Short Biography
(Photo retouches, courtesy of Philip H. Hendershot & Roger D. Hoyt -Emmo (Tiney), Harland. Helen, Earnest Hoyt, c1909) Earnest Edward Hoyt, b. March 30, 1881, in Elm Hall, Gratiot Co,. Michigan, of George G. & Elizabeth Adellia (Gerould) Hoyt followed his parents to Curtisville (Mack City, Michigan, then back South to Stanton, Ionoa Co., MI, and after the Stanton Rolling Mill burned in 1896, he followed his parents to Remus, Mecosta Co., Michigan, becoming one of the brothers listed in the George G. Hoyt & Sons, Flour/Grist Mill. Earnest met Emmo Winifred Tiney, and married on August 12, 1902 in Burkey, Richfield Center, Ohio, moved after 1903, where in Remus, they lost their first child, Marcus Browning Hoyt, he is buried in Wambolt Cem, S. of Remus, Mi., (as did Hugh P. & Katherine E. (Hoag) Hoyt in 1899). Earnest worked for approximately 3 years in the Pinckney Mill in Pinckney, Livingston Co., Michigan. While his older brother Hugh P. Hoyt moved to Deerfield, Lenawee Co., Michigan about the same time. After brother, Hugh P. Hoyt, living in Deerfield, Mi, was hired by William Heyden to work for him at his Heyden Mill, after his son, Perry Heyden declined to work in the family business, Hugh P. was hired in 1905, as Head Miller and called for his brother, Earnest to help him out in the Heyden Mill, probably Emmo was with child at the time, and both H.P. & E. E.began a life-long family milling partnership. Earnest & Emmo Hoyt, had their 2nd child, Earnest "Harland" Hoyt born on September 18, 1905 in Tecumseh. Two more children would be born in Tecumseh for Earnest & Emmo Hoyt. Emmo Katherine Hoyt died same day as birth on December 3, 1907, and Helene Tiney Hoyt was born on March 29, 1909. The last child was born in Clinton, Michigan, George E. Hoyt, born March 21, 1924, and died on day, March 21, 1924. They might have had the 3 child that died early at birth might have had a 'bleeder' disease of hemophilia type.* Earnest E. Hoyt also became iterested in community affairs, and became a village president, The Clinton Village Presidents are listed in the "Village of Clinton: A history1829-1979" starting in 1914. Listed is Earnest E. Hoyt,1921-1923.^ Earnest and Emmo Hoyt lived at this home through Emmo's death in 1960. We Hoyt sons of Paul & Pauline Hoyt, as children, came over many times as they lived just1 block from our home at 319 Clark St., and helped Emmo with clearing the sidewalks of snow, and mowing the lawn, after Earnest died in the Atlas Mill accident in 1952. I rememb3r Aunt Emmo at our dinner table at Thanksgiving. Earnest just had to walk 100' to his work at the Atlas Mill. My father, Paul M. Hoyt walked about 300' to the mill from Clark St. & Hugh H. Hoyt lived up the same street at 309 W. Franklin St. Below is Emmo W. (Tiney) Hoyt's mother portrait colorized. Ant Earnest E. & Emmo's home in Clinton, MI.
