Rootsweb link: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mkl1949&id=I074229 . Daughter of Thomas and Mary Burrough Merwin. She married her first husband Robert Tinker on January 26, 1600 in Amersham, Bucks, England. It is felt that Mary came to this country with her son John after her second husband Humphre y Collins died in 1634.Possibly she sailed on the same ship as John Hawthorne and William Kni ght both of Berkshire. First she probably lived in Dorchester,Massachusetts near two daughter s. Around 1640 she, John, and her married daughters moved to the new town of Windsor, Hartfor d County, Connecticut. Here they were among the first to be granted land.

Note #2 -Sources by Robin Bush: 35. "supposed son of Simon Hoyte," West Hatch parish church records.Walter clearly was Simo n and Jane's first child after their marriage about a year earlier. . Genealogy: Source: HHH Book of 1871, pg. 292-296 Walter was born in 1618 in England; in 1684 he gave his age as about 65when he witnessed th e will of John Hoyt of Rye, and in his will of 1696,he gave his age as about 78. Walter's name was usually spelled Haite or HAYTE, but his sons took the modern spelling of HO YT. A grant of land is recorded to Walter Hoyt at Windsor in 1640. The first book of Windsor lan d records, undated, describes a plot "three score and four acres more or Less" bounded east b y Nicholas Hoyt, west and north by the commons, and south by the Rivulett. Also fifty acres m ore or less opposite John Tinkers farm, bounded north and east by the land of Nicholas Hoyt , southeast by the land of William Thrall, and south by the Rivulett. Also ten acres of lan d bounded west by Nicholas Hoyt, north by Richard Willer and south by William Thrall. Rowland's and Grant's records of old Windsor show that Walter Hoyt or Hayt had three childre n born there. On 28 February 1640/41 the Windsor land inventory shows "Symon Hoyte" had granted from the pl antation for meadow and upland "four-score acres,"also "on the northside of the rivulet fou r score acres, thirty [of?] which is given his son Walter Hoyte from the town." In the record s of Windsor is "old goody Hoyt," who died 1643. Savage presumed she was either mother of Wal ter or of Simon. Walter removed to Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT with the first settlers about 1653. His fou r acres were bounded south by George Abbott's homelot. On 18 December 1653 the townsmen of No rwalk agreed with "RalphKeeler and Waltar Haite" about building a house for Mr. Hanford, them inister. Nicholas and Walter Hoyt of Windsor sold 20 acres of land inthat town to William Han num of Windsor. In 1655 the record shows "Waltar Haite is to erect and sett up a good and sufficient gate lea ding into the meadows of the other side," and was one of the three who were to drive the cow s to pasture at Norwalk. In the Norwalk patent of 1686 "Mr. Walter Hoyt" is fifth of the te n proprietors of Norwalk mentioned as having possessed the land for more than 20 yearslast pa st. On 29 March 1655 at a town meeting at Norwalk it was voted that "Waltar Haite and Ralph K eeiler are to worke the fence for the yeer eensuinge." Between 1658 and 1681 Walter repeatedly served as Deputy for Norwalk. Hewas a fence viewer th ere. In February 1671 he was rated at L192, and in January 1687 at L242; in each case there a re only eight persons rated ata higher sum. In 1665 and 1670 Walter Hoyt agreed to beat the d rum on alloccasions required, at 10 shillings. He was Sergeant of the Trainband on19 May 165 9 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT. He appeared on the censusof October 1669 in Norwalk, Fair field County, CT. In May 1672 Walter Hoyte was among those whose names were given to the General Court "for th e begining of a plantation neare the backside of Norwalke." His name is spelled "Walter Hoyt " on the list of lots drawn over Norwalk River, and on the list of inhabitants of Norwalk com mon agee states on 3 January 1687. He voted in the town meetings in Norwalk, and was confirme d by the General Court as one of the proprietors of Norwalk in 1685. Waltar Haite sold Thoma s Benedict 7 acres of upland adjoining his land, lying on Norwalk River, recorded on 3 Apri l 1678. In 1684 Walter Hoyt, age about 65, appeared at Fairfield to take oath as witness to the wil l of John Hoyt of Rye. In 1692 Walter Hoyt deeded to his son "Zerub." He died late 1698 or the first days of 1699 in Norwalk, Fairfield County,CT. The will of Walter Hoyt of Norwalk is dated 11 February 1696/1696 andproved 11 April 1699. Hoyt, pg. 295, Walter Hoyt Will dated: 11 Apr 1699 Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut HHH Book of 1871, by Davi d W. Hoyt, pg. 296 . BIOGRAPHY: Online Source: http://www.myheritage.com/FP/newsItem.php?s=23995812&newsID=6 By at least May 19th, 1659, Walter Hoyt is listed as sergeant in the Colony of Connecticut pu blic records and sent on a mission to Gold Hill with the intention of “surrendering” a parce l of land (“about 80 Acres, beginning at ye foot of ye hill where ye Wigwams stood” 336) fo r Mistick[4] and Paukatuck Native American Indians. Richard Olmstead as Lieutenant and Walte r Hoyte as Sergeant are the only two “confirmed by [the] Court” on this mission. The inhabit ants of Seabrook (an English trading fort, later spelled Saybrook) apparently petitioned fo r the sake of respecting the “Mohegan” and offering them a time period of three years to esta blish the plantation with supplies and oversight given to them by the colonists. They are gi ven full rights to the land, subject to Colonial Law, for as long as they continue to inhabi t the plantation. This entry provides an excellent example of the type of narrow and horrify ing expectations the Puritans had concerning Native American Indians. It may be interesting to note that Walter Hoyt, although a colonist, must have been enliste d by the power of the Connecticut Court as a militiaman at this time and was probably attache d to the Seabrook fort as a condition of earning a grant of land from the colony. As Connect icut was not yet a Crown Colony since it received a royal charter in 1662, this may or may no t designate him as a Redcoat. More than likely it does not, for the song "Yankee Doodle" wa s written after a rag-tag regiment of Connecticut Norwalkers arrived at Fort Crailo, NY durin g the French and Indian War and were ridiculed by British regulars for having chicken feather s for uniforms. On May 9th, 1667, Walter was given rights to a plantation: “Whereas Rich Olmstee d, Thomas Benedict, Thomas Betts, Walter Hoyte, John Rusco, Daniel Kellog, Nathan Hayes…hav e given in their names for the beginning of a plantation neare the backside of Norwalke…”(176 ). A plantation designates a large farm, usually involving a cash crop used for economic tra de. Once the plantation was established, the Hoyts were employed as farmers for several gene rations and attended a Congregational parish in New Canaan. Walter married Rhoda Tinker in 1652 and had at least one child, Zerubbabel Hoyt (1652-1739) , who was born in Norwalk, Fairfield Connecticut. Walter was buried at Windsor, Hartford, CT , between 1698 and 1699. Zerubbabel and his wife (unknown) had a daughter, Abigail, and three sons, Joseph Sr., Daniel , and Caleb. These births were also listed in Norwalk, Fairfield, CT.

SOURCE: Note: This new linage added to Simon Hoyt/e (*v), was from Robin Bush, an English res earcher, completed in 1995 and published in 1996. I have found an article of the research b y Doug Sinclair at:http://dougsinclairsarchives.com/hoyt/shoyt.htm John E. Hoyt * various surname derivations . Note #1 -Bush further cites account rolls for West Hatch that mention Simon Hoyt's payments t o the manor for new grants of tenements through1631, and by 1632-3 his name was crossed out a nd replaced by another. He acquired two tenements in 1627-8, not long before Simon the immigr ant left England. If the latter is the same as West Hatch Simon he would have signed away th e properties when he was in either Charlestown or Dorchester, MA. He had become a freeman i n 1631, so he may have felt sufficiently established in the Massachusetts Colony to undo hi s realestate ties in England. Bush notes that the above court entries are all under the subheading of the manor tithing o f West Hatch. This makes a fairly certain connecton between the Simons - the son of Michael o f West Hatch, the father of Walter and Nicholas of West Hatch and the immigrant to Massachuse tts Bay. . Note #2 -In New England Simon Hoyt appears on a list, with Stowers and the Sprague family, ofthose who were the firs t to live in Charlestown in the Massachusetts BayColony.(15) The date given for the list, whi ch appears in the townrecords, is 1628, but scholars can safely say that the document was mad esomewhat later. Although a few families were living in the vicinity ofwhat became Charlestow n by 1628, the so-called Higginson Fleet of shipswhich sailed in the Spring and Summer of 162 9, sent by the MassachusettsBay Colony, carried some if not most of the people named on tha t list.Gov. Endicott of the Massachusetts Bay Colony approved the removal of the Spragues an d "three or four others" to explore and settle what became Charlestown. Given the probable pr oximity of their origins in England,Simon may not only have sailed with them but joined the a s one of those others to Charlestown. On the above-mentioned list, Simon is listed one name a way from the Spragues. Simon appears on the first list of "Names of such as tooke the Oath of Freemen" of the colony , dated 18 May 1631,(16) and is presumed to have been in Dorchester. The first record found o f Simon in that town is from1633, leaving in question where he was in 1631. On 3 April 1633 D orchester town records state that a double-rail fence with mortices in the posts was ordere d to be put up by the cow-owners of the town, 20 feet of length per cow. Simon's fencing wa s to be 40 feet.(17) On 8 October of the same year he was appointed a fenceviewer for the "ea st field."(18) Onthe 6th of January of the following year he was included in a division of"ma rsh and swamp."(19) He was elected a fenceviewer for the "north field"on 24 May 1634.(20) O n the 2nd of June he was in another division of marsh and swamp, a parcel of about 8 acres o n the north side of the"neck." On 10 February he was ordered to keep one bull with the heifer s on the "neck of land," for which he was to be paid.(21) This action surely was taken to mak e calves and that Simon was to oversee the process. The last mention of Simon as a Dorcheste r resident was on 17 February 1635 (Old or New Style date?), when it was ordered that "the lo tt of medow that was Symon Hoytes next to boston side Joyning to John Witchfield shall be dev ided betwixt Mr. Rodger Williams and Gyles Gibbes."(22) a Simon and his family moved to Scituate, MA, by the time he and his wife joined the church t here on 17 April 1635.(23) Given the last two references to Simon in the Dorchester town reco rds, the move can be placed between the 10th of February and the 17th of April. Rev. Lothro p of Scituate listed the house lots and their occupants from the time he arrived in November ? of 1634 to December? of 1636, the months being unclear.(24) Simon had a house lot there bet ween those dates. Dean'shistory of Scituate indicates that "Goodman Hoyt" was granted land i n the"Greenfield" section of Scituate between April? and June? of 1635, although it is not cl early stated and there are no sources cited in this work.(25) However, given all this evidenc e, it is reasonable to say that the Hoyts moved to Scituate in late Winter of 1635 and had es tablished themselves sufficiently enough to join the church and build or buy ahouse there wit hin the next 4 months. The time of Simon's removal to Windsor, CT, is not known, but speculated to have been betwee n 1636 and 1639, when groups of settlers from Massachusetts Bay went there. He apparently doe s not appear in Scituate town and church records after 1635-1636. In 1677, Matthew Grant reco rded that there were 2 children born to Simon in Windsor (how accurate was this over 30 year s after the fact?), suggesting that he moved there with the 1639 party headed by Rev. Huit.(2 6) He was surely there by 7 May1640, when the Particular Court of Connecticut ordered that "S imon Hoyette and his family are to be freed from watch & ward until there be further Order ta ken by the Courte."(27) The reason for this may be found in where Simon was granted land in W indsor. He appears in an inventory of land ownership dated 28 February 1640-1.(28) He had bee n granted "fourscore" acres of upland and meadow and the same amount on the northside of th e "rivulet," with 30 acres of the latter designated for his son Walter. A copy of this recor d describes the property as being on the eastside of the "rivulet" (presumably what is now th e Farmington River), but given the meandering of the river, it can be considered as both. Thi s area became known as Hoyt's Meadow and was enough distant from the main settlement known a s the Palisado to excuse Simon and Walter from gaurd duty. A record of January 1659-60 says h e had a "long seat" in the Windsor church, for which he paid 6 shillings.(29) He had died i n Stamford, CT, by this time. The record refers to pews associated with houses and their orig inal owners, although the latter are not named, and Simon was likely among them. Simon supposedly sold his homestead lot in "Hoyt's Meadow" in1646 (to the Thrall's*).(30) H e owned a house lot and 2 1/2 acres bordering the common in Fairfield, CT; 5 acres at "Sasco e Neck" on "Hoit's Island," and land purchased from John Green.(31) This land is listed in a n inventory for the town of Fairfield dated 6 March 1649. He may have bought some of it nea r the time he sold his Windsor land in 1646 and made his move in that year. Simon's death is recorded in the Stamford town records on the 1st day of the 7th month 1657 ( Old Style dating), translating to 1 September1657.(32) An inventory of his estate was taken o n 9 October of 1657. This Fairfield Co. probate item is given here as it was transcribed fo r David Hoyt's book. It is described as worn and partially torn. The end of it is clearly mis sing. . BIOGRAPHY: Historical and Genealogical Record, Dutchess and PutnamCounties, New York, 1912 - Part 2, pg 452-454 (Some of this Biograhy is inacurrate - johnehoyt , 2013. ) THE HAIGHT FAMILY both numerically and by virtue of their ability and energy have for many years occupied a prominent place in the annals of the central Hudson River Valley. The family descend from Baron Johannes Von Haight (***Wrong*** not of European dna) who went from Normandy to Britain in the thirteenth century, and the American branch trace their ancestry to that sterling Puritan, Simon Haight who was born in (Simon Hoyte never spelled or wrot e his name as Haight, a couple of his sons did, though) Dorsetshire, England, in 1596, and sailed for America October 6, 1638 on the vessel "Abigail," with Col. John (We now know it was the Lyons Whelps ) Endicott who was afterward appointed Governor of the Massachusetts colony. In colonial records the name is spelled variously Haight, Hait, Hoyt and Hoit. Simon Haight brought with him to America his wife and son, John, and two other children who probably died in infancy as no further record of them can be found. The family settled &st at Salem, Mass., and a few years later removed to Stamford, Conn., where Simon Haight died Sept, 1, 1657. Several of his descendants live in this section of Connecticut and for many generations have spelled the name " Hoyt ." The online Stone Family http://www.stonefamilyassociation.org/index.php?pr=Simon_Of_Watertown_MA SIMON STONE: Of WATERTOWN SIMON & GREGORY STONE'S CHURCH IN ESSEX, ENGLAND . St. George's Church in Great Bromley, Essex was the church where Gregory and Simon and many o ther Stones were baptized and married and buried. There are some wonderful pictures of it pos ted here . The spectacular double hammerbeam roof-ceiling is in need of repair, and this lin k includes information on making tax-deductible contributions (for both US and UK residents ) for this worthwhile project. . Hammerbeam construction connotes the horizontal projection of the roof beam from the wall, br aced by a strut that rests on wall posts. A vertical post from the end of the beam projects u pward, meeting the rafters; another curves over the open space and comes down on the hammer b eam on the opposite side. A double hammerbeam system adds a second row of horizontal beams wi th their upper and lower braces. The purpose of this is to transfer the thrust to the walls , but the visual result alone would make it worthwhile, even if it were only decorative, no t structural. Take a look at the photos and all will become clear

(July 2002) . THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF SIMON AND GREGORY STONE. . William E. Stone, Cambridge, Mass, 1897 A copy of the will of Simon Stone is published in the N. E. Genealogical Register , Vol. III, p. 182, and the Middlesex Probate Records state that the will was "exhibited o n oath as the last will of the said Simon Stone by his brother Gregory Stone and Steeven Day ." Here we have positive proof of the relationship between Simon and Gregory. Gregory Stone came to New England about the same time as Simon,--the exact date ha s not been discovered. His name is on the list of townsmen of Watertown, Feb. 28, 1636-7, bu t he finally settled at Cambridge, Mass. He and Simon appeared together and took the freeman' s oath, May 25, 1636. He lived in Cambridge only a little more than a mile distant from his brother Simon , whose estate in Watertown was just on the boundary line between Watertown and Cambridge. Re v. Jonathan Mitchell's list of the original members of the church of Cambridge gives Gregor y Stone's family as follows: "Gregory Stone, Deacon of this church, and Lydia, his wife. Children: John, Daniel, David , Elizabeth, Samuel and Sarah. Also John Cooper, son of the aforesaid Lydia, and Lydia Fiske , her daughter." Lydia was the widow of Cooper when Gregory Stone married her. Gregory Ston e died at Cambridge, Nov. 30, 1672, aged 80 years. Mr. Somerby found, on examining the Parish Register of Nayland, Suffolk Co., Englan d, that Gregory Stone had been a resident of that place before coming to New England. Naylan d, Suffolk Co., on the river Stour, is only three miles distant from Boxted, in Essex, wher e Simon Stone in 1630 was taxed for land. . Extracts from the Parish Register of Nayland, taken in 1892: 1617--Julie--the 20 daie were mar Gregory Stonne and Margaret Garrad. 1618--July--The last daie was bapt. John, sonne of Gregory Stonne. 1620--August--The 15 day was bap. Daniel ye sonne of Gregory Stone. 1622--Septem: 22 was bapt. David ye sonne of Gregorie Stone. 1624--October. 3 was bap. Elizabeth, the daughter of Gregory Stone. 1626--Aug: 4 was buryed Margrett, the wife of Gregory Stone. 1626--Aug: 6 was buryed Elizabeth the daughter of Gregory Stone. 1628--March 6, was bap. Elizabethe the dau. of Gregorie Stone. 1630--February 4, daie was bapt. Samuell sonne of Gregory Stone. 1632--Feby. 8, was bapt. Sarah daughter of Gregory Stonne. . From researches by William E. Stone of Cambridge, Mass., in 1897, and more recent o nes by members of the Stone Association in 1907, the following facts: There can be no doubt that Gregory Stone of Nayland, Suffolk County, England, and G regory Stone of Cambridge, Mass., are the same. The Nayland Register shows that Gregory Ston e was married twice; that his first wife, Margaret Garrad, was the mother of his first thre e children, John, Daniel and David; and the mother of the other three, Elizabeth, Samuel an d Sarah, was his second wife, whom we know to have been the widow Lydia Cooper. Simon and Gregory Stone have both been located in England, not long before they cam e to this country, Simon at Boxted in Essex, and Gregory at Nayland in Suffolk; but both, i t is evident, were born elsewhere and Emma M. Walford, the well-known genealogist of London , found the records of their baptisms on the Parish Registers of Much Bromley. Much Bromley , now called Great Bromley, Essex County, England, is only about nine or ten miles from Boxt ed and Nayland. . From Registers of Baptisms, 1559-1660 1585-6. 9 Feb. Simond, son of Davie Stone & Ursly 1592. 19 Ap. Gregorie Stone, son of David Stone. Marriages, 1559-1660 1616. 5 Aug. Symond Stone & Joan Clarke were married. . Here we have the baptism of Simon Stone, Feb. 9, 1585-6. We know that his wife's maiden nam e was Joan Clarke, and we have here the marriage of Simon Stone and Joan Clarke, Aug. 5, 161 6. As to Gregory, his baptism, April 19, 1592, agrees with his age as given by Savage, who sa ys he was eighty years old when he died in 1672. From later researches in 1907: Simon Stone of Watertown and Gregory Stone of Cambri dge, the original emigrants, were born in Much Bromley, now Great Bromley, Essex County, Engl and, and their ancestry has been traced beyond reasonable doubt to Symond Stone of Much Broml ey, who died in 1510. Symond Stone of Much Bromley owned a property called "Walles," situate d in Ardleigh, which he bequeathed to his second son, Walter Stone. Ardleigh and Much Bromle y are adjoining parishes and their churches are only three miles apart. There can be no doub t that the Stones mentioned in the Court Rolls of Ardleigh are of the same family from whic h Simon and Gregory Stone, the emigrants, descended. The will of Symond Stone of Much Bromle y, dated May 12, 1506, probated Feb. 10, 1510, names four sons, David, Walter, Myhyll (i. e. , Miles), and William. . The line of descent is supposed to be: Symond Stone of Much Bromley. David Stone of Much Bromley. Symond Stone of Much Bromley. David Stone of Much Bromley. Simon and Gregory Stone, the emigrants. As Walter Stone inherited an estate in Ardleigh, his sons, if he had any, would natural ly be residents of Ardleigh, rather than of Great Bromley. Of Myhyll, the third son, not th e slightest mention has been found, either in the Essex Wills or in the Parish Registers, an d it is quite probable that he died unmarried. William Stone, the youngest son, had only one son, named William. It seems; therefore, fair t o assume that Symond Stone3 of Much Bromley, who is known to be the father of David Stone4 , who was the father of Simon Stone5 and Gregory Stone5, the emigrants, was the son of Symon d Stone's1 eldest son, David Stone2.
