i just looked up Emily J Stearns in my Stearns 1901 genealogy book. Shemarried Dr. FF Hoyt o f New Orleans in 1856. She is from the Sixthgeneration of Nathanial Stearns, the brother of C harles Stearns. MyStearns family comes from Charles, yours comes from Nathanial. BothNathania l and Charles are the sons of Isaac Stearns who came from Englandin the 1600s. Emily Josephin e had 5 other sibs. Emily had 2 daughters: Elizabeth Hall Hoyt b 1/11/1859 in Red Wing, MNand Carrie Stearns Hoy t (b 12/30/1861) in Red Wing, MN. Elizabeth marriedHenry C. Shepard of Nashua, NH in 1878 .. . Carrie married George M Gibsonin New Orleans in 1887. Carrie had 3 children. Emily's the daughter of Charles T. Stearns (b 1807) and he is the son ofDaniel and Elizabet h Hall Stearns of Stearnsville, Pittsfield, MA.Charles was a machinist and moved to the Terri tory of Michigan in 1835and in 1836 moved his family to Iowa which was then a part of theWisc onsin Territory. Eventually he bought property and moved to PeoriaILL and became the 2nd mayo r of that city . He eventually moved toSt.Cloud, MN and built a hotel there and moved to Ne w Orleans n 1864,built a hardware business in Mobile Alabama. Charles had 6 children, amongthe m Emily Josephine Stearns. (Source: Genealogy and Memoirs of Nathanial and Charles Stearns and theirDescendents by Avi s Stearns Van Wagenen, Syracuse,NY: Courier PrintingCompany,1901) I'll make copies of these pages from the books to send you if you'reinterested. love P 4. I got it thru ILL @ brighhamYoung University library. as you may have found, some Stearns married Hoyts in teh family line:Emily Josephine Stearn s b 1839, St. Louis, MO married Dr. FF Hoyt of newOrleans - 2daughters: Elizabeth hall Hoy t b 1859 @ Red Wing, MN andCarrie Stearns Hoyt b 1861 in Red Wing Mn, married George M. Gibs on inNew Orleans 1887. Maybe they're relatives? Meanwhile, can you run a check on a long lost great aunt? She was aKabakoff - Ethel Kabakof f Korbel. She married Harry Korbel. As of 1930,they were listed on the census of Shelby Cty T N living there. But therewas a family falling out and she moved away with her "harrykins" . I haveletters from her in San Antonia c 1928, threatening to change her name sothe family c ould no longer find her. And indeed despite my looking forthe names (we may have tried this o nce before?), can't locate,. A search in SS Death Index finds Harry Korbel's (born in Milwaukee --they were students @ th e Un of Wisconsin in the 1920s where they likelymet) death location in California? Their wed ding announcemnt again inthe 20s lists their address as in Chicago, Illinois. but after thefa lling out in the early 1930s, can't seem to locate her. Wondered if youmight be able to try a nother search this time trying to find where HarryKorbel might have been living, perhaps the y moved to California --perhaps she did indeed change her name ... but i think the trail migh t bebetter following him than her.. oh, well worth a try

A society woman in Ala bama,Lillian Cheely was divorced and her wealthy husband refused to pay herthe alimony grante d the court -- he fled to the Bahamas and left herdestitite as well. Elizabeth eloped with Joe kabakoff -- a rare thing to do and even doublyrare given their clas s differences: she a child of privilege, educated insouthern private schools and 'came out' a s a deb at age 18. Joe Kabakoffand she eloped in Marion Arkansas one night according to the l etters ihave -- they just appeared married one night at a friends' house. Iheard a story from my aging great-aunt, Lillian, the eldest Kabakoff daughter, whom I met her in 1976 when i travelled to Texas on myhoneymoon, that they found t he little girl with cigarette burns on herbody and took her to the kabakoffs. Remember, though, that the Kabakoffs claim that Joe lived with them tothe 1930 census taker e ven he is living with the Larkins. They also listEthel and harry Korbel living there as well : even tho i have lettersfrom Ethel postmarked in 1928, in San Antonio TX , threatening to c hangeher name and divorce her husband is they continued to 'hound her' inTexas. So who knows? the Kabakoffs were a noisy, nosy and messy bunch fromall the letters i've read over the decad es. According to Lillian, the Kabakoffs found my mom in foster care and theytook her home with th em to live. elizabeth committed suicide in 1932. i just happened upon the Larkin census lising by accident. i don't thinkmy mom knew about La

and her dad married Evelyn when she was 14 -- my mom and she didn't getalong. Evelyn, not ve

From what i've read, LJ Cheely had 10 kids, but they were half his withMary G Morrison and h alf with his 2nd wife. It's been interesting to note from my reading of the Stearns genealogyfrom the 1600s on tha t people died with some regularity early in life:women in chidlbirth, or via 'consumptive' i llnesses after having beenworked to death and having too many kids, men by illness or acciden tsfrom hard work in the field, or in the case of the Cheely lumber men, byfelling trees or dr owning, and two Cheelys died by being smashed to deathin railway accidents. Children died ear ly on due to disease. So the men went on farming, got themselves more wives to handle thehouse chores and continue d to have children. the Stearns genealogy bookis filled with families of anywhere from 5 to 1 2 or 13 children
Whenwomen became widows, they either remarried and had more kids or grew t oan old age being cared for by their older children. p Biography: History of the Amos family, Email Source, From: patricia watkins To: Bob Watkins, John Hoyt Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2009 8:03 PM Subje ct: Ironton, Ohio Slideshow hey Bob & John - Check out this slideshow of pics from a trip niece Sarah and I made to Iront on, Ohio in late June. We did some ancestry research on maternal side, the Amos family. Matti e Jane Amos Stearns married George Gill Stearns (of Vermont) & they had Lillian Elizabeth Ste arns before she passed away at the young age of 26 ion 1884. George passed away a few years l ater @ age 32 in Reading, Vermont, his home town. Lillian is our great-grandmother & Elizabet h was her daughter, our mom's mother. The Amos family originally came from Virginia and indee d Ironton, Ohio as far south as you can get, is just over the Ohio River from Ashville, KY an d Huntington, W. Virginia. The ancestors originally came from England in the 1600s. William C ovington (W C) Amos was a celebrated 'ironmaster' in the Hanging Rock region and built a hous e in Ironton in 1888.. He and the other pioneers of the day built or leased iron furnaces, ma king 'pig iron' -- melting iron ore & charcoal which was abundant in the region, eventually s hipping it north' in the early 1900s to Henry Ford's auto factories. They melted the ore in g iant furnaces. Sarah & I walked in our grt3 grandfather's steps, visiting Vesuvius Furnace a t the nearby Vesuvius Lake State park, which has the best-preserved remains of any of the ol d furnaces from the turn of the century. So Bob, both our maternal ancestors and our Dad wer e involved in the steel business
Funny how those family patterns work out thru the ages. enj
oy the pics of the old ancestral house: it's still in fine condition and either of you want t
o loan me & Sarah $25,000, we would like to buy it ($300k) and turn it into the Amos Vesuviu
s Bed & Breakfast.
Thanks for that 1910 Census in Cincinnati Ohio. It's VERY interestingbecause it answers th
e question : How did JM Cheely meet mygrt-grandmother Lillian E. Stearns
This census shows L
ewis Munsey (LM)Cheely, my grt-grandfather JM Cheely's twin brother, boarding with theDelane
y family
The Delaney Family, showing William Delaney, as head of the family, isin the 'lumber busines
s' and Lewis is working with or for him also in thelumber biz. The WE Delaney family was pro
minant in Cincinnatti andWilliam's wife, Lillie G. Delaney, IS MY GRANDMOTHER LILLIAN'S AUNT
.Lillie G and her older sister, Mattie are from the Amos family ofIronton, Ohio, not far fro
m Cincinnati.
Mattie Amos married George Gill Stearns and their daughter was/is mygrt-grandmother, Lillia
n Stearns
At some point after Lillian's motherdied (Mattie Amos Stearns died @ age 27 in Ir
onton, OH), she went tolive with older sister Lillie J. Delaney in Cincinnati (I think thatLi
llian was named after her aunt Lillie Grace). I have a picture ofLillie G. Delaney from my gr
t-grandmother's photo collection.
JM Cheely must have been working in the area and went or visiting hisbrother @ the Delaney ho
me, where he apparently met his future wife,Lillian ... and the rest is my family HISTORY
Funny how it all fitstogether
Now if we can only find Ethel Kabakoff Korbel and Harry Korbel in the1940 census or later -
- when will that 1940 census be released?
