From "Genealogical Record of the Hodges Family of New England": RICHARD HODGES, HOGGE, HOGG, and possibly HODGE and HOAG, appears in on ly one entry (witnes s to a deed, July 7, 1645) under the guise of Hodge s. In all the others so far found, his na me is written Hogge or Hogg, a nd there is a possibility of its having been pronounced eithe r Hodge or H oag and spelled in one of these ways by the next generation. He was a t ailor an d lived in Boston from 1637 to about 1652. His residence before a nd after this period is unk nown. Perhaps the family moved to Connecticu t, becoming Hodge, or possibly to Newbury, Mass. , assuming the name of H oag; or perhaps Richard was a member of the First Church in Boston , whe re four of his children were baptized, in each case being called the ch ild of "our bro ther Richard Hogge." His wife's name was JOAN. On Jan'y 7 , 1639/40, he was granted a great l ot for 5 heads (20 acres) at the Mou nt, i.e. Mount Wollaston, now Braintree. He was made fre eman May 13, 16 40. He lived on the east side of Washington street, on the 3rd lot sout h o f Milk street, where he had a house and garden which he sold on 21 A ugust 1645 to John Lake . In the Book of Possessions, compiled about 165 2, Richard Hogg is the only person mentione d as owning land in Boston w hose name can be twisted into any resemblance of Hodges. . Children born in Boston:-- i. Joseph Hogge, b. 1637 Dec.--; bapt. 1639 Aug. 25. [There was a Joseph Hodg, adult inhabitant of West Springfield, Mass., April 7, 1707.] ii. Mary Hogge, b. 1641 July 16; bapt. 1641 July 22; d. soon. iii. John Hogge, b. 1643/4 March 4; bapt. 1643/4 March 10. It seems possible that he was the John Hoag [No. 17] of Newbury, Mass, who d. 1728, aged 85. ..... iv. Mary Hogge, b. 1646/7 Feb. 3; bapt. 1646/7 Feb. 7. . "The Memorial history of Boston including Suffolk County, Massachusetts , 1630-1880" (Boston : James R. Osgood and, 1881-1883, 2753 pgs.): . The list of members admitted to the First Church in Boston before 1640 i ncludes "Richard Hog ge, a Taylor, and Joan his wife", admitted on the 1 8th day of ye same 6th month (1639). Additional information about Paternal Line: The Bieris were Mennonites from Switzerland who l eft their homeland for the Palatinate of Germany and from there made their way to Rotterdam , where Nicholas and wife Barbara embarked on the ship "Friendship" to Philadelphia in 1727 . From Pennsylvania they moved to Virginia, and then our branch, founded by Nicholas Beery Jr . (b 1739) and Maria Keller, moved on to Ohio, settling in the Fairfield County, where they b elonged to the Church of the Brethren. Nicholas Jr and Maria/Mary's son John "Red John" Beer y (b 1765) and wife Margaret Shaver ended their days in Fairfield County. Their son Abraham W ashington Beery (b 1820) lived in Logan, Hocking County - he and his wife Elizabeth Mericle h ad 13 children. Their son Emanuel (b 1823) and his wife Belinda Harsh had 11 children, includ ing Eden (b 1857) who fathered Augustus E. Beery in 1877. Augustus left for Colorado around 1 900. Our branch is now in California.
