Notes:

The early life experience of Benjamin, son of John and Sarah, must have been exciting and try ing. One can surmise, given what was happening in the world that time, that these circumstan ces influenced his opportunity and his decision. Mary of the famous duet monarchs Willia m and Mary was killed by smallpox in 1694. King William died in March 1702. It might have b een a good time to leave England, since a war with France was not underway as it usually was , and England wanted to secure the New World for itself by encouraging immigration to the co lonies. Benjamin must have learned his brewing skills in Philadelphia. His oldest son, Benjamin II w as born the year his father established the brewery in Annapolis, 1703. Three years later an other Benjamin wasborn, this one in Boston and his name was Franklin. (BenjaminFranklin ra n away to Philadelphia in 1723, just a few years after thedeath of Benjamin Fordham mentione d here as a touch stone in history)A common practice was for younger men in the family to see k topractice their professions in a new place, rather than to try andcompete in the same busi ness in the same place they had learned. Atthis time, Philadelphia was a town of no more tha n 2,000 inhabitants.One brewery would likely be enough, two one too many. Thus Annapolis.Phi ladelphia was also strongly under the thumb of the Penn family andinfluenced by the Quaker ve rsion of religion. What part this playedin the decision to try the provincial capital of Ann apolis, a.k.aProctor and Anne Arundel Town, is interesting, but speculation. BothMaryland a nd Pennsylvania were not states, nor royal colonies at thispoint. They were owned and operat ed by the proprietors who had beengranted the property by the english crown. Much mischief w ould occuras the colonies moved toward being independent. The brewery which Benjamin started gives this history in its brochure:"In 1694 the courts rel ocated to a city first called Proctor, later tobe renamed Anne Arundel Town. The first indus try of the newprovincial capital, soon to be re-dubbed Annapolis, was established in1703. I t was a brewery owned by Benjamin Fordham, who had emigratedfrom his home in London for Phila delphia. By 1708, he had gainedenough respect to be named an Alderman in Annapolis." (note:A problem with the information shows that Joseph and Richard were both born in 1705, on e in Annapolis, the other in Philadelphia.Who knows?) If it is true that Martha LaPierr e died after 1754 andBenjamin took another wife, then he did so at 74 or 75 years of age.He d id live 22 years after Martha died.
