeth T. Maurer, married Henry on July 27, 1865 in Seneca County, Ohi o. They had ten children between 1866 and 1887. Elizabeth T. Maurer Fell died on April 7, 189 2 in Ithaca, Newark Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, at age 45. And this is a direct lift from the monograph... "Phebe Elizabeth Meracle was born September 23, 1849, in Potter County, Pennsylvania. Her fat her was John Meracle and she never knew her mother, not even her name. On Christmas Day, 1867 , when she was 18, Phebe married John Proctor in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Proctor did not serv e in the Civil War and he and Phebe eventually came to live in Tuscola County, Michigan. Joh n Proctor died there on October 26, 1873. Shortly thereafter, Phebe met Amos Shaw and they we re married in Vassar, Michigan on July 25, 1875. There were two children from this union. Sha w died in Vassar on July 20, 1890. Phebe was twice widowed at age 40. On October 31, 1893, Henry J. Fell, Jr., widower, age 52, and Phebe E. Meracle Proctor Shaw , widow, age 44, appeared before the Gratiot County clerk to take out a marriage license. Th e next day (November 1st) they were married by Rev. W.H. Betteys, Jr., a Baptist minister. Th e marriage was witnessed by Orin Bradley and John Bratt, both of Vassar, Michigan. There woul d be no children by this marriage." Great grandfather died at 4:00 a.m. on January 24, 1932, of "chronic myocarditis", having com mitted 90 years, 6 months and 26 days to his life on earth. I have no record of when Phebe pa ssed, but we do know she filed for her Union Army widow's pension on February 5, 1932. Her de claration was received by Section N, Pension Files Sub-Division, Office of the Chief, at 12:3 0 p.m. a week later...on Lincoln's birthday. I hope this is of some help to you, John. Bob

On ancestry.com Origin of Baldwin family in America 17th century , England, the ship Martin, Boston, Connecticut "Before coming to America, lived at St. Leonards in Aston-Clinton, near Dundridge, where he o wned the "Chapel Farm." He married Sarah Bryan, early in 1620. In 1638, Sylvester and his wif e Sarah and six living children, sailed for America in the ship Martin. They belonged to th e "New Haven Company." Sylvester died on the passage, "in mid ocean." July 21, 1638. His wil l was admitted to probate, in Boston, where the ship Martin arrived. He left a large estate . His widow and six children settled with the rest of the emigrating company in New Haven. I n 1643, "the Widow Baldwin" was recorded in New Haven as one of the wealthiest proprietors. I n 1644 she married Capt. John Astwood/ they settled in Milford, Connecticut. Capt. Astwood di ed in London in 1654. She died in Milford in 1669." / Notes on the Ancestry of Sylvester Baldwin by Charles C. Baldwin, the Baldwin family genealog ist, has been added to the Milford site. Sylvester Baldwin, his wife, Sarah Bryan (sister of Alexander Bryan) and six of their seven c hildren left England in 1638 on the ship "Martin." Sylvester died at sea before reaching Amer ica. His widow and children decided to remain in America and settled, as planned, in Milford , Connecticut. In July 1872, Charles C. Baldwin, the Baldwin genealogist, published his note s on Sylvester Baldwin in the New England Historical and Genealogical Society Register, whic h he also published in book form. The Notes have been scanned and linked. It is worth noting here that in April 1873, a follow-up to the Notes article by the Hon. Joh n D. Baldwin was published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Society Register. I n the follow-up, entitled "John Baldwin of Stonington, and Some Other John Baldwins of the Ea rly Colony Times," the author states that the original account of the descendants of Sylveste r Baldwin is incomplete when it comes to John Baldwin of Stonington who married in New London , Rebecca Cheeseborough, widow. In Notes, it states this John and Rebecca Baldwin had five ch ildren and only one son, Sylvester; however, church and other records show that he had six ch ildren including two sons, the other son named Theophilus whose birth is not mentioned in th e town records. I believe Minnie was married prior to Joseph under the nam e McKissick and had Janes. Then, she married Joseph Perry in Wells Cty, Indiana June 15 189 1 (marriage record lists her as Minnie A McKissick) after his divorce from Mary E. Woodward . They returned to Ohio and proceded to have the other children, including an Emma, which I d on't see on your list (may be the living?). Later, they relocated to Michigan, which is whe n Aunt Eloise visited them. Again, thank you for the help - just knowing William's last nam e as Barnard and not Perry is helpful. Mila Henderson

I have been researching an unknown branch o f my family and am slowly unravelling myth from rumor from reality. I am wondering if you mig ht have any family oral history that might help confirm, rule out, etc. some of the rumors an d myths. I have a great-grandfather whose name was Charles Perry. It is said that he was th e son of Joseph Perry (Peary). Based upon some oral information from a great aunt (she is liv ing and the sister-in-law of C. Perry), it is also rumored that he was actually the illegitim ate son of said Joseph. She says when she visited Shirley Perry and family in Michigan at on e time, the family /neighbors made the claim of his illegitimacy. However, I have found a mar riage record for his mother Mary Woodward Sprowl to Joseph Perry in Wells Cty, Indiana. The y both later remarried (the marriage lasted about 3-4 years) 1890/1891 to their next respecti ve spouses, Joseph to Minnie (marriage record Wells Cty) and Mary to William Householder. I a m trying to determine if: 1. Charles is indeed the son of Joseph because he was born PRIO R to the marriage (born Jan 1886 with the marriage in 1888). [However, as a side note, I beli eve his sister may be a true daughter of Joseph given the time line.] 2. A 1900 census reco rd for Joseph and Minnie show that there was another son named William also born in 1886 (bu t Dec) living with them in 1900 the same age as Charles but born in Dec, not Jan. I am assumi ng this is the William O Barnard in your tree? What is his story? 3. Charles very possibly w as actually the son of Mary's first husband John Sprowl, and the stepson of Joseph, and too k on the name Perry and kept it into adult hood. If you can shed any light, or if you hav e heard anything about a Charles Perry from Indiana, I would appreciate any information you m ight be able to provide.
