BIOGRAPHY: Oscar Francis Curtis was born Sunday, the 2nd of June 1572, at Ottovllle, Putnam County, Ohio, the son of Julius and Philothe Eudora (Townaon) Curtis. He was born at home and Dr. George Skinner attended the birth. Robert A. and Nancy J. (Dunlap) Walls, witnessed the birth certificate. (Volume 15, page 67, record 15, #2858) Robert A. Walls was the son of Jacob and Angeline (Curtis) Walls, Oscar met and married, seventeen year old, Rebecca Jane Baldwin, the daughter of Joshua and Sarah Elizabeth (Davis) Baldwin, on the 14th of April 1894, Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio, by Austin Courts, Justice of the Peace. (Volume 5, page 138). Their first son was born in Van wert County and died at a little over one year of age. The second son, Ernest was born in 1897, Pauiding County, and the twins, were born in 1899. in Greensburg Township, Putnam County. The 1900 census shows Oscar living in Greensburg Township, Putnam County, Ohio, with his wife, Ernest and the twins. John A. Close, owned the house. By 1902, was living in Latty Township, Faulding County, Ohio, In may of 1903, waa in Blue Creek Township, Futnam County, Ohio, In 1909 the children attended Sharloe Street School in Paulding, Ohio. The 1910 census shows them residing in Pauiding County, Ohio, Oscar was a farmer most of his life, but also worked as a lumber man and carpenter, and brought his family to Plymouth Township, Wayne County, Michigan, (Sand Hill on Cherry Hill Road) in 1914, by the way of horse and wagon- At this time doctors still traveled by horse and buggy, payments for his services were meals, chickens and pigs. Oscar bought a farm from Mr- Byrd on Hanford and Cherry Hill, where the children attended school. The Detroit Edison Company installed boulevard lights from Mills Street, down Main and South Main Street, on Penniman Avenue to Harvey Street to Mill in the fall of 1914; South Main Street from Ann Arbor Street to the village limits in the summer of 1922. The monument in Kellogg Park facing Main Street was the gift of H. E. Bradner in July of 1917, and unveiled Sunday, S September 1917, The Post Office was made second class on 1 July 1914, City carrier service started October of 1917. The Riverside Cemetery was established by ordinance on 3 February 1880. It consisted of twenty acres and cost $1000.. Several more acres have been added. The population of Plymouth in 1922 was 3,000. In 1919, Oscar and family, resided on York Street, and 1919 on the Shirto's Farm. The 1920 census show Oscar residing on Ann Arbor Road, Plymouth Township, Wayne County, Michigan, he is a laborer for the Rail Road. In 1921 they resided on the Emerine Farm, Flora and Carl lived with them for a month, after their marriage. Oscar then bought a home at 324 Ann Street, Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, where he remained until his death, (His. telephone number was 1096J, there was no dialing you had to get the operator and ask her to ring the number,). He and his children were members of the Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Plymouth Grange, On their 30th Anniversary, Oscar bought. Rebecca a wedding ring, with matching ear rings, from C. G. Draper Store, for $6.60. Which at that time, 1924, was extravagant. Oscar lost his devoted wife, Rebecca Jane (Baldwin) Curtis, on the l2th of December 1930, Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, at age 54 years,. 6 months, and 1 day. Rebecca had been ailing for several years with tuberculosis. Services were held at Schrader Brothers Funeral Home and burial took place at Riverside cemetery, near Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan. Rebecca was born the l1th of July 1876, in Fayette County, Ohio, Oscar joined the Park Commission in 1926, where he took care of nuraery trees and supervised the building of rustic bridges. He has employed his knowledge of trees and rural scenes into the design of hia hobby products. He loved children and life in general, he often took his grand children to Phoenix Park were he worked as a caretaker after giving up farming. He would prepare hot lunches for them on his little hot plate in a small room adjacent to the comfort station. He would keep them busy picking up bottle caps at a pay of one cent each, and other little odd jobs. He retired in 1945, at age 73, from the Wayne County Park Commission, He spent many an hour in his workshop adjoining his garage, making wooden toys and furniture for his grand children and shadow boxes, what-not shelves, thread racks, and such for others. Stepping into the quaint workshop, was an experience in itself. An array of carpenter's tools such as lathe, jig and bench saws, drill press, sandec and shelves of equipment stretching from floor to ceiling. Rows of artist's brushes stood upright on one shelf, while drawers under the workbench disclosed further hiding places for such equipment as nails, hammers, and other tools. Oscar enjoyed fishing, both at a amall lake or in the Gulf of Mexico. He had a beautiful tulip garden with a large birdhouae in the center, which he made. His peonies were another pride of his, and he also cared for a vegetable garden on the outskirts of town. One of his favorite treats was to cut one of his home grown cantaloupes In half and scoop out the center and fill it with ice cream, and we ate until we could not eat any more. He had a big cherry tree in his yard which he hired his grandchildren to pick, their pay being as many cherries as they could eat. He owned a 1936 Chevrolet Car, and drove until he almost eighty years of age- He was a very healthy, active man and was loved and respected by all. Oscar was in possession of the Curtia ledger and passed it. on to hia oldest son, Leonard. In the ledger he made entries of his children's birth, marriages and death's. He also recorded his favorite Hymn. It is as follows: The Sun above Is Gleaming is not the Sun for me, though joyful Is its .beaming and beautiful to see, but there's a Son of Righteousness who saves and cheers by his grace All Capians on us streaming, o that's the Son for s". The Kings and Lords of Nations is not the king for me, To loss their highest station to mean their dignity, The Kings of Kings and Lords of .Lord's are mighty in his ways and words, The words of his Salvation, o that the King for me, the war that heroes fight is not the wsr for me, The war my hearts delights in shall end in Victory. Tis not a war of flesh and blood, I fight for heavan and fight for god. A Kingdom with my Eights In, Oh that's the war for me. This house of death and nrourning is not tho house for me, Where all to dust are Earning in tears of agony, But there's a house not made with bands that ever stood and ever stands. Beyond this worlds last burning, oh that's the house for roe. This land of sin and sorrow is not the land for me, Where troubles of times borrow from dying company, The inrnorcal land Is far away. I'll enter one some bright day, That day may be tomorrow. Oh that's the land for me. He made a copy of the ledger and of the records and gave it to hifl son, Milliam. At age seventy, he would be described as five foot, two inches tall, one hundred and sixty pounds, balding gray half, brown eyed, medium complexion and left handed by nature. He wore corrective glasses. Oscar had a stroke, 28 November 1956, while visiting his sons in Florida, He fell into a coma and was flown home. He reniained in a coma at Ridgewood Hospital until his death. Oscar deceased on the 20 December 1956, in Ypailanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan, at 84 years. 6 months, and I8 days. Services were held at the Schrader Funeral Home, the Reverent Melbourne T, Johnson, officiating. Burial took place at the Riverside Cemetery, outside of Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, on the 22 December 1956- Pallbearer were T. L. Rodman, George, Joehua and Hiram Baldwin, Oscar and Charles Michaels. He is buried next to his wife. Rebecca, and three grandchildren, Kenneth, Margery and Harold Rorabacher, children of Flora.
