Boniface of Montferrat From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Boniface of Montferrat (c. 1150?1207) was Marquess of Montferrat andthe leader of the Fourt h Crusade. He was the third or fourth son ofWilliam V of Montferrat and Judith of Babenberg , born after hisfather's return from the Second Crusade. Boniface's youthful exploits in the late 1170s are recalled in thefamous Epic Letter, "Vale n marques, senher de Monferrat", by his goodfriend and court troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras . These included therescue of the heiress Jacopina of Ventimiglia from her uncle CountOtto, w ho was intending to deprive her of her inheritance and send herto Sardinia. Boniface arrange d a marriage for her. When Alberto ofMalaspina, abducted Saldina de Mar, a daughter of a prom inent Genoesefamily, Boniface rescued her, since one of his sisters was Alberto'swife. After 1183, with his father and (from 1187) his older brother Conradin the East, Boniface wa s master in Montferrat, and engaged inmilitary campaigns on behalf of his cousin Frederic k I Barbarossaagainst the independent city communes of the Lombard League. In 1191,after Fred erick's son Henry VI granted him the county of Incisa, afifteen-year war broke out against th e neighbouring communes of Astiand Alessandria. Boniface joined the Cremona League, while th e twocities joined the League of Milan. Boniface defeated the cities atMontiglio in June tha t year, but the war as a whole went badly for thedynasty's interests. At Quarto, he and Vaque iras saved hisbrother-in-law Alberto of Malaspina when he was unhorsed. The firstphase of th e war ended with a truce in April 1193. By now, Bonifacewas Marquess of Montferrat, followin g the tragic death of his brotherConrad, the newly elected King of Jerusalem, the previous ye ar. In June 1194, Boniface was appointed one of the leaders of Henry VI'sexpedition to Sicily. A t Messina, amid the fighting between theGenoese and Pisan fleets, Vaqueiras protected his lor d with his ownshield - an act which helped the troubador win a knighthood fromBoniface that y ear, after the campaign's successful conclusion:Henry's coronation in Palermo. In October 119 7, the truce with Astiended. Boniface made an alliance with Acqui in June 1198. There werenum erous skirmishes and raids, including at Ricaldone and Caranzano, but by 1199 it was clear th e war was lost, and Boniface entered intonegotiations. Throughout the 1180s-90s, despite the wars, Boniface had neverthelesspresided over one of th e most prestigious courts of chivalric cultureand troubador song. In 12C, the Piemontèis lang uage (which in thepresent day reflects more French and Italian influences) was virtuallyindis tinguishable from the Occitan of Southern France and Catalonia.Besides Vaqueiras, visitors in cluded Peire Vidal, Gaucelm Faidit, andArnaut de Mareuil. Boniface's patronage was celebrate d widely. ToFaidit, he was Mon Thesaur (My Treasure). Curiously, Vaqueirassometimes addresse d him as N'Engles (Lord Englishman), but the in-jokeis never explained. When the original leader of the Fourth Crusade, Count Theobald III ofChampagne, died in 1201 , Boniface was chosen as its new leader. He wasan experienced soldier, and it was an opportun ity to reassert hisdynasty's reputation after defeat at home. Boniface's family waswell-estab lished in the east; his oldest brother William was thefather of King Baldwin V of Jerusalem , and his brother Conrad had beenthe brother-in-law of Isaac II Angelus, and then briefly Kin g ofJerusalem in the Third Crusade. His younger brother, Renier, had beena son-in-law of Manu el I Comnenus. Boniface was a cousin of Philip of Swabia, who was married to Irene, asister of the deposed B yzantine emperor Isaac II Angelus. In thewinter of 1201 Boniface spent Christmas with Philli p in Hagenau, andwhile there also met with Alexius Angelus, Isaac II's son, who hadescaped fr om the custody of his uncle Alexius III Angelus. At thistime the three discussed the possibil ity of using the crusading armyto restore Alexius' right to the throne. Both Boniface and Ale xiustravelled separately to Rome to ask for Pope Innocent III's blessingfor the endeavour; ho wever, Boniface was specifically told by Innocentnot to attack any Christians, including th e Byzantines. The Crusader army was in debt to the doge of Venice, who had providedtheir fleet. He instruct ed them to attack the rebellious cities ofTrieste, Moglie, and Zara and beat them into submis sion before sailingfor Cairo. The Pope was angered by these Christian cities beingattacked b y a Crusader army. The doge, Enrico Dandolo, was now thetrue war leader of this Crusade, wit h Boniface as only a figurehead.Alexius Angelus made many promises to the Crusaders and their principal financer, the doge of Venice, for riches and honors if theywould help him reclaim h is kingdom. Dandolo placated the Pope byhaving Alexius Angelus promise to submit the Orthodo x Church to Romewhen he was restored to his throne in Constantinople. This being done, the fle et set sail for Constantinople in 1203. After the conquest of Constantinople in 1204, Boniface was assumed tobe the new emperor, bot h by the western knights and the conqueredByzantine citizens. However, the Venetians vetoed h im, believing thathe already had too many connections in the Empire (and, likely, feltthat th ey would not have as much influence in the new Empire ifBoniface was in control). Instead, th ey chose Baldwin of Flanders.Boniface founded the Kingdom of Thessalonica (where his brothe r Renierhad held territory), and also held territory in Crete, though he latersold Crete to t he Venetians. He was first married c. 1170 to a lady of the del Bosco family, and(according to Nicetas Chon iates) married for a second time c. 1186. Hehad at least one son and daughter by his first wi fe, but it is notcertain to which marriage Agnes was born: William VI, b. ca 1173. Marquess of Montferrat Beatrice, m. Henry II del Carretto, marquess of Savona, as the secondof his three wives; sh e is the Bel Cavalher (Fair Knight) ofVaqueiras's songs. Agnes, m. the Emperor Henry of Flanders in 1204, and died within threeyears. Some sources claim that in 1197, Boniface married Eleonora, a daughterof his cousin Umberto I II, count of Savoie, Aosta and Moriana. If so,she died in 1202, leaving no known children. Us seglio is sceptical ofthis marriage having taken place: the evidence is thin, and therewoul d have been questions of consanguinity. It is notable thatVaqueiras, in his songs of the 1190 s, addressed Beatrice, but neitherhe nor any other troubadour working at the court in this pe rioddedicated any songs to a wife of Boniface, which suggests he was along-term widower. In C onstantinople he married a Hungarian princess,Margareta, daughter of Bela III of Hungary, wh o was the widow ofEmperor Isaac II Angelus. They had one child: Demetrius, b. ca, 1205. King of Thessalonica Boniface was killed in an ambush by the Bulgarians on September 4,1207, and his head was sen t to Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan. The loyalVaqueiras, who had followed him to the East, probably d ied with him:it is significant that he composed no planh (lament) in his memory.

William II of Sicily From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William II (1153 - 1189), king of Sicily, was only thirteen years oldat the death of his fath er William I when he was placed under theregency of his mother, Marguerite of Navarre. Until the king came of age in 1171 the government was controlled firstby the chancellor Steph en of Perche, cousin of Marguerite (1166-1168),and then by Walter Ophamil, archbishop of Pale rmo, and Matthewd'Ajello, the vice-chancellor. William's character is very indistinct. Lacking in militaryenterprise, secluded and pleasure- loving, he seldom emerged from hispalace life at Palermo. Yet his reign is marked by an ambit iousforeign policy and a vigorous diplomacy. Champion of the papacy and insecret league wit h the Lombard cities he was able to defy the commonenemy, Frederick I, Barbarossa. In 1174 an d 1175 he made treaties withGenoa and Venice and his marriage in February 1177 with Joan, dau ghterof Henry II of England, marks his high position in European politics. To secure peace with the emperor he sanctioned the marriage of hisaunt Constance, daughter o f Roger II, with Frederick's son Henry, afterwards the emperor Henry VI, causing a general oat h to be taken toher as his successor in case of his death without heirs. This step, fatal to t he Norman kingdom, was possibly taken that William mightdevote himself to foreign conquests. Unable to revive the African dominion, William directed his attack onEgypt, from which Saladi n threatened the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem. In July 1174, 50,000 men were landed before Alexa ndria, but Saladin'sarrival forced the Sicilians to re-embark in disorder. A betterprospect o pened in the confusion in Byzantine affairs which followedthe death of Manuel Comnenus (1180) , and William took up the olddesign and feud against Constantinople. Durazzo was captured (Ju ne 11,1185) and in August Thessalonica surrendered to the joint attack ofthe Sicilian fleet a nd army. The troops then marched upon the capital, but the troop of the emperorIsaac Angelus overthre w the invaders on the banks of the Strymon(September 7, 1185). Thessalonica was at once aband oned and in 1189William made peace with Isaac, abandoning all the conquests. He wasnow planni ng to induce the crusading armies of the West to passthrough his territories, and seemed abou t to play a leading part inthe Third Crusade. His admiral Margarito, a naval genius equal toG eorge of Antioch, with 600 vessels kept the eastern Mediterraneanopen for the Franks, and for ced the all-victorious Saladin to retirefrom before Tripoli in the spring of 1188. In November 1189 William died, leaving no children. His title of "theGood" is due perhaps les s to his character than to the cessation ofinternal troubles in his reign. The "Voyage" of Ib n-Giobair, atraveller in Sicily in 1183-1185, shows William surrounded by Muslimwomen and eun uchs, speaking and reading Arabic and living like "aMoslem king."

Notes:

William I of Sicily From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William I (d. May 7, 1166) was king of Sicily from 1154 to 1166. He was the fourth son of Roger II and Elvira Alfonso of Castile, andgrew up with little expec tation of ruling. The deaths of his 3 olderbrothers between 1138 and 1148 changed matters, th ough when his fatherdied William was still not well-prepared to take his place. William's title "the Bad" seems little merited and expresses the biasof the historian Falcand us and the baronial class against the king andthe official class by whom he was guided. It i s obvious, however, thatWilliam was far inferior in character and energy to his father, andwa s attached to the semi-Muslim life of his gorgeous palaces ofPalermo. The real power in the kingdom was at first exercised by Maio of Bari,a man of low birth, whos e title ammiratus ammiratorum was the highestin the realm. Maio continued Roger's policy of e xcluding the noblesfrom the administration, and sought also to curtail the liberties ofthe to wns. The barons, always chafing against the royal power, wereencouraged to revolt by Pope Adr ian IV, whose recognition William hadnot yet sought, by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnen us and theGerman emperor Frederick I. At the end of 1155 Greek troops recovered Bari and began to besiegeBrindisi. William, however , was not devoid of military energy; landingin Italy he destroyed the Greek fleet and army a t Brindisi (May 28,1156) and recovered Bari. Adrian came to terms at Benevento (June 18),aban doned the rebels and confirmed William as king, and in 1158 peacewas made with the Greeks. These diplomatic successes were probably due to Maio; on the otherhand, the African dominion s were lost to the Almohads (1156-1160), andit is possible that he advised their abandonmen t in face of thedangers threatening the kingdom down from the north. The policy of theministe r led to a general conspiracy, and in November 1160 he wasmurdered in Palermo by Matthew Bone llo, leader of the Sicilian nobles. For a while the king was in the hands of the conspirators, whopurposed murdering or deposin g him, but the people and the armyrallied round him; he recovered power, crushed the Sicilia n rebels, had Bonello blinded, and in a short campaign reduced the rest of theRegno. Thus free d from feudal revolts, William confided the governmentto men trained in Maio's school, such a s the grand notary, Matthewd'Agello. His latter years were peaceful; he was now the champio n ofthe true pope against the emperor, and Alexander III was installed inthe Lateran Palace i n November 1165 by a guard of Normans. Williamdied on May 7, 1166. William married Margaret of Navarre, daughter of Garcia IV Ramirez ofNavarre. They had 4 sons : Roger (d. 1161), duke of Apulia Robert William II of Sicily Henry (d. 1172), prince of Capua

Roger II of Sicily From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Roger II (1093-February 26, 1154), son and successor of Roger I, beganhis rule in 1112. It i s Roger II's distinction to have united all theNorman conquests into one kingdom and to hav e granted them ascientific, personal and centralized government. Rise to power in southern Italy When William the duke of Apulia, son of Roger Borsa and grandson ofRobert Guiscard, died chil dless in June of 1127, Roger claimed allHauteville possessions and the overlordship of Capua . However theunion of Sicily and Apulia was resisted by Honorius II and by thesubjects of th e duchy itself. At Capua (Dec. 1127), the pope preacheda crusade against Roger, setting Rober t II of Capua and Ranulf ofAlife (brother-in-law of Roger) against him. However this coalitio nfailed, and in August 1128 Honorius invested Roger at Benevento asduke of Apulia. The baroni al resistance, which was backed by Naples,Bari, Salerno and other cities whose aim was civi c freedom gave way.In September of 1129 Roger was generally recognized as duke by Naples,Capu a, and the rest. He began at once to enforce order in theHauteville possessions, where the du cal power had long been fading. For the binding together of all his states the royal name seem edessential, and the death of Honorius in February 1130, followed by adouble election, appear ed the decisive moment. While Innocent II fledto France, Roger supported Anacletus II. The pr ice was a crown, and onthe 27th of September 1130 a bull of Anacletus made Roger king ofSicil y. He was crowned in Palermo on the 25th of December 1130. This plunged Roger into a ten-year war. Bernard of Clairvaux,Innocent's champion, built u p a coalition against Anacletus and his"half heathen king". He was joined by Louis VI of Fran ce, Henry I ofEngland and the emperor Lothar. Meanwhile South Italy revolted. Therebels defea ted the king at Nocera on the 24th of July 1132.Nevertheless, by July 1134 his troops force d Ranulf, Sergius, duke ofNaples, and the rebels to submit, while Robert was expelled fromCap ua. Meanwhile Lothar's contemplated attack upon Roger had gainedthe backing of Pisa, Genoa an d the Greek emperor, each of whom fearedthe growth of a powerful Norman kingdom. In Februar y 1137 Lothar beganto move south and was joined by Ranulf and the rebels. In June hebesiege d and took Ban. At San Sevenino, after a victorious campaign,he and the pope jointly investe d Ranuif as duke of Apulia (August1137), and the emperor then retired to Germany. Roger, free d from theutmost danger, recovered ground, sacked Capua and forced Sergius toacknowledge hi m as overlord of Naples. At Rignano Ranulf againdefeated the king, but in April 1139 Ranulf d ied. Roger then subduedthe last of the rebels. After the death of Anacletus (January 1138) Roger decided to seek theconfirmation of his titl e from Innocent. The pope, invading thekingdom with a large army, was skillfully ambushed a t Galuccio (July22, 1139). After the king's victory on the 25th July, the popeinvested him a s "Rex Siciliae ducatus Apuliae et principatus Capuae."The boundaries of the regno were final ly fixed by a truce with thepope in October 1144. These lands were for the next seven centuri es toconstitute the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily. Roger had now become one of the greatest kings in Europe. At PalermoRoger drew round him dist inguished men of various races, such as thefamous Arab geographer Idrisi and the historian Ni lus Doxopatrius. Theking welcomed the learned and he maintained a complete toleration forth e several creeds, races and languages of his realm. He was served bymen of nationality so dis similar as the Englishman Thomas Brun, a kaidof the Curia, and, in the fleet, by the renegad e Muslim Christodoulos, and the Antiochene George, whom he made in 1132 "amiratus amiratorum," in effect prime vizier. Roger made Sicily the leading maritime power in the Mediterranean. Apowerful fleet was buil t up under several admirals, or "emirs," ofwhom the greatest was George of Antioch, formerl y in the service ofthe Muslim prince of El Mehdia. Mainly by him a series of conquestswere ma de on the African coast (1135-53) which reached from Tripoli toCape Bona. The Second Crusade (1147-48) offered Roger an opportunity to reviveRobert Guiscard's design s on the Greek Empire. George was sent toCorinth at the end of 1147 and despatched an army in land whichplundered Thebes. In June 1149 the admiral appeared beforeConstantinople and defie d the Byzantine emperor by firing arrowsagainst the palace windows. Yet the attack on the emp ire had noenduring results. The king died at Palermo on the 26th of February1154, and was suc ceeded by his fourth son William. Roger II's elaborate coronation cloak, later used by the Holy RomanEmperors, is now in the Im perial Treasury (Schatzkammer) in Vienna. For a picture and description, see [1](http://www.kh m.at/system2E.html?/staticE/page480.html) Family Roger II's first marriage was to Elvira Alfonso of Castile, a daughterof King Alfonso VI of C astile. When she died in 1135, rumors flew thatRoger had died as well, as his grief had mad e him a recluse. Theirsons were: Roger, Count of Lecce (died 1148) Tancred (died 1143) Alphonse (died 1144) William I of Sicily Roger II married secondly to Sibyl of Burgundy, daughter of Hugh II,Duke of Burgundy, but sh e died a year later in 1150. His thirdmarriage was to Beatrix of Rethel, a grandniece of Kin g Baldwin II ofJerusalem. Beatrix bore him a posthumous daughter, Constance ofSicily. Jolly Roger In his book "Pirates & The Lost Templar Fleet," David HatcherChildress claims that the term J olly Roger was coined after the KingRoger, the first man to fly the flag. Childress claims th at, manyyears later after the Templars were disbanded by the church, at leastone Templar flee t split into four independent fleets that dedicatedthemselves to pirating ships of any countr y sympathetic to Rome. Theflag was thus an inheritance, and its crossed bones are an obviousr eference to the original Templar logo of a red cross with bluntedends. ------------------------------------------------------------- Note: Note: Roger II (1095-1154), first king of Sicily (1130-54), whocreated a state in whic h Arabs, Greeks, Italians, and Jews livedtogether in peace and in which the arts and letter s flourished.Thesecond son of Roger I, the Norman conqueror of Sicily, Roger succeededhis bro ther Simon (died 1105) as count of Sicily in1103. When hiscousin Duke William of Apulia die d in 1127, Roger laid claim to thatduchy; by 1129 he had compelled the Norman barons on the I talianmainland to acknowledge him as theirruler. In 1130 he adopted thetitle of king of Sicil y, with sovereignty also over the southernItalian regions of Apulia, Calabria, Capua, and Nap les, establishing amonarchy that survived for more than seven centuries. He wasrecognized ask ing by Pope Innocent II (r. 1130-43) in 1139. Roger madehis court at Palermo one of Europe' s foremost cultural centers, and heerected throughout Sicily numerous buildings that were a s trikingblend of Norman, Arabic and Byzantine architectural styles.

Roger Borsa From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Roger Borsa (c. 1078?February 22, 1111) was the son and successor ofRobert Guiscard, the Norm an conqueror of Southern Italy and Sicily. His mother was Sikelgaita, an imposing warrior Lomb ard noblewoman. Hisambitious mother arranged for Roger to succeed his father in place ofRober t Guiscard's eldest son by another wife, Bohemund of Taranto.According to John Julius Cooper , 2nd Viscount Norwich: "...Roger -- nicknamed Borsa, the purse, from his early-ingrainedhabit of counting and recoun ting his money. He was a weak and hesitantthirteen-year-old who gave the impression that a ch ildhood spent withRobert and Sichelgaita had been too much for him." His father died in 1085 at Corfu. It happened that when RobertGuiscard died, Bohemund was els ewhere in Italy, so Roger Borsa and hismother were able to seize power. His Lombard heritag e also made him amore attractive candidate than his Norman half-brother. Roger was notas adep t as Robert Guiscard, and most of his reign was spent in feudalanarchy. Bohemund contested lo rdship of Apulia with him, and actuallyseized Apulia in 1085. Though described as a powerfu l warrior (he tookthe cities of Benevento, Canosa, Capua, and Lucera by siege) RogerBorsa wa s never able to check Bohemund's power or bring him under hiscontrol. In 1089 Roger Borsa wa s officially invested with the duchy ofApulia by Pope Urban II. Roger Borsa married Adela of Flanders, the daughter of Robert I, Countof Flanders, and was su cceeded by their son William. However Williamproved to be as weak a ruler as his father, an d the domain wasultimately inherited by a cousin, Roger II of Sicily.
