The Biographical Encyclopaedia of Ohio of the Nineteenth Century James M. Hoyt, LL. D. Lawye r and Capitalist, was born in Utica, New York, January 16th, 1815. He received a good educati on, and in 1834 graduated at Hamilton College, New York. On leaving college he began the stud y of law in Utica, but soon removed to Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1836 read law in the office o f Andrews & Foot. In the following year the law partnership of Andrews, Foot & Hoyt was forme d and continued for twelve years, when the appointment of Andrews to the bench of the Superio r Court of Cuyahoga necessitated his withdrawal. The firm of Foot & Hoyt continued until 1853 , when Mr. Hoyt withdrew from the practice of law and gave his whole time to the purchase an d sale of real estate in Cleveland and vicinity. His operations were heavy, large tracts in a nd around the city were purchased, divided into lots and sold for homesteads. About one thous and acres of city and suburban property were owned wholly, or jointly with others, and by hi m subdivided into lots and sold for settlement, and more than a hundred streets were opened a nd named by him. In all these transactions he was universally credited with the extreme of li berality and generosity towards those with whom he had transactions, and especially towards t he poor and those whom misfortune or sickness had unexpectedly placed in straitened circumsta nces. His uniform uprightness, scrupulous regard for truth and justice and honorable dealin g with his clients, secured for him, when practising law, the title of "the honest lawyer," a nd the same characteristics in his real estate dealings maintained the reputation won at th e bar. He united with the Baptist Church in Utica in 1835, and has since been a member of tha t denomination, and active in religious and moral causes. For twenty-six years he was the Sup erintendent of the Sabbath-school of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, of which he i s a member. He then resigned the superintendency of the school and became a teacher of a cong regational Bible class. Although never ordained a minister, for twenty years he preached at i ntervals, having been licensed for that purpose by the church with which he was connected. I n 1854 he was chosen President of the Ohio Baptist State Convention, and was annually for twe nty years elected to that position, presiding over anniversary meetings in nearly every cit y in the State of Ohio. He was chosen President of the American Baptist Home Mission Society , the national organization for missions in North America, and was re-elected annually unti l 1870, when he retired. For about eight years he was President of the Cleveland Bible Societ y, an auxiliary to the American Bible Society. In 1870 he was elected a member of the State B oard of Equalization, a body which, for high character, talent and practical business sense , has never been surpassed in the history of the State. As the appraisement of all the proper ty of the State went through the hands of the Board, the responsibility and labor were very g reat. But the Board gave general satisfaction. In 1873 he was appointed a member of the Cleve land Board of Public Improvements. In 1870 the degree of LL. D. was conferred on him by Denni son University, of Granville, Ohio. In physical science, history and belles-lettres he was we ll read. His contributions to periodical literature and his addresses attracted marked attent ion. The Christian Review for October, 1863, contained a finished, analytical and exhaustiv e article on the subject of "Miracles" from his pen. He has ever been noted for his good work s, whether religious or patriotic. In 1836 he was married in New York to Mary Ella Bisbee. O f the six children born of this union five are now living. The eldest, Rev. James Madison Hoyt was but 20 years o f age when he came to Cleveland fresh from his graduation at Hamilton College, and entered a s a student the office of Andrews & Foote, two of the most prominent lawyers of Cleveland, bo th of whom succeeded to the judicial bench. This is mentioned because not long afterward the y took the young man into partnership with them, which indicates that he must have been excep tionally bright and unusually promising for his age. . Mr. Hoyt was the son of David P. Hoy t and Mary Barnum Hoyt, who removed to Utica, N. Y., from Connecticut in 1820: There was a la rge exodus of New England families into western New York about that time, and a few years lat er many of these families who had settled in or near Utica, again sold out and removed to Cle veland or its vicinity. Several of the best known pioneers of this city came here from Utica. . After Sherlock J. Andrews became a judge of common pleas, the firm name of Andrews & Foot e was changed to Foote & Hoyt and in the same year, 1836, Mr. Hoyt made an eastern trip, retu rning with a bride, Miss Mary E. Beebe, daughter of Alexander M. Bebee, LL. D. . Their firs t home was on Chestnut street; afterward they purchased a home on Huron Road south of Prospec t Ave. and near the Huron street Hospital where they lived many years; finally they removed t o Euclid Ave. where they both died. Although a successful lawyer with a large clientage, Mr . Hoyt was not contented to practice his profession. It may have been too exacting for a min d inclined to metaphysics, and to deep religious revery. Therefore, after 10 years of law h e relinquished it for an occupation that gave him more time to enjoy the things he most care d for. He entered the real-estate business, bought several of the original ten-acre lots surr ounding the city, allotted, and sold them for residential purposes. With Col. Hiram Wellman h e became interested in the growth and development of Ohio City, now the West Side. It is clai med that he opened up over 100 new streets in the city. . He was an ardent member of the Bapt ist church and a lay preacher of that denomination ; supplying vacant pulpits either in the c ity or in surrounding towns. For 26 consecutive years he was the superintendent of the Firs t Baptist Church Sunday School, loved and revered by. two generations of its children. He wa s also an interesting and valued contributor to leading reviews. He traveled abroad and publi shed in book form his experiences and impressions of foreign lands. . Mr. Hoyt's eldest son w as a Baptist minister who was settled over churches in Pittsfield, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Broo klyn, N. Y. The second son was named for James M. Colgate of New York City who had married Mr . Hoyt's sister. The eldest daughter of the family, a beautiful young girl, died in 1854. Lyd ia Hoyt Farmer was a bright, ambitious woman who gave her later years to the pursuits of lite rature. She had several books published. James H. Hoyt a lawyer of the city was perhaps the m ost gifted member of the family. He is a brilliant public orator, and his after-dinner speech es have become celebrated throughout the state of Ohio and elsewhere. . The children of Jame s and Mary Beebe Hoyt: Rev.
