Notes:

William Hussey, believed to be a son of Hugh Hussey, was born about1030 in Normandy. It is pr esumed that he accompanied William theConqueror in his invasion of England and participated i n the Battle ofHastings in 1066. It is suggested that he held land in Somersetshire,probabl y Sanford Manor, as his portion of the spoils of conquest. Heand his brother, Walter Hussey w ere listed as residents ofSomersetshire in 1080 living in the vicinity of Bath, according to" Doomesday Book". Twenty years after the Battle of Hastings KingWilliam I (the Conqueror) orde red the survey which later became knownas "Doomsday Book" probably to record the fiscal right s of the king inmatters of income and taxation. In a sense it was a census because itlisted t he Norman noblemen and some of their sub-tenants.

Alfonso I (of Castille), called The Brave (1030-1109), king of Castile(1072-1109), and as Alf onso VI, king of León (1065-1109). His father,King Ferdinand I of Castile and León, died in 1 065 and left hiskingdom, divided into three parts, to his three sons. Alfonso receivedonly Le ón, but he succeeded to nearly all his father's dominions as aresult of a war with his brothe rs, and he also added Toledo and NewCastile to his holdings. In 1086 the Abbadids of Seville , withAlmoravid help, defeated him at Zalaca and stopped the gradualreconquest of Spain by th e Christian rulers. Alfonso VI (before June 1040 - July 1, 1109), nicknamed the Brave, wasking of León from 106 5 to 1109 and king of Castile since 1072 afterhis brother's death. As he was the first Alfons o to be King of Castilehe is sometimes referred to as Alfonso I of Castile. In 1077, heprocla imed himself "emperor of all Spain". Much romance has gatheredround his name. In the cantar de gesta of the Cid, he plays the part attributed bymedieval poets to the great est kings, and to Charlemagne himself. Heis alternately the oppressor and the victim of heroi c and self-willednobles ? the idealized types of the patrons for whom the jongleurs andtrouba dours sang. He is the hero of a cantar de gesta which, like allbut a very few of the early Sp anish songs, like the cantar of Bernardodel Carpio and the Infantes of Lara, exists now onl y in the fragmentsincorporated in the chronicle of Alfonso the Wise or in ballad form. His flight from the monastery of Sahagun, where his brother Sanchoendeavoured to imprison him , his chivalrous friendship for his hostAlmamun of Toledo, caballero aunque moro, "a knight a lthough a Moor",the passionate loyalty of his vassal Peranzules, and his brotherlylove for hi s sister Urraca of Zamora, may owe something to the poetwho took him as a hero. They are the answer to the poet of the nobles who represented the kingas having submitted t o taking a degrading oath at the hands of RuyDiaz de Vivar (El Cid), in the church of Santa G adea at Burgos, and ashaving then persecuted the brave man who defied him. When every allowance is made, Alfonso VI stands out as a strong manfighting as a king whose i nterest was law and order, and who was theleader of the nation in the reconquest. He impresse d himself on theArabs as a very fierce and astute enemy, but as a keeper of his word.A stor y of Muslim origin, which is probably no more historical thanthe oath of Santa Gadea, tells o f how he allowed himself to be trickedby Ibn Ammar, the favourite of Al Mutamid, the king o f Seville. Theyplayed chess for an extremely beautiful table and set of men,belonging to Ib n Ammar. Table and men were to go to the king if hewon. If Ibn Ammar gained he was to name th e stake. The latter did winand demanded that the Christian king should spare Seville. Alfonso kept his word. Whatever truth may lie behind the romantic tales of Christian andMuslim, we know that Alfons o represented in a remarkable way the twogreat influences then shaping the character and civi lization of Spain. Alfonso married at least five times, had two mistresses, and onefiancee. His first wife was A gnes, daughter of William VII ofAquitaine. They had no children and were divorced due to cons anguity.The second wife was Constance of Burgundy; their daughter was Urracaof Castile. Prio r to this he was betrothed to Agatha, one of thedaughters of William I of England. Two late r wives, Beatrice andBertha, are of unknown origin. By his mistress Jimena Muñoz, daughtero f the Count of Asturias, he had two illegitimate daughters: Teresa ofLeon and Elvira of Casti le. At the instigation, it is said, of his wife Constance, he brought theCistercian Order into Sp ain, established them in Sahagun, chose aFrench Cistercian, Bernard, as the first archbisho p of Toledo afterthe reconquest on May 25, 1085, married his daughters, Urraca ofCastile, th e legitimate and Teresa of Leon, the illegitimate, toFrench princes, and in every way forward ed the spread of Frenchinfluence ? then the greatest civilizing force in Europe. He also drew Spain nearer to the Papacy, and it was his decision which establishedthe Roman ritual in plac e of the old missal of Saint Isidore ? theMozarabic rite. On the other hand he was very open to Arabic influence. He protectedthe Muslims among his sub jects and struck coins with inscriptions inArabic letters. After the death of Constance he pe rhaps married and hecertainly lived with Zaida, said to have been a daughter-in-law of AlMuta mid, Muslim king of Seville. Alfonso's wife Isabel, who bore himthe only son, Sancho, among h is many children, may have been thisZaida, who became a Christian under the name of Maria o r Isabel.Isabel also bore him two daughters, Elvira Alfonso (who married RogerII of Sicily) a nd Sancha (wife of Rodrigo Gonzalez de Lara). Sancho, Alfonso's designated successor, was slain at the battle ofUcles in 1108.
