Posted by: Barbara Bryant (ID *****6916) Date: March 13, 2005 "Cader Mitchell of Bertie County was married to Elizabeth Jenkins. I have seen her death dat e as 1801, but can't remember where I saw it. At any rate, Cader's dtr. Elizabeth was b. 180 5 in S.C. and his son, Jeremiah b. 1811. Elizabeth Jenkins Mitchell would have been 50 when E lizabeth was born, and 56 when Jeremiah was born. At that time in history, this seems quite o ld to be bearing children. Her other children were born between 1777 - 1785. I'm wondering i f Cader could have had a second wife. My anscestor is Elizabeth who married Reuben Ray first , then Henry Rogers. On all census where Elizabeth is listed, she says that she was born in S .C. Any help greatly appreciated. Barbara" Reply that I posted: "Cader Mitchell conveniently left a will written in 1811 and proven in 1813. I have a copy o f that will. He does not name a wife and so I assume that his wife or wives were already dead . His father, William, also left a will in 1796 and names his wife Elizabeth. Do you know whe re Cader's wife is named? I suspect that the Elizabeth who died in 1801 was probably Cader's mother and not his wife. O ne clue to that is that James Jenkins, Jr and Cader Mitchell (son) were executors for Willia m Mitchell's estate. It was common for 2 "sides" of the family to be put in charge to insur e fairness. I suspect that James Jenkins, Jr was a brother or some other close relative to th e widow Elizabeth. His mother was probably Elizabeth Jenkins. Where does Jeremiah's birthdate of 1811 come from? In his will written in 1811, Cader names J eremiah and William as executors. You had to be "of age" to be the executor of an estate so J eremiah was born well before 1811. I believe that Jeremiah, as the first son mentioned in Cader's will and an executor, was hi s oldest son. I believe that this is the Jeremiah Mitchell who is found in Humphreys Co, TN i n the 1820 census. He is +45 in that census making his birth sometime before 1775. As for Elizabeth... and all of Cader's heirs... I believe that they all were of age by the ti me that his will was written. They are each given bequests in their own names and do not hav e things held in trust for them. Cader's land and family were in Bertie Co, NC. Why would h e have fathered a child in SC in 1805? He has a daughter Elizabeth who is an adult by 1811. I t doesn't make sense." Barbara's reply: "Marcia, I made the same determination that you have quite some time ago. What led me to Cade r Mitchell was that my ggrandfather was named Cader Madison/Mattison G. Ray and was the son o f Elizabeth Mitchell Ray Rogers. So I had tried for a long time to tie into the Cader Mitchel l family. Through the help of some generous Mitchell family researchers, I learned that my El izabeth Mitchell was the daughter of David Mitchell of S. C./Ala. Since my path has taken a d ifferent turn, I have stopped searching the Cader Mitchell family. The determination that Cad er Mitchell was married to Elizabeth Jenkins comes from a legal document(Indenture) between J ohn Jenkins and the other children of James Jenkins of Bertie County in 1797. The heirs liste d were: Cader Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth; Abner Williford and his wife, Martha; Mary Pow ell; Isaac Jenkins and Nathan Jenkins.
