Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex (d. 1144) was one of theprominent players during th e Anarchy of the reign of King Stephen ofEngland. His biographer, the historian J. H. Round , called him "themost perfect and typical presentment of the feudal and anarchic spiritthat s tamps the reign of Stephen." He succeeded his father, William sometime before 1130. A key portionof the family patrimony w as in the king's hands, as William hadincurred Henry I's displeasure and lost them, along wit h his office asconstable of the Tower of London. The king also held the substantialestate o f Geoffrey's maternal grandfather Eudo Dapifer. Geoffrey's goal in the early years of strife between Stephen and Maudseems to have to recove r these losts lands. He succeeded in this,during the shifting tides of fortunes of the two co mpetitors for theEnglish throne, by bidding his support to first one, then the other. He started out supporting Stephen, who sometime in 1140 (or perhapsDecember 1139) made him Ea rl of Essex in reward for his servicesagainst Maud. In 1140 or 1141 Stephen returned to him t he seizedestates in Essex. In 1141 he was also appointed custodian of the Towerof London. After the defeat and capture of Stephen at Lincoln (1141) the earl,like many barons, acknowle dged Maud as his sovereign lady. Sheconfirmed his custody of the Tower, forgave the large deb ts his fatherhad incurred to the crown, granted him the Norman lands of EduoDapifer, and appo inted him sheriff of Essex, Middlesex and London, andHertfordshire. But before the end of th e year, learning that Stephen'srelease was imminent, he returned to his original allegiance . In 1142he may have been intriguing with the empress; he rebelled when he wasdeprived of hi s castles by the king in 1143. In 1143-1144 Geoffrey maintained himself as a rebel and a bandit inthe fen-country, using th e Isle of Ely and Ramsey Abbey as hisheadquarters. He was besieged by Stephen in the fens, an d met hisdeath in September 1144 in consequence of an arrow wound received in askirmish. His career is interesting for two reasons. The charters which heextorted from Stephen and Mat ilda illustrate the peculiar form takenby the ambitions of English feudatories. The most impo rtantconcessions are grants of offices and jurisdictions which had theeffect of making Mandev ille almost a viceroy with full powers inEssex, Middlesex and London, and Hertfordshire. Hi s career as anoutlaw exemplifies the worst excesses of the anarchy which prevailedin some par ts of England during the civil wars of 1140-1147, and it isprobable that the deeds of Mandevi lle inspired the rhetoricaldescription, in the Peterborough Chronicle of this period, when "m ensaid openly that Christ and his saints were asleep." Geoffrey married Rohese de Vere, daughter of Aubrey de Vere. He hadfour sons: Ernulf, (illegitimate) who was exiled for supporting his father inrebellion Geoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex (d. 1166) William de Mandeville, 3rd Earl of Essex (d. 1189) Robert (d. before 1189) GEOFFREY DE MANDEVILLE .....There was, at this time, among the king's adherents, one Geoffreyde Mandeville, a man re markable for his great prudence, his inflexiblespirit in adversity, and his military skill. H is wealth and hishonours raised him above all the nobles of the realm; for he held theTower o f London, and had built castles of great strength round thecity, and in every part of the kin gdom which submitted to the king;being everywhere the king's representative, so that in publi c affairshe was more attended to than the king himself, and the royal commandswere less obeye d than his own. This occasioned jealousy, particularlyamong those who were familiarly and int imately connected with theking, as Geoffrey, it appeared, had managed to usurp all the right s ofthe king: and, moreover, report said that he was inclined to conferthe crown on the Count ess of Anjou (Matilda). They, therefore,secretly persuaded the king to arrest Geoffrey on th e charge oftreason, and to obtain the forfeiture of his castles, for his ownsecurity and hi s kingdom's peace. The king hesitated for some time,being unwilling to involve the royal maje sty in the disgrace of falseaccusations, when a sudden strife arose between Geoffrey and theb arons, in which abuse and menaces were exchanged between the parties.The king interfered to s ettle the dispute, but while he wasendeavouring to do so, some persons came forward and accus ed Geoffreyboldly of a conspiracy against the king and his party. Instead oftaking the leas t pains to clear himself of the charge, he treated itwith ridicule, as an infamous falsehood ; whereupon the king and thebarons present arrested him and his followers. This happened at S t.Albans. The king brought Geoffrey to London, in close custody, and threatenedto hang him if he did no t give up the Tower of London and the castleshe had erected with wonderful skill and labour . By the advice of hisfriends, to escape an ignominious death, he submitted to the king'swill , and agreed to the surrender; and being thus set at liberty, heescaped out of the hands of h is enemies, to the great injury of thewhole kingdom. For, being turbulent and fierce, by th e exercise of hispower he gave strength to rebellion through all England; as the king'senemie s, hearing that he was in arms against the royal cause, andrelying on the support of so grea t an earl began, with new spirit, toraise insurrections in every quarter; and even those wh o appeared tobe the king's supporters, as if they had been struck by a thunderbolt,were mor e and more humiliated by his secession from the king's party. Geoffrey now assembled all his dependents, who were bound to him byfealty and homage, in on e body, and he also levied a formidable hostof mercenary soldiers and of freebooters, who flo cked to him gladlyfrom all quarters. With this force he devastated the whole country byfire a nd sword; driving off flocks and herds with insatiable cupidity,sparing neither age nor profe ssion, and, freely slaking his thirst forvengeance, the most exquisite cruelties he could inv ent were instantlyexecuted on his enemies. The town of Cambridge, belonging to the king,was t aken by surprise, when the citizens were off their guard , and,being plundered, and the door s of the churches being forced with axes,they were pillaged of their wealth, and whatever th e citizens haddeposited in them; and the town was set on fire. With the sameferocity Geoffre y devastated the whole neighbourhood, breaking intoall the churches, desolating the lands o f the monks, and carrying offtheir property. The abbey of St. Benedict, at Ramsey, he not onl yspoiled of the monks' property, and stripped the altars and the sacredrelics, but, merciless ly expelling the monks from the abbey, he placedsoldiers in it and made it a garrison. Whils t the abbey was sogarrisoned, blood exuded from the walls of the Church and thecloisters caus ed by the anger of God fortelling the destruction of theungodly. This was seen by many, an d I observed it with my own eyes. As soon as the king heard of this bold irruption, and the lawlessinvasion by Geoffrey of a wi de extent of country, he hastened with apowerful array of troops to check the progress of th e sudden outbreak.But Geoffrey skilfully avoided an encounter with the king, at one timebetak ing himself hastily to the marshes, with which that countryabounds, where he had before foun d shelter in his flight; at another,leaving the district where the king was pursuing him, h e appeared, atthe head of his followers, in another quarter, to stir up freshdisturbances. Ho wever, for the purpose of checking his usual inroadsinto that country, the king caused castle s to be built in suitableplaces, and placing garrisons in them, to overawe the marauders, hew ent elsewhere to attend to other affairs. As soon as the king wasgone, Geoffrey devoted all h is energies to reduce the garrisons whichthe king had left for his annoyance, supported by th e king's enemies,who flocked to him from all quarters; and, forming a confederacy withHugh Bi god, a man of note, who was very powerful in those parts, andhad disturbed the peace of the k ingdom' and opposed the king's power,as before mentioned, he ravaged the whole country, spari ng, in hiscruelties, neither sex nor condition. But at length God, the justavenger of all th e grievous persecutions, and all the calamities whichhe had inflicted, brought him to an en d worthy of his crimes. For,being too bold, and depending too much on his own address, he oft enbeat up the quarters of the royal garrisons; but at last was outwittedby them and slain; an d as while he lived he had disturbed the church,and troubled the land, so the whole English c hurch was a party to hispunishment; for, having been excommunicated, he died unabsolved, andt he sacrilegious man was deprived of Christian burial.
