Notes:

Henry I of England From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Henry I of England (c.1068 ? 1 December 1135), called Henry Beauclercbecause of his scholarl y interests, was the fourth son of William theConqueror. He reigned as King of England from 1 100 to 1135, succeedinghis brother, William II Rufus. Henry also was known by the nickname"Li on of Justice", due to the refinements which he brought about inthe rudimentary administrativ e and legislative machinery of the time. He seized power after the death of William II, which occurred(conveniently) during the absenc e of his older brother Robert Curthoseon the Crusades. His reign is noted for his opportunistic political skills, theaforementioned improvements i n the machinery of government, theintegration of the divided Anglo-Saxon and Normans within h is kingdom, his reuniting of the dominions of his father, and his controversial(although well- founded) decision to name his daughter as his heir. Early life Henry was born between May 1068 and May 1069, probably in Selby,Yorkshire in England. His mot her, Queen Matilda of Flanders, wasdescended from the Saxon King Alfred the Great (but not th rough themain West Saxon royal line). Matilda named Henry after her uncle, KingHenry I of Fra nce. As the youngest son of the family, he was mostlikely expected to become a bishop and wa s given extensive schoolingfor a young nobleman of that time period. William of Malmesburyass erts that Henry once remarked that an illiterate king was a crownedass. He was probably the f irst Norman ruler to be fluent in theEnglish language. His father William, upon his death in 1087, bequeathed his dominionsto his three remaining so ns (third son Richard having died previously)in the following manner: Robert received the Duchy of Normandy William received the Kingdom of England Henry received 5,000 pounds of silver Orderic Vitalis reports that King William declared to Henry: "You inyour own time will have a ll the dominions I have acquired and begreater than both your brothers in wealth and power." Henry played his brothers off against each other. Eventually, wary ofhis devious manouevering , they acted together and signed an accessiontreaty which effectively barred Henry from bot h thrones, stipulatingthat if either died without an heir, the two dominions of their fatherw ould be reunited under the surviving brother. Seizing the throne of England When William II was killed by an arrow whilst hunting on 2 August1100, Robert was returning f rom the First Crusade. His absence, alongwith his poor reputation among the Norman nobles, al lowed Henry toseize the keys of the royal hoard at Winchester. He was accepted asking by th e leading barons and was crowned three days later on 5August at Westminster. He secured his p osition among the nobles by anact of political appeasement, issuing the Charter of Liberties , whichis considered a forerunner of the Magna Carta. ] First marriage On 11 November 1100 Henry married Edith, daughter of King Malcolm IIIof Scotland. Since Edit h was also the niece of Edgar Atheling and thegreat-granddaughter of Edmund Ironside, the mar riage united the Normanline with the old English line of kings. The marriage greatlydisplease d the Norman barons, however, and as a concession to theirsensibilities Edith changed her nam e to Matilda upon becoming queen. The other side of this coin, however, was that Henry, by din t of hismarriage, became far more acceptable to the Anglo-Saxon populace. William of Malmesbury describes Henry thus: "He was of middle stature, greater than the small , but exceeded by the very tall; his hair wasblack and set back upon the forehead; his eyes m ildly bright; hischest brawny; his body fleshy." Conquest of Normandy In 1101, the following year, Robert Curthose attempted to seize thecrown by invading England . In the Treaty of Alton, Robert agreed torecognize Henry as King of England and return peace fully to Normandy, upon receipt of an annual sum of 2000 marks, which Henry proceeded topay. In 1105, to eliminate the continuing threat from Robert and to obviatethe drain on his fisca l resources, Henry led an expeditionary forceacross the English Channel. Battle of Tinchebray On the morning of the 28 September 1106, exactly 40 years afterWilliam had landed in England , the decisive battle between his twosons, Robert Courthose and Henry Beauclerc took place i n the smallvillage of Tinchebray. This combat was totally unexpected andunprepared. Henry an d his army was marching south from Barfleur ontheir way to Domfront and Robert was marching w ith his army fromFalaise on their way to Mortain. They met at the crossroads atTinchebray an d the running battle which ensued was spread out overseveral kilometres. The site where mos t of the fighting took place isthe village playing field today. Towards evening Robert trie d toretreat but was captured by Henry's men at a place three Km North ofTinchebray where a fa rm named "Prise" (taken) stands today on the D22road. The tombstones of three knights are nea rby in the same road. King of England and Duke of Normandy After Henry had defeated his brother's Norman army at Tinchebray heimprisoned Robert, initial ly in the Tower of London, subsequently atDevizes Castle and later at Cardiff. One day whil e out riding Robertattempted to escape from Cardiff but his horse was bogged down in aswamp a nd he was recaptured. To prevent further escapes Henry had hiseyes burnt out. Henry appropria ted the Duchy of Normandy as apossession of England, and reunited his father's dominions. He attempted to reduce difficulties in Normandy by marrying his eldestson, William, to the da ughter of Fulk V, Count of Anjou, then aserious enemy. Eight years later, after William's unt imely death, amuch more momentous union was made between Henry's daughter Matildaand Fulk's s on Geoffrey Plantagenet, which eventually resulted in theunion of the two realms under the Pl antagenet kings. Activities as a King Henry's need for finance to consolidate his position led to anincrease in the activities of c entralized government. As king, Henrycarried out social and judicial reforms, including: issuing the Charter of Liberties restoring laws of King Edward the Confessor. Henry was also known for some brutal acts. He once threw a traitorousburgher named Conan Pila tus from the tower of Rouen; the tower wasknown from then on as "Conan's Leap". In another in stance that tookplace in 1119, King Henry's son-in-law, Eustace de Pacy, and RalphHarnec, th e constable of Ivry, exchanged their children as hostages. When Eustace blinded Harnec's son , Harnec demanded vengeance. KingHenry allowed Harnec to blind and mutiliate Eustace's two da ughters, who were also Henry's own grandchildren. Eustace and his wife,Juliane, were outrage d and threatened to rebel. Henry arranged to meethis daughter at a parlay at Breteuil, only f or Juliane to draw acrossbow and attempt to assassinate her father. She was captured andconfi ned to the castle, but escaped by leaping from a window into themoat below. Some years late r Henry was reconciled with his daughterand son-in-law. Legitimate children He had two children by Edith-Matilda, who died in 1118: Matilda, born February 1102, and William Adelin, born November 1103. Disaster struck when William, his only legitimate son, perished in thewreck of the White Shi p on 25 November 1120 off the coast of Normandy. Also among the dead were two of Henry's illeg itimate children, as wellas a niece, Lucia-Mahaut de Blois. Henry's grieving was intense, and the succession was in crisis. Second marriage On 29 January 1121, he married Adeliza, daughter of Godfrey I ofLeuven, Duke of Lower Lothari ngia and Landgrave of Brabant, but therewere no children from this marriage. Left without mal e heirs, Henrytook the unprecedented step of making his barons swear to accept hisdaughter Em press Matilda, widow of Henry V, the Holy Roman Emperor, ashis heir. Death and legacy Henry visited Normandy in 1135 to see his young grandsons, thechildren of Matilda and Geoffre y. He took great delight in hisgrandchildren, but soon quarreled with his daughter and son-in -law andthese disputes led him to tarry in Normandy far longer than heoriginally planned. Henry died of food poisoning from eating "a surfeit of lampreys," ofwhich he was excessivel y fond, in December 1135 at Lyons-la-forêt inNormandy. He was buried at Reading Abbey, whic h he had foundedfourteen years before. (No trace of his tomb has survived and theprobable sit e is now covered by a car park.) Although Henry's barons had sworn allegiance to his daughter as theirqueen, her sex and her r emarriage into the House of Anjou, an enemy ofthe Normans, allowed Henry's nephew Stephen o f Blois to come toEngland and claim the throne with popular support. The struggle between the Empress and Stephen resulted in a long civilwar known as the Anarchy . The dispute was eventually settled byStephen's naming of Matilda's son, Henry, as his hei r in 1153. Illegitimate Children King Henry is famed for holding the record for the largest number ofacknowledged illegitimat e children born to any English king, with thenumber being around 20 or 25. He had many mistre sses, and identifyingwhich mistress is the mother of which child is difficult. Hisillegitimat e offspring for whom there is documentation are: Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester. His mother was probably a member ofthe Gai family. Maud FitzRoy, married Conan III, Duke of Brittany Constance FitzRoy, married Roscelin de Beaumont Mabel FitzRoy, married William III Gouet Aline FitzRoy, married Matthieu I of Montmorency William de Tracy, died shortly after King Henry. Gilbert FitzRoy, died after 1142. His mother may have been a sister ofWalter de Gand. Emma, born circa 1138; married Gui de Laval, Lord Laval. Eustacie, born circa 1084. Married William Gouet II, Lord Montmirial. ] With Edith Matilda du Perche, married Count Rotrou II of Perche, perished in thewreck of the White Ship. With Ansfride Ansfride was born circa 1070. She was married Sir Anskill of AbingdonAbbey. Juliane de Fontevrault, married Eustace de Pacy. She tried to shoother father with a crossbo w after King Henry allowed her two youngdaughters to be blinded. Fulk FitzRoy, a monk at Abingdon. Richard of Lincoln, perished in the wreck of the White Ship. With Sibyl Corbet Lady Sybilla Corbet of Alcester was born in 1077 in Alcester,Warwickshire, England. She marri ed Herbert FitzHerbert, son of Herbert"the Chamberlain" of Winchester and Emma de Blois. Sh e died after 1157and was also known as Adela (or Lucia) Corbet. Sybil was definitelymother o f Sybil and Rainald, possibly also of William and Rohese. Somesources suggest that there wa s another daughter by this relationship,Gundred, but it appears that she was thought as suc h because she was asister of Reginald de Dunstanville but it appears that that wasanother per son of that name who was not related to this family. Sybilla of England, married King Alexander I of Scotland. William Constable, born before 1105. Married Alice (Constable); diedafter 1187. Reginald de Dunstanville, 1st Earl of Cornwall. Gundred of England (1114 ? 1146), married 1130 Henry de la Pomeroy, son of Joscelin de la Pome rai. Rohese of England, born 1114; married Henry de la Pomeroy. With Edith FitzForne Robert FitzEdith, Lord Okehampton, (1093 ? 1172) married Dame Maudd'Avranches du Sap. Adeliza FitzEdith. Appears in charters with her brother Robert. With Princess Nest Nesta verch Rhys of Deheubarth was born circa 1073 at Dynevor,Llandyfeisant, Carmarthenshire , Wales. She was married first to Geraldof Windsor (Geraldus FitzOther de Windsor, son of Wal ter FitzOther ofWindsor, Keeper of the Forest and Gwladys verch Rhywallon), in 1095.Later, af ter several other liaisons and illegitimate children, shemarried Stephen of Cardigan, Constab le of Cardigan Date of deathunknown, but Stephen was Constable in 1136. Henry FitzRoy, died 1157. With Isabel de Beaumont Isabel (Elizabeth) de Beaumont (after 1102 ? after 1172), daughter ofRobert de Beaumont, sist er of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl ofLeicester. She married Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Pem broke, in1130. She was also known as Isabella de Meulan. Isabel Hedwig of England, born circa 1120. Matilda FitzRoy, abbess of Montvilliers. Henry I (born 1068, ruled 1100-35). The youngest son of William theConqueror was born in Engl and. His nickname, Beauclerc, which means"good scholar," was given him because of his fine ed ucation. He seizedthe crown in the year 1100, when his brother King William II waskilled i n a hunting accident and his brother Robert, duke of Normandy, who was next in the line of suc cession, was absent on a crusade At hisaccession Henry I issued the famous Charter of Liberti es, which, overa hundred years later, was used as the basis of Magna Carta, thefoundation o f the liberties of the Anglo-Saxon world. He also favoredthe church in order to gain its back ing against the claims of hisbrother Robert to the English throne. The Charter of Liberties helped gain Henry the support of the nobles. He conciliated the Engli sh, conquered by his father, by marryingMatilda, who was the daughter of King Malcolm III o f Scotland and whowas descended from the Anglo-Saxon kings. The support of the commonpeople w as assured by the justice he administered through the King'sCourt. Henry's only son, Willia m Aetheling, was drowned in 1120 whenthe White Ship sank in the English Channel. According t o legend, theking never smiled again. The accident left his daughter Matilda, widowof the Hol y Roman emperor Henry V, and his nephew Stephen contestantsfor the throne at his death. Henry I (of England) Henry I (of England) (1068-1135), third Norman king of England(1100-1135), fourth son of Will iam the Conqueror. Henry was born inSelby. On the death of his brother William II in 1100, He nry tookadvantage of the absence of another brother- Robert, who had a priorclaim to the thro ne- to seize the royal treasury and have himselfcrowned king at Westminster. By defeating Rob ert, who was Duke ofNormandy, at Tinchebray, France, in 1106, Henry also won Normandy.Henry d esignated his daughter Matilda as his heiress. After his deathin 1135, however, Henry's nephe w, Stephen of Blois, usurped thethrone, plunging the country into a protracted civil war tha t endedwith the accession of Matilda's son, Henry II, in 1154.
