Veda Irene Massey was born on March 7, 1952, to Leo Carl Massey Sr. and BettyLou (Sutliff) o f Boyne Falls, Mich. . Veda is preceded in death by her father, Leo, in 1992 and her mother, Betty Lou, in 2012. . Veda is survived by older brother, Leo Carl Massey Jr., and wife, Janet (Keltz,) of East J ordan, Mich.; younger sister, Kathy Lou (Massey) Gray, of Rogers City, Mich.; younger sister , Penney Lynne Massey, of Boyne Falls, Mich.; younger brother, Robert Joseph Massey, and wife , Janice (Egler), of Bellaire, Mich.; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephew s. Veda was a lifetime member of the Boyne Falls United Methodist Church. . Veda was a beloved daughter, sister and aunt to our whole family. She was also a dedicate d teacher and mentor to children of all ages for the 27 years she taught for the Vanderbilt P ublic Schools until poor health dictated an early retirement. For a majority of that time sh e worked with children with special needs from kindergarten through high school. Veda spent m any extra hours during her career coaching and mentoring special athletes preparing them fo r Special Olympic competition. Her gracious heart led her to foster parenting, tutoring and v olunteering (through church and her teaching sorority). Her love of reading and teaching le d her to volunteering for the school library after retirement. Although a quiet person, Veda was a person of strong convictions and was willing to work a nd fight for those convictions in many capacities (member of the school board, union office r and negotiator). Veda was a person with a multitude of interests and dreams. She loved learning new skill s and enjoyed crafting and needlework projects as well as scrapbooking and compiling family h istory. Every family member has received something in their lifetime specifically crafted fo r them from Veda, whether it be needlework ornaments, mittens, hats, scrapbooks, purses, nec k scarves, or jewelry. Each and every gift was crafted and given with love. Another love of Veda’s was traveling and she took every possible opportunity to travel an d explore throughout the United States, taking her mom on many of those adventures with her . Veda could find something interesting in even the most mundane of places and never hesitate d to share new finds with family and friends. Veda’s desire to explore new horizons started early. While finishing her university work a nd beginning her career, she decided she would like to teach in Alaska and started preparin g by taking flying lessons that would allow her to fly into some of the remote areas she ha d looked into for jobs. That dream never came to fruition, but it did not stop her from touch ing the lives of many children in a most positive and encouraging way. Veda leaves behind a strong legacy to those who knew and were cherished by her. She neve r let fear of the unknown hold her back or defeat her. Her strong faith and indomitable spiri t are her legacy. Sh e died at home surrounded by her family. Betty was the daughter of James W. Sutliff and Veda I.(Wesson) Sutliff, born May 19, 192 9 in Boyne City. On March 5, 1949, she married the love of her life, Leo C. Massey, and gav e birth to two sons and three daughters. Betty worked at Boyne Mountain, Boyne Products and l ater moved to Boyne Falls Public School working as a cook with her best friend Louise Magee . Betty enjoyed all type of stitchwork, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, traveling and baking, an d was well known for her cinnamon rolls. Betty loved children and spent as much time as she c ould with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was a member of the Boyne Falls Un ited Methodist Church. Betty was preceded on death by her parents, her husband Leo, three brothers and one siste r. Betty is survived by a sister, Irene Cellner of Charlevoix, a brother, Robert Sutliff of Eas t Jordan, five children, Carl (Janet) Massey, Veda Massey, Kathy (Gerry) Gray, Penney Massey , and Robert (Janice) Massey; as well as eleven grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildre n and one great-great-grandchild. . Visitation will be at the Boyne Falls United Methodist Church on September 22, 2012 from 9 :00 - 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service. They will then proceed to a graveside servi ce followed by a luncheon at the Fellowship Hall of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Boyn e Falls. Memorials can be presented to the Boyne Falls United Methodist Church or the Boyne Valley Pan try, both sent to P.O. Box 183, Boyne Falls, MI 49713.
