Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester (c. 1170 – 3 November 1219) (or Saieur di Quinci[1]) w as one of the leaders of the baronial rebellion against King John of England, and a major fig ure in both the kingdoms of Scotland and England in the decades around the turn of the twelft h and thirteenth centuries. Scottish Upbringing . Saer de Quincy's immediate background was in the Scottish kingdom: his father, Robert de Quin cy, was a knight in the service of king William the Lion, and his mother Orabilis was the hei ress of the lordship of Leuchars in Fife (see below). His rise to prominence in England cam e through his marriage to Margaret, the younger sister of Robert de Beaumont, 4th Earl of Lei cester: but it is probably no coincidence that her other brother was the de Quincys' powerfu l Fife neighbour, Roger de Beaumont, Bishop of St Andrews. In 1204, Earl Robert died, leavin g Margaret as co-heiress to the vast earldom along with her elder sister. The estate was spli t in half, and after the final division was ratified in 1207, de Quincy was made Earl of Winc hester. Earl of Winchester . Following his marriage, de Quincy became a prominent military and diplomatic figure in Englan d. There is no evidence of any close alliance with King John, however, and his rise to import ance was probably due to his newly acquired magnate status and the family connections that un derpinned it. Seal of Robert Fitzwalter(d.1235). So close was the alliance between both men that Robert's s eal shows the arms of de Quincy on a separate shield before his horse . One man with whom he does seem to have developed a close personal relationship is his cousin , Robert Fitzwalter (d. 1235). They are first found together in 1203, as co-commanders of th e garrison at the major fortress of Vaudreuil in Normandy; they were responsible for surrende ring the castle without a fight to Philip II of France, fatally weakening the English positio n in northern France. Although popular opinion seems to have blamed them for the capitulation , a royal writ is extant stating that the castle was surrendered at King John's command, an d both Saer and Fitzwalter had to endure personal humiliation and heavy ransoms at the hand s of the French. . In Scotland, he was perhaps more successful. In 1211 to 1212, the Earl of Winchester commande d an imposing retinue of a hundred knights and a hundred serjeants in William the Lion's camp aign against the Mac William rebels, a force which some historians have suggested may have be en the mercenary force from Brabant lent to the campaign by John. In 1215, when the baronial rebellion broke out, Robert Fitzwalter became the military command er, and the Earl of Winchester joined him, acting as one of the chief negotiators with John ; both cousins were among the 25 guarantors of the Magna Carta. De Quincy fought against Joh n in the troubles that followed the signing of the Charter, and, again with Fitzwalter, trave lled to France to invite Prince Louis of France to take the English throne. He and Fitzwalte r were subsequently among the most committed and prominent supporters of Louis' candidature f or the kingship, against both John and the infant Henry III. The Fifth Crusade . When military defeat cleared the way for Henry III to take the throne, de Quincy went on crus ade, perhaps in fulfillment of an earlier vow. In 1219 he left to join the Fifth Crusade, the n besieging Damietta. While in the east, he fell sick and died. He was buried in Acre, the ca pital of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, rather than in Egypt, and his heart was brought back and i nterred at Garendon Abbey near Loughborough, a house endowed by his wife's family. Family . The family of de Quincy had arrived in England after the Norman Conquest, and took their nam e from Cuinchy in the Arrondissement of Béthune; the personal name "Saer" was used by them ov er several generations. Both names are variously spelled in primary sources and older moder n works, the first name being sometimes rendered Saher or Seer, and the surname as Quency o r Quenci. The first recorded Saer de Quincy (known to historians as "Saer I") was lord of the manor o f Long Buckby in Northamptonshire in the earlier twelfth century, and second husband of Matil da of St Liz, stepdaughter of King David I of Scotland by Maud of Northumbria. This marriag e produced two sons, Saer II and Robert de Quincy. It was Robert, the younger son, who was th e father of the Saer de Quincy who eventually became Earl of Winchester. By her first husban d Robert Fitz Richard, Maud was also the paternal grandmother of Earl Saer's close ally, Robe rt Fitzwalter. . Robert de Quincy seems to have inherited no English lands from his father, and pursued a knig htly career in Scotland, where he is recorded from around 1160 as a close companion of his co usin, King William the Lion. By 1170 he had married Orabilis, heiress of the Scottish lordshi p of Leuchars and, through her, he became lord of an extensive complex of estates north of th e border which included lands in Fife, Strathearn and Lothian. . Saer de Quincy, the son of Robert de Quincy and Orabilis of Leuchars, was raised largely in S cotland. His absence from English records for the first decades of his life has led some mode rn historians and genealogists to confuse him with his uncle, Saer II, who took part in the r ebellion of Henry the Young King in 1173, when the future Earl of Winchester can have been n o more than a toddler. Saer II's line ended without direct heirs, and his nephew and namesak e would eventually inherit his estate, uniting his primary Scottish holdings with the family' s Northamptonshire patrimony, and possibly some lands in France. Issue . By his wife Margaret de Beaumont, Saer de Quincy had three sons and three daughters: . Lora who married Sir William de Valognes, Chamberlain of Scotland. In the 1180s and 1190s he witnessed severa l charters of the Scottish kings and confirmed his parents’ grants to Newbattle Abbey, near E dinburgh, and made new gifts to the abbeys of Dunfermline and Cambuskenneth. Following his f ather’s inheritance of the other Saer’s lands he moved to England and entered the service o f Richard the Lionheart, fighting alongside the king in 1198. In 1202 and 1203 he served wit h John in Normandy, being appointed with Robert FitzWalter joint castellan of the strategic N orman stronghold of Vaudreuil. In the spring of 1203 the pair, offering no resistance, surre ndered the castle to King Philip of France, who was then over-running Normandy, and John in d isgust refused to contribute to their ransom. There is evidence that Saer and Robert may hav e contracted a relationship of brotherhood-in-arms: Saer’s arms before he became earl bor e a small shield bearing Robert’s arms of a fess between two chevrons, while Robert’s survivi ng seal carries the arms adopted by Saer after he became an earl. . In 1204 the death without issue of his brother-in-law, the earl of Leicester, brought a drama tic improvement in his fortunes, as the earl’s heirs were his two sisters, one of whom was Sa er’s wife. By 1207 a partition of the family’s estates had been made, and Saer, by right o f his wife, found himself taking over valuable and extensive lands in the English Midlands, t he other part of the inheritance going to the second sister, the wife of Simon de Montfort th e elder. In recognition of his enhanced status, Saer was awarded the title of earl of Winche ster. From this time on, he was often employed in John’s service, leading an embassy to Scot land in 1212 and acting as justiciar between 1211 and 1214. . Despite his apparent closeness to John, however, he had unresolved grievances relating to pro perties of which he felt he had been deprived, notably Mountsorrel castle in Leicestershire , a part of his wife’s inheritance that King John had denied him. In 1215 he went over to th e opposition, joining their ranks at his principal residence of Brackley (Northants.). He m arched with the rebels to London and was present at Runnymede. When war erupted again in Oct ober between the king and his opponents, he and another of the Twenty Five, the earl of Heref ord, headed an embassy to France to seek French assistance and to offer the crown to Philip’ s son, Louis. In January 1216 he returned to England with a force of French knights, followe d in May by the dauphin and his army. . Although John’s death later in the year presented an opportunity for reconciliation between r ebels and royalists, Quincy remained steadfast in his allegiance to the former and their cham pion Louis. In the spring of 1217 he learned that his rival, Ranulph, earl of Chester, was b esieging Mountsorrel, and on 30 April he and FitzWalter led an army to its relief, only to fi nd on arrival that the siege had been lifted. They then turned east to attack the royalist-h eld castle of Lincoln, unaware that a royal army was coming to its relief, and under the wall s of Lincoln, on 20 May, they were defeated. Saer himself was taken prisoner. In Septembe r he was released as part of the general settlement and he went on to play a respectable par t in the Minority government of Henry III. In November he was a witness to the reissue of Ma gna Carta and issue of the Charter of the Forest. . In the spring of 1219 he embarked on crusade to assist in the siege of the Egyptian port of D amietta in the company of his son Roger, Robert FitzWalter and William, earl of Arundel. Soo n after his arrival in Egypt, however, he fell ill, and he died on 3 November. In accordanc e with his instructions, he was buried at Acre and the ashes of his organs returned to Englan d for interment at Garendon Abbey (Leics.), of which he was patron. . Saer’s career affords a good illustration of the role that a dispute over property could pla y in determining political allegiance. The same point emerges with equally clarity from othe r periods of instability in the Middle Ages, notably the civil war of King Stephen’s reign i n the 1140s. Saer was one of the most experienced administrators in the ranks of the opposit ion, having served as a baron of the exchequer and a justice of the bench, and was heavily in volved in the negotiations with the king that led to the making of Magna Carta.
