Mary Taylor, nicknamed Puss, by her peers brought a lot to the marriage to William Gaston For dham in 1888. She brought distinguishedline of relatives with the Taylors. Much research i s needed to complete the picture of this family that plays such an important role in the man y North Carolina Fordhams. . What life was like for a girl born the year the Civil War ended would be interesting to know . Bits and pieces of history, true or legend,have come through the family grapevine. Thos e times when the family would bury their valuables and food to hide it from enemy troops or d isserters, merely hints at the difficultly that must have been experienced after the war whe n farming was hard and getting products to a virtually non-existant market kept most close t o home on what ever they could make for themselves. It has been said that Abraham Lincoln wa s always referred to as "Damned ol' Abe Lincoln" even after his death. While Andrew Johnso n had ties to North Carolina and wanted to be lenient towards the rebels, it was not to be . He spent a large part of his administration fighting for his political life and resistin g the impeachment proceedings against him. . Mary was 23 when she married Gaston. William was born within a year,followed pretty quickl y by 7 brothers and sisters. It was a time whenthe world was changing rapidly. Railroads we re the mode of transportation preferred for people and products. The south was recovering fr om the ravages of war, but hate continued to be evidentand pervasive. There was a civil righ ts act passed, but the Ku Klux Klan was also founded. The typewritter was invented, the Gran ge started, Grant became president, the battle of Little Big Horn occurred, the telephone wa s invented, and Garfield became president tobe assinated quickly thereafter. The Washingto n monument was completed, the Johnstown flood happened in Pennsylvania, Jane Adams started Hu ll house, Yosemite Park was created, several financial panics occurred, and basketball was in vented. What a foment of change for raising a family on the farm in post war North Carolina . This was the married life of Gaston and Mary, and the childhood environment of most of th e children. .
