Nicholas belonged to a Richmondshire family that tookits na me from the township of Stapleton, on the south bank of the Tees,about t wo miles south-west of Darlington, in which it possessed a smallestate. T he first member of the family to attain any position was Nicholas DeStapl eton I, who wasCustos of Middleham Castle in the reign of King Johnand w as the father of Nicholas De Stapleton II, the father of thefirst-mention ed Nicholas III. Nicholas III served as a Judge of the King's Benchbetwe en 1272 and 1290, held sixteen caracates of land scattered throughoutYork shire, besides some Berkshire lands that he obtained from his wife,and di ed in 1290. Miles de Stapletonwas the eldest surviving son and, at his father'sdeat h, was already marriedto Sybil (also called Isabel), daughter andco-heir ess to John De Bellew. Through her mother, Laderana, Sybil inherited asha re of the possessions of theelder line of the Bruces, which were divid ed among four sisters and co-heiresses at the death of her uncle, Pet er De Bruce of Skelton, in 1271. In memoryof this connection with su ch a great house, Miles De Stapleton assumed the lion rampant of theBruc es as his arms. Miles served in the Gascon and Scottish Wars of KingEdwa rd I. In 1291, he was engaged on the King's business, under Roger DeMowbr ay, in Scotland. In 1295, he was in Gascony. In 1298, he was in theFalki rk Campaign, serving under his patron, Henry De Lacy, 3rd EarlofLincol n. In 1300, he was summoned to the Siege of Carlaverock, but he wasnot me ntioned in the famous French poem on the siege. In the same year, heaccom panied the Earl of Lincoln on a mission to the Court of Rome, receivin g, on 9th October, letters of protection for one year. Miles wasentrust ed by theKing with the direction of the household of Edward, Prince ofWa les. He served in the Siege of Stirling, in attendance on the Princean d, in October 1305, when the Earl of Lincoln wished to appoint Staplet on to manage his household during his absence at the Papal Court, thePrin ce informed the Earl that hehad no power to give Stapleton leave to ho ld this post without the express command of the King. Stapleton was o ne of the experienced men of affairs to whom Edward I entrusted thediffic ult task of bringing up his son in businesslike and soldierly ways.Meanwh ile, his estates and influence in Yorkshire weresteadily increasing. T he betrothal of his eldest son to a daughter of John of Brittany, Ea rl of Richmond, and a grand-niece of the King, and his second son'sbetrot hal to one of the daughters of Brian FitzAlan, Lord of Bedale,connected h im with two branches of the greatest family of his district, andincreas ed the importance of the house. After the death of Edmund of Cornwallh ad led to the lapse of his vast property to the Crown, Edward I madeStapl etonSeneschal of Knaresborough Castle and Steward and joint Constab le of Knaresborough Forest. In 1305, he was, jointly with John DeByron, a ppointed commissioner to suppress the clubmen or trail-bastons ofLancashi re, but they were shortly afterwards superseded. Nicholas belonged to a Richmondshire family that tookits na me from the township of Stapleton, on the south bank of the Tees,about t wo miles south-west of Darlington, in which it possessed a smallestate. Miles de Stapletonwas the eldest surviving son and, at his father'sdeat h, was already marriedto Sybil (also called Isabel), daughter andco-heir ess to John De Bellew. Through her mother, Laderana, Sybil inherited asha re of the possessions of theelder line of the Bruces, which were divid ed among four sisters and co-heiresses at the death of her uncle, Pet er De Bruce of Skelton, in 1271. In memoryof this connection with su ch a great house, Miles De Stapleton assumed the lion rampant of theBruc es as his arms. Miles served in the Gascon and Scottish Wars of KingEdwa rd I. In 1291, he was engaged on the King's business, under Roger DeMowbr ay, in Scotland. In 1295, he was in Gascony. In 1298, he was in theFalki rk Campaign, serving under his patron, Henry De Lacy, 3rd EarlofLincol n. In 1300, he was summoned to the Siege of Carlaverock, but he wasnot me ntioned in the famous French poem on the siege. In the same year, heaccom panied the Earl of Lincoln on a mission to the Court of Rome, receivin g, on 9th October, letters of protection for one year. Miles wasentrust ed by theKing with the direction of the household of Edward, Prince ofWa les. He served in the Siege of Stirling, in attendance on the Princean d, in October 1305, when the Earl of Lincoln wished to appoint Staplet on to manage his household during his absence at the Papal Court, thePrin ce informed the Earl that hehad no power to give Stapleton leave to ho ld this post without the express command of the King. The Stapylton family is one of great repute and antiquity in thecounty. They take their surna me from Stapleton-on-Tees, where theypossessed lands previous to the Conquest. The first of w hom any recordhas been preserved was Heryon, or Herman, who held the manor ofStapleton in 105 2, and was father of Alan de Stapylton, who was livingin 1080. Sir John, his grandson, was lo rd of Stapleton, andcomptroller of the household to King Stephen. Sir Miles Stapylton,Knight , the next in descent, fought under the st andard of the Cross, in Palestine, and, on his return, marriedPendoras, daughter of the Kin g of Cyprus. After three descents cameanother Sir Nicholas, who distinguished himself in th e wars of Gasconyand Scotland, in the reigns of the first and second Edwards, and wassummone d to parliament, as a baron, in 1313. His son, Sir MilesStapylton, second baron, was summone d to parliament in 1342. Hemarried Sibill, a niece and coheir of Peter de Brus, who brought h imthe manor of Carlton. He was involved in the insurrection of Thomas,Earl of Lancaster, an d was fined 2,000 marks to save his life, but thefine was remitted by Edward III. in the firs t year of his reign. Hisson, Sir Miles, third baron, was one of the first knights of thegarte r. He was a warrior of repute, and was high sheriff of Yorkshirein 1353, again in 1355, and a lso for the five years following. Ofanother of this family, Sir Bryan Stapylton, K.G., it i s related that"the King of England and the King of Cyprus being present, he foughtwith a Sara cen, faith for faith, whom, by the grace of God and hisvalour, he did kill. For which cause h e did desire for the reward ofhis valour, of Edward III., then present, nothing else but tha t he andhis heirs, in memoryof the victory, should carry for their crest thehead of a Saracen ." Sir Robert Stapylton, of Wighill, Knight, whenhigh sheriff of Yorkshire, in 1581, met th e judges with seven scoremen, in suitable liveries. He was, according to Camden, "a person we llspoken, comely, and skilled in the languages, with scarce an equal,except Sir Philip Sidney , and no superior in England." Bryan,third sonof Sir Robert, was Receiver-General in the nort h for Charles I., andseated himself at Myton. From him the Myton branch of the family isdesce nded. His son, Sir Henry, was created a baronet in 1660. SirMartin Stapylton,eighth baronet , died, without issue, in 1817, and thetitle became extinct, but the estates devolved upon hi s nephew, MartinBree, Esq. (son of his sister Anne, wife of the Rev. John Bree), whoassumed t he surname and arms of Stapylton only. The present owner ofMyton, his grandson, was high sher iff of Yorkshire in 1876.
