The spelling of the name "Gerould" varies greatly, Some of the spellingvariations include, J erauld, Gerauld, Jirauld, Gerer, Gera. The Jerauld, Gerould family were Huguenots exiled from France in 1685.It is thought that J ames was about 20 years of age when he left France.The family probably went to England fo r a while, Tradition states he wasone of 21 children. He first came to Boston with two of h is sisters,then onto Medfield, MA about 1718 with his wife and at least 2 children. By profession, he was a physician. There is an old legend that recordsthat on the voyage co ming to America he fell in love with Martha Dupuis,or Dupee. She too was a Huguenot. He acte d as her Coucher. thay had achild together. When she came of age, about 16 years, they marrie d. Hewas probably about 38 years old then. From their headstones in the VineLake Cemetary, w e can see she was only about 2 years younger then him.there are records of Martha being bor n in Boston, MA too. So much forlegends. The Headstones record: IN MEMORY OF DOC IN MEMORY OF JAMES GEROULD WHO MRS. MARTHA DIED OCTOBER YE 25TH GEROULD YE WIFE 1760 OF DOC JAMES IN YE 74 YEAR OF HIS GEROULD DIED AGE MARCH YE 25 1763 IN YE 75TH YEAR OF HER AGE Genealogy: obtained from the book; "The genealogy of the family of Gamaliel Gerould, son of Dr. Jacques (or ...By Samuel Lankto n Gerould" At the Medfield Historical Society, records there state he came toMedfield, MA about 1718 . In 1721, James and his wife bought the JosephAdams property on Dedham Rd. Dr. James contin uously bought up property.When he died he gave the properties to his wife Martha and his chil dren.He made provisions for his Negro slaves. The slave, Cesar, was not to besold out of th e family. Cesar went to live with Gamliel and died in 1789in Wrentham, MA. The original house built for Dr. James Jerauld was torn down and replaced sometime in the 1 8th century. That house was destroyed by firein 1985. The Boston book of Marriages 1700-1751, Volume 1, page 32, recordsthat they were married D ec. 26, 1709, that is, if he is the James Jerrard that married Martha Dupee. The Jerrard, Jarauld, Gerould Family History and Ancestry is credited to Carol Brotzman, f rom PA. Her email address at time of writing this inMarch 2002, is: brotzman@dfnow.com. Notes:

Jabez gerould served in the American Revolutionary War. First, as anenlisted man at Bunker Hi ll, where he was wounded, and second, as aCaptain, in Ordinance Control. He later worked in N ewton, CT, as ablack-smith. He removed to Franklin, NY with his family in 1798. In 1901,he mo ved his family to East Smithfield, PA, where he resided til hisdeath, on June 12, 1802. The journey from Franklin Forks, NY, to Queens Esters Flats, nearAthens, was made on a sla b raft. Jabez, and probably, the older boys,went on by foot to east Smithfield, PA, where the y picked out land. Theybuilt a log house the next year in 1801. The trials in the wildernes s wasvery short for Jabez Gerould. He died the next year after being taken illvery suddenly . His oldest son was but 16 years old. There were 8 childrenfor Demaris to raise alone in th e outback. The family resided in the loghouse until 1812, when they moved into a frame dwelli ng. Demarissupported the family by providing meals for travelers and spinning flax. The Jabez family was quite religious, with public prayer meetingsbeing held in their home . The reverand David Brainard, a prominentMissionary, held services in the Gerould home. All the children remained in the East Smithfield, PA area, exceptEphraim, whom moved to Co vington, Tioga Co., PA and Theodore, who went toHornbrook, Bradford, Co., PA. After the Third Gerould Reunion, September 15, 1884, the familyadjourned to go to the ceme tary to admire the newly purchased monument tothe worthy couple. Dr. Gerould rendered a bri ef address on the Jabezfamily. The Jabez Gerould to Rice Family Journal: "The Pedigree of the Family of Rice In a time of trouble in France a time which tried mens souls manywas slain that adheared to the religion of Christ all Christians feared toopenly acknowledge hi m lest they should be compeled to pay the penalty with their lives. Physician bythe name of Gerould hearing of religious freedom enjoyed in America sold his possesions inFrance and embarked for America with his Family consisting of three sons and one daughter uponariving here they settl ed near Boston in Massachusetts. The sons was all Physicians, the eldestestablished himself in W rentham Mafs where he raised a large family. Theeldest son Jabez Gerould enlisted in the revi lution fought under GeorgeWashington was in the battle of Bunker hill June 1775 and was there wounded in his right arm by the wind of a cannonball he retired with $800of continental mone y thinking with this to purchase himself a home butbefore he gained his health the money dye d on his hands being thenreduced to extremiities he was compelled to resort to his trade whic h was(blacksmithing) for a livelihood and hearing that there was a shop andtools unocupied i n Newtown Connecticut he went there and there married aworthy woman (Demaris Bennet) and havi ng seven sons and one daughterremoved in AD 1801 to Smithfiield in Bradford Co. Penna where h e died inJune 12th 1802. About the time that the Gerould family arived in America threebrothers by the name of Ri ce came from Wales to America one of themsettled in yorkstate another in Vermont the other i n Rhode Island the onelast mentioned arose to distinction in R.I and was known by the apeltio nof Major Rice his son settled in Warwick near Providence and here theyfound the second son o f the French DeGerould the (son) of Major RiceCaleb Rice marryed De Gerould eldest daughter a nd had nine children sixGirls and three Boys the eldest son in his travels came to Smithfiel d Paand becoming acquainted with his rellatives Jabez Geroulds family maryedthe only daughte r and had ten children six sons and four Daughters all ofwhome are living at this time Jan 27 , 1851 This account of the line of ancestors is written by the second son JabezGerould Rice accordin g to the reminescnce of his Mother Susan Rice."
