On the other side, never had any Roman th|e people's good-will and devotion more zealous throughout all the changes of fortune, more ea|rly in its first springing up, or more steadily rising with his prosperity, or more constan|t in his adversity than Pompey had. In Strabo, there was one great cause of their hatred, hi|s insatiable covetousness; in Pompey, there were many that helped to make him the object of t|heir love; his temperance, his skill and exercise in war, his eloquence of speech, integrit|y of mind, and affability in conversation and address; insomuch that no man ever asked a favo|ur with less offence, or conferred one with a better grace. (TRYPHAENA) Cleopatra 69-30 B.C. Queen of Egypt since 51, married Julius Caesar (not recognized by Rome), mother to his son Ca esarion. After Caesar's assassination lover of Marc Anthony. After defeat at Actium at the ha nds of Octavian, committed suicide. (http://stabi.hs-bremerhaven.de/whkmla/sat/wb/ant/hellenism/hellenpoliticians.html) Cleopatra VII of Egypt Cleopatra was a co-ruler of Egypt with her father (Ptolemy XII Auletes), her brothers/husband s Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, consummated a liaison with Gaius Julius Caesar that solidifie d her grip on the throne, and, after Caesar's assassination, aligned with Mark Antony, with w hom she produced twins. In all, Cleopatra had 4 children, 3 by Antony (Cleopatra Selene, Alex ander Helios, Ptolemy Philadelphus) and 1 by Caesar (Caesarion). Her unions with her brother s produced no children. ... Father's reign "Cleopatra" is Greek for "father's glory," and her full name, Cleopatra Thea Philopator, mean s "the Goddess Cleopatra, the Beloved of Her Father." She was the third daughter of the kin g Ptolemy XII Auletes, probably born to her father's sister, making her third in line to rul e after her two other sisters died. Court intrigue soon brought the two into open conflict; she disco vered a plot against her life by his advisors and fled to Syria. Gathering what army she coul d, she returned to Egypt, met Ptolemy’s army and was stopped at Pelusium, on Egypt’s border . Meanwhile Julius Caesar had arrived in Egypt, chasing the fleeing Pompey. Cleopatra, throug h a ruse, managed to get into the Egyptian palace and meet Caesar. Hearing both sides of th e story, Caesar orders the two to mend their differences. They can not, Caesar sides with Cle opatra, and Ptolemy XIV is killed during battle. Cleopatra has an affair with Caesar, bears his child, and then travels to Rome to meet Caesar . Julius Caesar is assassinated, and Cleopatra returns to Egypt. When Octavian and Mark Anton y go to war, Antony goes to Egypt for help. Cleopatra meets him at Tarsus, on a splendid roya l barge, and the two make plans. Again involved in an affair, now with Antony, she eventuall y marries him, and bears him three children. After losing the battle with Octavian at Actium , Antony and Cleopatra return separately to Egypt and both commit suicide, separately. While Cleopatra VII obviously used her female assets to win over two important men of Rome, i t must be remembered she was a woman in a man’s world. She would have done anything to save E gypt from domination by Rome, who at the time had a very poor reputation. Indeed, after Rom e took over Egypt, the natives were treated as a huge community of slaves. She did everythin g she could to save her country, but put her chips on the wrong man. Antony let her down. (http://www.ancientroute.com/people/cleopatra7.htm)

Notes:

PHILADELPHUS Berenice IV 58-55 B.C. Ptolemaic Dynasty Berenice IV was the oldest daughter of Auletes (Ptol emy XII Neos Dionysos) and ruled for three years during his exile. At the beginning of his ex ile, she co-ruled with her mother Cleopatra V Tryphaena until the mother's death about a yea r later. Berenice ruled as sole regent and was expected to marry. The one selected was Seleuc us Kybiosaktes. After a few days, she had her husband strangled. The second man she chose wa s Archelaus. Her father finally paid out enough money and was brought back to Egypt. Archelau s' army was defeated and Pompey suggested that Auletes be returned to the throne. One of hi s first acts was to have his daughter, Berenice, executed. Berenice IV Cleopatra Epiphaneia, queen of Egypt, daughter of Ptolemy XII presumably by Cleop atra V, here estimated to have been born c79-75, queen with Cleopatra VI, here identified wit h Cleopatra V in c. June 58, possibly coregent with Archelaus in summer 56, deposed by Ptolem y XII in January/February 55, executed by him shortly thereafter. Berenice IV was posthumousl y expunged from the dynastic cult. No Egyptian titulary is known for her. Berenice IV married twice. Additionally, marriage negotiations were conducted, probably betwe en the two marriages, with a former Seleucid king of Damascus, Philip II Barypus, which wer e terminated by order of A. Gabinius, governor of Syria. Berenice IV first married on an unknown date Seleucus Kybiosaktes, here identified as most li kely the second son of Antiochus X and Cleopatra Selene. The marriage was dissolved by his mu rder shortly after the wedding. Berenice IV second married, in mid 56, as his second wife, Archelaus I, high priest of Bellon a at Comana in Cappadocia. The marriage was terminated by his death in battle against the for ces of A. Gabinius, governor of Syria, in January/February 55. OR "EUERGETES II" (PHYSCON); PER-'O 170-163 BC, 145-116 BC PHILOMETER; PER-'O 181-164 BC, 163-145 BC Ptolemy VI Philometor 180-164 & 163-145 B.C. Ptolemaic Dynasty Ptolemy VI Philometor was the sixth ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. He was the son and succes sor of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, who died when Philometor was a very young boy. His mother died a t approximately four years after Philometor took the throne and he was under the control of h is guardians, Eulaeus and Lenaeus. His wife-sister was Cleopatra II and his younger brother w as Ptolemy VII [VIII] Euergetes II Physcon. In 164 BC, Philometor left Alexandria and went t o Rome where he pretended to be working-class. He waited here until the authorities came to h im. Physcon ruled in his absence and it was becoming intolerable. The Alexandrians soon wer e begging for Philometor to return to Alexandria. In May of 163, the two brothers agreed to s plit up the rule of Egypt. Physcon would rule the western province of Cyrenaica and Philometo r was ruler of Egypt. This lasted until Philometor's death in 145 BC.

Notes:

(SELENE) Cleopatra III & Ptolemy IX Soter II (Lathyros) 116-107 & 88-80 B.C. Cleopatra III & Ptolemy IX Soter II (Lathyros) were co-regents during the Ptolemaic Dynasty . Cleopatra III was the niece of Physcon (Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II) and was married to him w hile her mother was still his official wife. She bore Physcon two sons - Ptolemy IX Philometor Soter II (Lathyros) and Ptolemy X Alexande r I as well as three daughters, Cleopatra IV, Cleopatra Tryphaena, and Cleopatra Selene. In P hyscon's will he left the succession to Cleopatra and to whichever son she preferred. She hated Lathyros, but doted on the younger son Alexander. The Alexandrians wanted Lathyro s to be co-regent. He was then governor of Cyprus. Lathyros was brought back to Alexandria t o co-rule and Alexander was sent to Cyprus to replace Lathyros. Lathyros was married to Cleopatra IV, his sister, but his mother repudiated the marriage an d replaced her with Cleopatra Selene, who was Cleopatra IV's sister. Cleopatra IV went to Cyp rus where she tried to raise an army and to marry Ptolemy Alexander. sShe failed to marry him and moved on to Syria where she used her army as a dowry and marrie d Antiochus IX Cyzicenus who was son of Antiochus Sidetes and Cleopatra Thea. Cleopatra III f inally succeeded in driving out Lathyros in 107 BC when she accused him of trying to murder h er. He left behind his wife and his two sons. His brother returned from Cyprus and assumed the throne. Lathyros was in Cyprus during this t ime. After the death of Alexander in a naval battle, Lathyros, who was now in his mid-fifties , was brought back to Alexandria to try to put back together the Ptolemaic empire. He died a t the age of 62 and left no legitimate heir to the throne, both of his sons by Cleopatra Sele ne appear to have died at a young age. His daughter Cleopatra Berenice ruled alone for a whil e after his death. Cleopatra III & Alexander I 107-88 B.C. Ptolemaic Dynasty Cleopatra III & Alexander I were co-rulers of the Ptolemaic Dynasty after Cleopatra had drive n out her older son, Ptolemy IX Soter II (Lathyros), after accusing him of trying to kill her . Alexander had been the governor of Cyprus, but after Lathyros had been ousted, he returne d to Alexandria to rule with his mother. Not long after he came to rule, his mother soon gre w tired of him as well and forced him to flee from Alexandria. In 101, he returned under th e pretense of a reconciliation with his mother. He came back and had her assassinated. Alexan der was finally driven out of Egypt after selling off Alexander the Great's gold coffin to ra ise money. He willed his kingdom to Rome however, they could not claim their inheritance whil e he was still alive. It did allow him to gain favor with moneylenders in Rome. This did allo w him to finance a fleet. He was killed in a naval battle off Cyprus.
