Henry ("Harry Hotspur") (Sir), Kg (1388); born 20 May 1364; knighted 1377, accompanied his fa ther in retaking Berwick Castle from the Scots 1378, Jt Warden of the Marches with his fathe r 1384; Governor of Berwick 1385, served in France in the area around Calais 1386, making rai ds there on the French; on 5 or 19 Aug 1388 (other sources have 15 Aug, but the latest date s eems the most plausible, not least because there was a full moon on 20 August and the Englis h attack came in the evening, with fighting continuing throughout the night) he launched an a ssault on the encampment of an invading Scottish army at Otterburn, c 30 miles northwest of N ewcastle; "Hotspur" and his brother Sir Ralph Percy were made prisoners, but James, 2nd Ear l of Douglas, the Scottish general, was slain, a cross supposedly marking the spot being know n as Percy's Cross; both sides claimed victory, but modern opinion inclines to the Scots; nev ertheless not only were Hotspur and Sir Ralph captured the English popular imagination, keene r to celebrate failure than succcess, and the ballad "Chevy Chase" resulted; the Scots have t heir own ballad, "Otterburn"; Hostspur was released by midsummer 1389; Warden of Carlisle an d the West March 1389-94 (also East March by late 1398), Governor of Bordeaux 1393-95, joine d forces with the 2nd Duke of Lancaster, afterward Henry IV, 1399, as did his father; confirm ed as Warden of East March and Governor of Berwick and Roxburgh by Henry IV 1399, Justiciar o f Cheshire, North Wales (1400-01), and Flint, Constable of Caernarvon, Chester, Conway and Fl int Castles 1400, also granted Anglesey with Beaumaris Castle, together with Lordship of Bamb urgh Castle, for life 1400, a commissioner to treat for peace with Scots 1401, a commander a t Homildon Hill 1402; turned with his uncle and father against Henry IV and fell at the Battl e of Shrewbury 21 July 1403; married by 1 May 1380, as her 1st husband, Lady Elizabeth Mortim er (born 12 Feb 1371; married 2nd, as his 2nd wife, 1st Lord (Baron) Camoys and died 20 Apri l 1417), daughter of 3rd Earl of March, by Philippa, granddaughter of Edward III. H e was attacking Shrewsbury because Henry IV's son who was to become Henry V was being protect ed there. Henry IV and his army met Harry Hotspur before the seige could be established. Legend has it that Harry's death was foretold at Berwick. Naturally he assumed that meant Be rwick-upon-Tweed, a major town of Northumberland/Scotland. The night before the Battle of Sh rewsbury, Harry and his army camped in a little hamlet outside Shrewsbury. It was not unti l the next morning that Harry found out that the Hamlet's name was Berwick. Harry died tha t day in the battle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Sir Henry Percy, byname HOTSPUR (b. May 20, 1364--d. July 21, 1403, near Shrewsbury, Shropshi re, Eng.), English rebel who led the most serious of the uprisings against King Henry IV (rei gned 1399-1413). His fame rests to a large extent on his inclusion as a major character in Wi lliam Shakespeare's Henry IV. The eldest son of Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, he was nicknamed Hotspur by his Sc ottish enemies in recognition of the diligence with which he patrolled the border between Eng land and Scotland. He was captured and held for ransom by Scottish invaders in 1388-89, and i n 1399 he and his father played a crucial part in helping Henry Bolingbroke (afterward King H enry IV) overthrow King Richard II. Henry IV rewarded Hotspur with lands and offices in north ern England and Wales, but the Percys would not be content until they dominated the king. The ir stunning victory over the Scots at Homildon (Humbledon) Hill in Durham, in September 1402 , contrasted with Henry's fruitless attempts to suppress the Welsh rebel Owen Glendower. Neve rtheless, Henry refused to allow Hotspur to ransom the Scottish captives, and he delayed in p aying the expenses of Hotspur's border warfare. Hence in 1403 Hotspur and Northumberland deci ded to depose the king. Hotspur raised a rebellion in Cheshire in July, but Henry intercepte d him near Shrewsbury before he could join forces with his father. In the ensuing battle Hots pur was killed. In the old Chronicles of France, mention is made of forty-sevendifferent incursions by variou s Scandinavian bands called Northmen.The most important of these, under the command of Roll o the Dane,resulted in the permanent occupation of a large province which wassubsequently cal led Normandy. "It was thus the settlement of thesenorthern pirates," says Freeman, "which fin ally made Gaul French inthe modern sense. It was at the same time the alliance with RomanicFr ance which brought the Northmen fully under the influence of Frenchlanguage, law and custom , which made them Normans, the foremostApostles alike of French chivalry and Latin Christiani ty." In thisprovince and of this people was born on the 14th of October 1024,William, Duke o f Normandy, the bold leader in the Norman conquest ofEngland "the great turning point in th e history of the Englishnation." In this province also flourished, one thousand years ago, the Normanfamily of Montagu. They w ere seated probably at Montagules-Bois in thedistrict of Coutances of which place it was sai d "Its ancient lordswere famous in the middle ages." The name and family of Montagu wasprobab ly prominent and distinguished at that time, for we findmountains, castles, fortresses and to wns bearing their name. History has at least recorded the name of one of the family who heldat that time an importan t position of trust and honor. DROGO DE MONTE-ACUTO was born about the year 1040. He became thetrusted companion, follower , and intimate friend of Robert, Earl ofMoriton (or Mortain), the favorite brother of William , Duke ofNormandy. Drogo and the Earl of Moriton were of the same age and both enteredheartily into the plans o f William in his proposed expedition againstEngland. This expedition was in active preparatio n in the summer of1066 and was composed of sixty thousand men and over three hundredships. Dr ogo de Monte-acuto accompanied the expedition in theimmediate retinue of Robert, Earl of Mort ain. They landed at Pevenseyupon the coast of Sussex, late in September, 1066, and immediatel yburned and scuttled their ships, that their only hope might lie intheir courage and resoluti on, their only safety in victory. This marked the advent of the first Montague upon the shores ofEngland, and as he marches o n toward the plain near Hastings (where,upon the 14th of October, the battle of Hastings wa s fought and won),we note that he bears the kite-shaped shield of the Norman invador,it's col or is cerulean blue, and upon it is the full length figure ofa Griffin, segreant (rampant wit h wings spread), and painted a brightgolden hue. This was the original Coat of Arms of the Mo ntagues inEngland *. * A gryphon (or griffin) was an imaginary animal devised by theancients and consisted of th e body and tail of a lion with the headand claws (or talons) of an eagle, thus denoting grea t strength unitedwith great swiftness. William having conquered England and ascended the throne his followerswere rewarded with larg e grants of land. Both his favorite brother theEarl of Moriton and his trusty follower Drog o de Monte-acuto receivedlarge possessions. Drogo obtained the grant of several Manors, particularly in the countyof Somerset. The origin al castle or seat of Drogo was at Montacute, aneminence and parish in Tintinhull Hundred, Som ersetshire, four milessouth from Ilchester. Its ancient name appears to have beenLogoresbur g and was also called Bishopston. Here the Earl of Mortainbuilt a castle and named it after h is friend Drogo de Monte-acuto.(Cappers Topog. Dict.). Camden says of this place that "the Castle has been quite destroyedthese many years and the s tones carried off to build the Religioushouses and other things, afterward on the very top o f the hill was aChapel made and consecrated to St. Michael, the arch and roofcuriously buil t of hard stone and the ascent to it is around the,mountain up stone stairs for near half a m ile." A later writer has this graphic description of this spot. "Adjacent tothe churchyard rises th at noble mount called Montacute, the base ofwhich contains near twenty acres. Its form is con ical and its ascentvery steep, the top terminating in a flat of half an acre whereonstand s a round tower sixty feet in height and crowned with an openballustrade. On this tower i s a flag-staff fifty feet high, on which aflag is occasionally displayed floating fifty-six y ards in the air andexhibiting a grand and picturesque appearance. The summit of this tower, being so highly elevated above the level ofthe central part of th e country, affords a rich and extensive prospectextending westward to the hills below Minehea d and Blackdown inDevonshire and north eastward over Taunton, Quantock Hills,Bridgewater bay , the Channel, and coast of Wales. To the north, Brent-Knoll, the whole range of Mendip, the city ofWells and Glastonbury-Torr . Eastward, Creeche. Southward over theDorsetshire Hills to Lamberts Castle near Lyme, the wh ole a circle ofabove 300 miles in which on a clear day 80 churches are distinguished. This hill is planted from bottom to top with oaks, elms, firs andsycamores the intermingled f oliage of which (especially in theautumnal season) forms a rich and beautifully tinted scener y." While this was the original home of the Montagues, the seat of theirbarony was at Shepton Mon tacute a villa at no great distance fromMontacute. This parish contains the hamlets of uppe r and lower Shepton*, Knolle, and Stoney Stoke, and was held by Drogo de Monte-acuto andhis d irect descendants until the time of King Henry VIII. when SirThomas Montacute leaving no mal e issue, this estate was dividedbetween three sisters. * In Drogo's time, in demesne are two carucates, 8 servants, 8Villanes (farmers), 5 cottagers , 3 ploughs, 2 mills, one not rated,the other pays seven shillings and sixpence. There are 3 0 acres ofmeadow, and wood ten furlongs long and four furlongs broad. Drogo de Monte-acute also held of Robert Earl of Moriton, thefollowing Manors. The manor of Y arlinton. (For description see at SirSimon Montacute, 8th generation). Sutton Montacute, a sm all parish sixmiles east from Ivelchester, lying in a fruitful woody vale under thesouth wes t brow of Cadbury castle, with other high hills toward theeast. It contains thirty houses whi ch compose a long street in theturnpike road from Ivelchester to Castle Cary. Thulbeer, (ancient name Torlaberie). Drogo held this manor from the Earl of Moriton and it descendedthrough a long line of ancestr y together with the manor of Chidzoy, tothe unfortunate Edward, son of George Duke of Clarenc e. Drogo also held of the said Earl one hide * of land in Montagud inthis county. Reverend Joh n Collinson says, "it is altogether probablethat the Earl of Mortain if he had any other reas on than that of aLatin definition---imposed on his demesnes at Bishopton (Logoresburg)the app elation of Montagud in compliment to this Drogo, his favoriteand confidential friend." * A hide of land was supposed to consist of 160 acres and was made upof the following parts , viz.-ten acres make a ferundel, orfardingdeal, four ferundels make a yard land, and four ya rd lands makea hide, so four hides it is said, or 640 acres, make a Knight's fee. But waving this matter, we find the said Drogo-de-Monte-acuto inpossession of these estates u ntil his death, which took place aboutthe latter end of the reign of King Henry I. (about 112 5) A curious fact may be here recorded, that upon the spot where thebattle of Hastings, was foug ht, William the Conqueror founded an Abbeywhich was called Battle Abbey, and in the words o f his charter,"Instituted a market to be kept there on the Lord's day free from alltoll-" an d that Anthony Viscount Mountague, a lineal descendant ofDrogo, about the year 1575 or 1600 , built a fine house there andobtained authority of Parliament to have the market changed t o anotherday.
