In the early 2000 -2004 period or so and then again in 2009 -2010 I worked with these folks o n their Duehning branch extensively. I am sure I shared some of the Gehrke material with the m. Well, when I recently saw your entry about Edward I decided I must contact you. Yes, William Gottlieb Gehrke, my great grand father, was married twice. Many of us desc end from his second wife, Charlotte Bartelt. His first wife, Caroline Wilhelmine Reinke, died July 27, 1851 sadly from smallpox leaving fi ve living children. The last one of that marriage to be born was Ernest Friedrich Gehrke, b . Sept. 3, 1849. He died in infancy June 28, 1850. This family lived in Hermelsdorf, Naugard , Pommern.(I have a list of these children of William and Caroline if you need it). William h ad been born )October 25, 1811 in Hermelsdorf. William married Charlotte (whole name was Maria Charlotte Friedericke, went by Charlotte ) on May 14, 1852 in Burow, Naugard Pommern. Edward Charles was their first son, born Feb. 7 , 1853 in Hermelsdorf, Naugard Pommern. Thus Caroline is not the mother of Edward Charles . Caroline had died in 1851--how could Edward be her son when he didn't arrive until 1853 ? Edward's mother, Charlotte was born on Dec.23, 1825 in Franzfelde, near Hermelsdorf, Nauga rd of parents William Bartelt and Dorothea Sophia Bloedorn,contrary to some records that clai m other parents for Charlotte. Burow church served the Franzfelde people. A second son, Ernest William David Gehrke was born in Hermelsdorf on May 28, 1855. Th e family then left Hermelsdorf with the five children from William's first marriage and the t wo young sons from the 2nd marriage, sailing on the SAGA in 1856 and came to America settlin g in Wausau Township (later Maine Township), Marathon County, Wisconsin. Gehrkes were earl y pioneers in their township, among the many Germans that settled in Marathon County. Willia m's farm was the second in his township. Charlotte may have had brothers who also settled i n that same area that worked in early surveying in Wisconsin. Merrill, also appears in record s a smaller city north of Wausau and an early trade center for the farmers in that area. I t is in Lincoln County and about 17 miles north of Wausau. William and Charlotte had four more children in Maine Township including their 3rd son , my grandfather, Frank Gottlieb, born April 22, 1858, and three daughters. These were Berth a Marie, born May 2, 1859, Auguste Wilhelmina Johanna, born Dec. 29, 1862 and Emilie Mathild e Wilhelmina born Mar. 9, 1867. The Duehning family, Ferdinand and Henriette Duehning and two of their children, Otilli a and Amelia came to the Wausau area and Maine township in 1857 from Hermelsdorf or nearby Ka nneburg, Saatzig kreis, Pommern and renewed friendship they had with Gehrkes in Pommern. Late r on Edward Charles and Ottilia married in 1874 and soon went west to farm near Seward, Nebra ska. They raised a family of 14 children, though several died as infants or young children . (I can send you the details on their children if you want). Ottilia's parents Ferdinand an d Henriette went with them. Edward & Ottilia and part of their family later moved to Edwall W ashington also to farm in 1902. Our William and Charlotte stayed in Wisconsin all the whil e (contrary to some printed material by other members of the extended family claim

) The Mar athon County home farmstead passed on to my grandfather in 1877, when William Gottlieb died , then to one of my grandfather Frank's sons, and later a grandson (my cousin Norman Gehrke ) ran it until 1949. It almost became a centennial farm

One other son of William and Charlotte went west--the second son Ernest William David G ehrke also to farm in Nebraska near Grand Island but returned to the Eau Claire area, Dunn Co unty Wisconsin in 1906. My mother Eleanor Henrietta Gehrke Pautz (daughter of Frank and Bertha (Sellin)Gehrke ) grew up on the Gehrke home farm near Wausau in a family of ten children and as a kid I visi ted the farm many times when one of my uncles ran it. Records say that the first family of children of William and Caroline who came to Ameri ca with William and Charlotte did settle in the USA. We lost track of them, though recentl y through my genealogy I have traced one of the family with census. I guess they scattered a nd were older than the second family of children and we never got to know any of them. I have done extensive searches about all of these Gehrke families and have lots of reco rds and other material to prove the connections. It has been a fascinating journey. We als o have made contact with descendants of one of William Gottlieb's brothers in Germany after t he Berlin Wall came down. We have been there twice to visit, as well as to the old village s of our people (villages are now in Poland)---trips in 1996 and 1999. We still write and on e of the daughters of my third cousin and her husband came this last October to be with us
