Spouse: Children: QUICK SKETCH King Obedas I stopped the Maccabean expansion to the east, defeating Alexander Jannaeus. Th e Nabateans, a loose tribe, or tribes, of Arabians, controlled what is now Jordan, Sinai, an d the Negev. They also controlled Beersheba, which was the southern boundary of Palestine. Th eir loose ‘empire’ extended to the north as far as Damascus. Since they controlled the Incens e Route, they became very wealthy, with their capital at Petra. The Nabateans kept no records, so we have only a few inscriptions and stories from the Bibl e to reconstruct their history. There were several kings named Obedas, and generally we can n ot tell them apart. (http://www.ancientroute.com/people/Obedas1_i.htm) Obodas (Avdat) I Obodas I ascended the throne in 90 BCE and defeated Alexander Jannaeus in a battle on the Gol an Heights-probably the key to the Nabatean return to the Negev. The town of Oboda (Avdat) wa s named for the victor, who was worshiped as a god even after his death. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Antigonus Family Tree (http://www.ancientroute.com/Trees/antigonias.htm) Rodogune, Rhodogune, Rhodogyne, or Rodogyne Daughter of Phraatês king of Parthia. She married Demetrius Nicanor (the husband of Cleopatr a queen of Syria, q.v.), while in captivity.—Rowe: The Royal Convert (1708). (P. Corneille has a tragedy on the subject, entitled Rodogune, 1646.) (http://www.bibliomania.com/2/3/174/1128/14957/1/frameset.html) Rhodogune From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Rhodogune was the queen of ancient Parthia in the second century B.C.E. She was informed o f a revolt while preparing for her bath, and vowed not to bathe or brush her hair until the r evolt was ended. She immediately went to her horse and rode out to the head of her army. Sh e directed a long war and won it, and was depicted with long, disheveled hair because of he r adherence to her vow. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodogune) (Corneille 1965, 48-9) Corneille first dealt with this challenge in [??], where matricide i s introduced as a possibility only to be rejected indignantly by virtuous sons. The play dram atizes an obscure incident from Appian's . That in constructing a tragedy from this obscure a nd unpromising material Corneille had the Electra plays in mind is proved not only by numerou s plot parallels but also by the fact that in his criticism of Sophocles' he praised Rodogun e for avoiding the faults of the ancient tragedy. The plot of the play thoroughly observes Corneille's maxim stated in the preface to that ‘l e sujet d'une belle tragédie doit n'être pas vraisemblable’. Demetrius, the king of Syria, ha ving been captured by the king of Parthia, his wife Cléopatre, believing him dead, marries ag ain, whereupon Demetrius proposes marriage to his captor's daughter, Rodogune, and sets out t o conquer his former kingdom. Cléopatre, whose second husband has conveniently died in anothe r Parthian campaign, ambushes and kills Demetrius. Rodogune is taken prisoner and treated wit h scrupulous but deceptive courtesy. These events precede the action proper, which begins o n the day when Cléopatre will reveal to her twin sons Antiochus and Seleucus which of them i s the elder and therefore the heir to the throne. It goes without saying that the sons have f allen in love with Rodogune and that each offers the other the crown in exchange for the prin cess. But they realize that only a king is worthy of Rodogune and that therefore crown and pr incess are indivisible. They are thrown into the utmost confusion when Cléopatre tells them t hat she will declare the murderer of Rodogune her heir:‘ La mort de Rodogune en nommerà l'aîn é ’ 2.3.645. Their confusion is compounded when they take their troubles to Rodogune and ar e told by her that as the former fiancée of their father she is duty-bound to pursue his reve nge and that, regardless of her feelings, her hand will belong to the son who has the courag e to avenge his father:‘ Appelez ce devoir haine, rigueur, colère; / Pour gagner Rodogune, i l faut venger un père’ 3.4. 1043-4. The princes of course do not for a moment consider Rodogune's proposal. In choosing between t heir love and their obligation to a mother, even so wicked a mother, there can only be one pa th of honour. Their steadfastness becomes a source of new dangers. Revolted at her sons' disl oyalty, Cléopatre now turns against them. She murders Seleucus and plans to poison Antiochu s at the wedding ceremony with Rodogune. Antiochus is about to drink the poison offered to hi m in the wedding cup when a messenger arrives with the news that Seleucus had died, in his ow n ambiguous words by ‘une main qui nous fut bien chère’ 5.4.1643. Cléopatre accuses Rodogun e of the murder, and Rodogune warns Antiochus against drinking from the wedding cup. Antiochu s remains in a state of honourable irresolution that is almost fatal to him. For Cléopatre, s eeing that her game is up, would rather die than not avenge herself on her son. She drinks th e poison in the hope that it will not take effect until he too has drunk. A slight delay frus trates this last plan and saves the life of Antiochus. This suicide of Cléopatre is a marke d departure from Appian's account, where Cléopatre is forced by Antiochus to drink the poiso n she had prepared for him. Orestes parallels govern much of the action in Rodogune, and the possibility of exploring the m and entering into a literary competition with illustrious predecessors was a major reason f or Corneille's choice of his subject. The concluding tableau of the play articulates this cha llenge most clearly: it may be seen as a transformation of the barbarous brutality of Oreste s into civilized behaviour. Antiochus has overwhelming evidence of his mother's guilt; moreov er, he has ample reason to fear for his immediate safety. To do nothing in such a situation c eases to be filial obedience and becomes a kind of heroic folly. Nonetheless, Antiochus doe s nothing. This modern Orestes buries his head in the sand because even to suspect his mother 's actions strikes him as an act of criminal disobedience. Such loyalty is rewarded by chanc e (or destiny) as Cléopatre overreaches herself, and the poison takes effect in time. Her dea th agony is undeniable evidence of her guilt: she is dying from the poison designed for him . Finally relieved from the necessity of undertaking anything against her, Antiochus rushes t o his mother's help: ‘N'importe, elle est ma mère, il faut la secourir ’ 5.4.1810. And he rem ains incapable of hostile sentiments even in the face of her dying curse on him, exclaiming h elplessly: ‘Ah

vivez pour changer cette haine en amour’ 5.4.1825. (www.stoa.org/hopper/ text.jsp?doc=Stoa:text:2003.01.0001:chapter=5 - 127k - )
