Gerret Janse was the only son of Jan (The Book of Snedekers - #101) and Jan's first wife, Ann etje Buys. Gerret obtained a patent for 27 "Morgens" of land on the west side of Flatbush o n January 24, 1662 at approximate age of 22. He was the Overseer of Flatbush from 1676 throug h 1679. He was also granted two fifty acre lots in Hempstead Plains (now Hempstead, L.I., NY) . A marriage agreement dated December 6, 1669 (four days after his second marriage), named hi s three children by his deceased wife. Gerret's will was dated October 10, 1688, and proven A pril 20, 1692 in Liber "A" Kings County, New York. Joris Jansen Rapalje ( George ) Joris was baptised as George Raparellitt on April 28, 1604 in the Roman Catholic Church of St . Nicholas at Valenciennes, Belgium. d. 1665 in New York " The Ferry, BrooklandTownship, Kings County. " Source: 287, Pedigree # 3 244 Ref. # 1034 One of the founders of Fort Orange. ( Albany, N.Y. ) One of the earliest settlers of New Amsterdam. ( New York City ) In her book, " Famous Families of New York, " (1970) Margherita Arlina-Hamm writes: "Among th e first settlers in the New Netherlands, was Joris Jans de Rapalie, a noble Huguenot of La Ro chelle, France, better known under the Dutch form of his name, Jan Joris Rapaelje. His famil y had been distinguished in the history of Brittany from the middle of the eleventh century. In this romantic province they owned large estates, and were famous for their valor and patri otism. Many of them took part in the Crusades, while others achieved distinction in the Frenc h wars at home and abroad. They were among the first converts to the Reformed faith, and pai d the ususal penalty for their non-conformity. Some were killed, while the majority were forc ed to flee to Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland. Joris was among those who escaped to Holland. Here he remained a short time, and then, wit h a company of venturous men and women, he took passage in the ship " Unity " of the Dutch We st India Company, and arrived in New Amsterdam in 1624, being one of the earliest settlers. He stayed a short while at New Amsterdam, and then went t o Fort Orange, now Albany. Here he remained three years, and returned to New Amsterdam, wher e he lived until 1637. In June of that year he bought a large tract of land from the Indian s on the Long Island side of the East River, and there made his permanent home. The tract wa s of 335 acres, and included a large part of what was called the Wallabout. He was a man of h igh integrity, and a few years after his arrival in Brooklyn he was made a magistrate. He mar ried Catalina Trico, daughter of Joris Trico of Paris, by whom he had eleven children..." The above book also showed a photograph of the title page of the Rapalje Family Bible and a p age showing family records. . Joris' name evolved to be known as George. The Rapalje family is also chronicled in the book , "The Middaughs of Dryden, NY" (1985) Compiled by Rhoda M. Durkan of Fairfax, Virginia. Page 1 begins "The Middaugh story really begins with the departure from Holland of Joris Jans en Rapalje and his young wife, Catalyntze Trico, who were among the first immigrants to the N ew World...In April 1623, the first group of colonists, thirty families of Walloons [those in habitants of the Southern Netherlands who spoke French instead of Flemish] and Huguenots, ass embled on the deck of the ship "New Netherland" under the command of Captain Cornelis Jacobse n May, New Jersey, was named. They were mostly Protestant refugees who had sought asylum in H olland from religious persecution. They listened politely as two magistrates read to them th e "Provisional Order" of the West India Company. First of all, they must obey orders, be loyal Reformed Calvinists, and convert the heathen wi ld men. They must live where they were told for at least six years, lending a hand in all com munal enterprises, selling all materials for export to the company, recognizing the company' s rights to all mining properties and pearl fisheries and absolute monopoly of the fur trade . To protect Holland's industry, they were not to sell for profit any of the products of thei r own handicraft. They must plant only what they were ordered to sow. They must be careful no t to trade with outsiders or tell them the business or profits of the company. They must be h onest and respectful in their dealings with the natives. Among these passerngers were 19-year-old Joris Jansen Rapalje and his 18-year-old bride, Cata lyntze Trico, the daughter of Jeronimus Trico. Joris was born in Valenciennes, France and bap tized in the Roman Catholic faith on April 28, 1604. The baptismal record lists him as the il legitimate son of Jean Rapareilliet. One source states that Joris was descended from a nobl e family of Brittany. . Catalyntze was born in 1605 in Pry, France, on the Herve River directly south of Charleroi i n Hainault. In the marriage bans the name is spelled "Raparlie" andJoris's occupation is list ed as "boratworker," probably a weaver. In "The Hudson" Carl Carmer tells of the passage. "The route of the "New Netherland" was thro ugh the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Then the Canary Isles rose in fresh bright col ors from the sea. The Savage Islands lay beyond and white sand shores beneath Virginia's tuft ed pines. Soft breezes and the moon of May performed their spell upon the pioneers, for Catzlyntze Trico long years later said she saw four weddings on the deck below the wind-fille d sails." . In "Proceedings of the New York Historical Society" by Augustus H. Van Buren, we learn, "Tw o months later they reached the mouth of the Hudson, then called the "River of the Prince Mau ritius," in honor of the Stadholder of the Netherlands, Prince Maurice. Some of the passenger s left the ship at that point and set out for the Delaware, others for Connecticut. Eight me n stayed to begin the permanent settlement of Manhattan Island. Then Captain May, with about eighteen families, including Joris and Catalyntze, sailed up th e river to where Albany now stands. There they built a quadrangular stockade of logs, new cu t from the nearby woods, and called it Fort Orange. Most of the colonists could neither read nor write. They were a wild, uncouth, rough, crowd . They lived in small log huts thatched withs straw. They wore rough clothes and in the winte r were dressed in skins. They subsisted on a little corn, game and fish. They were afraid o f neither man, God, nor the Devil. They were laying deep the foundation of the Empire State." . On page 2 of "The Middaughs of Dryden, NY", the story continues: "The costume of the wife o f a typical settler usually consisted of a single garment, reaching from neck to ankles. In t he summertime she went bareheaded and barefooted. She was rough, coarse, ignorant, uncultivat ed. She helped her husband to build their log hut, to plant his grain, and to gather their cr ops. If Indians appeared in her husband's absence, she grasped the rifle, gathered her childr en about her, and with a dauntless courage, defended them to the death. They were a stalwar t race, strong to hold their own in the struggle for existence and in the establishment o f a permanent community. In two depositions made by Catalyntze in 1685 and 1688, she states that during the three year s they lived in Fort Orange, the Indians were "all as quiet as lambs," but other sources do n ot bear her out. Jameson in "Narratives of New Netherland" states that in 1625 the Mohicans , while at war with the Mohawks, asked for assistance from Fort Orange. The Mohawks overwhelm ed all of them, and the commander of the fort and three of his men were killed. One was roast ed and eaten. . On June 9, 1625 their first child, Sarah, was born to Joris and Catalyntje, the first white Christian female of European parents born in New Netherland. The following year Joris a nd Catalyntze went to Manhattan after Fort Amsterdam was completed. Only fifteen or sixteen m en remained at Fort Orange. Joris was one of the "Twelve Men" magistrates who were representatives chosen at the reques t of Governor Kieft to advise respecting war against the Weckquaesgeeks, by an assembly of he ads of families convened in August, 1641. They counseled delay, but finally in January 1642 c onsented to war. When they proceeded to demand reforms, especially popular representation i n the Council, the governor dissolved them. The Twelve Men afterwards reduced to Eight, in court matters could neither vote nor give advi ce, but were chosen, in view of the war and some other occurrences, to serve as cloaks and ca ts-paws. Otherwise, they received no consideration and were little respected if they oppose d at all the views of the director, who himself imagined, or certainly wished to make other s believe, that he was sovereign and that it was absolutely in his power to do or refuse to d o anything. Governor Kieft had little regard for the safety of the people, as clearly appeare d in that ill-fated war with the Indians. However, when it resulted in disaster, he devised a ll sorts of certificates and petitions to shift the blame upon others. The war was carried to o far, and everyone laid the damage and bloodshed to his account. . Another source states that Joris was a member of Governor Stuyvesant's Council. On June 16, 1 637 Joris purchased from the Indians an estate of 335 acres called "Rennegackonk." It was loc ated on Long Island in the bend of Wallabout Bay. It was probably a farm and was occupied b y him until about 1654. In 1870 the site was occupied by the U.S. Marine Hospital. . Joris died in New York in 1665. His will lists him as of the Ferry, Brookland Township, Kings County. Real and personal property was left to his wife and children. The exe cutor was John Middaugh." ******** RELATIONSHIP: Film No. 1035615.8, "Howell Family", pp. 335-337. In 1623, he and his future wife Catalyntie Trico, emigrated to New Amsterdam with the first D utch settlers. They sailed under charter of the Dutch West India Company, in the ship "Unity" , commanded by Arien Jorise. In a deposition by Catalyntie, she said that as soon as the "Unity" arrived at "Mannatans", n ow called New York, two families and six men were sent to "Harford River", two families and s ix men to Delaware River, eight men were left at NY, and the rest of the passengers stayed wi th the ship as far as Albany, then called "Fort Orange." Bans were posted in the Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church 13 January 1624 for a marriage betwee n Joris "from Valenciennes boart-worker age 19 residing on 't Vaelepadt and Catherine triko f rom pris in Walslant accompanied by mary Fla(m)engh her sister residing in the Flask age 18 y ears." It is believed that "boartworker" means weaver of a certain kind of cloth. After their marriage, Joris and Catalylntie remained in Albany, the center of the New Netherl ands fur trade. Their daughter, Sarah, was born in 1625, and was the first white child of Eur opean parentage born in New Netherlands, which then covered the present states of New York, N ew Jersey, and part of Connecticut. . In 1626, the Rapalje family moved to New Amsterdam, now New York. They remained there for 2 2 years, owning and occupying a house on the north side of the present Pearl Street, abuttin g against the fort. They remained there until after the birth of their youngest child in 1650 . In August 1641, Joris was one of the famous Council of Twelve Men representing Manhattan, Bro oklyn, and Pavonia, elected to confer with Governor Kieft to suggest means to punish the Indi ans for a murder they had committed. . Joris was an innkeeper, a farmer, and a seaman during his 22 years in Albany. He was calla d a "chief boatswain" in Colonial records of 1647. His name appears as late as 16 March 164 8 on records of persons who kept taverns or taphouses. Up until 1656, he figures frequently i n court records of numerous suits. In about 1655, Joris and Catalyntie removed to a tract of land on Long Island, south of the I sland of Manhattans in the Walleboght or Wallabout Cove (now Brooklyn). He had purchased th e land, called "Rinnegacknock" from the Indians on 16 June 1637, and received a patent for i t from Governor Kieft on 17 June 1643. His farm of about 335 acres was described as "on Lon g Island, extending from a certain 'kripplebush' (swamp) to a place where the water runs ove r the stones". His woodlot was on a hill where Fort Greene Park now is located, and his meado wland on the level City Park. A creek ran through his property and emptied into Wallabout Bay . It is said that when a child, Sarah was ferried in a tub between Governor's Island and Broo klyn. . Joris was a magistrate of Brooklyn in 1655, 56, 57, and 1660. He was elected to the office o f deacon in the Reformed Dutch Church there in 1661. He died at an election of church officer s, 21 Feb., 1663.
