Grandpa "Dave" Arnold is 95 years old, but he wouldn't miss a football game for a hundred dol lars - and much less a football game in which his grandson was a star performer. Grandpa Arno ld is the grandfather of Quarterback Lee* of West High, and when West crossed Scarlet and Bla ck line Friday, hollered himself hoarse. He expects to flaunt West High banners in the face o f the Lee township gridster for several seasons yet. *Harry A. Lee, article probably about 1919 pasted to the reverse side of the above article: .....A line plunge failed to gain. On a fake punt Lee was thrown for a one-yard loss. A forwa rd pass was good for seven yards. Lee took the pass from Lair, fumbled after making the catc h but recovered the ball. Vimont punted and it was East's ball on its 13 yard line. West wa s penalized fifteen yards for interfering with the fair catch. Walters hit the line for four yards. A forward pass was incomplete. East was penalized five y ards for offside. The gymnasium was filled to capacity, and each side was well represented with rooters. The ma chine carrying a majority of the All Stars players to Pit One from Fall River Mills broke dow n en route, and the game was delayed an hour in starting. Once started, however, plenty of thrills were furnished the spectators, and spectacular baske t shooting on both sides happened often during the game. Phillips ** LEE *** and Keely starre d for Pit One, and were heavy point makers, while McIntosh and Dunlap were the most aggressiv e, and heaviest point getters for the All Stars. Pit One won by a score of 29 to 19. A dance given by the Pacific Service Employees Association was held in the Social Hall afte r the game. Also, from the Biographical and Historical record of Ringo ld and Union counties, Iowa, Lewis Publishing company, 1887. David Phetteplace Arnold, was a native of Herkimer County, New York, of bl ue Yankee blood and was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was married in N ew York to Miss Alpha Seaward, a relative of the Honorable William Seawa rd and also a native of the Empire State. After their marriage, they mov ed to Muskingum County, Ohio, in 1815 where they maintained their home f or forty years, removing thence to Marion County, Iowa. He died in Mari on County on his farm at the advanced age of eighty-five years. He was a m illwright by trade in Ohio but the latter part of his life was devot ed to agricultural pursuits. he built many mills in Ohio. In his political views Mr. Arnold was a Whig and later a Republican. His w ife died at Chariton, Iowa at the age of eighty-six. A true Christian a nd devoted member of the Baptist Church. After they were married, David Phetteplace Arnold and Alpha Seaward mov ed west to Muskingum County, Ohio, in 1817. Their son, Stephen Seaward Arn old, was born in Ohio in 1830 when David was 38 years of age. David w as a farmer and lived near New Concord, Ohio in 1830. The booklet publish ed by the town of New Concord in the 1980s described the early town layo ut and lists the early lot owners. Among the owners was David Arnold who h ad purchased the second lot east of the intersection of Main and Liberty S treets on the south side of Main Street. He apparently bought the lot on s peculation, planning for the value to increase as the town grew. Several o ther residents did the same. His son, Samuel, owned the second lot furth er east and built a large house there which is currently known as the Nels on-Arnold House. It had also been used as an inn. David's son Edward move to Dallas Township in Marion County, Iowa in 185 5. David and Alpha moved to Marion County, Iowa after 1856 with their oth er son, Stephen, wife Elizabeth (Gill) and their young family. At the ti me David was 63 years old. Edward later moved to Benton Township southea st of Chariton. David died in Lucas County in 1880. Alpha lived the remain der of her life with her sons, Stephen and Edward. We believe that she di ed in Chariton, Iowa, at age 95 but have never been able through Feder al or State census or other Iowa records to establish this. David's grave is located in the Salem Cemetery in Benton township about t en miles south of Chariton, Iowa. His son Edward's and his wife, Sophia' s, graves are adjacent to David's. David's stone is a classical pill ar of pink marble with his name, dates of birth and death, and birthplac e, Herkimer County, New York, inscribed on it. The stone does not have Alp ha's name inscribed. The following are directions to the Salem Cemetery. Beginning at the RR ov erpass, east of Chariton, Iowa, heading east, turn right onto a dirt ro ad at the bottom of the east side of the overpass. Cross the RR track a nd bear left. After a few sweeping turns and about 2.0 miles, cross t he RR tracks again. In 1.2 miles, a road intersects from the right. Turn r ight and immediately cross a RR track. A distance of 0.2 miles further, t he cemetery will appear on the left. The Arnold markers are near the le ft rear boundary of the cemetery. Notes:

Ancestral file # 23KD-8KK Referance Number: T94697-wf Change Date: 26 Oct. 2002 at 16:15 Alpha Seaward (Seward) was born in her father s tavern, and in her girlhood days was accustomed to meet people from different parts of th e world, as her father s house was a favorite stopping place. As she grew older, she was fearless and strong, which served her well in her undeertakings i n life. When quite a young girl, a peddler who was stopping for the night at her father s house, heard some of the other guests laughing at Alpha because of some feat she had perfor med, and asked her what she could do, to which she answered that she could do anything she un dertook. Lying in the back yard was a good sized log, which he bantered her to chop in two. Replying t hat she thought she could, he told her that if she compleated the task before breakfast the n ext morning, he would present her with a pair of slippers. About sunrise the ring of an aze was heard, and before breakfast, Alpha had finished her task . She received the slippers amid shouts of laughter, and that night she danced in them until th eir soles were worn off, feeling that she had not been overpaid for the work of the morning. She and her husband moved to Ohio two years after their marraige, living there until 1855, wh en they moved to Lucas County, Iowa. At that time Ohio was a wilderness, while Iowa was considered part of the great northwest. Alpha Seaward Arnold was of that splendid Purtian ancestry who were pioneers, not only in th e early settlement of the country, but the advanced guard in that mighty column of civilatio n which has converted the then unknown West into a magnificent galaxy of free states. Her lif e embraced nearly the entire history of the Republic. She witnessed the most wonderful and rapid development of wealth, science, art, and mechanica l invention. She lived to see the greatest war of modern times, and sent her sons forth to battle in the m ighty conflict for freedom. Through all the vicisitudes of passing years, she lived a quiet life. After the death of her husband in 1880, she made her home with her two sons- Edward, who live d on a farm, and Stephen, who resided in Chariton, Iowa, where she died October 5, 1891, bein g her ninety-fifth year of her age. She retained her mental faculties until the end, and greatly enjoyed living over with friends , the events of a long and useful life.
