Ranulph le Meschin, 1st Earl of Chester From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ranulf le Meschin, Ranulf de Briquessart or Ranulf I [Ranulph, Ralph](died 1129) was a late 1 1th- and early 12th-century Norman magnatebased in northern and central England. Originatin g in Bessin inNormandy, Ranulf made his career in England thanks to his kinship withHugh d'Av ranches, the earl of Chester, the patronage of kings WilliamII Rufus and Henry I Beauclerc, a nd his marriage to Lucy, heiress ofthe Bolingbroke-Spalding estates in Lincolnshire. Ranulf fought in Normandy on behalf of Henry I, and served the Englishking as a kind of semi- independent governor in the far north-west,Cumberland and Westmorland, before attaining the p alatine county ofChester on the Anglo-Welsh marches in 1120. He held this position forthe rem ainder of his life, and passed the title on to his son. Family and origins Ranulf was the son of Ranulf de Briquessart, viscount of the Bessin,and likely for this reaso n the former Ranulf was styled le Meschin,"the younger". His mother was Matilda, daughter o f Richard, viscountof the Avranchin. We know from an entry in the Durham Liber Vitae, c.109 8 x 1120, that he had an older brother named Richard (who died inyouth), and a younger brothe r named William. He had a sister calledAgnes, who later married Robert de Grandmesnil (die d 1136). Ranulf's earliest appearance in extant historical records was 24 April1089, the date of a cha rter of Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, toBayeux Cathedral. Ranulf, as "Ranulf son of Ran ulf the viscount", wasone of the charter's witnesses. He appeared again in the sources, c.10 93/4, as a witness to the foundation charter of Chester Abbey,granted by his uncle Hugh d'Avr anches, palantine count ("earl") ofChester. Between 1098 and 1101, probably in 1098, Ranul f became amajor English landowner in his own right when he became the thirdhusband of Lucy, h eiress of the honour of Bolingbroke in Lincolnshire.This acquisition also brought him the lor dship of Appleby inCumberland, previously held by Lucy's second husband Ivo Taillebois. Ranulph also became the largest landholder in Lindsey due to hismarriage (ca. 1093) to a woma n referred to as "Countess Lucy", (ca.1079-1138), daughter of (poss) Turold, Sheriff of Linco ln, and (prob)daughter of William Malet, Seigneur de Graville. Her parentage, andwho else sh e married, have been much disputed. Ranulph probably beganbuilding Appleby Castle around 110 0, passing it to the Crown when hewas made Earl of Chester in 1121. Lord of Cumberland, Vicomte de Bayeux in Normandy A charter issued in 1124 by David I, King of the Scots, to Robert I deBrus granting the latte r the lordship of Annandale recorded thatRanulf was remembered as holding lordship of Carlisl e and Cumberland,holding with the same semi-regal rights by which Robert was to holdAnnandale . A source from 1212 attests that the jurors of Cumberlandremembered Ranulf as quondam dominu s Cumberland ("sometime Lord ofCumberland"). Ranulf possessed the power and in some respect s thedignity of a semi-independent earl in the region, though he lacked theformal status of b eing called such. A contemporary illustration ofthis authority is one charter in the record s of Wetheral Priory, whichrecorded Ranulf addressing his own sheriff, "Richer" (probably Ric hardde Boivill). Ivo Taillebois, when he married Ranulf's future wife Lucy, hadacquired her Lincolnshire lands ; sometime after 1086 he acquiredauthority in Westmorland and Kendal. Adjacent lands in Lanca shire andWestmorland, previously controlled by Earl Tostig Godwinson, wereprobably carved u p in the 1080s by the king, between Roger thePoitevin and Ivo, a territorial division at leas t partiallyresponsible for the later boundaries between the two counties. Normanlordship i n the heartland of Cumberland dates to around 1092, the yearKing William Rufus seized the reg ion from its previous ruler,Dolfin.[8] There is inconclusive evidence that this happened arou ndthe same time as William II's expedition to Carlisle, and thatsettlers from Ivo's Lincolnsh ire lands came into Cumberland as aresult. When Ranulf acquired Ivo's authority, or an extended version of it, isnot clear. Between 109 4 and 1098 Lucy was married to Roger fitz Geroldde Roumare, so it is possible that this marri age was the king's way oftransferring authority in the region to Roger fitz Gerold. The"tradi tional view", and that held by the historian William Kapelle,was that Ranulf's authority in t he region did not come about until1106 or after, as a reward for Ranulf's participation in th e Battle ofTinchebrai. Another historian, Richard Sharpe, has recently attackedthis view an d argued that it probably came in or soon after 1098.Sharpe believed that Lucy was the main m echanism by which thisauthority changed hands here, and pointed out that Ranulf had beenmarri ed to Lucy years before Tinchebrai, and that, moreover, Ranulfcan be found months before Tinc hebrai taking evidence from countyjurors at York (which may have been responsible for parts o f thispartially-shired region at this point). Firm dates for Ranulf's authority in the region do however come onlyfrom 1106 and after, wel l into the reign of Henry I. It was in 1106that Ranulf founded a Benedictine monastic hous e at Wetheral, WetheralPriory. The record of the jurors of Cumberland dating to 1212 claimed that Ranulf created two baronies in the region, Burgh-by-Sands forRobert de Trevers, Ranulf' s brother-in-law, and Liddel for TurgisBrandos. He appears to have attempted to give Gilslan d to his brotherWilliam, though its lord, "Gille", held out; later the lordship ofAllerdale ( also called Egremont or Copeland) was given to William.Kirklinton may have been given to Rich ard de Boivill, Ranulf'ssheriff. Earl of Chester Marriage to the a great heiress came only with royal patronage, whichin turn came only throug h having royal respect and trust. Ranulf washowever not recorded often at the court of Henr y I, and did not formpart of the king's closest group of administrative advisers. He washowe ver one of the king's military companions, and served under Henryas an officer of the royal h ousehold when the latter was on campaign;Ranulf was in fact one of his three commanders at th e Battle ofTinchebrai, where he led the vanguard of Henry's army, and was oftenin Normandy wh en the king's interests were threatened there. He isfound serving as a royal justice in bot h 1106 and 1116. Later in hiscareer, 1123-4, he commanded the king's garrison at Évreux durin g thewar with William Clito, and in March 1124 he assisted in the captureof Waleran, Count o f Meulan. The death of Richard, count-palatine of Chester in the White ShipDisaster of 1120 near Barfle ur, paved the way for Ranulf's elevationto comital rank. Merely four days before the disaste r, Ranulf and hiscousin Richard had witnessed a charter together at Cerisy. Henryrecognize d Ranulf as Richard's successor to the county of Chester.Ranulf's accession may have involve d him giving up many of his otherlands, including much of his wife's Lincolnshire lands and h is land inCumbria, though direct evidence for this beyond convenient timing islacking. Richa rd Sharpe suggested that Ranulf may have had to sellmuch land in order to pay the king for th e palatine-county of Chester,though it could not have covered the whole fee, as Ranulf's so n Ranulfde Gernon, when he succeeded his father to Chester in 1129, owed theking £1000 "fro m his father's debt for the land of Earl Hugh". Ranulf died in January 1129, and was buried in Chester Abbey. He wassurvived by his wife an d countess, Lucy, and succeeded by his sonRanulf de Gernon. A daughter, Alicia, married Rich ard de Clare, alord in the Anglo-Welsh marches.
