The provident king, bearing inmin d the saying of the bold Curio to Caesar about the business of war,"No more delay; what's rip e is ill deferred," on hearing theburgesses' came immediately to Breteuil and, finding that t he gateswere readily opened for him, entered the town. He thanked the loyalinhabitants for th e fealty they had shown, and forbade his knights totake any plunder there. Then he besieged t he castle in which hisimpudent daughter had shut herself up. Juliana was now extremely anxious and unsure what to do. She wascertain that her father, know ing the situation, had arrived in a rageagainst her and would not raise the siege now in plac e around thecastle until he had triumphed. Nevertheless, as Solomon says, 'Thereis no wickedn ess like a woman's wickedness,'(10) and in the end,plotting to raise her hand against the Lor d's anointed, shetreacherously asked to speak to her father. The king, ignorant of thewoman' s trick, came to meet with her, while his accursed child hopedto murder him. She had a cross- bow already cocked and shot a bolt ather father, but God protected him and she missed. The ki ng immediatelyordered that the castle drawbridge be destroyed, so that no one couldenter or l eave. Juliana, seeing that she was completely surrounded andthat no one was going to help her , surrendered the castle to the king,but could could not persuade him to allow her free depar ture. Indeedby the king's order she was forced to leap down from the top of thewall, with n o bridge or support, and fell ignominiously, with barebuttocks, into the depths of the moat . This happened at the beginningof Lent, in the third week of February, when the castle moa t was fullto overflowing with winter rains, and the frozen waters naturallystruck numbing col d into the tender flesh of the fallen woman. Theunlucky female warrior shamefully extracted h erself from thepredicament as best she could and, withdrawing to her husband who wasthen at P acy, gave him a realistic account of her unpleasantexperience. The king summoned the burgesse s, praised them forpreserving their fealty, rewarded them with gifts, promised more, andentru sted the castle of Breteuil to their care. Later, seeing all would soon be lost, Eustace and Juliana threwthemselves on the king's mercy . Eustace and his wife Juliana consulted friends, and on the advice ofthose friends they hurrie d to the siege, entered the king's tentbarefoot, and fell at his feet. The king, taken by sur prise, said tothem, 'Why have you, who have provoked me with so many injuries, daredto approa ch me without a safe conduct?' To which Eustace replied, 'Youare my natural lord. Therefore , my lord, I come to you without fear tooffer my service loyally to you, and to make whateve r restitution formy misdeeds you in your compassion may judge to be fitting.' Friendswere pre sent to intercede for the king's son-in-law. Richard, theking's son, also pleaded his sister' s cause. Mercy, indeed, softenedthe king's heart towards his daughter and son-in-law, and h e grew morebenevolent. So, pacified, the father-in-law said to his son-in-law,'Juliana may re turn to Pacy, and you shall come with me to Rouen andthere hear what is my pleasure.' The kin g's command was obeyed withoutdelay, and the king addressed Eustace in this way, 'In exchang e forthe honor of Breteuil, which I have given to your kinsman Ralph theBreton, whom I have f ound most loyal and faithful against my enemiesin times of great need, I will give you an ann ual payment of threehundred marks of silver in England.' Afterwards Eustace Fortified Pacywit h walls and watch-towers, and lived for more than twenty years,enjoying great wealth. Julian a some years later abandoned theself-indulgent life she had led for the religious life and, b ecoming anun, served the Lord God in the new abbey of Fontevrault.
